    From TOD:

On March 18th, 2014, President Barack Obama will award 24 Army veterans the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry.

These veterans will receive the Medal of Honor in recognition of their valor during major combat operations in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

Each of these Soldiers’ bravery was previously recognized by award of the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second highest military award; that award will be upgraded to the Medal of Honor in recognition of their gallantry, intrepidity and heroism above and beyond the call of duty.

In 2002, Congress, through the Defense Authorization Act, called for a review of Jewish American and Hispanic American veteran war records from WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, to ensure those deserving the Medal of Honor were not denied because of prejudice. During the review, records of several Soldiers of neither Jewish nor Hispanic descent were also found to display criteria worthy of the Medal of Honor. The 2002 Act was amended to allow these Soldiers to be honored with the upgrade – in addition to the Jewish and Hispanic American Soldiers.

North Dakota tries to woo workers for empty jobs
    March 17, 2014 6:12 PM ET
    By By JAMES MacPHERSON

North Dakota officials are sending a plea to people across the country: We need you.

The state’s unprecedented oil bonanza has made it the economic darling of the nation — boasting a sturdy economy, a state government budget surplus, and its highest population ever, as swarms of people have migrated to North Dakota. But it hasn’t been enough, officials say, citing some 25,000 more jobs than takers in all industries in the state.

Hoping to woo workers to fill those jobs, Lt. Gov. Drew Wrigley and the North Dakota Economic Development Foundation on Monday unveiled a “Find the Good Life in North Dakota” campaign at the state Capitol in Bismarck.

“These are exciting times in our state,” said Wrigley, who called the lack of an adequate workforce one of “the challenges of prosperity.”

The $800,000 campaign is being paid for equally by tax-supported state funds and a donation by Hess Corp., a New York based oil company. The campaign will rely on media advertising and a state website that is expected to be running in May. Specific details of the campaign have yet to be released.

Officials said in a statement that the campaign will focus on career opportunities in North Dakota and promoting the state as “a great place to live, work and raise a family.” It will target states with “chronic unemployment” and will attempt to lure skilled workers of various occupations, from engineering to nursing. The effort also will target military veterans, and those who will soon leave the armed services, officials said.

North Dakota has the lowest unemployment rate in the nation, at less than 3 percent. It is leading the nation in population growth and the number of residents in the state is at an all-time high, at more than 725,000 people, according to the Census Bureau.

The surge in economic activity and population growth has come largely from oil. The state has gone from the nation’s ninth-biggest oil producer in 2006 to the second, behind only Texas.

      About North Dakota,

Maddow did a segment this week about how companies are dumping nuclear waste all over North Dakota..on Indian Reservations, Foreclosed buildings, Abandoned places in the middle of nowhere. Just dumping the nuclear waste.

        • isonprize

          a WHOLE lot…

I’m curious about what ND is going to look like with all that nuclear waste being dumped all over the state. After while, they’re going to run out of foreclosed buildings and empty spaces to dump that mess. Something will get done when the ‘right’ 2520s start reporting health issues related to radiation poisoning I bet.

In the fall, I am scheduled to attend a same-sex wedding of a college friend. His fiance is from ND so I should be meeting the first North Dakotans I’ve met who actually stayed living in ND, assuming that his family attends. The guys visit the family home, which is “an hour from Fargo,” annually. Yeah, I don’t know.

    From TOD:

A Word from ’57 and Female’ (comment here)

I am going to be 64 years old in a few months and being self-employed for the last 33 years I have never had one of my medications covered by insurance. Never. Just to stay minimally healthy, my asthma, blood pressure meds and a few others are around $600/month.

We had awful insurance that never covered my asthma until there was no insurance at all for the last decade. I lived in constant fear.

I chose a Gold plan – for my last year and half until Medicare I wanted maximum flexibility and a low deductible: $500 and $3,500 out-of-pocket cap with a large network. I chose a co-op plan. These plans, with no profit incentive, were supposed to be a bridge to something akin to a public option. In the 2012 budget fight, the Republicans won the elimination of these plans from ACA but anyone who had a grant before then was grandfathered in. IL was able to establish an insurance plan/company that will run on overhead similar to Medicare and we all ‘own’ the company.

My premium, after some subsidy, is $558/month. Your age can still be a factor in premium cost, but with a cap. I do have co-pays on my medications – it will be about $140/month. But I’m still only out a little more for truly comprehensive health care than what I was paying retail for my meds before ACA.

To walk up to the CVS Pharmacy counter and give them my card was overwhelming. My $320 asthma med: $70 co-pay. My $160 nasal spray: $30. And so on.

I need to get my first mammogram. I need to go to the gynecologist for the first time in 10 years. When I was sick last week and even the meds from the doctor weren’t working, I knew if – God forbid – I needed the ER because I couldn’t breathe, I could go. I have insurance. I will not be denied, as I was in 1983 because ‘no one develops asthma as an adult’ sayeth BCBS and they wouldn’t pay for my hospital stay.

    I’m one grateful old lady.

NC regulators shielded Duke’s coal ash pollution

By MICHAEL BIESECKER and MITCH WEISS

    — Feb. 9, 2014 1:43 PM EST

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Over the last year, environmental groups have tried three times to use the federal Clean Water Act to force Duke Energy to clear out leaky coal ash dumps like the one that ruptured last week, spewing enough toxic sludge into a North Carolina river to fill 73 Olympic-sized pools.

Each time, they say, their efforts have been stymied — by the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

The state agency has blocked the citizen lawsuits by intervening at the last minute to assert its own authority under the federal act to take enforcement action. After negotiating with Duke, the state proposed settlements where the nation’s largest electricity provider pays modest fines but is under no requirement to actually clean up its coal ash ponds.

Clean water advocates have long complained that state regulators are too cozy with the polluters they regulate. But they say that coordination and cooperation has become even more overt since the January 2013 inauguration of Gov. Pat McCrory, a pro-business Republican who worked at Duke Energy for 28 years.

LEO Weekly editor banned from Mitch McConnell presser

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell’s campaign on Monday barred Joe Sonka, the news editor for LEO Weekly magazine, from attending a press conference following a round-table discussion with veterans.

The campaign called on the Louisville Metro Police to make sure that Sonka, who has been critical of McConnell in the past, from entering the conference room at the Hilton Garden Inn, on Crittenden Drive, where the event was held.

McConnell, during the press conference, said he didn’t know why Sonka had been prohibited from attending.

Sonka said he was originally told that he couldn’t attend because there was limited space in the room. In fact, there were numerous empty chairs in the room.

Moments before the event, Jesse Benton, McConnell’s campaign manager, said that Sonka had been barred because other reporters had objected to Sonka asking questions. Benton refused to say who that reporter was.

    Texans Attack ‘Muslim Weather’

The term “Haboob” is the Arabic word for wind—try saying it a few times, it’s fun!—and American meteorologists have been using it since the 1950’s to describe a huge sandstorm. Most recently, however, the word inspired a mini-firestorm.

Shortly after KCBD News Channel 11 in Lubbock, Texas posted a photo on its Facebook page with the caption “Haboob headed toward Lubbock” Texans begun to freak out, taking to Facebook to make it clear they aren’t fond of Arabs or Muslims therefore don’t want to hear no, “meddle [sic] eastern term.”

The hullabaloo over “haboob” ranged from run of the mill xenophobic comments such as, “Its a freakin’ dust storm people!! Its not a Haboob!! This is America….be proud!!!” to the more angry, racist remarks like:

“Since when do we need to apply a Muslim vocabulary to a good ole AMERICAN dirt storm?? …I take great offense to such terminology! GO BACK TO CALLING THEM DIRT STORMS!!”

It seem Texans are very imaginative when disparaging “others” speaking in “code”. Is term ‘Canadian’ used as racist word?

Is Canadian’ the new black? Perhaps – that is if you’re a racist speaking in code.

Recent revelations that the term “Canadian” is being used to replace racist names for black people have got a Texas assistant district attorney into trouble and have left others wondering what exactly it means to be labelled a Canadian in the American south.

Morning Plum: What the Obamacare enrollment numbers mean
    By Paul Waldman
    March 18 at 8:57 am

The Obama administration announced late yesterday that 800,000 people have signed up for new health insurance so far in March. That brings the total under the Affordable Care Act to over 5 million and makes it likely that 6 million will have enrolled by March 31, the last day to sign up before getting a fine. That 6 million number would meet a projection made by the Congressional Budget Office. So what are we to make of those numbers?

To a degree, targets like these are arbitrary when we’re judging the law’s success. It isn’t as though we’ll say that if 5,999,999 people signed up by the end of the month then the law has failed, while if 6,000,001 sign up then it has succeeded. Nor does that number include the millions of people who have been enrolled in Medicaid, many of whom are getting health coverage for the first time. And the number of people signed up will continue to rise, particularly since the fines are quite small in the first year but get larger over time. But it’s worth remembering that for all the time we spend gaming out the political winners and losers of Obamacare, there are real people’s lives at stake.

If you were just watching political ads, you’d think that there were precisely zero Americans who had actually been helped by the ACA, since for some rather strange reason, the law’s advocates seem reluctant to actually tell the individual stories of those who have gotten covered for the first time, or can now get coverage despite a pre-existing condition. Meanwhile, the law’s opponents have spent millions of dollars blanketing the airwaves in states with upcoming elections, telling horror stories of people whose lives have allegedly been devastated by the ACA. And yes, nearly every one of those stories turns out to be utterly bogus when it is examined. But how many voters know that?

Low-Wage Workers Are Finding Poverty Harder to Escape
    By STEVEN GREENHOUSE

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — At 7 in the morning, they are already lined up — poultry plant workers, housekeepers, discount store clerks — to ask for help paying their heating bills or feeding their families.

And once Metropolitan Ministries opens at 8 a.m., these workers fill the charity’s 40 chairs, with a bawling infant adding to the commotion. From pockets and handbags they pull out utility bills or rent statements and hand them over to caseworkers, who often write checks — $80, $110, $150 — to patch over gaps in meeting this month’s expenses or filling the gas tank to get to work.

Just off her 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. shift, Erika McCurdy needed help last month with her electricity and heating bill, which jumped to $280 in January from the usual $120 — a result of one of the coldest winters in memory. A nurse’s aide at an assisted living facility, Ms. McCurdy said there were many weeks when she couldn’t make ends meet raising her 19-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter.

“There’s just no way, making $9 an hour as a single parent with two children, that I can live without assistance,” said Ms. McCurdy, 40, a strong-voiced, solidly built Chattanooga native.

Maryland legislature votes to approve expanding pre-k program to include 1600 more children…but this is the part of the story that got me:

Republican delegates asserted Monday that the benefits of pre-school education was unproven, while Democrats maintained that extensive research has shown that early education benefits children all the way through high school.

My parents don’t have the Innanets, so I was without access until last Friday, when I started lurking on my smartphone. I brought my tablet but forgot the connector cable that would allow me to access from my phone, so my sister gave me her portable access to use… thank the Lord! In any event, my comments will be limited for a bit, but a sista will remain lurking!

Be blessed and have a wonderful day!

Bill Kristol Really Hopes Someone Can Get Americans Riled Up For War Again

    TOM KLUDT – MARCH 18, 2014, 10:47 AM EDT

Bill Kristol doesn’t want to hear about how Americans are tired of war.

The forever-bellicose Kristol writes in the latest issue of The Weekly Standard that all this talk of the country’s “war-weariness” is nothing more than “an excuse to avoid maintaining our defenses or shouldering our responsibilities.”

Indeed, the consistently wrong pundit is right that most Americans these days don’t share his longing for war. And he correctly notes that the wars he’s spent the better part of the last decade advocating likely contributed to the nation’s fatigue.

A poll earlier this year found that even a majority of Republicans now view the Iraq War, a former Kristol-driven objective, as a failure. Nearly half of the country believes the war in Afghanistan was a mistake. And polls likewise show that few Americans back military action in Iran, a current Kristol-driven objective.

But Kristol thinks someone should be courageous enough to try and change those poll numbers.

“In fact, the idol of war-weariness can be challenged,” Kristol writes “A war-weary public can be awakened and rallied. Indeed, events are right now doing the awakening. All that’s needed is the rallying. And the turnaround can be fast.”

Obama Is Cracking Down on For-Profit Colleges—And Liberals Should Applaud Him for It
    BY DANNY VINIK @dannyvinik

The Department of Education released the final draft of its proposed rule on Friday to ensure that for-profit colleges offer post-graduation employment opportunities for their students that leave them capable of paying back their student loans. The rule, known as the “gainful employment” regulation, represents the culmination of a three-year fight with the industry, which successfully challenged a previous version of the rules in court.

The administration believes that the new regulation, which will first go through a 60-day public comment period, can now withstand a court challenge. And that’s a good thing once you understand what the changes will do and why they’re necessary.

Students at for-profit colleges drop out at an alarming rate and those that do graduate have much higher levels of debt than students in public and private non-profit colleges. For-profits also receive a substantial share of their revenue—more than 80 percent to be exact—from loans and grants from the federal government. In 2012, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, led by Senator Tom Harkin, completed a two-year report into for-profit universities to investigate whether this taxpayer money was being well spent. Across the board, degrees and certificates from for-profit colleges cost significantly more than those from non-profits:

Former Snowden/Greenwald sympathizer Tom Ricks gets fed up with their hypocritical posturing.

–Russia is far worse. There essentially aren’t any warrants or court orders needed for mass surveillance of its own citizens. The Russian surveillance apparatus dwarfs the United States’ NSA, and there aren’t any protections or oversight restricting its activity. Russia has a history of imprisoning and even killing journalists and activists alike. And, while we’re here, its record on LGBT rights is atrocious.

All of these issues are squarely in the Greenwald/Snowden wheelhouse — not unrelated, random issues, but specific to Greenwald’s beat and Snowden’s mission statement. This is what makes their silence particularly deafening.

The message we’re getting here is that surveillance and authoritarianism is bad — unless there’s something in it for you. Neither Snowden nor Greenwald are brave enough to admit they need Russia and Brazil to protect them, therefore they won’t, as they say, shit where they live.

The financial protection effects of health reform, evidence from Massachusetts

by The Incidental Economist on March 17, 2014 · 3 comments

the reform significantly improved credit scores, reduced the total amount past due, reduced the fraction of debt past due, and reduced the probability of personal bankruptcy. We find particularly pronounced reductions in the probability of having a large delinquency of over $5,000. These effects tend to be larger among individuals whose credit scores were low at the time of the reform, suggesting that the greatest gains in financial security occurred among those who were already struggling financially.

Arrests follow protests at state Capitol

By Janel Davis and Chris Joyner

    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

More than 20 people were arrested Tuesday in a string of protests targeting Gov. Nathan Deal’s decision not to expand Medicaid in Georgia under the Affordable Care Act.

Dr. Raphael Warnock of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was pastor, was among those placed in handcuffs by Georgia State Patrol troopers. Warnock and a group of supporters staged a sit-in outside of Deal’s office Tuesday afternoon. They were arrested without incident and led away as the remaining crowd of protesters sang “We Shall Not Be Moved.”

“It is no exaggeration to say that we are here on a matter of life and death,” Warnock told a group of about 100 supporters.

Warnock was the last of a series of speakers in the Capitol rotunda, including two Democratic state senators, criticizing Deal and Republican leaders on a range of issues from education to abortion rights to voting rights. But the governor’s position on Medicaid expansion was the centerpiece of Tuesday’s action by a coalition of liberal groups organized under the name Moral Monday.

Gov. Chris Christie’s campaign manager was kept informed of complaints over traffic backups stemming from the politically motivated scheme to close lanes on the George Washington Bridge, emails released Monday show.

One email reveals the Garden State governor’s top appointee at the bridge agency, Bill Baroni, looping in campaign manager Bill Stepien on a letter of complaint on the fourth full day of the September lane closures. “Thanks,” Stepien replied after being forwarded the letter from Mark Sokolich, the mayor of Fort Lee, where traffic backed up during the shenanigans.

Another Rich Guy Says Populists Are Like Nazis
    BY JONATHAN COHN @citizencohn

Remember the story about the rich guy comparing left-wing populism to Nazism? It’s happening again, only this time it’s a different rich guy.

It’s Ken Langone, co-founder of Home Depot and financier of the Republican Party.Politico’s Ben White and Maggie Haberman caught up with him, while reporting an article about how the very wealthy see the political landscape—and whether they are worried, as they were before, that liberal arguments about inequality and redistribution were resonating with the public.

“I hope it’s not working,” Ken Langone, the billionaire co-founder of Home Depot and major GOP donor, said of populist political appeals. “Because if you go back to 1933, with different words, this is what Hitler was saying in Germany. You don’t survive as a society if you encourage and thrive on envy or jealousy.”

civil rights, social benefits denied to EVERYONE BUT YOU.
Your ilk has tried every lowdown trick in the book to dismantle
it. Frankly, you’re one vote, and I can live my whole life never
      going to Home Depot again.

When all else fails in trying to fuel some bull about this President, the Wash Post resorts to… [drum roll, please] complaints about traffic: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dr-gridlock/wp/2014/03/18/obama-visit-likely-to-mess-up-afternoon-commute-in-d-c/?hpid=z3 Oh, the humanity! It’s South of here but the lone known R in the office chose to send it out. Stay gold, idiocy, stay gold!

    • Miranda

Don’t you know no other President in modern times ever ever caused traffic problems when outside of the White House. It never happened until Jan 20, 2009.

Truly. As someone whose working career spans more years than I care to ponder, I endured many an inconvenience and heat-seeking-stay-put paraphernalia. Daddy Bush seemed to only visit friends on Fridays at rush hour.

    – –The story of rural life in the hill country of North Mississippi is told in an astonishing collection of photographs taken in the early 1970s, which are now being honored with a 40-year retrospective to ensure that these images of a way of life that died out long ago may live on.

The photographs also tell the story of Michael Ford, who captured them after quitting his teaching job in Boston and packing his young family into a cherry-red Volkswagen microbus and making his home in Oxford, Mississippi.

InitiallyFord’s plan had been just to visit his in-laws in northern Mississippi, but he quickly became so smitten with the place that he decided to stay.
