  • Feds: DC mayor knew of illegal shadow campaign

WASHINGTON (AP) — District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray was aware of an off-the-books “shadow campaign” to support his 2010 bid and personally requested the funds from an influential district businessman, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Atkinson disclosed the details in court when reading a document that described the activities of Jeffrey Thompson, the multimillionaire former owner of a well-connected accounting firm who pleaded guilty Monday to two conspiracy charges.

…Atkinson said “Gray presented Mr. Thompson with a 1-page budget for $425,000. He asked Mr. Thompson to pay for a get-out-the-vote campaign. Mr. Thompson agreed.” Gray agreed to let Thompson fund his campaign while concealing the source of those funds, prosecutors said.

…According to a criminal information filed in the case, Thompson funded illicit campaign activity for Hillary Rodham Clinton, Gray and seven other candidates for local office in the district. All told, the
efforts, described previously by prosecutors as “shadow campaigns,” were valued at more than $2 million.

    • morphus

Many, many, moons ago (during Barry’s admin), I followed several investigative reports about the “shadow governing bodies” which actually controls D.C. day-to-day operations on so many levels and thought to myself “why would anyone want the Mayor’s job in D.C.”

    • goldenstar

So, this Jeffrey Thompson also sponsored the 2008 Clinton DC work. Either he got paid good or he was betting against the Presidential “upstart.”

Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis: President Barack Obama http://linkis.com/FunnyOrDie.com/m/4mu68#

Noah C. Rothman, the resident right wing columnist at Mediaite, is trying to pass off this interview as a serious interview, saying PBO was “grilled”.

That guy is such a right wing shill. Obama’s election has driven these people mad.

      • rikyrah

        absolutely crazy

      • creolechild

I don’t know about the interviewer’s political affiliations but Funny or Die is partly owned by Will Ferrell, who is not shy about his support of PBO and the Affordable Healthcare Act. In fact, Funny or Die has been promoting Affordable Healthcare for some time now using various celebrities. The host is always obnoxious no matter who he’s interviewing but PBO held his own while plugging the health care law that is the stuff of legends.

        • Alma98

I think jziglar is talking about the Mediate nut creolechild .

          • creolechild

Oh, Mediaite…you need a hazmat suit to venture over there. Thanks for the clarification Alma.

          • Alma98

Sorry I should have clarified. I was taking about that GOP shill Noah Rothman.

Dexter cancer patient who called health care
‘unaffordable’ will save more than $1K

    Marisa Schultz
    Detroit News Washington Bureau

A Dexter cancer patient featured in a conservative group’s TV ad campaign
    denouncing her new health care
coverage as “unaffordable” will save more than $1,000 this year.

Julie Boonstra, 49, starred last month in an emotional television ad sponsored by Americans for Prosperity that implied Democratic U.S. Rep. Gary Peters’ vote for the Affordable Care Act made her medication so “unaffordable” she could die. Peters of Bloomfield Township is running for an open U.S. Senate seat against Republican Terri Lynn Land.

    The Detroit News and
fact checkers last month cast doubt on the accuracy of the TV ad. On Monday, Boonstra acknowledged which health plan she chose, offering the first evidence of cost savings

When advised of the details of her Blues’ plan, Boonstra said the idea that it would be cheaper “can’t be true.”

“I personally do not believe that,” Boonstra said.

We have seen repeatedly how obsessed the Religious Right is with ideas of demons and Satan. Satan especially is a handy crutch for them: if you don’t like something, just say Satan is behind it. I well remember born-again Christians, whom I otherwise liked very much as people, telling me that Satan was behind my own religion. When I would tell them Satan was their problem, that Pagans did not believe in Satan, they would answer that by denying Satan I was doing his work.

I will return to this point about being a Heathen and dealing with the problem of aberrant Christianity. For now let me remark that this is coming from people who, like Michele Bachmann, while pretending to follow the anti-rich teachings of Jesus, are probably now thanking God for the ultra-rich people Koch brothers for funding their “moral” crusade against poor people and the other social misfits Jesus liked to pal around with and minister to.

Speaking of doing Satan’s work, what was that Michele Bachmann was saying at CPAC?

GOP’s New Plan: Pay Cuts For Doctors If Obamacare Isn’t Chopped

    Sahil Kapur – March 10, 2014, 6:00 AM EDT

House Republicans have a bold new strategy to attack Obamacare, which involves huge pay cuts for physicians unless Democrats agree to delay the law’s individual mandate to buy insurance.

GOP leaders intend to vote on legislation this week, aides say, to delay the individual mandate in order to fund a “doc fix” that avoids a 24 percent pay cut to physicians under Medicare — which will automatically take effect on April 1 unless Congress acts. Inaction would disrupt the health care system, in part by causing many doctors to stop accepting Medicare patients.

The strategy is unlikely to succeed and could backfire on Republicans. Delaying the individual mandate is a nonstarter for the Democratic-led Senate and White House. By demanding a largely partisan unraveling of Obamacare in exchange for must-pass bipartisan legislation, they risk being blamed by seniors and the health care industry if the doctor pay cuts go into effect. When Republicans insisted on such an approach for federal funding last fall, the government shut down and they took most of the blame.

“This bill represents a new low, even for House Republicans,” fumed Drew Hammill, a spokesman for House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who decried the plan as “irresponsible and dangerous” and promised it’d be a “legislative dead-end.”

But Republican leaders believe they have an ace up their sleeve. Many of them expect Obama to delay the individual mandate unilaterally before the first penalties come due (as he has delayed other provisions of the law). So they argue that this proposal puts Democrats in a tough position, particularly given the unpopularity of the federal requirement to buy insurance. A full “doc fix” could be funded by putting it off for several years, an aide said.

Cruz Still Thinks GOP Can Repeal Obamacare In 2015: ‘Every Single Word’ (VIDEO)
    Fb-square Share

    Caitlin MacNeal – March 9, 2014, 10:17 PM EDT

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Sunday insisted that Republicans still have a chance of repealing Obamacare in 2015.

“If there’s one things that unifies politicians of both parties, you know, their top priority is preserving their own hide,” Cruz said on ABC’s “This Week” when asked if the GOP could repeal the health care law while President Obama remains in office. “And if enough Congressional Democrats realize they either stand with ObamaCare and lose, or they listen to the American people and have a chance at staying in office, that’s the one scenario we could do it in 2015. If not, we’ll do it in 2017.”

Cruz reiterated that he can repeal “every single word” of the law.

When host Jonathan Karl asked if Cruz was positive a repeal was possible with Obama in the White House, the senator indicated it wasn’t a large factor.

“You know, what’s funny, Jon, is the media treats that as a bizarre proposition,” Cruz said.

“Well, it is,” Karl responded. “It is a bizarre proposition.”

Cruz then said that pushing for a full repeal was the best way for the GOP to win elections in 2014.

Putin’s Man in Crimea Is Ukraine’s Worst Nightmare
    Simon Shuster / Simferopol @shustry

Little is known about Sergei Aksyonov, the pro-Russia Crimean leader, who rose from obscurity in a month and who is driving the region toward secession

A month ago, when Ukraine’s old regime was just starting to crack under the pressure of a revolution, few people in the country had ever heard of Sergei Aksyonov. He was then a marginal figure even in the local politics of the region of Crimea. His Russian Unity party had only three seats in the regional legislature and no representation anywhere else. But that has not stopped him from taking charge. In late January, as the protesters in Kiev began seizing government buildings, Aksyonov started to form an army on the Crimean peninsula. Now he is the de facto leader of the entire region, a post that has thrust him into the center of the most dire political crisis Europe has confronted in years.

    Good morning POU.

Senate Passes Military Sexual Assault Bill Scrapping ‘Good Soldier Defense’

[….] The new legislation would change the military rules of evidence to prohibit the accused from using good military character as an element of his defense in court-martial proceedings unless it was directly relevant to the alleged crime. The “good soldier defense” could encompass a defendant’s military record of reliability, dependability, professionalism and reputation as an individual who could be counted on in war and peacetime.[….]

The measure also would give accusers a greater say in whether their cases are litigated in the military system or civilian and would
establish a confidential process to allow alleged victims to challenge
their separation or discharge from the military. In addition, it would
increase the accountability of commanders and extend all changes related to sexual assault cases to the service academies.[….]

Some changes already have been made in the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Outraged lawmakers — Democrats and Republicans — rewrote parts last year, stripping commanders of their ability to overturn military jury convictions. That law also requires a civilian review if a commander declines to prosecute a case and requires that any individual convicted of sexual assault face a dishonorable discharge or dismissal. The law also provides alleged victims with legal counsel, eliminates the statute of limitations for courts-martial in rape and sexual assault cases and criminalizes retaliation against victims who report a sexual assault.[….]

Why the GOP Cares About Poverty Now: Poor People Are Looking More White

[….] Maybe the war-on-the-war-on-poverty message has less to do with faulty data and midterm chances than something a lot simpler: the GOP’s favorite all-purpose boogeyman – the Welfare Queen – has been replaced with a poor population that looks a lot more, well, white.[….] None of which is really all that surprising, but some of which is: politicians have long manipulated facts to their advantage, and there hasn’t, sadly, been a lot of political advantage to be had from Republicans helping the poor.

But as the middle class has eroded, the maker-taker divide that conservatives have so exploited over the past 30 years, well, it’s eroded along with it. Lower-middle class whites who once viewed themselves as middle or upper-middle class are now struggling to find work and filing for government assistance, just like those mythical Welfare Queens they were brought up to disdain.[….]

    • morphus

I’m cynical about GOP’s sudden ‘concern’ about poor people. Even in the old days of welfare the system was ‘gerrymandered’ e.g. A single parent in the urban centers received for instance $75 for one child while a single parent in the then primarily white suburbs received $300. What was the justification of this practice? The mom in suburbs had a grown to expect a higher standard of living. At the end of day, they will always find a way to distribute dollars to their targeted demographics.

      • creolechild

Interesting fact about welfare benefits being gerrymandered but it makes sense because their worldview encompasses the belief that it’s perfectly acceptable for white women to be stay-at-home moms–but black women with children should work. The GOP’s primary concern isn’t necessarily about everyone, just the increasing number of whites who find themselves among the ranks of the working poor. Can’t have that now, can we? They’ll take some type of action to ensure that they don’t receive the backlash that’s sure to ensue for not acting quickly to assist “their own.”

States Veto Food Stamp Cuts as $8.6 Billion Deal Fades

Congress last month passed a revamp of agriculture and food policy that was supposed to save the U.S. government $8.6 billion in food-stamp costs over a decade. That may not happen now that some states are finding a way to avoid the cuts. New York, Connecticut and Pennsylvania are triggering extra nutrition spending by adding money to a home-heating subsidy tied to increased food-stamp aid.

The move feeds needy families while thwarting spending-reduction goals. Deficit watchers say they’re disappointed, while anti-hunger activists are lobbying other states to do the same. If more follow, the federal government would have to spend much of the $8.6 billion it planned to save, as states reduce spending on other programs to meet the new mandate.[….]

    – – –President Obama Makes a Fool of Rupert Murdoch by Being a Real Leader

    – – —Rupert Murdoch is so used to running the White House during the good old days under the Bush administration, when a Bush administration fax would be read verbatim on his airwaves without acknowledging that it came from the White House, that he can’t help but try to order President Obama around.

So it was that Sunday morning, Rupert Murdoch tried to dictate foreign policy to President Obama.
Naturally, because he’s a conservative, this involved jumping the gun
on the missing Malaysian airliner and claiming that for sure terrorists
did it, and then merging that event together with Russia’s actions in a
general jihad against terrorism (sound familiar?). “777crash confirms
jihadists turning to make trouble for China. Chance for US to make
common cause, befriend China while Russia bullies.”

    – —His alleged goal? To get the US and China to come together against Russia. (In actuality, his goal was clearly to reignite the “war on terrorism” or else why would he have brought up the plane crash and terrorism at all.)

Border Patrol Issues New Use Of Deadly Force Policy For Border Crossers

[….] The U.S. Border Patrol released a directive — effective immediately — stating that agents “shall not discharge their firearms at a moving vehicle unless the agent has a reasonable belief, based on the totality of the circumstances that deadly force is being used against an agent or another person present.” Agents can only use deadly force when a moving vehicle is driving at them, but the use of deadly force does not extend to “moving vehicles merely fleeing from agents.”

The directive also prohibits agents from placing themselves “in the path of a moving vehicle or [using] their body to block a vehicle’s path” — significant given that the leaked review found that agents deliberately blocked vehicles in order to justify shooting the driver. [….] Since 2005, border agents have killed at least 42 people, including 13 Americans, according to the Arizona Republic. And since 2010, border agents have been assaulted with rocks 1,713 times “and responded with deadly force 43 times, resulting in 10 deaths,”[….]

Separated by War, 9-yo Speaks to Mom for First Time in a Year

[….] Thanks to the humanitarian effort facilitated by Vodafone,
nine-year-old Nirere was able to speak to her mother for the first time since they were separated 15 months ago. Minani manages four free humanitarian calling booths at the Mugunga Refuge Camp in Goma as part of the Instant Network program run by the Vodafone Foundation, the company’s philanthropic arm. 17,000 displaced people in the camp have connected with friends and family with the free mobile calls.[….]

The moments of reunion, along with little Nirere’s, are both featured in the film launched today on Firsts.com.[….] People living at the Mugunga camp are given five minutes of free calls a week. Since
the project opened in the camp in October 2013, more than two thousand calls each week have eased the burdens of the refugees there.(WATCH the video below)

Plastic shopping bags make a fine diesel fuel, researchers report

[….] The conversion produces significantly more energy than it requires and results in transportation fuels – diesel, for example – that can be blended with existing ultra-low-sulfur diesels and biodiesels. Other products, such as natural gas, naphtha (a solvent), gasoline, waxes and lubricating oils such as engine oil and hydraulic oil also can be obtained from shopping bags. A report of the new study appears in the journal Fuel Processing Technology.[…]

Americans throw away about 100 billion plastic shopping bags each year, according to the Worldwatch Institute. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that only about 13 percent are recycled. The rest of the bags end up in landfills or escape to the wild, blowing across the landscape and entering waterways. Plastic bags make up a sizeable portion of the plastic debris in giant ocean garbage patches that are killing wildlife and littering beaches. Plastic bags “have been detected as far north and south as the poles,” the researchers wrote.[….]

Obama to Israel: “If not now, when?”

In a far-reaching interview with Jeffrey Goldberg on Sunday, President Obama made clear, perhaps for the first time in his presidency, that his administration will primarily fault Israel if the current U.S.-brokered peace negotiations fail, as expected.[….]

Perhaps even more striking are Obama’s blunt words with regard to his view of Israeli Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, and his
administration’s record settlement expansions:[….] ….”If Palestinians come to believe that the possibility of a contiguous sovereign Palestinian state is no longer within reach, then our ability to manage the international fallout is going to be limited. The condemnation of the international community can translate into a
lack of cooperation when it comes to key security interests. It means reduced influence for us, the United States, in issues that are of interest to Israel. It’s survivable, but it is not preferable.”

These words are more than just warning shots, they are a prediction. If the Kerry-led peace talks fail, Obama is reiterating what Kerry has already said: that the international movement to boycott and isolate Israel will simply intensify.[….] And how did Netanyahu react to Obama’s words? In his AIPAC speech, Netanyahu strangely echoed leftist talking points, expressing the fruits that peace could bring to Israel.[….]

I think the Americans need to go ahead and finally acknowledge that the Israelis are not negotiating in good faith. This whole current peace process is merely a facade. The Israelis control the economies, borders, airspace of Gaza and the West Bank. They continue with settlement expansion with impunity. Any serious deal will curb some of this control. Have they shown any willingness to want to do that?

These 9 countries pay a higher minimum wage than the US – Posted March 5, 2014

US President Barack Obama is slated to push his proposal for a minimum wage increase again Wednesday, this time before a group of governors meeting in Connecticut. Obama and other Democrats want the federal wage raised from $7.25 to $10.10 an hour, but most Republicans are opposed, saying it will cost too many jobs and hurt the still-fragile economy. Some conservatives even want the concept eliminated entirely.

However, compared to other countries, America really isn’t paying its poorest workers all that much. These nine countries pay a higher minimum wage than the United States[….] Wages were adjusted for purchasing power parity and used 2012 US dollars as the base year:

    1. Luxembourg ($10.66/hour)
    2. France ($10.60/hour)
    3. Australia ($10.21/hour)
    4. Belgium ($9.97/hour)
    5. The Netherlands ($9.48/hour)
    6. Ireland ($9.01/hour)
    7. New Zealand ($8.62/hour)
    8. United Kingdom ($7.88/hour)

Detroit Doesn’t Need Hipsters To Survive, It Needs Black People

Posted: 03/10/2014 1:12 pm EDT Updated: 03/10/2014 2:59 pm EDT
    Print Article

Last month, Thomas Sugrue, the scholar who literally wrote the book on Detroit, traveled to the Motor City to deliver a tough message to business and political leaders. Detroit’s comeback, he said, depends on whether the city can improve the lives of working-class African-Americans.

“Revitalization” is a buzzword in the city, which filed for bankruptcy last year and grapples with widespread blight and high unemployment and poverty rates. In spite of all this, Detroit is often celebrated as a hipster paradise and tourist destination by national media outlets.

But Sugrue said Detroit’s recent successes in its downtown area and in Midtown, the city’s cultural center, aren’t benefiting the majority of residents.

With a population that is 83 percent African American, Detroit is blacker than any big city in America. But black people might not be the ones whom revitalization is helping. Urban theorists like Richard Florida have long maintained that the key to rejuvenating a city is to attract young, creative professionals who will bring about economic transformation. But Sugrue says that in practice, this strategy only helps a select few, while leaving everybody else no better off than before — a phenomenon he calls “trickle-down urbanism.”

Court to Kansas: Spend More on Schools

NYT: Little Know Health Act Fact: Prison Inmates Are Signing Up

In a little-noticed outcome of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, jails and prisons around the country are beginning to sign up inmates for health insurance under the law, taking advantage of the expansion of Medicaid that allows states to extend coverage to single and childless adults — a major part of the prison population. State and counties are enrolling inmates for two main reasons. Although Medicaid does not cover standard health care for inmates, it can pay for their hospital stays beyond 24 hours — meaning states can transfer millions of dollars of obligations to the federal government. But the most important benefit of the program, corrections officials say, is that inmates who are enrolled in Medicaid while in jail or prison can have coverage after they get out.

People coming out of jail or prison have disproportionately high rates of chronic diseases, especially mental illness and addictive disorders. Few, however, have insurance, and many would qualify for Medicaid under the income test for the program — 138 percent of the poverty line — in the 25 states that have elected to expand their programs. Health care experts estimate that up to 35 percent of those newly eligible for Medicaid under Mr. Obama’s health care law are people with histories of criminal justice system involvement, including jail and prison inmates and those on parole or probation. “For those newly covered, it will open up treatment doors for them” and potentially save money in the long run by reducing recidivism, said Dr. Fred Osher, director of health systems and services policy for the Council of State Governments Justice Center. He added that a 2009 study in Washington State found that low-income adults who received treatment for addiction had significantly fewer arrests than those who were untreated.

This obsession with “Black Twitter” concerns me.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michael Dunn’s conviction of attempted murder — but not actual murder — in the shooting death of black teenager Jordan Davis prompted the creation of hashtag #dangerousblackkids on Twitter. Users posted photos of black babies and toddlers, spoofing the fear that Dunn testified he felt before opening fire on a car full of teens at a convenience store.

That was the calling card of Black Twitter, a small corner of the social media giant where an unabashedly black spin on life gets served up 140 characters at a time.

Black Twitter holds court on pretty much everything from President Barack Obama to the latest TV reality show antics. But Black Twitter can also turn activist quickly. When it does, things happen — like the cancellation of a book deal for a juror in the George Zimmerman trial, or the demise of Zimmerman’s subsequent attempt to star at celebrity boxing.

Catchy hashtags give clues that the tweeting in question is a Black Twitter thing.

The Democrats Stand Up to the Kochs

Democrats have for too long been passive in the face of the vast amounts of corporate money, most of it secret, that are being spent to evict them from office and dismantle their policies. By far the largest voice in many of this year’s political races, for example, has been that of the Koch brothers, who have spent tens of millions of dollarspeddling phony stories about the impact of health care reform, all in order to put Republicans in control of the Senate after the November elections.

Now Democrats are starting to fight back, deciding they should at least try to counter the tycoons with some low-cost speech of their own. Democrats may never have the same resources at their disposal — no party should — but they can use their political pulpits to stand up for a few basic principles, including the importance of widespread health-insurance coverage, environmental protection and safety-net programs.

The leader of this effort has been Senator Harry Reid, the majority leader, who has delivered a series of blistering attacks against the Kochs and their ads on the Senate floor over the last few weeks. In addition, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has set up a website, http://www.kochaddiction.com, to remind voters of just what the Kochs stand for, and why they raised $407 million in the 2012 election. And individual candidates are making sure voters know who is paying for the ad blitz.

Remember the black journo that worked for Politico and was fired for speaking the truth about Romney?
My Life as a Retail Worker: Nasty, Brutish, and Cheap

After veteran reporter Joseph Williams lost his job, he could only find employment in a sporting-goods store. In a personal essay, he recalls his struggles with challenges millions of Americans return to day after day.
JOSEPH WILLIAMS MAR 11 2014, 11:50 AM ET

My plunge into poverty happened in an instant. I never saw it coming.

Then again, there was no reason to feel particularly vulnerable. Two years ago, I was a political reporter at Politico, and I spent my days covering the back-and-forth of presidential politics. I had access to the White House because of my reporting beat, and I was a regular commentator on MSNBC. My career had been on an upward trajectory for 30 years, and at age 50 I still anticipated a long career.

On June 21, 2012, I was invited to discuss race, Republican candidate Mitt Romney, and the 2012 presidential election on MSNBC. I said this:

“Romney is very, very comfortable, it seems, with people who are like him. That’s one of the reasons why he seems so stiff and awkward in town hall settings … But when he comes on ‘Fox and Friends,’ they’re like him. They’re white folks who are very much relaxed in their own company.”

The political Internet exploded. Because I’m an African American, enraged conservative bloggers branded me an anti-white racist. Others on the right, like Andrew Breitbart’s Big Media, mined my personal Twitter account and unearthed a crude Romney joke I’d carelessly retweeted a month before. The Romney campaign cried foul. In less than two weeks I was out of a job.

Spraying Toxic Coal Ash Is A Cheap And Popular Way To De-Ice Roads

The months of relentless winter weather that have pummeled much of the nation have forced many communities to get creative when it comes to de-icing roads. With salt for roads in short supply, everything from beet juice to cheese brine is being used to help drivers stay in control on slippery streets — including coal ash.

That’s right, for years, cities and towns in Pennsylvania, Ohio, New
Mexico, Missouri, Oklahoma, Virginia, Illinois, Iowa, and Colorado have sprayed the toxic waste on roads to combat winter ice and snow. Municipalities often get it for free from power plants who are eager to dispose of it somehow and it never seems to be in short supply.[….] According to the American Coal Ash Association, 256,000 tons of coal ash were distributed for use on roads in 2012.

Washington— A Dexter cancer patient featured in a conservative group’s TV ad campaign denouncing her new health care coverage as “unaffordable” will save more than $1,000 this year.

The Detroit News and fact checkers last month cast doubt on the accuracy of the TV ad. On Monday, Boonstra acknowledged which health plan she chose, offering the first evidence of cost savings..

Boonstra said Monday her new plan she dislikes is the Blue Cross Premier Gold health care plan, which caps patient responsibility for out-of-pocket costs at $5,100 a year, lower than the federal law’s maximum of $6,350 a year. It means the new plan will save her at least $1,200 compared with her former insurance plan she preferred that was ended under Obamacare’s coverage requirements.

MAP: This Is What The Internet Looks Like

Here’s a map from telecom data company TeleGeography that shows how the Internet works around the world. The map charts out all the undersea fiber optic cables that send Internet communication from country to country. There are more fiber optic cables that are land based, but they’re not charted here. Paul Brodsky, an analyst at Telegeography explained the map to us, saying, “The vast majority of Internet traffic travels on fiber optic cables.” Many people think Internet connections go through satellites, says Brodsky, but that’s not the case.

They run through these undersea cables. The companies that lay these cables have fiber optic cables on a giant spool on their ships. “The ship goes from country A to country B,” says Brodsky, “They literally just lay it on the bottom of the ocean. Close to the shore, they trench it out, but at a certain distance from the coast it just lays on the bottom of the ocean.” A fiber optic cable is about the size of a human hair and it sends laser light pulses that deliver messages in milliseconds from New York to London.[….]

Diversity reaches new levels in Honey Maid ads

[….] On Monday, Honey Maid will jump on the diversity bandwagon with a far-reaching campaign by the 90-year-old graham cracker brand that raises the use of diversity in mainstream ads to a whole new level. In one 30-second Honey Maid ad, viewers will see everything from a same-sex couple bottle-feeding their son to an interracial couple and their three kids holding hands. The ad also features a Hispanic mother and an African-American father with their three mixed-race children. And there’s even a father covered in body tattoos.

This is not some shockvertisement for Benetton. It’s an ad for one of America’s oldest and most familiar brands. The people in it are not actors, but real families. The message of the ad: These are wholesome families enjoying wholesome snacks. It’s a brand new, multicolored, multisexual world of advertising. Major mainstream brands are plowing ahead and all but ignoring the expected social media blow-back, with one eye on demographics and another on survival.[….]

Philly Mag: NYT: Christie Turned Twin Towers Wreckage Into “Politically Motivated Gifts”

The New York Times reports this morning that Chris Christie’s administration used wreckage from 9/11 as “politically motivated gifts,” part of a politicization of the Port Authority that is coming under increasing scrutiny from federal prosecutors in the wake of the Bridgegate scandal. For a state that lost hundreds of lives on Sept. 11, the gifts were emotionally resonant: pieces of steel from the ruins of the World Trade Center. They were presented by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to 20 carefully chosen New Jersey mayors who sat atop a list of 100 whose endorsements Gov. Chris Christie hoped to win. At photo opportunities around the mangled pieces of steel, Bill Baroni, Mr. Christie’s top staff appointee at the Port Authority, told audiences how many people wanted a similar remnant of the destroyed buildings, and how special these mayors were.

Mayors lower on the list of 100 — such as Mark Sokolich, of Fort Lee, at No. 45 — received other Port Authority perquisites: an intimate tour of the National September 11 Memorial, or the new World Trade Center construction site, or Port Authority money for jobs programs or new firefighting equipment, even in towns far from the port. Turning wreckage of the twin towers into politically motivated gifts before Mr. Christie’s 2013 re-election was only one example. The authority became a means to reward friends (or hire them) and punish adversaries, and a bank to be used when Mr. Christie sought to avoid raising taxes. Major policy initiatives, such as instituting a large toll and fare increase in 2011, were treated like political campaigns to burnish the governor’s image.

    – – –‘Boondocks’ creator Aaron McGruder preps ‘Black Jesus’ for Adult Swim – –

    — –Aaron McGruder, the politically incorrect mind behind the cult cartoon hit The Boondocks, has even more irreverent premise up his sleeve.
McGruder has inked a deal with Adult Swim for a live action show called Black Jesus, which will co-star comic actors John Witherspoon and Charlie Murphy.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, “the new half-hour live-action scripted comedy finds Jesus living in present-day Compton, Calif., on a daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers.”

Largely unknown actor Gerald “Slink” Johnson will take on the lead role and the series is expected to debut sometime this year.

    – —Senate votes to end taxpayer funding of political conventions – –
    – – – –The Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would end the use of taxpayer money for presidential nominating conventions.
The legislation, which is now headed to President Obama’s desk, would take the $126 million that is used to fund the annual convention parties and instead designate it for pediatric medical research.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) asked and received
unanimous consent to pass H.R. 2019, the Gabriella Miller Kids First
Research Act, on Tuesday morning. The House passed the same bill late last year in a 295-103 vote.

“It’s hard to imagine that there would be any objection to moving these funds to something we can all agree is a high priority — pediatric research,”McConnell said.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) praised the Senate for passing the bill, which he championed in the House. The bill is named after Gabriella Miller, a 10-year-old girl from Virginia who died in October from a brain tumor after making a public push for increased funding for cancer research.
    – —SNIP- – –
    – – -Reid pointed out it was only an authorization bill, not an appropriations bill. “It will not happen until we appropriate money for this,” Reid said.
