Tuesday Open Thread: Showstoppers! African American Milliners

Good Morning POU!

We certainly couldn’t honor the Milliners of our communities without acknowledging the creator of the fabulous designs worn by the late great Dorothy Heights! Meet her personal milliner, Vanilla Beane.

Ninety-year-old Vanilla Beane is a milliner who knows that a hat can be so much more than mere headgear.

Look no further than Beane’s favorite customer: civil rights pioneer Dorothy Height, whose hats were known far and wide as a statement of her dignity and grace.

When Height died at age 98 this spring, some of her friends and admirers – Beane among them — wore hats to her funeral as a final tribute. The audience was dotted with colorful creations and the eulogist-in-chief noted Height’s most distinctive feature in his remarks.

“We loved those hats that she wore like a crown,” President Barack Obama said.

Now one of Beane’s creations is to be immortalized in a modest memorial to Height in front of the southwest Washington building where the civil rights leader lived for 27 years: A metal replica of a Vanilla Beane original — painted hot pink — will be placed atop one of the city’s obsolete emergency call boxes this month, part of a citywide initiative to restore the 19th-century structures as works of art.

Beane, a rare practitioner of an old-fashioned art form, has her own remarkable story.

She began her hat business after retiring from the federal government, and 30 years later her creations remain very much in demand in an age when few people wear hats and many of those who do are content with mass-produced headgear from China.

Beane still works full time at Bene Millinery, her boutique in the Manor Park neighborhood of northwest Washington.

“I just enjoy being here,” Beane said recently, surrounded by finished and unfinished hats of all shapes, styles and colors. The work provided a welcome distraction after the 1980 death of her son in a boating accident and the 1993 death of her husband.

“It just helped me through these trying times that I’ve had,” Beane said.

Born in Wilson, N.C., Vanilla Powell was the youngest of seven. After coming to Washington, she met her husband, whose last name yielded the unexpected combination with her first name. (She says she didn’t even think about it until someone remarked on it about a year after the wedding.)

Beane became interested in hats when she was working as an elevator operator in a downtown building that housed Washington Millinery Supply. She liked to sew and would often stop in the shop to look around and pick up materials. In 1955, she was hired as a seamstress.

“She had very much talent, but she didn’t have the design know-how in those days,” recalled Richard Dietrick Sr., the owner of Washington Millinery Supply. “She picked it up very quickly.”

Beane eventually left the company and went to work as a mail clerk for the General Services Administration. But hatmaking continued to be her passion: She’d make them at home and sell them at hat parties.

Dietrick eventually decided to move Washington Millinery closer to his home in Maryland and focus on bridal headpieces and veils.

“You girls quit wearing hats, more or less,” said Dietrick, 85.

But hat fashion lived on in the African-American community, particularly in the churches, and Beane bought much of the store’s remaining inventory.

“Then I had to find a place to put it,” Beane said. After retiring from the government, she opened her own shop on Third Street.

The store next door is Lovely Lady Boutique, where Height bought many of her clothes. She’d stop by Beane’s to get a matching hat.

Lovely Lady’s owner, Ethel Sanders, said Beane has a keen eye for fashion and manages to make her hats up-to-date.

“There are not very many milliners around, and she happens to be one of the best,” Sanders said.

Beane, whose custom-made creations can run up to $500, said she believes hats are making a small comeback, thanks in part to church-sponsored teas and the attention paid to Height toward the end of her life and around her funeral.

When Beane is not busy working on an order for a customer, she experiments with new designs for herself.

“It’s hard for me to find a hat that suits me because I don’t like too large a hat,” Beane said. “I’m very conservative.”

    Mornin’ POU!

Welp! PBO shook hands with Raul Castro at Mandela’s memorial, and the U.S. media have lost their minds! Look at this lying mofo:

West Wing Reports Verified account @WestWingReport
President’s handshake w/Cuba’s Raul Castro will be much discussed. First contact since 2000. Obama, 6’1″, had to “bow” – Castro is short

Since when is a tall person bending down to shake the hand of a short person considered bowing???

And according to this descendent of Miss Millie, how dare those ungrateful negroes booed their white savior:

    Marc Caputo @MarcACaputo
If Prez Bush were booed in South Africa, it speaks to profound ignorance/ungrateful-ness re his work to combat AIDS on the continent

Yeah, nevermind the fact that Bush’s AIDS relief to Africa came with a bunch of ridiculous right wing stipulations.

    • crazycanuck

Well we knew they would lose their collective minds over that handshake.

    • conlakappa

His daddy was part of an administration that ignored AIDS for years. While I commend his efforts, yeah, the things like no sex ed and problems with condom distribution are not good.

Today is a snow day! Normally I would be stoked but it is a busy week. Calls/work planned and I am supposed to have a presentation in Richmond tomorrow.

      • MsKitty

I made the call to have a snow day. Not sure my boss was thrilled but 6 inches of predicted snow + office 25 miles away = no way in hell I’m driving. Especially when I can easily access my files and emails from here. Times like this wish my old boss was still around, he wouldn’t have cared.

        • Guns3000

          Slacker

        • conlakappa

Mind you, it’s essentially a work day but from home, which hardly meets the standard for a snow day, does it?! I had a conference call with a client at 9:30, an internal call at 10:00 and three other calls for later today, the last of which is at 4:30 p.m. Prepping for Richmond, however the hell that will turn out. I worked from home Friday, the 1/2 day yesterday before heading to a client in Baltimore. The first time I might potentially see my office will be Thursday. Then off to Des Moines this weekend. Yippee! /first-world whining

New Media Narrative: A Clinton Insider Must Save Obama!

John Podesta to formally join Obama inner circle
By Philip Rucker, Published: December 9

John D. Podesta, who was chief of staff to President Bill Clinton and
is one of the Democratic Party’s most experienced strategists, is
joining the White House to help President Obama salvage what has become a difficult second term.

Podesta, who has been an outside adviser to Obama since leading
his presidential transition after the 2008 election, will formally join
his inner circle as White House counselor for a year, according to
    sources familiar with the move.

U.S. set to adopt Volcker rule to curb bank trading gambles
    By Douwe Miedema
    WASHINGTON Tue Dec 10, 2013 6:15am EST

(Reuters) – U.S. regulators are set on Tuesday to approve a rule to rein in risky trading by banks, a crucial part of their efforts to reform Wall Street and prevent another costly taxpayer bailout.

The Volcker rule, named after former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, who championed the reform, prohibits banks from betting on financial markets with their own money, a practice known as proprietary trading.

The rule, which has now mushroomed into 800 pages, will also bar them from owning more than 3 percent of hedge funds or private equity funds.

The final version of the crackdown is expected to be tougher than when it was proposed two years ago, after JPMorgan Chase & Co’s $6 billion
loss in 2012 – nicknamed the London Whale after the bank’s huge
positions – highlighted the perils of speculative trading.

Federal government offices are closed today due to the icy conditions, and I didn’t have to go to work today,so I had a chance to watch the last two hours of the Nelson Mandela memorial service. I think it was serendipity that the government was closed, so as many more people could experience the amazing experience of the memorial.

Obamas Greeted By ‘Deafening Roar’ At Mandela Memorial
    TOM KLUDT – DECEMBER 10, 2013, 7:04 AM EST3075

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama received quite the welcome Tuesday at a memorial service for Nelson Mandela.

According to a White House pool report, a “deafening roar” echoed throughout FNB Stadium in Soweto, South Africa when the Obamas were shown on the video screens. The cheering reportedly lasted nearly 30 seconds.

The President also drew a thunderous ovation when he approached the podium to deliver remarks in honor of the late South African leader.

    • qosine

      ‘Deafening Roar’. It sure was!!

    Morning, Fam!

Missed seeing President Obama’s speech earlier… I tuned in during President Castro’s speech. Glad both men told it and told it all – there will be no revisionist history here!

I have read many accolades about President Obama’s speech. I don’t think I’m quite ready to view it. It seems like it was only three days ago when I sat on my parents’ sofa to watch live coverage of President Mandela being released from prison. I remember vividly his stride, how wonderful he looked after 27 years of incarceration and the immensity of the moment.

    Fam, have a peaceful day.

Dan Rather: Lara Logan Was Fooled, But Shouldn’t Be Fired (VIDEO)

    CATHERINE THOMPSON – DECEMBER 10, 2013, 9:24 AM

CBS correspondent Lara Logan was taken in by a “fraud” in the case of her “60 Minutes” Benghazi report, veteran anchor Dan Rather said Monday, but that incident alone shouldn’t be grounds to fire her.

“In my opinion, clearly labeled ‘No,’” Rather said when asked by CNN host Piers Morgan whether the bungled report should end Logan’s career. “And I’m so glad you mentioned that. Whatever one thinks of what Lara Logan did or didn’t do with this story, in fairness, it should be put against her whole record. She’s still a very young correspondent, but for a young correspondent has a distinguished record. It should be seen in that context and in that perspective.”

CBS announced weeks after the Benghazi report was retracted that Logan and her producer, Max McClellan, were taking a leave of absence from “60 Minutes.”

In GWB Hearing, “Aberrant” and “Illegal” Lane Ploy by Christie Men Draws Fire
    Monday, December 09, 2013 – 08:10 PM
    WNYC By Andrea Bernstein

For as long as anyone can remember the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has worked like this: Two governors divide up the board and staff appointments, and the contracts that flow from that. No one blows the whistle on anyone else, because that might jeopardize one’s own spoils.

On Monday, the whistle blew as long and loud as a foghorn by the shoals of the Hudson River.

The setting was a hearing room in Trenton, where State Assembly member John Wisniewksi decided to exercise a rare authority – using his subpoena power to summon officials to explain why three lanes onto the George Washington Bridge had been abruptly closed in September, causing a week’s worth of traffic and sending the Port Authority’s Executive Director, Cuomo appointee Pat Foye, into a rage.

Back in September, Foye charged in a heated email that the closures
were made without proper public notice, in possible violation of the
law, and, in fact, without his knowledge. He immediately reversed the
    closures.

But Democrats were swift to raise the possibility the lane closures had been made as political retribution against the Mayor of Fort Lee, a
Democrat, who, unlike some Democrats, had not endorsed Christie for
reelection. There was a lot of whispering during Christie’s re-election
campaign that he had a “naughty and nice list” but no one had been able to prove it. Now, there was talk, there might be some evidence.

A spokesman for the Sudanese embassy confirmed to South Africa’s Sunday Independent newspaper that President Omar al-Bashir would not be going, in order to avoid any complications associated with his indictment by the International Criminal Court.

    Hola Peeps! Random thoughts…

What a beautiful memorial, a celebration of an extraordinary life! Our Prez was magnificent as usual & the crowd loved him! The rain was considered a blessing, btw. I suppose our media will dwell on the handshake & say that PBO “bowed” to Raul Castro. I watched from SABC online, so much better than US media which I will totally ignore.

One trivial thing I have always enjoyed about Nelson Mandela is that he always wore such great & colorful shirts. I suppose that after years of wearing drab prison clothes he really enjoyed indulging a thirst for color & design. I hope they dressed him beautifully for his next journey & not in some drab suit.

I’m rambling….I feel like I have been up half the night but I didn’t want to miss anything. Have a great day!

    • JojoRaze

Thanks for this. i read and did a paper on Harriet Jacobs slave narrative and the runaway announcement saying she ran away without cause or provocation is laughably sickening. Ms. Jacobs ran away after hiding in the attic of her slave master’s house for seven years because her owner’s husband wanted her to be his concubine and she didn’t. The owner, the wife , blamed Harriet and not her trifling husband. It,s a very interesting slave narrative and the story is a lot more involved. Harriet wanted to marry a free man of color but her owners wouldn’t let her-the husband because he wanted Her for himself. Harriet tried to getb with another single and white man and had kids with him to keep the maarried master away from her. This white dude wanted to marry her but the slave master wouldn’t sell Harriet to any freeman white or black because he wanted her.

      • crazycanuck

Thanks for the background, I’m going to have to read up about this now.

I think it’s weird to send family photo Christmas cards to people you hardly know. You know what I mean? If you’re just friendly but don’t hang out or speak on a regular basis I don’t want your family pic. lol
Every year we get these from people my hubby knew or worked with while in the USMC. I barely know any of them but every year they send family pic cards for Christmas. And when family comes over they say who are all those white people? LOL

    • Aquagranny911

LMAO @ “who are all those white people?”

      • Alma98

        LOL

    • conlakappa

Aw, Alma, they just want their friends to know they know some good black people! Lawsy, there was this Mormon chick online who sent a Christmas card out with her, her husband, and her unfortunate-looking children. It was like a capsule of The King Family [don't front like you didn't watch them on ABC when you were a kid!] gone wrong.

      • Alma98

        LMAO!

      • malletgirl02

So Alma98 and her husband is that family’s conveniant “black friends”?

        • conlakappa

Ha! Maybe. I am sure that Alma and Mr. Alma are perfectly lovely people with whom people like to keep ties. But this family isn’t keeping ties but just taking up space on the Alma Family’s mantle. I’ve been in too many weird situations when I felt targeted for friendship just so the person could claim, “I see black people… socially!” when I didn’t feel any kinship with them. Like not even the smallest thing in common. That Mormon woman tried with me, by the way, but I wasn’t having it. The card I heard about from the young!gay!guy!in!NYC!, another favorite of the friend collectors. Well, the NYC part is extra.

Cuba is not Germany, Raul is not Adolph. This is 2013 not 1939. We need to mend our relations with Cuba which I feel confident will happen by the time PBO leaves office.

    • rigoletta

I just can’t with these people.

Castro didn’t kill millions people he liberated millions of people.

      • crazycanuck

They been mad at Castro since Batista, you know the one they loved so much.

        • Aquagranny911

They loved Batista because he was selling Cuba off to US Corporations & the Mafia. Fidel put a big spoke in the wheel of that one!

        • malletgirl02

I could never understand the portrayal of Batista as this innocent leader who the big bad Castro deposed. Like Castro Batista was a dictator. Kennedy did the right thing in not supporting the Bay of Pigs invasion by the Batista supporters. Like their leader they were thugs.

    • conlakappa
