Tuesday Open Thread: The Black Madonna & Child (Dedicated to Megyn Kelly)

GOOD MORNING PRAGOBOTS!

We continue our series on The Black Madonna and Child

THE BLACK VIRGIN OF OROPA
Piedmont, Italy

From Wikipedia:

The Black Virgin of Oropa, is the statute of the Virgin Mary (Mother of Jesus) located in the Sacro Monte di Oropa. The Sacro Monte di Oropa (literally ‘Sacred Mount of Oropa’) is the Roman Catholic devotional complex in the commune of Biella, Piedmont, northern Italy. It is one of the nine Sacri Monti of Piedmont and Lombardy and is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

History

The original image of the Black Virgin of Monte Oropa was made in the third century. She was brought by St. Eusebius of Vercelli from the Middle East to his diocese of Vercelli. The image was made of cedar of Lebanon and painted black. A mid-fourth century intensified the persecution of Mary (mother of Jesus), and St. Eusebius must hide to her in the mountains of Sacro Monte di Oropa, about 9 miles from Biella, Italy. When they tried to move the image, weight increased and they had to leave her there, in the mountains, where he currently presides over a shrine of great proportions. Before the Christians, celts had got a black fertility goddess which was replaced by her. Black Virgin is also known like Madonna Nera di Oropa or María Reina de Monte Oropa, and she is the patroness of Lomas del Mirador City, in La Matanza Partido, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina.

The results of those GOP Governors refusing to expand Medicaid:

    * Some 4.8 million uninsured non-elderly American adults nationwide are likely to fall into the Medicaid gap.

    * Some 79 percent of those who fall into the Medicaid gap are from the south (where Republican governors have disproportionately decided not to opt in).

    * Those falling into the Medicaid gap are disproportionately non-white. Some 53 percent of them are black, Hispanic or “other.”

    * Some 47 percent of those falling into the Medicaid gap — over 2.2 million people — are white. If attacks on beneficiaries of the Medicaid expansion as freeloaders and takers have “racial undertones,” as National Journal argued the other day, this is a reminder that huge numbers of poor whites will also be impacted by the refusal of GOP governors to opt into the expansion.

    • Town

But the white people will have their freedom, and isn’t that what really matters?

Dan Beecher and his wife, Louise Coogan Beecher, unemployed since they lost their jobs in the 2008 housing crash, couldn’t find any affordable health insurance.

As a couple older than 50, they were offered premiums of $700 per month, which was too much for them to afford.

After being uninsured for five years, the couple recently was insured under the Affordable Health Act. They signed up during an enrollment fair for the Affordable Care Act in Cornwall last Saturday and found they were eligible for a government subsidy. Now they qualify for a free health plan.

“We can finally see doctors,” Mrs. Beecher said, wiping her tears.

For Black Cubans, That Handshake Was Hope

Suffering under sanctions, they see small changes under the Obama administration and look for more.
    BY: TONYAA WEATHERSBEE

It’s hard to get excited about a handshake. It is just a courteous gesture, after all.

But for Cubans, particularly many Afro-Cubans, such a gesture between their president and the black president of the superpower just 90 miles north of them fuels hopes for bigger changes.

One such change would be the ultimate lifting of a five-decade long economic embargo that has disproportionately ratcheted up more suffering among black Cubans, who receive far fewer remittance dollars than white Cubans and feel more of the brunt of shortages and hardships, as well as the increasing economic stratification that it abets.

“I knew what happened between Raúl and Obama because my assistant called me on the phone and told me,” said famed Afro-Cuban documentarian Gloria Rolando. . “He said, ‘Gloria! Gloria! Did you hear what happened?’

“That was the most important news that day … people were calling me all day about it. We don’t always make comments about news events, but we did about that one.

Edward Snowden reportedly tells Brazil he’ll help probe NSA spying there if granted asylum

RIO DE JANEIRO — National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden wrote in “an open letter to the Brazilian people” that he would be willing to help Brazil’s government investigate U.S. spying on its soil, but that he could do so only if granted political asylum.

In a letter obtained and published early Tuesday by the respected Folha de S. Paulo newspaper, Snowden said he’s been impressed by the Brazilian government’s strong criticism of the massive NSA spy program targeting Internet and telecommunications around the globe, including monitoring the mobile phone of Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.

Brazilian senators have asked for Snowden’s help during hearings about the NSA program’s aggressive targeting of Brazil, an important transit hub for trans-Atlantic fiber optic cables that are hacked.

“I’ve expressed my willingness to assist where it’s appropriate and legal, but, unfortunately, the U.S. government has been working hard to limit my ability to do so,” said the letter, translated into Portuguese by the newspaper. It didn’t make the English original available online.

“Until a country grants me permanent political asylum, the U.S. government will continue to interfere with my ability to speak out,” the letter added.

Snowden doesn’t know as much as he’s pretending. That mask slipped off months ago. He can’t tell Brazilian intelligence anything they don’t already know. The hacker is in a serious panic right now.

Jeh Johnson Confirmed as Head of Homeland Security

He will be the first African American to head DHS
    By Maya Rhodan @m_rhodanDec. 16, 2013

With a vote of 78-16, the Senate confirmed Jeh Johnson as head of the Department of Homeland Security on Monday. The former Pentagon attorney will oversee policies such as national security, immigration, disaster response and transportation, Politico reports.

Johnson was nominated to replace Janet Napolitano in October, which was cleared by a voice-vote of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Republican Senators John McCain of Arizona and Rand Paul of Kentucky requested that their votes be registered as “no.” During his hearing, McCain and other republicans on the committee wanted answers and information on immigration and border security prior to his approval.

As a general counsel at the Department of Defense, Johnson provided legal approval for military operations approved by the President and Secretary of Defense. He is also credited with authorizing the report that led to the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

The CBC should be raising hell over the states that are punishing its own residents by not expanding medicaid.
    ————————–
Report: Medicaid “coverage gap” mostly hits minorities

Next year, the nation will be split: 25 states and the District of Columbia will expand Medicaid coverage, while 25 states won’t. In those states without expanded coverage, nearly five million people will be ineligible for Medicaid as it exists currently but will be too poor to qualify for subsidies on the new Obamacare marketplaces.

The Kaiser Family Foundation’s Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured reports that of the 4.8 million uninsured adults in the “coverage gap,” nearly 2.6 million (53 percent) are racial or ethnic minority groups. Twenty-seven percent of the uninsured in the gap are black, 21 percent are Hispanic, 47 percent are white, and 5 percent are other races.

No way. There’s not a single shred of evidence that allows them to blame PBO so the story has no legs.

Tavis Smiley and Cornel West convened an entire bus tour across the country “demanding” that PBO act on issues relating to poverty. GOP governors refuse to extend a fully funded ObamaCare program duly enacted by the President causing a massive and material harm to the impoverished, and crickets from these mothersuckers. It just speaks volumes!

    • goldenstar

There needs to be a two-pronged campaign of advocacy for these Medicaid people and a campaign of shaming the CBC. They are Exhibit 1 examples of black fossils.

They cannibalize black freedom fighters in order to afford themselves a moral credibility which is completely unearned. Over and over our heroes are colonized and converted into commodities. I really disdain the gg/Snowden cult.

      • JojoRaze

I think the cannibalizing of our heroes says a lot about the fact that white Americans have so few civil rights heroes because they were the oppressors for so long. All the white heroes are also pretty leftist and East coast–unionists, anarchists, immigrant Italians etc who led the progressive movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries–you know the commies and rabblerousers that the white right don’t like.
They just need to stick with Scherwner and Goodman and Viola Luizzo. And then, the emos are too lazy to even unlatch these people’s shoes; and the white right was the one that killed them.

Reid: You were wrong, Ron Christie
    Posted on December 15, 2013

Anyone who witnessed the uncomfortable moment on the Melissa Harris Perry show this morning when Republican strategist Ron Christie went after Democratic strategist and former Congressional Black Caucus general counsel Angela Rye on the question of whether there were racial undertones to the tea party’s 2010 midterm sweep (and whether he would “allow” her to finish her thought…) no doubt came away with thoughts and feelings about Christie’s tone. But tone aside, Ron was just wrong on the facts.

Ron asserted that there are simply no racial or racist undertones to the tea party, in 2010 or ever. And he got very heated in making that argument. But the science and the empirical evidence beg to differ.

I know it enrages people on the right to point this out, but the fact is that study after studyhas shown that tea party supporters show greater signs of harboring racial resentment than the general population.

    more here: http://blog.reidreport.com/2013/12/you-were-wrong-ron-christie/

    • Alma98

The only person Ron convinced was himself.
The teaparty is the same old klan with a new name.

      • conlakappa

Both are focused on three-cornered headgear and symbolism. Real civil rights isn’t about the emblems but about being about it.

    • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

Why is this even a story? If he was standing next to Nathan Bedford Forrest, Christie would swear the klan was a pro-Black charitable organization.

So what if he got heated? The man has always been in denial. The closer you get to the truth the angrier he becomes. If you thought Sleepy Time Clarence had some serious self hate going on say hello to Christie.

And why does this featherweight keep getting invited on to spew his self denial delusions? If you’re going to have a right wing no nothing on at least get somebody from the 1st string.

      • Alma98

        Tell it woody!

      • Miranda

I have no idea how he or really, most others, manage to get invited on these panels other than I think all of these people are represented by the same few booking agents and they have a deal to do a rotation. I guess he’s back up.

Its sad but all of these “panels” are really a joke of sorts. There are just a handful of people really studying up and trying to make coherent points and then you have the ones that are only on the panel to be contrarians and provide hyperbole so a “scene” can be clipped for internet viral purposes. Sites like Mediaite were created just the express purpose of promoting this kind of madness. So you have producers who are telling the assistant producers to book a certain number of blowhards so they can create a “scene” and make for “Good TV” as Roland so eloquently stated.

        • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

I think you summed in up in a nutshell. Here to talk about the principles of nuclear fusion are two Pulitzer Prize winning physicists and Ron Christie.

Yeah that’s got “scene” written all over it.

          • Miranda

LOL Precisely! They will always have that somebody on the panel who CLEARLY is just there to scream and holler some crazy lies with absolutely NO expertise on the subject at hand. That is what they consider to be “good tv”.

          • isonprize

I think you summed in up in a nutshell. Here to talk about the principles of nuclear fusion are two Pulitzer Prize winning physicists and Ron Christie.

Un-freaking-believable…North Carolina is trying desperately to become the stupidest state in the union.
    ———————–
North Carolina Home Schools To Get Public School Money
By Stephanie Mencimer Tue Dec. 17, 2013 3:00 AM GMT

In July, the increasingly right-wing legislature in North Carolina passed a bill to divert $10 million from the public school budget to create vouchers that would give low-income students up to $4,200 a year to pay for private school tuition. Such vouchers are a popular conservative proposal for “reforming” failing public schools.

North Carolina’s vouchers, which will become available in 2014, allow public money to go to unregulated private schools that are not required to meet any educational or teacher preparation standards. In addition, thanks to the way the law was written, the money will be available to “home schools”—literally schools set up in someone’s house. Homeschooling traditionally has been done by parents. But the state recently changed its home schooling law to allow people who aren’t parents or legal guardians educate kids in a group setting. The only requirement for such schools is that the teacher have a high school diploma, that the school keep immunization and attendance records on its students, and that it give kids a national standardized test every year.

Pope invites homeless for birthday breakfast
    Tue Dec 17 2013 09:23:04 GMT-0500

Pope Francis invited four homeless people to mass and breakfast in the Vatican on his 77th birthday on Tuesday, which he celebrated with Vatican staff and their families, Vatican radio reported.

The pope hosted the breakfast at St Martha’s Residence, the Vatican hotel where he has stayed since his election, spurning the more grandiose Apostolic Palace where leaders of the CatholicChurch usually live.

The four homeless people were among the dozens who spend every night camped out around St Peter’s Square.

Photos released by the Vatican showed Francis speaking with three homeless man, including one holding a dog.

The Bellflower, California, resident owns and operates Kiddie Depot, a home-based family childcare business. Her son, now 18, was covered by the state-sponsored Healthy Families program. ”I couldn’t afford it. ThinkProgress: Church Leaders Shame Catholic University For Accepting Koch Dollars

A group of 50 Catholic leaders are criticizing the president of the Catholic University of America (CUA) for accepting a $1 million donation from a foundation controlled by Charles Koch, arguing that his ideological agenda is not in line with Catholic theology.

    — -Fla. school named for Ku Klux Klan leader to be renamed

    – -A Florida high school that for 54 years has borne the name of a leader of the Ku Klux Klan is to be renamed, officials said.

The Nathan Bedford Forrest High School in Jacksonville, Fla., where more than half the students are black, will change its name from that of the man who allegedly was the Ku Klux Klan’s first grand wizard from the start of the next school year in August.

A new name will be proposed in January.

“We recognize that we cannot and are not seeking to erase history,”
said Constance Hall, a board member for the Duval County school, which was founded 54 years ago.

“For too long and too many, this name has represented the opposite of unity, respect, and equality,” Hall said in a statement.

Forrest was an innovative calvary leader and a lieutenant general in
the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He later joined the Ku Klux Klan after its founding after war; there remains a dispute over his role.

With its roots in the Civil War era, the Ku Klux Klan has long been associated with hooded, white-robed night riders who menaced blacks with cross burnings, lynchings and other acts of violence.

    • JB20005

Hmmm… 54 years ago. Now what was going on in the south 54 years ago that would make a school district choose an inflammatory figure like Nathan Bedford Forrest as a school’s namesake?

I’m sure it was just a celebration of their southern heritage, and Forrest’s background never entered the equation.

Tea Party Groups Seek Vengeance For Fired Staffer
    By Alex Rogers @arogDCDec. 16, 2013

The Tea Party wants to avenge Paul Teller.

Teller was fired last week from his post as executive director of the Republican Study Committee, a congressional group that steers the right-wing agenda, after allegedly leaking private conversations over the course of years to outside political groups.

“This is personal,” says Brent Bozell, a conservative commentator and chairman of For America. “They are making it personal by attacking people by personally besmirching their integrity. I’m just not going to stand for it. Paul Teller is a good man.”

After Obamacare signup, Marco Rubio defends $10k subsidy some Republicans call “special deal”

Though a staunch Obamacare critic, Sen. Marco Rubio has enrolled his family in one of its health plans and will accept a $10,000 federal subsidy that some fellow Republicans rejected as a “special deal.”

Rubio on Monday defended his decision to receive the annual subsidy and said it wasn’t that special.

“It’s an [employer] contribution,” Rubio said. “It’s available to every employee of the federal government.”

Rubio pointed out that, as a member of Congress, he’s required to enroll in an Affordable Care Act plan if he wants health insurance through his employer, the federal government.

    R. Kelly Responds to ‘Village Voice’ Story About Past Allegations of Sexual Assault
    December 16, 2013 5:15 PM

…When asked about the story, Kelly chose to brush it off. “Well I feel
like I got the football man, I’m running towards the touchdown and
stopping and looking back, mess around, I’ll get tackled,” he explained.

Kelly said he appreciates all of his fans who have been supporting
him since the beginning of his career, but knows it’s on him to stay
strong when stories like this come out. “When you get on top of
anything, it’s very windy,” he said. “It’s about holding your
balance once you get up there…You have to spiritually be a climber.”

The singer squashed the conversation by simply saying those who want to talk bad about him should just listen to the final track on his new album, aptly titled “Shut Up.”

What #GotCovered means for Brian and Dianna: “Relief.”
    October 29, 2013

When Dianna Burke lost her job, she and her husband Brian also lost their health insurance. Although Dianna found new work, it didn’t come with benefits. Since losing their insurance plan, the couple has only been able to obtain coverage through COBRA for the hefty price of more than $1,000 per month — and even that insurance expires at the end of this year.

Millions of families have faced the kind of anxiety that comes with losing access to affordable health insurance. But through the Health Insurance Marketplace, there’s a new way to get covered.

Brian and Dianna were thrilled when they found out how much they would save when they shopped for a plan through their state Marketplace, Covered California. After looking at their options, they chose a health insurance plan that would cost just $127 per month.

Affordable health insurance now available through the Marketplace is helping families across America find quality coverage that fits their needs and their budget. For Brian and Dianna, that will amount to paying about $11,000 less for health insurance next year.

Please keep Trayvon’s family in your prayers. I don’t know how much these people are supposed to endure. It hasn’t been verified, but Zimmerman may be on e-bay selling “artwork.” The bidding is at nearly $100k. Hateful people openly celebrating a lynching, and the media will pretend that there’s nothing wrong with it.

Suge is ignorant. Always has been and someone needs to beat his ass for spewing such nonsense.

But no matter how ignorant Suge is, TMZ needs to be taken to task for posting a poll on their website asking whether Black people should be referred to as “African Americans” or “Niggers”. How would Harvey Levin – who owns the site – like it if someone posted a poll asking whether gay people should be referred to as “Gay” or “F**got”? Or whether Jewish people should be referred to as “Jewish” or “Kikes”?

And it’s an object lesson for the rappers who believe that they’re “reclaiming” the n-word—-not the case at all; they’re licensing racists to use this word with impunity; they’ve reclaimed nothing, but are just tail between the legs nodding to black inferiority.
