Hmm. Obenshade is going to concede @ 3pm today, because Herring is now up about 900 votes over him. Fancy that.

White Folks (TM) demand non-whites accept a white Santa b/c of white supremacy. If a black or Latino Santa is doling out gifts to black/Latino kids, they don’t need White Folks(TM), right? White Folks (TM) need black/Latino dependency. They claim they want black people to stand on their own two feet and do for themselves instead of sucking the welfare teat but you can’t have a system of white supremacy and also have black self-determination. It doesn’t work.

The same people crying about Beyonce singing about Anna Mae & Ike Turner and having sex with JayZ are the same people quiet as a mouse when it comes to Lady Gaga singing Do What You Want With MY Body with R Kelly.

    • conlakappa

It’s reminiscent of when Ellen (?) what’sherface was the R running against Glendenning for governor and claimed there were a lot of ineligible/dead people who voted for him but turns out she had dozens of the dead on her rolls!

Just remembered her name because it was close to Sour Grapes: Sauerbrey! I don’t care enough about her/her name to verify spelling. She looked like Rue McClanahan’s very bitter, right-wing sister.

Hey Mrs. Carter—What About the Gays?
Who runs the world in Beyoncé’s mind? The nuclear family.
    By Matt Capetola

Beyoncé’s new self-titled album is not only a pop masterpiece; it’s also a carefully orchestrated polemic. Every dance move, every outfit, every lyric is carefully curated to articulate a clear message—the Beyoncé feminist manifesto. It says, among other things, that it is okay to be imperfect, that it is okay to be ridiculously sexy and have ridiculously sexy sex, and that it is okay to command power as a woman and as a person of color.

It dawned on me, though, after I drooled over the album’s 17 videos for about the fourth time, that it featured not a single unambiguous nod to LGBTQ rights. The “Haunted” video seems to present “queers”—that is, people different from a “normal” nuclear family of mannequins by virtue of their race, class, gender, age, etc. But even as Beyoncé glances at this queer world, it’s unclear whether it’s being substantively engaged and celebrated or just voyeuristically depicted as a freakshow. Considering the gravity of the issues this album does unambiguously address, I cannot help but feel slapped in the face by the paucity—no, the patent absence—of explicitly homosexual characters. With every cut-to in which attractive heterosexual couples make out, I increasingly wonder why Beyoncé’s most die-hard constituency has been left out. Not one gay kiss. Not one. That appears to me to be no accident, but rather an act of willed exclusion.

I swear that too many people in this country always have to complain and turn something small into a larger issue.

      • gn

It’s been really bad, from all directions, in terms of this rollout. I expected stans and non-stans to go to war over this album but it’s been absolutely ridiculous. Back to ignoring.

    • gn

lol, she’s not Jesus, she’s not POTUS, she’s not the Pope. She’s a very talented singer and dancer with a good album which is IMO too raunchy for kids. The hype is getting past crazy at this point.

    • Alma98

Why do people always put their burdens on black folks?
Why do we have to do everything for someone else an nobody gives 2 shits about us huh? I’m tired of people always trying to make us feel bad for not doing something for them. It’s a damn album not some political statement!

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

So now she doesn’t really like gay people because she didn’t have a gay kiss in her videos????

IMO don’t try too hard, and just let it flow. Sometimes but not always, getting something you really want doesn’t necessarily depend on pushing. Sometimes it’s just about wanting that something a lot and envisioning yourself having it. How do you know that you haven’t already painted the picture which *WILL* hang in a show in 2014? Enjoy yourself; it will come. I could be wrong though (frequently am).

Lawmaker on African trip: Cruz ‘was on the spot’
    By Peter Sullivan

Many members of the Congressional Black Caucus were curious why Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) decided to join them on a 20-hour flight to South Africa, but Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.) said today that she thinks the time together was productive.

Cruz was the only senator, and one of two Republicans, to join the 22-member congressional delegation to Nelson Mandela’s memorial service last week. Moore noted today on MSNBC’s “Jansing & Co.” that many of the other members, such as Reps. John Lewis (D-Ga.) and Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), had personal connections to the issues from working against apartheid.

“He was on the spot because there were many members who were curious about why he would want to take this pilgrimage,” Moore said.

But she also said there were benefits to having him on the trip. ObamaCare was a particular focus of the discussions. “He sort of stuck to his guns about it, but I do think we were able to break through some of the talking points and really challenge them,” Moore said.

TLC’s ‘Little Couple’ Dr. Jennifer Arnold battling rare cancer in uterus

HOUSTON (KTRK) — A renowned Texas Children’s doctor is now receiving treatment at the same hospital where she made a name for herself.

Dr. Jennifer Arnold has been known for her work with critically ill babies in spite of having skeletal dysplasia, a form of dwarfism.

She and her husband, Bill Klein, have struggled to have children and that has been chronicled on the TLC show “The Little Couple.” And this year she became pregnant. But in a cruel twist, the pregnancy turned into a rare but aggressive type of cancer of the uterus.

“The cells were abnormal to begin with, never developed into the placenta, and in fact, became a tumor,” Baylor gynecologist oncologist Dr. Concepcion Diaz-Arrastia said.

Her newest fight, which is on the cover of this week’s “People” magazine, is to survive.

Pleasantville suspends cop tied to racist Obama Facebook rant
    Dec. 17, 2013 | 89 Comments

PLEASANTVILLE — In another social media-driven debacle, a village police officer has been suspended and could be fired after he apparently posted a racist, obscenity-laced rant about President Barack Obama on his Facebook page.

“The fact that he (Obama) is still alive bewilders me,” Officer Peter Burns is alleged to have written in the post, obtained by The Journal News on Thursday. “Go die in a shallow grave you Muslim commie …”

The post, apparently written Dec. 11 on a Facebook profile page Burns operated under the name “Coon Trapper,” contained a racial slur, made reference to “1st amendment NSA” and described Obama as “un-American.”

After being shown an image of the vulgar diatribe late Monday afternoon, Pleasantville Police Chief Richard Love told the newspaper he was unaware of the post but would take immediate action. On Tuesday, Love announced that Burns has been relieved of his duties and placed on paid administrative leave.

“Paid administrative leave huh?” Well that’ll sure teach him a lesson he won’t soon forget…until the next time it happens.

Morons. We see you! Why even bother pretending that “taking immediate action” actually means something. The only thing that happens is they get desk duty and/or a short vacay with pay.

Oh, Pleasantville New York. I had to click on the link because there’s a Pleasantville, New Jersey (thisclose to Atlantic City), and I was thinking to myself how can an officer on a predominately Black police force in a predominantly Black town post those comments still be breathing, much less still have a job.

House GOPer Immediately Contradicts Himself While Explaining Obamacare Alternative (VIDEO)

    DYLAN SCOTT – DECEMBER 18, 2013, 2:25 PM EST2626

Asked to explain a Republican alternative to Obamacare in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday, Rep. Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) managed to contradict himself within a span of about 90 seconds.

Wenstrup began by describing the House Republican Study Committee’s bill, which he co-sponsored. That bill would give people tax deductions to purchase health insurance on their own rather than relying on employer-provider coverage, which accounts for the largest share of the market (48 percent). It also lacks support from House GOP leadership, which hasn’t allowed it to come to a vote.

“We would like individuals to be able to get a tax deduction by purchasing insurance on their own,” Wenstrup said. “That way it gives them much more portability. They can go from job to job and keep their insurance.”

But less than two minutes later, as Wenstrup was attempting to explain how Republicans would provide care to those with pre-existing conditions, he seemed to re-endorse the employer-based system. He blamed Obamacare for keeping people out of jobs and therefore accessing employer-sponsored coverage — the very kind he had just boasted the GOP plan would free Americans from.

“The other thing that would really help us along the way is if we would do things within the economy that got people into jobs that had insurance,” he said. “There’s no greater social reform than having a job, but unfortunately within Obamacare, it’s doing a lot of things that take people away from their jobs or into part-time roles.”

    CATHERINE THOMPSON – DECEMBER 18, 2013, 1:42 PM

Residents of Deer Trail, Colo. may soon be able to obtain permits allowing them to shoot drone aircraft out of the sky.

A judge ruled Tuesday that a petition drive to put a proposal to issue drone-hunting permits to a vote was legal, Denver TV station KUSA reported, setting the stage for a special election to decide the issue.

The small town has only 320 registered voters, according to KUSA. Only 19 signatures were needed to trigger the special election.

McCain Introduces Obamacare Repeal And Replacement Legislation

    DYLAN SCOTT – DECEMBER 18, 2013, 3:45 PM EST

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Wednesday that he would introduce a bill to repeal Obamacare and replace it with his own set of reforms.

It appears to be the first comprehensive health care reform legislation that McCain has introduced during his three decades in Congress. It is composed of conservative pet policies, such as tax credits for individuals and tort reform to stem medical malpractice lawsuits. The bill comes as Republicans attempt to beat back criticism that they don’t have a viable alternative to the Affordable Care Act.

McCain boasted that Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of the conservative American Action Forum and the chief economic advisor to his 2008 presidential campaign, had concluded that the bill would save taxpayers $2.37 trillion in its first decade.

    Congress approves bipartisan budget

Senators voted 64-36 to approve a bipartisan budget agreement Wednesday afternoon and Obama is expected to sign the bill before departing this weekend for his Christmas vacation in Hawaii.

Approval of the measure comes about four weeks before a Jan. 15 deadline but does not erase the threat of a government shutdown. The budget agreement merely sets the parameters of federal spending levels; it leaves work on the details up to the House and Senate appropriations committees.

    Good afternoon POU.

Under Stop-And-Frisk Reform, Cop Who Jailed Man For ‘Sarcasm’ And A Cigar Will Be Prosecuted

Real estate broker Yahnick Martin was smoking a cigar on a Prospect Heights corner when police stopped to ask if he had marijuana. He said he didn’t, and he even blew out smoke to show the officers. But Officer Roman Goris proceeded to frisk him anyway,[....] Goris found nothing more than a lighter and Martin’s wallet, and he started to walk away.

But Martin, a black man in a city where police made more stops of young black men than their total population, wasn’t having it. He told Goris he had no right to stop and frisk him, and asked for his badge number. For that, and for making a joke about the hundred dollars he had in his pocket, he was issued two disorderly conduct summonses, arrested, and taken to the precinct. One of the officers told Martin, “You want to be a smart ass and make accusations, you go to jail.”

Officer Gorris is now one of the first officers who will be prosecuted for a wrongful stop-and-frisk under reform that empowers the City’s Civilian Complaint Review Board to prosecute administrative trials and dispense discipline.[....]

I’ve never heard him disparage black women, or compare black women to others unfavorably, etc. I love him (& couldn’t care less who he chooses to date)—anyone else hear anything about him being a self-hater? Would be so disappointing if so! He just seems positive and goofy.

NYC’s largest solar facility coming to former Staten Island dump

Staten Island will be home to New York City’s largest solar
installation — a 10-megawatt power plant that, when completed, will have the capacity to produce enough juice to power in the ballpark of 2,000 homes. More specifically, the facility will be located on what used to be the largest landfill in the entire world before New York City started to export its insane amount of garbage to other states (thanks a bunch Virginia, Ohio and Pennsylvania!) in 2001[....]

Scheduled to break ground in 2015 and be up and running at some point the following year provided that there are no setbacks, it’s estimated that the plant will more than double the city’s solar
    production.[....]

How The World Plans To Destroy Syria’s Chemical Weapons

The world body charged with organizing the destruction of Syria’s
chemical weapons has finalized the plan on how to rid the civil war-torn country of its deadly arsenal, announcing on Tuesday its compressed timeline to have them out of Syria by the end of the year.[....]

An ambition timeline, as presented by Uzmucu, calls for all of the chemicals that inspectors had previously disabled would be shipped out Syria by December 31, with their destruction completed before April 2014. The actual destruction of the deadliest of the chemical agencies will be carried out aboard a special ship the United States has deployed to neutralize priority chemicals while at sea.[....]

    Singing may ease COPD symptoms

[....] Globally, about 64 million people suffer from COPD, according to a new report from the BBC. COPD is a lifelong condition that is caused by damage to the air sacs and passages that make up the lungs. For those affected by the disease, every breath is a challenge. The World Health Organization expects COPD to be the third leading cause of death by 2030.[....]

Researchers think the act of singing helped COPD patients inhale
without anxiety, taking deeper breaths and clearing the lungs more
efficiently than they would if they were simply concentrating on their
breathing and taking short “gaspy” breaths. Singing allows patients to
breathe in a deeper and more relaxed manner.[....]

A Dearborn Heights judge is holding a hearing to determine if there’s enough evidence to send Theodore Wafer to trial on a second-degree murder charge. Defense attorneys claim he feared for his life, but prosecutors say the shooting was not justified.

Dems want briefing on Issa Obamacare docs

    Dec 16, 2013

The White House and senior congressional Democrats on Monday said congressional leaders should seek an “immediate classified briefing” on ObamaCare documents subpoenaed by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.).

The Democrats argue in a letter to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) that the two leaders should intervene in Issa’s investigation.

They also accuse Issa of being reckless with sensitive information that ObamaCare contractors handed to him last week under the threat of a subpoena.

“We do not believe these sensitive documents should have been provided to the Committee without adequate protocols to safeguard their contents,” the Democrats wrote in their letter “But now that they have, we have an obligation to understand the harm that would be caused if these documents were disclosed.”

“It is reckless in the extreme for Chairman Issa or any member to possess these documents without a full understanding of the extremely sensitive information they contain and the widespread damage that could be caused if they got into the wrong hands,” they added.

The letter was signed by Reps. Elijah Cummings (Md.), Henry Waxman (Ca.), Adam Smith (Wa.), Bennie Thompson (Miss.), Dutch Ruppersberger (D-Md.), George Miller (Ca.), and Sander Levin (Mich.). They are the top Democrats on seven separate committees.

The conservative contempt for the working person shows through
    December 18, 2013, 3:49 p.m.

At a hearing Wednesday of the Senate Finance Commmittee’s Subcommittee on Social Security, conservative scholar Andrew G. Biggs made the following remark in defense of the idea that retirement ages can safely be raised:

“Go back to 1950, when we had a highly industrialized economy. You had coal miners, and farmers, and factory workers. The average age of initial Social Security claiming then was 68. Today, when your biggest on the job risk is, you know, carpal tunnel syndrome from your mouse or something like that, it’s 63. …[T]he idea that we can’t have a higher retirement age, I think it just flies in the face of the fact that people did, in fact, retire later in the past, and today’s jobs are less physically demanding than they were in the past.”

A couple of things about this. First, carpal tunnel syndrome, which Biggs seems to think is a big joke and an excuse for malingering, is no laughing matter to people who have it and for whom it can be a crippling condition.

Second, the idea that older workers typically hold down office jobs or other comfy sinecures is fatuous and flatly untrue. The Center for Economic and Policy Research actually examined the numbers, mostly from the U.S. Census Bureau. (Unlike, apparently, Biggs.)

What it found in 2010 was that 6.5 million workers, or 35% of those 58 and older, were employed in physically demanding jobs. This was defined as work requiring “handling and moving objects, spending significant time standing, or having any physically demanding work.” Working conditions included “cramped workspace, labor outdoors, or exposure to abnormal temperatures, contaminants, hazardous equipment, or distracting or uncomfortable noise.”

These are conditions you’re not likely to encounter in a Senate committee room, unless you consider hot air to be an environmental menace.

Latino and black workers were overrepresented among older workers with these jobs.

“On the event with the moms, in the Oval Office,” Karl began, “you said ‘because moms play a unique role, moms have a unique role to play.’ I mean, are you… is there a little gender stereo…”

“Do you do what your mom tells you to?” Carney interrupted. “I do, mostly.”

“Absolutely,” Karl replied, adding “What’s up with dads? I mean, you’re a dad, do you have a role to play?”

“I wish I had that kind of power and influence over my children,” Carney joked, “but I don’t.”

    – - – -Up to half the terror suspects held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay could be closer to heading home under a bipartisan deal reached in Congress that gives President Barack Obama a rare victory in his fight to close the prison.

The deal would lift the most rigid restrictions Congress previously imposed on detainee transfers overseas and is part of a broad compromise defense bill awaiting final passage in the Senate this week. The House approved the measure last Thursday.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin said the compromise could have a dramatic impact on the 160 detainees still being held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“About half of the detainees would be detainees that could be transferred to their third-world countries from which they come,” Levin told reporters. “About half of the detainees would remain in Guantanamo because of the prohibition on transferring
them to the United States for detention and for trial.”

The defense bill marks the first time since Obama came to office promising to close Guantanamo that Congress is moving to ease restrictions instead of strengthen them. And it could signal changing political views toward the prison for terrorism suspects now that the war in Afghanistan is winding down.

Tristan Walker’s Next Act: Building a Procter & Gamble for People of Color- –
    – – –In his first few months as an entrepreneur in residence at Andreessen Horowitz, Tristan Walker dreamed big when it came to startup ideas. There were the seeds he planted for a new kind of bank. There was the idea for a venture aimed at tackling childhood obesity.
But, then, Walker decided his best bet was to found a company that was more “authentic” to him and his experiences. What he came up with was Walker & Company Brands, a next-generation Procter & Gamble with a straightforward, if ambitious, mission: To make health and beauty simple for people of color.

That’s what he told me in an interview on Sunday night about his new company, which has raised $2.4 million led by Los Angeles-based Upfront Ventures, with backing from Andreessen Horowitz, SV Angel, CollaborativeFund, Sherpa Ventures and the William Morris agency’s Charles King.

Prior to Andreessen Horowitz, Walker ran business development at
Foursquare, where he worked for nearly three years. On the surface, at least, the switch from a social-networking site to a consumer product goods company doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

But when you hear Walker talk about his reason for creating Bevel, a $29.95-a-month shaving kit that is the first brand launching under the Walker & Company umbrella and accepting preorders today, you can understand his motivation.
Here’s an edited version of our conversation.

    – –A grandmother from Georgia who bought a last-minute lottery ticket has been revealed as one of the two winners sharing a $648 million Mega Millions jackpot.
Georgia Lottery officials revealed on Wednesday afternoon that Ira Curry, 56, from Stone Mountain near Atlanta, won $173 million. The other winner in California has still not claimed their winnings.

Mrs Curry, an underwriting manager for an insurance firm, bought just one ticket – a last-minute decision – from a newsstand in her office building and played a combination of family birthdays and her family’s lucky number, seven.

She only realized she could be the winner when, while driving this morning, she heard the radio DJ say a person in Georgia had won, and that the Mega Ball was number seven.
