Federal Reserve announces unprecedented steps to bolster the economy Wednesday

The Federal Reserve announced Wednesday that it will take
unprecedented steps to bolster the economy, saying it will continue to
stimulate growth unless the unemployment rate falls to 6.5 percent or the
    inflation rate reaches 2.5 percent.

It was a historic move that for the first time explicitly spells out the Fed’s goals for the economy
and how it will respond to changing economic conditions. The Fed says
it will also begin purchasing $45 billion in Treasury bonds a month,
on top of $40 billion a month it is already buying in mortgage bonds.

The statement amounts to a major new commitment to reducing
unemployment but also shows that Fed officials remain concerned about
the long-term prospects for the U.S. economy.

Great news! Clear commitment to full employment (3-5% range) vs. the GOP crap about the “Natural Rate of Employment” or even worse, dropping the dual mandate to only keeping inflation down.

Kenya Moore Responds to ‘Fake Relationship’ Rumors, Calls Walter ‘Hateful’

You didn’t think the former Miss USA herself was going down without a fight in the current battle brewing between her and her TV flame Walter Jackson.

Jackson this week aired the truth behind he and Kenya’s romance, claiming on a local Atlanta radio station that it was a “fake relationship” designed by Kenya just for TV.

Moore released an official statement denying the claim, it reads:
“The truth is and has always been that I want to be in a loving, honest, long-term relationship with someone who genuinely loves me for me — Walter’s recent statements are completely false. I am embarrassed that I allowed a deceitful and hateful person in my life.

    – – – – –President Obama has so convincingly won the message war on taxes that according to new Bloomberg poll, nearly half of Republicans support raising taxes on the wealthy.

The Bloomberg poll found that Obama’s job approval rating (53%) is now at its highest level since December 2009. Two to one majorities support the president’s position on protecting Medicare and Social Security. This result pretty much obliterates the Republican talking point that the Romney/Ryan campaign gave Republicans some sort of victory on entitlements.

    – — SNIP – – — –
–President Obama has been delivering the simple, clear, and consistent message that the top earners are paying too little in taxes. Mitt Romney tried to campaign on protecting the “job creators,” and was routed. John Boehner did more damage to his own party yesterday by again refusing to raise taxes on the rich.

Obama has so thoroughly won the message war on taxes that if this fiscal cliff dispute lingers for a few more weeks, he might even have a majority of Republicans on his side.

    – – -The Bloomberg poll raises the question exactly who are the congressional Republicans representing with their position on taxes? They aren’t representing the majority of the American people. They aren’t representing small business owners as they like to claim. It seems that the only people they are representing are conservative millionaires and billionaires and right wing tax zealots like Grover Norquist.

TPM: As Michigan Republicans pushed their controversial right to work legislation another step forward Tuesday, organized labor’s promise not to go quietly was realized.

…. labor groups say they’ve found a way to unwind the Michigan Republicans’ attempt to write the law in a way that makes it impossible to be overturned at the ballot box …. A high-ranking labor source told TPM unions are ready to turn Michigan into the next Ohio.

“If this bill is signed today, it will be Thunderdome for Governor Snyder and Michigan for the next two years,” the official said. “There are multiple options for a referendum, for the voters to have their say on this issue and all options are on the table, the fight is far from over.”

    Delusions of Wisdom

Both Jonathan Chait and Charles Pierce have a field day with a Politico piece titled, without a hint of irony, Crafting a boom economy. In said piece they talk to various Very Serious People, and divine the insider consensus on What Must Be Done — which mainly seems to involve, naturally, cutting Social Security and Medicare while reducing corporate tax rates.

What I find remarkable about this piece is that after everything that has happened these past five years or so, Jim VandeHei and Mike Allen still take it for granted that these people actually know what they’re talking about; the whole premise of the article is that the insiders really do have the key, not just to good policy, but to achieving a dramatic rise in the growth rate.

The whole theme of the Politico piece is that great things would happen if only the insiders could override all this messy democracy stuff. But the real lesson is that those insiders are not only self-dealing, but profoundly ignorant and wrong-headed. It’s too bad that so many journalists still can’t see that.

Looks like we’re stuck with GOP game playing on debt limit
Posted by Jamelle Bouie on December 12, 2012 at 11:26 am

Over the last 24 hours, the White House and House Speaker John Boehner have traded proposals on the fiscal cliff. The most recent one from Obama involves $1.4 trillion in revenue — down from the original $1.6 trillion — and $200 billion more in spending cuts, bringing the total to $600 billion.

What hasn’t changed, however, is the administration’s original offer on the debt ceiling.

The mechanism proposed by the president requires him to notify Congress that he needs an increase in the debt limit. The increase wouldn’t need Congressional passage, but Congress could vote to disapprove, which the president could then veto. The country continues to pay its debts, opponents can vote against it, and everyone walks away satisfied.

Republicans immediately rejected this proposal, despite the fact that it was crafted, originally, by Mitch McConnell. Instead, GOP leaders insist on making the mistakes of last year, and using the debt ceiling as leverage for further spending cuts. CNN reports, for example, that John Boehner has not budged on the debt ceiling, saying that any increase must be matched by equivalent spending cuts. His allies in the Senate agree. Says Lindsey Graham of Obama’s proposal: “That’s going nowhere. He’s not king. He’s president.”

SMH…….really Jemele? You just had to write this huh? really?

Wozniacki’s impersonation of Serena wasn’t racist
    By Jemele Hill

    • Jemele writes:

But the curves are something that many black women embrace. In a recent survey conducted by the Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation, 66 percent of black women identified as obese by the government standard had high self-esteem compared to just 41 percent of average-sized or thin white women.

      Black women love their curves.

Who cares if someone makes fun of them?

Well, guess what Jemele? Black people…we love our Black skin. We embrace our full lips.

But if a white person paints their face black and their lips pink to make fun of us, it won’t end well.

      • Ebogan63

Who cares if someone makes fun of them?

If it was mean-spirited, as was the case with this, yeah I happen to care

        • GN

Exactly; and there’s a big difference between not letting haters get under one’s skin versus trying to repackage haterism and gross disrespect as somehow okay. I don’t care if it wasn’t mean-spirited. The habitual line-stepping and disrespect that has been rampant is going to get called out.

          • BoomerGal

What’s odd to me is that Serena didn’t take offense to it and that chick is her friend (so says the media)! I’m quite surprised, if that’s true.

The animosity and sheer level of stupidity that’s being directed towards black women is really working on my last nerve, as can seen by the fact that I’m cussing a bit more than usual. Who Will Play Mitt Romney? HBO Planning ‘Game Change’ Sequel ‘Double Down’ About 2012 Election

Jay Roach and Danny Strong have found their niche at HBO with political dramas. The director and writer first paired on “Recount” about the hotly contested 2000 election, and they followed it up this year with “Game Change,” which focused on the McCain/Palin ticket of 2008. And while they aren’t officially signed yet, you can imagine that the network will be giving their agents a ring as they develop “Double Down,” a film about this year’s election.

Authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann, who penned “Game Change,” are hard at work on the follow-up book optioned by HBO, but you might wondering, where’s the drama in this year’s race? There was no Palin-esque figure around which to pivot a narrative, but for those that followed closely, there was plenty going on behind the scenes. Politico in particular did a great job of dissecting the Romney campaign, the internal strife and the failure to capitalize on winning the first debate. Those articles are both great reads, and they really examine how gradually it all fell apart for the Republican nominee.

But of course, the big question is who will play Romney. If you saw “Game Change” you’ll know Barack Obama was kept off camera, so we’d guess the same approach will be used here. Any suggestions? [THR]

    • rikyrah

no…the person playing Willard has to be able to do human oil slick.

      I’ll think about it.

    • qosine

Tom Hanks could play him. He could do the pained smile, the awkward singing, the rude greetings (7 eleven cookies), being led off stage by Ann, the callous dismissal of the 47% . . . oh yeah.

    • Rhoda

Josh Brolin. He’s got the good looks and can be cold and terrifying IMO.

      • rikyrah

YOU are on the money. Josh can play oil slick

      • qosine

Josh Brolin would be great. Yes.

      • BoomerGal

Problem is, Romney doesn’t have the “good looks.”

        • Town

Romney is not actually a bad looking man.* It’s just that he is so manufactured, like a Ken Doll or something out of Central Casting. The hair, sprayed perfectly in place and dyed just so…in an ombre effect graduating from black down to white at the sideburns and nape.

The perfectly tailored clothing. The stiff speech. Nothing out of place.

That’s why it was so shocking to many to see that photo of Romney looking rumpled and disheveled pumping gas at the station, hair going every which a way, clothing wrinkled and messy. Even at the Pacquiao fight he had dark circles under his eyes and limp hair.

Whoever plays Romney must capture that Central Casting Mr. Perfect image. It’s essential to the Romney character.

*Ann Romney is not a bad looking lady either, she’s actually quite attractive. However her styling, sneers and constant bitchface made her unattractive. And while Mitt & Ann might look halfway decent, their kids…o_0

          • creolechild

            And nothing to get hungabout

Living is easy with eyes closed
            Misunderstanding all you see
It’s getting hard to be someone
            But it all works out
It doesn’t matter much to me
            Let me take you down
‘cos I’m going to Strawberry Fields
            Nothing is real
            And nothing to get hungabout
            Strawberry Fields forever

No one I think is in my tree[Is it the right height, Mitt?]
I mean it must be high or low
That is you can’t you know tune in
            But it’s all right
That is I think it’s not too bad
            Let me take you down
‘cos I’m going to Strawberry Fields
            Nothing is real
            And nothing to get hungabout
            Strawberry Fields forever

          • rikyrah

            Miranda Richardson as Ann Romney.

          • rikyrah

            Town is right.

Willard is out of central casting.

Oil slick doesn’t really cover him.

Too chisled to be true with an underlying vibe of sociopath – that’s Willard.

Think Don Draper with 10 years on him.

I’m trying to think of an actor in that age range: Jon Hamm is 10 years too young to play Willard.

          • conlakappa

Hamm is a pretty good actor though–he has credibly done James Mason impersonation as well as a female med tech from the islands. All he would need is good makeup and I think he would nail. Heck, Ed Harris played The Mack Daddy and he is way younger. The only reason I don’t want Hamm to do it is because Mittens wants to be thought of as Don and Miss Ann wants to be Betty. I want her to be played by someone more in her cohort–Judith Light, maybe.

  • More on Rhonda Lee’s firing from KTBS:

Randy Bain, KTBS news director, pointed to a memo emailed to staff members on Aug. 30. Lee told Journal-isms Wednesday, however, that the memo referred to viewer complaints, and she viewed the Facebook message as a comment, not a complaint. In any case, Lee said, while she does not deny its existence, “That’s the first I’m hearing of this memo.”

Bain issued the following late Tuesday:

“Typically this station does not comment on personnel matters, but due to the publicity and interest about this issue, the station has included the following statement.

“On November 28, 2012, KTBS dismissed two employees for repeated violation of the station’s written procedure. We can confirm that Rhonda Lee was one of the employees. Another employee was a white male reporter who was an eight year veteran of the station. The policy they violated provided a specific procedure for responding to viewer comments on the official KTBS Facebook page. Included is an email that was sent to all news department employees informing them of this procedure. This procedure is based on advice from national experts and commonly used by national broadcast and cable networks and local television stations across the country.

“Unfortunately, television personalities have long been subject to harsh criticism and negative viewer comments about their appearance and performance. If harsh viewer comments are posted on the station’s official website, there is a specific procedure to follow.

“Ms. Rhonda Lee was let go for repeatedly violating that procedure and after being warned multiple times of the consequences if her behavior continued. Rhonda Lee was not dismissed for her appearance or defending her appearance. She was fired for continuing to violate company procedure.”

Obama’s pollster: Republicans have a tolerance problem
Obama’s campaign pollster, Joel Benenson, says the Republican challenge goes beyond the Latino vote, extending to anyone who isn’t white and thinks differently from party orthodoxy.

But to Joel Benenson, Mr. Obama’s campaign pollster, the GOP’s problem is bigger than Latinos and immigration.

“The Republican Party has a tolerance problem,” Mr. Benenson told reporters Wednesday at a session hosted by Third Way, a centrist Democratic group. “I think when you define people who look differently than you as illegal aliens, and use that term over and over again, and talk about self-deporting them, that’s a tolerance issue.”

The “looking different” issue, Benenson adds, also helps explain why Asian-Americans voted for Mr. Obama over Mr. Romney by an even wider margin than Latinos, 76 percent to 23 percent. He suggests that the Obama campaign’s message on investment – in education, in building a future through hard work –also won Asian-American votes.

But the tolerance issue, he says, goes beyond race and ethnicity – it goes to issues.
“When you call people who believe in global warming ‘job-killers,’ you have a tolerance problem,” Benenson says.

Karl Rove’s New Obama Ad Trumpets ‘Us Vs. Them’

In a new ad, “Over,” launched by the Karl Rove-backed Crossroads GPS super PAC, the narrator declares to President Barack Obama, “The time for politics has ended.” A political strategist is using his political action committee to stress that now is not the time for politics. Isn’t that something? Why don’t I go to Popeye’s, order myself a six-piece crispy strips meal with cajun fries, then walk around screaming, “Eat healthy!!!”

The initial buy for the “Over” ad is reportedly $500,000, with it reportedly airing on various cable stations across the country, plus the local market in Washington, D.C., this weekend. In a statement about the ad, Crossroads GPS President and CEO Steven Law claims:

The White House has shown it is not serious about the debt, as it has yet to propose significant spending cuts to go along with its massive proposed tax hikes. Serious revenue concessions have been made, but Obama won’t take yes for an answer.

If Mr. Jones wants to speculate about future generations, I think that they’ll wonder why the lefty media was so ineffective with respect to challenging far right propaganda and made the ultra-stupid mistake of simply co-signing dishonesty and sensationalism as supposedly legitimately techniques for activism. And the smartest amongst them will realize that the left was immeasurably weakened by the agendas of media whores and careerists.

LIKE! I don’t have a working “like button” so I have to do it this way.

Also something that no one is talking about too much, except the Repugs who tried to block it, is the greening of the military. Bases are going solar & wind big time & the Navy is working at extracting fuel from algae. This is all PBO’s vision & doing.

The military is a big energy consumer & I have read that they have reduced consumption by as much as 30% & expect to do even more in the next few years.

And more…I read that our next generation of space shuttle will use solar power to reduce fuel & keep it in orbit for over a year.

      That’s green science, bebe!

      • GN

Great comment, AG! The knowledge you just dropped is the type of info which isn’t discussed enough and would be all over a non-dysfunctional lefty media’s airwaves.

        • Aquagranny911

          Just a tid bit more…

Shortly after PBO took office, one thing he told DOD was “reduce energy consumption”

No matter how you feel about our military, once they are given a mission, they go for it! Along with every thing else they have to do, reducing energy use has been a big deal. Bases have actually been competing to see how than can green their energy use.

          I so love my Prez!

Re-posting this article from a while back that covers another aspect of PBO’s vision for green energy and environmental policies.

President Obama and the forgotten urban agenda

[….] The thumbnail version is this: Under President Obama, key federal agencies have begun to shift away from subsidizing suburban sprawl and toward reviving cities and creating dense, walkable, transit-friendly communities. Obama has put smart-growthers and new urbanists in key positions, begun to realign government agencies to prioritize sustainability, and launched partnerships and initiatives that one Bush administration veteran calls “mind blowing” — in a good way. Even Obama’s allies agree, however, that serious reform may have to wait for a second term.[….]

Obama’s most farsighted effort — and the one that best illustrates what he’s up against — is the Sustainable Communities Initiative, which brings together the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to decide where government development dollars are best spent. How sensible, you’re thinking — let’s get the people who build the roads (or train lines or bike lanes) together with those that oversee housing and development policy, and toss in the people charged with making sure that we don’t create a mess of the environment in the process. But this wasn’t happening before.[….]

This is SO great. My town is working on a blueways-greenways-bikeways project. Of course, last year, the tea partiers raised
hell at the Planning Committee meetings about Agenda 21. Sigh

      • Aquagranny911

One of the best things Ken Salazar did for Colorado back in the day was the “green spaces/open spaces concept” for new communities & even in urban areas of Denver that were undergoing renewal. There’s hardly anywhere even in the city that doesn’t have a space nearby where you can walk & enjoy the outdoors.

And just a btw, but CO has one of the lowest obesity rates in the US.

        • qosine

That sounds wonderful, AG. People look at you like you’re homeless if you walk and write articles in the paper complaining about bike riders. (eye roll).

My neighbor and I have been walking 2-4 days a week for the past 4 years; fortunately we have great walking areas in the subdivisions behind our respective homes.

          • Aquagranny911

LOL! That reminds me of when I lived in Mississippi in a small town & would walk around. People did look at me funny until they got used to me.

I’ve always been a great walker. I really enjoy it. I swear walking saved me from going completely loco when my Mama died. Whenever the grief got to be just too much I would walk. It helped me.

It’s a willful show of disrespect. When someone mispronounces a name on purpose, or refers to another as something other than an acceptable variation of their given name, then it is done to show disrespect. And it’s so juvenile, but I guess they think they’ really doing something and sticking it to the “libs.” That’s why you see their gleam in their eyes and hear the hostility in their voices (not to mention the phlegm in their throats) whenever they get a chance to say “The Democrat Party.”

        • qosine

I remember when Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), when talking to the President of the United States of America, referred to “The Democrat Party.” I wanted to slap her out of the room.

Stupid Right-Wing Tweets: Ron Christie Edition

[….] Atrios was right the other day — wingers have a rage addiction. So here we have Dick Cheney’s cabana boy outraged that Inauguration Day falls on a Sunday this year. That means Obama is being sworn in on January 20th, in a private ceremony, and they’ll be a public ceremony on the 21st. Just like Eisenhower did it.

The 20th Amendment to the Constitution set January 20th as the official inaugural date. Because January 20, 1957 fell on a Sunday, President Eisenhower took the oath of office for his second term in a private White House ceremony. But to be fair to Christie, Eisenhower was a Republican, which obviously makes all the difference.

Anti-Obama Film Denied Academy Consideration – Conspiracy Blamed

When Dinesh D’Souza’s anti-Obama crap fest, 2016 Obama’s America, hit theaters earlier this year, rabid Republicans heralded it as the much-anticipated holy grail of truth about their favorite Kenyan born Muslim President. Passed around in tea party circles and playing nationally in theaters for almost a whole day, the film enjoyed a small but loyal following made up almost entirely of Fox News viewers. Soon after Fox quit talking about it, the film vanished from sight, till today.

Much as the fall brings autumn leaves and snow (at least here in the north), it also brings awards season and those in the film community begin jockeying for consideration for the Granddaddy of all awards, The Academy Award. Since D’Souza’s 2016 took in a whopping $33.4 million dollars during its entire theatrical run, a figure that most films can take almost a whole week to accumulate, the decision was made to ship it out to the Academy for consideration.

It was denied; the cause? You guessed it, liberal conspiracy.[….]

Mitchell: Group works to bring attention to Ald. Jackson’s alleged neglect of ward

      marym@suntimes.com December 12, 2012 6:52PM

Ald. Sandi Jackson (7th) has got to go.

That’s the goal of a group that is fed up with crime and mayhem in the ward

On Wednesday, Jackson squashed reports that she is contemplating resigning even though she spends much of her time in Washington, D.C.

“I am not resigning. I am here. I am working,” Jackson told reporters. I intend to finish my term unless something catastrophic happens.”

But some constituents are no longer willing to settle for a commuter alderman.

A group of South Shore residents have launched the #SackSandi campaign to focus attention on Jackson’s alleged neglect of the ward.

“If we are quiet, Jackson will think she can do anything,” said Mia Henry, an eight-year ward resident who is leading the effort. “This shouldn’t even be allowable. We have to put her on notice. A lot of people would like to see change.”

Henry said she doesn’t want to run for office. What she wants is “responsible and accountable” leadership in South Shore.

    – – – —GOP pollster Whit Ayres and the Hispanic Leadership Network’s Jennifer Korn released a strategy memo saying that Republicans risk becoming a “regional party” if they don’t increase support among Hispanic voters.

“Mitt Romney won a landslide among white voters, defeating Barack Obama by 59 to 39 percent. In the process he won every large segment of white voters, often by double-digit margins: white men, white women, white Catholics, white Protestants, white old people, white young people. Yet that was not enough to craft a national majority. Republicans have run out of persuadable white voters. For the fifth time in the past six presidential elections, Republicans lost the popular vote. Trying to win a national election by gaining a larger and larger share of a smaller and smaller portion of the electorate is a losing political proposition.”

The toys were collected from residents of the White House, including President Obama and the first couple’s daughters Sasha and Malia, in addition to employees, friends and corporate donors.

“I’m very proud that the folks at the White House stepped up, and I think we have a larger contribution this year than even before,” the first lady said at the Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling surrounded by Marines and volunteers. “And I brought as many as I could here with me today, but we’re going to keep the drive going and keep sending it over.”

Toys for Tots was started by a Marine Corp reservist to gather and distribute gifts for children whose parents could not afford to provide them. What’s actually on the table

Do you remember what many progressives did during the negotiations over health care reform? They focused all their attention on the public option while not noticing things like the Medical Loss Ratios (that limited what insurance companies could spend on administration and profits), the largest expansion of Medicaid in the program’s history, the free preventative services that caused so much controversy last year, etc.

I’m beginning to feel like Yogi Berra with a sense of deja vu all over again. Right now it seems like all the left can talk about is whether or not lowering raising of the age for Medicare eligibility will be part of the deal. Meanwhile it feels to me like we are missing both the forest and the trees.

When it comes to the trees, it sounds like the one thing President Obama HAS actually put on the table as part of the current negotiations is corporate tax reform. Part of that proposition is likely a reduction in the tax rate for corporations. But the truth is – with a top rate of 39% – the U.S. currently has one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world. The trouble is…most of the major corporations avoid paying much at all. For example, in 2011, the country’s 10 largest corporations paid an average 9%. And so a potential deal would mean lowering the top rate WHILE closing some of the loopholes that allow the biggest companies to avoid paying their fair share. This is a perfect area for President Obama to exploit the failure of Republicans to get into the weeds and actually work on the details. We should be paying attention to that one.

Another item that has gone almost unnoticed is that the Obama administration has taken cuts to Medicaid off the table. Given the program’s critical role in Obamacare as well as its impact on the poor and elderly, that is – as VP Biden would say – a BFD.

    – – —Congressional leaders are elected to make tough decisions, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Wednesday, and Rep. John Boehner (R-Ohio) should be willing to risk his Speakership for the sake of securing a fiscal-cliff deal.

“That’s what we all take the job to do, to risk it for something, not to just sit in the office,” the former Speaker told reporters in the Capitol.

Pelosi compared Boehner’s dilemma in the fiscal-cliff talks to her struggles as newly elected Speaker in 2007, when she backed legislation funding the troops in Iraq in the face of a liberal base that had put the Democrats in power largely on their promise to end that war.

“I, as Speaker had to make a decision – as a Democratic Speaker with a new Democratic majority, very enthusiastic about ending the war in Iraq – to bring a bill to the floor that funded the troops,” she said.

“Do you know what it was like for me to bring a bill to the floor to fund the war in Iraq, a war predicated on a misrepresentation to the American people … in that war where the President [George W. Bush] said, ‘Don’t even think about it, we’re not changing the policy to Iraq?’
