Wednesday Afternoon Thread: Dear GOP – Don’t Sweat The Technique

Classical too intelligent to be radical

Masterful, never irrelevant mathematical

Here’s some soothing souvenirs for all the years

They fought and sought, the thoughts and ideas

It’s cool when you freak to the beat

But don’t sweat the technique

  • Live Stream of Christie presser on Sandy Relief:

    • vulcan_girl

“This is why the American people HATE CONGRESS!”

      • conlakappa

Should we consider this the kickoff of his “outsider” campaign for 2016? I think so.

        • Pretty much. And some on the left are eating that shit up like Jell-O pudding. Gullible asses.

          • conlakappa

He’ll position himself as the second coming of St. Ronnie. It’s his fantasy come true. No need for ipecac…

          • MsKitty

Of course they are. He’s the right complexion after all (yeah, I said it).

          • nathkatun7

That’s the TRUTH, MsKitty! And as the good book says: The Truth Shall Make You Free!”

          • Christie turned down free money to build a better transit system. And emoprogs are okay with that because?

          • AxelFoley

            It never fails.

    • jds09

That was epic. Christine laid out the house and the tea party. lol

Congrats to Coach David Shaw on Stanford’s Rose Bowl win…isn’t this a beautiful family?

    • isonprize

OMG, his kids are ADORABLE!!! There are some cheeks to be pinched!!

    • Alexander2

Notice how none of the sports talkers mention that he is the first black coach to win the Rose Bowl or any BCS bowl in the BCS era? Bob Costas and ’em don’t like that race talk.

Btw, Louisville, coached by Charlie Strong is playing Florida in the Sugar Bowl tonight. Charlie couldn’t get a big time SEC coaching gig or interview because his wife is white.

      Go Louisville!

      More on Charlie Strong:

      • In a way I’m okay with them not mentioning it.

      • Miranda

        Yep, pulling for Louisville tonight!

    • rikyrah

      absolutely beautiful family

    • nathkatun7

Absolutely a gorgeous family! Great win for Coach Shaw! 2013 is starting out great for me because I was rooting for Stanford!

  • Miranda

Christie is trending WORLDWIDE on twitter….ROFLMAO

    • Christie ran over Boehner with a bus while Cantor rode shot-gun.

      • edp4bho

Christie didn’t need a bus. His girth can take care of that alone. Can you tell I just don’t like him ?

        • Camille

You and me both. I’m not buying into this whitewashing of an obnoxious, evil asshole like Christie.

I don’t blame him. PBO looked tired when he came back from his vacay the day after XMas. He was low-key tart, too. I know he did a two-step when he got back on AF1 and thanked God he was going back to HI.

    • No doubt laughing at the Repubs eating their own.

      • I’m just trying to wrap my mind around the fact Mitch McConnell went to the White House and in effect declared unconditional surrender.

PBO broke him. McConnell failed in his number one quest to make The President a one termer. There’s nothing left now except do what he’s told. You notice he hasn’t been making a whole lot of noise regarding another debt ceiling fight. Mitch at least for the moment has had enough of this Negro.

John Boehner Yelled At Frank LoBiondo Over Sandy Aid
    Posted: 01/02/2013 3:29 pm EST | Updated: 01/02/2013 3:59 pm EST

WASHINGTON — House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) yelled at a member of his own caucus on Tuesday night, after lawmakers from New Jersey and New York repeatedly pressed him to bring the Superstorm Sandy relief bill to the floor for a vote.

Boehner had a heated exchange with Rep. Frank LoBiondo (R-N.J.), one of the members urging the House Republican leadership to bring up the Sandy legislation, according to fellow Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.). The House adjourned on Tuesday night without passing the $60.4 billion Sandy relief package that the Senate approved last week.

“I was chasing the Speaker all over the House floor last night, trying to talk to him and his staff,” King said on CNN on Wednesday morning. “He kept telling me, wait until the vote is over, wait until the fiscal cliff vote is over, everything will be taken care of. And then he was gone. He refused to meet with us. He actually yelled at Congressman LoBiondo, saying, ‘I’m not meeting with you people.'”

    a. vetoes gay marriage
    b. busted the union
    c. increase the unemployment rate in NJ
    d. done absolutely nothing regarding property tax

He is smelling his own fart. No you will not be President, no matter how much you kiss ass. He is just another Koch lacky.

    • Word around the campfire is that the republican establishment is about to push hard for Jon Huntsman.

Huntsman will not get the same type of treatment Mittens received… the Mormon religion will be very much on the table.

        • Camille

It will be curious to see how the Clinton cronies and their sham No Labels group who all supported and fundraised for Huntsman will negotiate this situation if indeed Huntsman the loser is running again. Especially seeing as President Obama won’t be on the ballot in 2016, but another white Democrat, even their friend Hillary might be.

I’m looking at you Ed Rendell, Kiki McLean, Lynn de Rothschild etc.

      • conlakappa

I said that earlier today. Something is up with him…

      • Camille

Jon Huntsman is an even more craven, lazier, hollower and crappier version of Mitt Romney.

    • And while the Christie Show was entertaining, Boehner still put the vote of the majority of the Sandy aid off until Jan. 15th! So, if he’s replaced by Eric “No Relief For Joplin” Cantor, Sandy victims can fuggehdaboutit.

    • Camille

Thank you! I so detest this obnoxious asshole Chris Christie and not even his well choreographed attempt at appearing reasonable is convincing. Still a coldhearted, self-serving buffoon.

If only we could find a strong Democrat to run against this fat smelly arse, instead of ceding the election to him.

Come on Democrats you guys need to step up. Especially those of you always so quick to poke a finger in President Obama’s eye and play peacock in front of cameras. Here’s your chance to take on the bully who chickened out from running against President Obama in 2012.

If you guys aren’t scared of President Obama, then Christie should be an easy take down. No?

Al Jazeera Said to Be Acquiring Current TV

Al Jazeera is finalizing a deal to take over Current TV, the low-rated cable channel that was founded by Al Gore and his business partners seven years ago.

If the deal is completed, Current will provide the pan-Arab news giant with something it has sought for years: a pathway into American living rooms. Current is available in about 60 million of the 100 million homes in the United States with cable or satellite service.

Rather than simply use Current to distribute its existing English-language channel, called Al Jazeera English and based in Doha, Qatar, Al Jazeera will create a new channel based in New York, according to people with knowledge of the deal negotiations. Potentially called Al Jazeera America, roughly 60 percent of the programming will be produced in the United States while the remaining 40 percent will come from Al Jazeera English.

Yet another sign that ordinary people are not listening to the unicorn left. You cannot bash a progressive president and call yourself a progressive network. All that bitching from the likes of Cenk and his friends is just annoying. I can stomach the Stephanie Miller show and Gov Grandholm was outstanding but the rest of them are just annoying.

    • “Al Jazeera may absorb some Current TV staff members, according to the people, who insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. But Current’s schedule of shows will most likely be dissolved in the spring.”

No wonder Cenk was having a temper tantrum on Twitter about PBO the other day. I guess it’s back to YouTube for him. Meanwhile, Sharpton’s ratings are through the roof!

      • QOakaJP

Good one LT the unicorn left cannot win because they do not get it. They are not the base if they are the base why was Current TV struggling with ratings? Seems that everything they touch fails.

          • The biggest problem with the emo left is that they want power and influence to be offered and given to them instead of having to earn it.

It took having a stroke to get compassion?

Sen. Kirk says stroke changed perspective on Medicaid

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) said his debilitating stroke has sparked a new interest in the experience of people on Medicaid.

In an interview published Wednesday, Kirk said that most Illinois residents insured through the low-income health program would be eligible for 11 rehabilitation sessions following a stroke.

“Had I been limited to that I would have had no chance to recover like I did. So unlike before suffering the stroke, I’m much more focused on Medicaid and what my fellow citizens face,” Kirk told the Chicago Sun Times.

“I will look much more carefully at the Illinois Medicaid program to see how my fellow citizens are being cared for who have no income and if they suffer from a stroke,” Kirk said.
    more here:

    • JojoRaze

For some people, it ain’t an issue until it happens to them. If a sickness unto death is what it took for him to realize that Medicaid is important–he must have encountered some poor folks getting lesser care than he did–I’m glad for it.

It does say a lot about the “family values,” “America is a Christian country” crowd though, that basic sympathy isn’t enough. God has to nearly kill them for them to realize that poor people aren’t lazy, just poor.

    • goldenstar

He was my Congressman before running for Senate. Watch out.

    • Camille

That’s the Republican way. No compassion or mercy until it hits home or they are personally afflicted. And sometimes even then, they are still coldhearted assholes.

Nice to hear that Senator Kirk has had an epiphany with regard to Medicaid. Let’s hope it sustains.

*snicker*..smh..ok, good luck sucking up to the nuts with this Boehner

Boehner tells GOP he’s through with one-on-one Obama talks

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) is signaling that at least one thing will change about his leadership during the 113th Congress: He’s telling Republicans he is done with private, one-on-one negotiations with President Obama.

During both 2011 and 2012, the Speaker spent weeks shuttling between the Capitol and the White House for meetings with the president in the hopes of striking a grand bargain on the deficit.

Those efforts ended in failure, leaving Boehner feeling burned by Obama and, at times, isolated within his conference.

    more here

    • JojoRaze

So hold up, PBO is like that bad dog in the neighborhood folk try to avoid now? But I thought PBO was weak, a punk, got rolled, etc. Boehner ain’t even trying to talk with PBO now for fear of being contaminated??

I kind of want Cantor to be the Speaker now so he’ll have to do the negotiations and have Boehner backstabbing him etc.

      • Cantor doesn’t want the job. He just likes telling everybody Boehner sucks at it.

    • nellcote

But PBO is still expected to “reach out” to the goopers.

    • rikyrah

      this is hilarious.

Orange Julius is so drunk, he doesn’t know what to say anymore.

    • Camille

Oh Puleeze. President Obama was actually the only one who went out of his way to help Boehner save face and preserve whatever dignity had that was salvageable.

Boehner is not surprisingly a seriously ungrateful motherfucker.

As usual, Boehener falls to the now popular default position of blaming President Obama only because he knows the President is too much of a decent and honorable man and a mature grown-up to push back or knock Boehener down any further than his sorry, drunken arse has fallen.

I went to see Les Miserables.

I preface this by saying that I am on my third CD of Les Miserables. I worn out the other two. Les Miz and Phantom are my two favorite musicals. I have seen it about a dozen times on stage. I belong to the Les Miz cult.

Now that we have that out of the way…

    I LOVED IT!!!

    LOVED IT!!

    The casting was PERFECT.

Though Hugh Jackman is a singer and a Broadway performer, and Russell Crowe is not… it doesn’t matter. Both men on the screen SCREAM their characters. They went into the souls of Jean ValJean and Javert and brought them on the screen.

There isn’t a spoken word in the entire movie – it’s all sung….and it was rocking.

The visuals of the movie are grand and sweeping.

The music, of course, was wonderful.

But, it was the casting of the rest of the movie that hit the spot. Anne Hathaway gave it her all for Fantine and made me tear up.

Earlier this week I saw a youtbe video of an elderly couple that had cried afterwards while giving a review- I went with plenty of tissues, and I needed them.

My tears really started coming when Eponine died…I can’t say enough about the young people that they cast – they were living their characters. By the end of the movie, I was blubbering. Crowe was marvelous, and by Javert’s end, he had me sympathetic towards him.

Jackman as Prisoner 24601 – simply divine.

To the Les Miz cultists like myself, they threw us a bone by having the priest that saved Val Jean portrayed by the man most consider to be the best Jean Val Jean ever on stage.

There literally is nothing that I would change about the movie.

Even if you’ve never heard Les Miz before, I can’t see how anyone would be disappointed in the movie. It is a beautiful, stand alone movie.

    • vulcan_girl

I just saw it, and aside from Marius ans Cosette (I can’t stand their plotline), it was great. I held it together until Javert put his medal on Gavroche’s chest.

The scene with prisoners pulling that ship was epic.

  • Reid delays call on filibuster overhaul
By MANU RAJU | 1/2/13 3:30 PM EST

He has a chance to go “nuclear” Thursday, but instead Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid plans to punt a decision on the filibuster until later this month.

With a new Congress being sworn in Thursday, Reid had threatened to invoke what critics call the “nuclear option”: Changing filibuster rules by 51 votes on the first day of a new session, circumventing the usual requirement in which at least 67 senators are needed to change Senate rules.

Instead, he’ll employ a circuitous procedure to technically keep the Senate in its first legislative day by sending the chamber into recess — rather than adjourning. That move would keep the Senate in session, preserving his option of pushing forward with the so-called nuclear option at a later date.

That will buy Reid time for further negotiations with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell to see if they can reach a bipartisan agreement, aides said Wednesday. It could delay the fight until the week of Jan. 22.

    Read more:

    • This is brilliant. He’s telling McConnell straight up whether he goes nuclear or not is entirely up to him. Mitch either writes a deal to Harry’s liking or Doctor Strangeglove takes over.

    • Camille

About time Harry started using the GOP tricks against the GOP. They are not the only ones who know how to work Senate procedures to great advantage. For a while there Harry was trying to play fair, and straightforward, but these Republican terrorists don’t understand or appreciate fair. They need to get kicked hard in the butt to remind them that they aren’t in charge and that decency and doing the honorable thing does not in any way mean that Harry and the President are even remotely as they would like to think, “weak”.

  • Wind Tax-Credit Extension Seen Driving Growth, Trade Group Says
By Iain Wilson – Jan 2, 2013 10:27 AM ET

The one-year extension of a U.S. tax credit for wind power will save as many as 37,000 jobs in an industry that’s expected to stall this year, the American Wind Energy Association said. The impact may not be fully felt until next year.

The production tax credit was due to expire at the end of 2012 and the extension was part of yesterday’s passage of the bill to avert the so-called fiscal cliff that would have imposed income tax increases for most U.S. workers. The bill will cover all wind projects that start construction in 2013.

The wind industry lobbied all through 2012 for an extension of the credit. With its fate uncertain, the U.S. installed an estimated 11,800 megawatts of turbines in 2012, falling to 4,800 megawatts this year, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. With the extension, development will probably pick up in the second half of the year and may not drive significant growth until next year.

“Though too late for this year, it will allow the U.S. market to see some recovery in 2014,” Justin Wu, Hong Kong- based head of wind analysis at New Energy Finance, said by e- mail.

MSNBC and their pundits are unhinged. In fact the entire left media is having conniptions right now. From what I saw on Twitter, MSNBC Hardball is going as far as to say that George Bush won the Fiscal Cliff Deal – that’s how MAD they are that PBO managed to get 90% of what he wanted leaving the rest of the GOP to pick up the 10% crumbs mixed with dust and roach eggs.

I think some people are raving mad that their great Bush tax cuts are going up. The left media will never admit it, but they LOVED when George Bush was president. They BENEFITED from his otherwise disastrous policies while making money by pretending to criticize him from the left. Now there is an adult in charge and they are frenzied…frightened…struggling to remain relevant.

    • Dust and roach eggs.

The media personalities and their various shows all bore me. I long stopped listening to most of them, but now even the last few have completely lost me.

There really isn’t much of a difference between the rightwing media and what passes as the left/progressive/liberal media. All seek to mislead, misrepresent, push for ratings in any way they please even by destroying our democracy and putting our union and country in danger, advance the dubious agenda of corporations and the corporate masters who own them and of course demeaning, disrespecting and “punishing” the President whenever he refuses to be manipulated by them.

Besides Randi Rhodes who I listened to today for the first time since she was gone for two weeks and there was no way I was going to subject myself to Nicole Sandler, I haven turned on any “news” station since a few days before the new year and I know I haven’t missed anything. I actually think the American people are better served by not listening to or reading any of the “news” as peddled by so many of these very compromised and agenda-driven sources that span ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox, huff post etc.

The hate, misinformation and fear they deliberately stir up in the electorate simply for ratings, hits an to stay relevant for money-making adventures via book deals and lecture circuits for the flunkies and huge advances in destroying the government and by extension oversight and loser regulations and more loopholes to get even wealthier on the backs of the poor, for the corporations who own and run the flunkies.

It’s all a sickening sham. And it is only by the grace of God that President Obama can get things done on behalf of the American people in the face of all this messy, obstructionist, greed driven madness.

I think we’ve broke it down before – the Emo-Progressive/Purity Left and the Professional Left hate Obama with the power of a thousand suns, but for very different reasons. Remember, the Purity Left are the dope fiends, and the Professional Left are the dealers. Obama is the narc Its a game of Pimps and Hoes:

The Purity Left is all about that, purity. Its a zero sum game for these guys in politics – either Obama follows their demands to the letter or he’s an complete failure and a sellout. Your OWS homies aren’t going to be satisfied until all bank CEO’s are dragged through the streets and Angela Davis is becomes the next Secretary of Housing They also live in, and are addicted to a failure-prone fantasy world like the Tea Party. For the purity left, to paraphrase Dr. Michael Eric Dyson – the only way they’ll be satisfied would for “Friedrich Engels to be Treasury Secretary and Karl Marx for Secretary of Labor”. They can’t review their own failures and missteps. Purity Left can’t recognize the limits of their ideals. They’ll back a clown car of people not qualified to run a hot dog stand, let alone Congress or Senate because ‘they stand on principle’. They can’t look at 40+ years of failure (even in places friendly to them, like college towns and parts of NYC & LA) and think ‘Hmmm…have we’ve been doing something wrong?’

Obama, basically says “Look guys, you’ve been doing it wrong for 40 years. Republicans have pretty much have been kicking us in the balls since the 70’s. Isn’t it time to try something different?” But like old Black church ladies who can’t understand how anyone could wear jeans to Sunday service – they gasp that someone is propose doing something effective instead something idealistic. They want their candy but Obama tells them to ‘eat their peas’.

The Professional Left, OTOH, are mostly in it for the money. If the Purity Left and Emo-Progressives are strung out political junkies addicted to Mau-Mau Faux Left Bullshit, the Professional Left are pushers selling that uncut China White. Whether they’re professional artists like Tom Morello and Michael Moore, intellectuals like Noam Chomsky and Cornell West, columnists like Glenn Greenwald and Matt Taibi, comedians like John Stewart and Bill Maher or talking heads like Ed Shultz and Cenk Uygur, the Professional Left is to prime the pump and create an enemy for their readers to boil over about, so they can keep subscribing Rolling Stones, clicking the ads on, donating to Pacifica Radio, getting the autographed copy of your latest polemic tome on your book tour, buying tickets to the latest overpriced concert tour or in the case of Current TV, subscribing the “Everything but the Porn” cable plan. Hell, ginning up outrage and charging prime dollar for ‘fighting against it’ is what Credo Mobile does.

This isn’t to same that these people don’t have core beliefs – I think most of these guys believe in what they say. But they don’t make their money off their beliefs. Arriana Huffngton is the reigning queen of the Professional Left and she’s by all evidence, still the same elitist right wing witch she was in the 90’s. These folks make their paper terrifying gullible lefties while confusing and often angering moderates and pragmatists like us. These guy hate Obama for a very simple reason – his incremental progressive gains chip away at their Utopian narrative, costing them dollars. Look, if you make your money running your mouth about liberal things the last thing you want to see is another guy to come across the way actually doing liberal things.

Think about it. If I’m Cornell West or Michael Moore, no one is going to give a tinker’s damn what I think about Single Payer once Obama-Care gets up and running by 2014-2016, which kind of eats into my asking price when talk to by publisher or the university about my salary. If you make your money of Anti-war songs, well, uh, kind of hard to protest war when our second longest running war is over and everyone pretty much agrees that the longest running war will be over before next year’s mid-terms. If you’re Ralph Nader complaining about Obama not locking up bankers – kind of hard to book that next speaking tour in Boston when Massachusetts just elected Elizabeth Warren & Obama created the Consumer Protection Bureau.

Basically, you don’t have to always agree with Obama on everything, I certainly don’t. But, you can’t pretend that he’s some sort of enemy of American Democracy without showing how little you understand about American Democracy. And if your business model is that ‘government is the enemy’ government doing this right undermines your sales pitch. Again, like the Tea Party Super PACS and Fox News, the professional Left profit off of government discord. In a strange way, Tavis Smiley & Amy Goodman are just as much paid agitators as Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly, they just make a lot less money and on occasion touch on things we care about.

So, if you can’t find something real to complain about, you blow up crap that that is kind insignificant (investigations into Occupy Wall Street are not COINTELPRO people, get over yourselves) or just make up stuff as you go along (Obama is personally spying on you and ‘Fast and Furious’ isn’t a real scandal). Or, sticking with our drug dealing analogy – when you cocaine supply runs low, you cut the product and start selling free base and crack.

Again, lets keep it straight – the Purity Left hate Obama because he’s a grown up, the Professional Left hates Obama because he eats into their profits. The Right just keeps asking ‘What dat Nigger doing on a horse?’ **

**Sorry, but that had to be the funniest line in the entire movie. Despite my wife & mother detesting the violence and use of the N-word, most of my family loved ‘Django Unchained’ and would tell Spike Lee to suck eggs.

These white males are something else…wow inferiority omplex is amazing. I think the underlining pro lem for them is he does not act on their mom and. I hope they know slavery is over and we have our own viewpoints.

Sorry hence forth, krugman is a piece of shit to m. Ou can express your viewpoint without coded and loaded language.

    • GN

Krugman’s definitely returned to his drama king ways. The hyperbolic language is the usual PL habit of feeding emos with cheap theatrics and emotionalism in place of sound analysis or research. I didn’t bother to read the column after seeing him quoted as calling President Obama a wimp.

      • Camille

You get the sense that this is how the only way they know to try to stay relevant or get President Obama’s attention.

Krugman can’t believe that for all the noise he’s made these past four years the President still doesn’t really acknowledge him and his tantrum throwing arse.

And who can blame the President. Krugman and his ilk are terribly immature, vindictive, petty and unreliable. The last thing this President needs on his team in the midst of rebuilding an economy and a country that was brought to it’s knees courtesy of George Bush and his merry Republicans.

All legislation that doesn’t pass in a 2-year session of Congress has to be reintroduced in the next session. Was it a question of authorization or appropriation?

      • crazycanuck

        I don’t know conlakappa.

      • nellcote

It was a question of Cantor not wanting white men to be prosecuted for sexually/assaulting Native women. I guess the answer is authorization.

  • GN

@MikeGrunwald [author of The New New Deal, excellent book!]
Last week: Obama’s gonna give away the store! This week: OK maybe he didn’t this time but next time he totally will! Sounds familiar…

Notice that just like the far right, the PL very rarely concedes that they’ve gotten something wrong; they simply double-down and keep the negative media against President Obama going regardless of what’s happening. They truly are a hindrance to progress.

    • Camille

Mike Grunwald has quickly become one of my favorite people. I gave his excellent book as Christmas/Hannukah gifts to several friends and family.

    – — – —House GOP Shames America by Endangering Women – —

    — – — It’s not just the Sandy bill. Eric Cantor (R-VA) and John Boehner (R-OH) also killed legislation that would help protect 30 million American women’s lives.

Yes, Joe Biden’s Violence Against Women Act was just killed for the first time since 1994, thanks to the House Republicans. We are truly going backward with each moment these knuckle draggers occupy the House.

    – – -Each congress before this one managed to keep the VAWA alive with no problem, because it was basic: It provided funding for the investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women, money to state and local government to fight domestic violence, helped support women fleeing an abuser, and so much more.

—-But just as with the Sandy bill, House Republicans found much to object to in the reauthorization of the VAWA. For example, it failed to adequately shame victims and also failed to shield perpetrators.

This is utter BS. A lot of states (certainly mine, at least for the moment, until and unless the Republicans screw it up) have laws prohibiting ANYone other than a police officer, EVEN people w/ concealed-carry permits, from bringing ANY gun into a school. Especially a public school. The Buckeye Firearms Foundation has ABSOLUTELY NO SAY WHATSOEVER over gun policy IN ANY school. That is WAY above their pay grade. STATE LAWS AND LOCAL SCHOOL BOARDS determine those policies.
    – – – –TRUTH!

    – –NOW: – —‘Armed Teacher Training Program’ Launches In 15 States – —

    – —- –An Ohio gun owners’ group is launching an “Armed Teacher Training Program” to instruct teachers and school staff on how to shoot off firearms in the classroom.

Perhaps at the outlandish suggestion of the National Rifle Association, who last month called for armed guards in every school as a response to the tragedy at Sandy Hook elementary, such programs are popping up around the country. In Ohio, the Buckeye Firearms Foundation, along with a group called the Tactical Defense Institute, is crafting a curriculum specifically designed for teachers and school staff. A local Fox affiliate has details on who is signing up– they report that more than one third of the applicants are women, and that “more than half of the applicants work in high schools”:

As of Wednesday, the Armed Teacher Training Program has attracted more than 600 applicants from several states including Ohio, Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Nevada, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and West Virginia.
    – – -SNIP – – –

Arming teachers is illogical. More guns in classrooms, inevitably, will lead to accidents and unintended harm. Shootouts between teachers and gunmen is unlikely to be a net positive for students. But moreover, doesn’t get to the heart of the issue. America’s gun violence epidemic is not limited to classrooms.

—- — –Bobby Womack, R&B legend, has been diagnosed with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, according to revelations he made to the BBC. In an interview, the singer-songwriter who is now 68 shared, ”The doctor said, ‘You have signs of Alzheimer’s.’ He said it’s not bad yet, but it’s going to get worse.”

The soul singer has been experiencing difficulty remembering the names of his collaborators while performing, in addition to his own song lyrics. ”How can I not remember songs I wrote? That’s frustrating,” Womack admitted.

The star is in the middle of a career resurgence. After Womack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, he released the LP The Bravest Man in the Universe in 2012, his first album of new material since 1994. The album was produced by Blur and Gorillaz singer Damon Albam, who has also invited Womack to perform and record with him.

    – –Dow closes up 300 on ‘fiscal cliff’ deal

    — –Financial markets rode a wave of relief over the “fiscal cliff” Wednesday, as stocks surged on news that Washington had avoided policies that could have caused a recession.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 308 points, or 2.4 percent, in the first day of trading after Congress approved the contentious tax and spending package. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both experienced similar jumps, with the latter climbing over 3 percent in the first day of trading in 2013.

    — The stock spike comes after policymakers managed to reach an agreement that averts, at least temporarily, many of the tax increases and spending cuts that could have thrust the U.S. into a recession. The last-minute agreement was passed by both the House and the Senate in late-night hours after intense negotiations. – —-
