This is going to sound bad, but I really hope he doesn’t say anything of ssm. Hope he just keeps on saying what he has been saying

        me too

      • edp4bho

I don’t think it sounds bad. I will wonder if he seems to have given into the pressure of an issue he settled, IMO, with legislation and outreach. Seems now he’s like a pinata….poke a stick in him to see what he’s made of. I say bring on reparations…..see how the media deals with that.

        • BoomerGal

I would LOVE to see THAT!

      • Alma98

Me too cc; I’m tired of the bullying and demonetization of black people. I love how they try and shame black people into doing what they want. Why must we be the saviors and conscious of America an America that still treats us like 3rd class citizens, and only speak to us when something important to them is threatened? Otherwise we are invisible to them. The disrespect and racism shown to President Obama by so called supporters is something I will not forget or forgive selfish s.o.b’s.

        • BoomerGal

Totally agree, but they’re not the only ones who’ve been manipulating us. In many instances we’ve allowed ouselves to be used.

          • Alma98

I totally agree we can be our own worst enemy at times.

I hope the President doesn’t say anything but what he has been saying previously.

And the negative reactions are already swirling in the PL internets, just in case…”why didn’t he say that yesterday?” “Too little, too late.” “Just words.” “Bad timing, OBAMA.” “PBO, why are YOU making this an issue?” “I don’t believe you.” “Butbutbut Guantanamo and medical marijuana, and drones, and Bradley Manning, and mandates, and…”

      • aleth

They are predictable to us because we deal with this circumstance everyday in our daily lives.

Always having to prove ourselves while they attempt to dictate the rules or change them once we more than exceed their expectation.

I don’t care for their opinion because their opinions resulted in 2010 results. They are predictable and easy manipulated by the “corporate media” they claim to detest.

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

I see Oliver Willis is in EmoProg overdrive whining about PBO. He’s saying PBO’s position on gay marriage is the same as Romney’s. #NewMediaNegroes

I am really PO’d about his guys. Because even though I believed VP Joe was well-intentioned on Sunday, he’s really stepped into and put POTUS in a box that there was NO way of coming out of. I’m not of the mind that this was an unforced error on VP Biden, who I loved, but damn we were (and still in my book) are on a role.

I seriously think that the effect of one little slip up has changed the narrative that the Dems were on offense. Now Robmey is sitting back saying complete lies (while whining and dining Howard Fineman, ya’ll see the pic he posted on twitter about “sitting in Robmey HQ) and now this stuff has snowballed.

Ugh. I’m mad ya’ll almost seething at how quickly alleged supporters allowed the MSM and Repub pols pull their strings like pupetteers!

Bill Clinton as a GOP model
By Steve Benen – Wed May 9, 2012 1:20 PM EDT.

For those who followed politics closely in the 1990s, you’ll recall that Republicans hated Bill Clinton with the heat of a thousand suns. GOP officials and activists woke up every day with one question on their minds: “How can I destroy the Clinton presidency today?”

It was rather remarkable, then, to see Mitt Romney in Michigan yesterday, suggesting the former Democratic president is a great model. “President Clinton, remember, he said the era of big government was over. President Obama brought it back with a vengeance,” Romney said, before praising Clinton on welfare reform.

A Romney aide said the move is intended to “devised as a trick to drive a wedge between centrist and liberal Democrats.” This might be more effective if it was less ridiculous.

  • Rhoda

I don’t know why everyone is getting all hot and bothered about this interview. The White House reached out to Robin Roberts because they like her and POTUS wanted to talk about gay marriage in the context of the loss on amendment one yesterday. This decision was made in the context of a loss. Just as he took the loss in ’10 and reframed the debate with that interview where he copped to a shellacking for one reason; to end the village discussion and get back to the story he wanted to tell.

Same here. Gay marriage was taking up to much space; he’s making room to get back on message IMO. And whatever he decides (I’m thinking he comes out for gay marriage) it’s with the election in mind.

    • Ebogan63

You called Rhoda! Now can we get back to the election?

      • Aquagranny911

        YES!!!

      • Rhoda

        Fired up…Ready to go!!!!!

    • Aquagranny911

Agreed! Imho, this whole non-issue is about the words. While some have no problem with the idea of “civil union” they get all crazy when the word “marriage” is used. What gay people that I know want are the same rights that other couples have when they enter a “union” with the person they love. Tons of hetero people get “married” by JP’s all the time, that’s a “civil union” There are gay couples who get “married” by ministers in religious ceremonies even though their “union” is not “civil” or recognized. My church does these ceremonies. It is sacred & satisfying to the couples involved even though the laws do not protect them or their “union.”

The so called “gay community” & their vocal activists have totally dropped the ball on SSM. All they know how to do is whine & expect everyone else from the Prez on down to do the work for them. They are not willing to get out & talk to the people, make it personal, make it real & win support. They are strident & off putting. I, myself, could even sell this if that was something I was committed to. What is the matter with these people that they can’t do for themselves?

  • Jeremy

I really hope that President Obama doesn’t come out in favor of gay marriage because this election is more important than wedge issues. The President needs to win a lot of swing states in order to get a big victory and the Democratic party needs to win the House and hold the Senate. We don’t have time for this nonsense.

I will say this I hate the Professional left and the emo progressives more than anything right now.

    • Aquagranny911

Me too & in the wake of all this figging BS, I dredged $30 out of my grocery money and sent it to OFA this morning. It is worth eating refritos & tortillas for a week or so to support PBO. Besides they say meat is bad for you & I also have a big garden. We won’t starve & I choose to put my $$ where my mouth is, lol.

    • Jeremy

Well It seems like he came out in favor of it. I just hope this does not become an issue in states like NC where it would be nice for Obama to get a large margin in the electoral college. The emo progressives make me sick.

  • Miranda

I can’t stand emoprogs, i really can’t. I can’t stand this shitty media we are forced to rely upon for any information. I can’t stand these WATB and arrogant, worthless, trifling mofos that have the maturity of a toddler. I can’t stand these stupid stupid numbnuts.

    BREAKING: Obama Embraces Marriage Equality

By Igor Volsky on May 9, 2012 at 2:51 pm

President Obama has come out in support of marriage equality for gay and lesbian people in an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts this afternoon:

OBAMA: I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.

    MORE: http://thinkprogress.org/lgbt/2012/05/09/481147/obama-marriage-2/

    • edp4bho

Okay, I’m saying this. I am not in support of SSM, so unless PBO means this as a consitutional, equal rights support, he and I do not see eye to eye. I vividly recall him saying he “does not believe” in gay marriage due to his personal religious beliefs, so am I to assume his worldly views trump his beliefs in the so-called word of God? I cringed when he felt he had to show his birth certificate, and I cringed when he was forced to speak on race. In other words, he had to accomodate certain standards not previously applied to white presidents. Enough is enough. Don’t ever compromise your spiritual beliefs for those of fallible man. I will try to calm myself, and not be a Velma whoever.

      • Town

It really doesn’t matter what he believes, as long as he upholds the Constitution of the U.S. I personally believe gay couples should be able to go down to the courthouse and get out a license and get married.

I DO NOT believe the church should have to perform a marriage ceremony for them. If a church/mosque/temple chooses to do so, fine. But they shouldn’t have to if they don’t want to.

All of those presidents back in the 50s and 60s may not have personally believed that black people should be able to go to school or serve in the armed forces alongside whites, but they upheld the law.

For me, this controversy was made up and manufactured because the gay fauxgressives knew they weren’t going to be able to defeat Amendment 1 and they needed a scapegoat.

Enter Pres Obama & black people.

          THIS.

        • edp4bho

I cautiously agree with your first paragraph, and it doesn’t matter if I agree with the rest, respectfully. This has always been a devisive issue, which is why it is still unsettled. I maintain that I am annoyed it had to come out at this time, as if PBO doesn’t have enough shit to be concerned about. Actually, now that it is out, I too am wondering why now? It’s only natural. Was it a response to the fluff caused by VP Biden, or was he going to? I’m as curious as anyone else, admittedly or not. But none of this diminishes my support. I just have to take a break for a bit. It’s been emotionally draining.

          • Town

Actually, now that it is out, I too am wondering why now?
            ————————–

Because Romney is behind and they need to gin up a controversy to drag Obama down, that’s why. Obama’s still filling up stadiums while Romney barely gets 1000 people. The largest crowd Romney’s ever drawn is about 1100-1200 people. They tried to fool the people with pictures of empty Obama stadiums to get people to think nobody likes Obama anymore but too many people tweeted and posted up pictures of the rallies with packed arenas.

So they jumped on this issue to turn people off of Obama on the left AND the right.

          • edp4bho

            Understood. Now listening to host on radio (AA): 2 things;

            1. Rendell challenging him to “man up” and admit support.

            2. PBO has danced around this for political reasons.

Yes, these things matter, and will be bandied about for atleast the next month. Will not be a short term issue.

          • Town

Don’t forget, many Democrats want Pres. Obama to lose and lose big in November as well, and will be working under the table with Republicans to ensure that happens.

        • BoomerGal

          There it is!

        • Admiral_Komack

Once again, Town breaketh it down.

        • Camille

          Thank you.

    • edp4bho

You know, I think I have to backtrack on this a bit. Hadn’t read the whole article yet, but just there words here:

“for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”

Seems he didn’t actually say he believes in it, just that all things being equal, he has to commit to the human rights of it all. Atleast I sure hope he has not compromised his Godly beliefs. This is important to me. The talk is that he endorses it…..maybe! I feel strongly about God’s word and I do not let man’s word trump His. Sorry to sound preachy, but I really can’t stand that we, African Americans, have to be the arbiters of what’s good and right for everybody, and especially those who don’t give a g-damn about us, regardless of what we do. So, I have to step back and re-consider how I feel about our stand in this country when we are always used as scapegoats for everybody else’s pleasures.

Mitt Romney accuses President Obama of doing too little and also too much on college affordability+*
    by Laura Clawson

It’s not a flip flop, it’s just rank, amoral campaign opportunism: Mitt Romney is simultaneously attacking President Obama for not having prevented college tuition from rising and for his efforts to keep college affordable.

On the one hand, Romney’s campaign would have us know that one of the ways the “Obama economy” is causing American families to struggle is that “Since President Obama Took Office, The Average Cost Of College Has Increased By 25% At Four-Year Public Schools Across The Country.” On the other hand, at a campaign event on Monday, Romney characterized Obama’s fight to, among other things, keep student loan interest rates low as “In an effort to try to get [young voters] engaged, he’s going to promise to give a lot of free stuff to them. And to say, I’ll pay for your education, or I’ll get rid of the loans.”

It’s kind of an achievement, actually: Romney is making two attacks on the same subject that contradict each other and yet are both wildly inaccurate. Yes, tuition at public four-year colleges has increased by 25 percent—21.7 percent if you control for inflation. But Obama does not control state higher education budgets, which determine tuition levels. Romney, though, did control a state budget as governor of Massachusetts, and cut higher education funding and increased what students had to pay. So Romney is attacking Obama for something that isn’t under Obama’s control but that once was under Romney’s control, with the exact results Romney is attacking Obama for.

Then to top it off, Romney is attacking Obama for his efforts to make college more affordable in the ways that are at the president’s disposal. Obama, for instance, included a tax credit for tuition in the stimulus, has fought for Pell Grants, has done what he can to lower student loan payments without congressional action, and is pushing Congress to keep student loan interests from doubling on July 1. But though Obama has focused on this issue repeatedly throughout his presidency, Romney is attempting to brand these efforts as a late in the game attempt to essentially buy the votes of young people, to “give a lot of free stuff to them.”

In other words, when it comes to college costs, Romney’s got nothing—he’s got a bad record and no plan to make things better. And rather than trying to develop a plan, he’s just going to throw accusations at President Obama that are variously contradictory, irrelevant and false. Sounds like his entire campaign, actually.

Despite his lack of access, West arrived in Washington with his mother and brother on Inauguration Day, wanting to participate in the historic event. As they were checking into their hotel, the Wests were astonished to find that their bellhop was luckier than they. “We drive into the hotel, and the guy who picks up my bags from the hotel has a ticket to the inauguration,” he told Truthdig. “We had to watch the thing in the hotel.” ,Later that day, West’s ruffled feathers were smoothed when he ran into Arianna Huffington and she invited the West brothers to join her at the Huffington Post party. Of all the celebrations that night, “that turned out to be the best one,” says West. Arianna let him pick a few people from the rope line, he says: friend of Obama’s John Rogers, and Michelle Obama’s brother Craig Robinson. Inside, West ran into his nemesis, Larry Summers. “I shook his hand. He looked like a skeleton. I said, ‘Congratulations, my brother.’ ”
    —————————

Come on, now. Do you REALLY think Craig Robinson, brother of the First Lady of the United States, was standing around hoping to get inside the Huffington Post party, when he had a first class hookup to all of the official inauguration balls?

    • edp4bho

Of course not. Now he’ll have reiterate it in every speech he makes during his campaigning. I would like to clarify what I wrote previously. Even though I don’t endorse SSM, I understand we live in a country where in some parts, it is lawful. Therefore, people should be able to partake of the same rights as others. Doesn’t make me accept it, but scripture says, pay Caesar what is his. I am just hoping PBO is on the same wave with folks like me who put scripture before man. That’s what I understood about him before I voted for him, so this is not a new condition I put on him since he’s been elected. I do however, wish he did not feel he has to respond to every fuckin crisis in this country. He needs to be able to maintain a sense of privacy in his personal and spiritual life. He will not be any more accepted than he was before. Okay, so let’s have that reparations talk.

  • edp4bho

Ironically, this will, IMO, only open the door for more complaints from the AA community who know that this issue was pushed on him by whites. Let’s watch what happens, folks.

  • MonieTalks

I copied it so yall don’t have to click. Oh and what did yall say about goal posts?
    Pam Spaulding:

The President’s position to date has been dodge and parry that ultimately made no sense politically. Robin Roberts in her live report moments ago, cited that President Obama’s “evolution” finally occurred because of a conversation with his daughters, who attend school with kids who have same-sex parents, and that it wasn’t a big deal.

Well, I guess that’s as good a cover story for the debutante debut on this matter as any. After all, Mitt Romney has staked out a position in favor of a federal marriage amendment, something that will go nowhere. It all comes down to whether either of them think this is a decision point for voters who are out of work, have lost their home or health insurance.

Even as one part of me celebrates the end of the torture, as I said earlier, it smarts sitting here in NC where his evolution is cold comfort for those of us now living under the thumb of a marriage discrimination amendment.

Being jerked around, constantly seen as an ATM, and the man can’t even state the obvious, and his surrogates continue this tap dance of stupidity over what is or isn’t an affirmation that the President believes in full equality for gay and lesbian couples. His own campaign couldn’t even lift a digital finger to tell people to vote against discrimination here in NC. The President can’t even sign an executive order barring employment discrimination against LGBTs in federal contracts.

Being able to come out of the closet and not be fired is eons more important sitting here in NC than the right to marry, but I’m sure that POV and emotional drain of this won’t carry the day among most of my fellow LGBTs celebrating the President’s statement.

You’ll see that in the professional LGBT org reactions below the fold.

But some us will never forget the way these people have treated this good man, despite all he has done to advance their interests, just because he is black. I am telling you white privilege is a bitch! The same people who want black people to valorize Lincoln, FDR, JFK, LBJ and Bill Clinton — presidents who never embraced Black people the way President Obama has embraced gay people– are busy defecating all over everything President Obama has done.

Yes, I support the fundamental rights of gay people, and I applaud the President for taking a courageous stand that puts his re-election at risk. But I am sick and tired of loudmouth gay activists who continue to pile shit on the President and the Black community as if Black people are the source of all their problems. These activists never treated Bill Clinton or George W. Bush the way they are treating President Obama. In my book, it all boils down to white privilege.

    • Camille

Sorry, but who is this person?

    • JojoRaze

People don’t know how the law works at all. Slavery was a state issue until a federal amendment to the constitution said otherwise. Women’s suffrage, black people voting. Errythang is a dang state’s rights issue unless clearly enumerated in the constitution, ie immigration, printing money, or there is a groundswell (activism, boots-on-the-ground) to get it changed and added to the Constitution. Pam et al really need to go have some seats.

This is another thing that bothers me as well–that the president went out on a limb and damaged himself for ungrateful, entitled people who don’t give him any cover with activism to take these positions.

And now, for the goal post moving portion of the “President Obama Supports Same-Sex Marriage” show…

Obama Endorses Marriage Equality… But Not For All

    —By Adam Serwer
    | Wed May. 9, 2012 12:43 PM PDT

    Excerpt:

A president endorsing, even as a “personal position,” marriage equality for gays and lesbians is, as Vice President Joe Biden once said, a big fucking deal. But Obama has endorsed marriage equality federalism—not the notion that marriage for gays and lesbians is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution that can never be taken away. Obama has adopted the same position that Vice President Dick Cheney did in 2004, when Cheney said he believed in marriage equality but that the states should be allowed to decide by a show of hands, as North Carolina did Tuesday, whether gays and lesbians have the same rights as everyone else.

Cheney served in an administration that was extremely hostile to gay rights. With the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, the administration’s refusal to defend in court the federal ban on same-sex marriage, and Wednesday’s endorsement of same-sex marriage federalism, Obama is the most pro-LGBT rights president in US history. Nevertheless, the position he articulated today accepts the legitimacy of states like North Carolina subjecting the rights of gays and lesbians to a popular vote.

In other words, Obama has left room for more evolution.

    • rikyrah

      can I just say it..

      IT’S THE SUPREME COURT, MOFOS

      • Nathkatun7

You can say it over and over again! I am sick of these gay idiots who have absolutely no understanding of how the federal government functions. Right now individual states control the legalization of marriage. The Federal government does not issue marriage certificates. There are only two ways the federal government can get involved: Congress can pass a law, under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment” banning state discrimination against gay marriages–something I am sure is not likely to happen soon. The other way is for the Supreme Court to issue a ruling stating that denying gay couples the right to marry violates the Constitution. The only role the President can play is to push Congress to pass such a law or file a friend of the court brief urging the Supreme Court to outlaw state discrimination against gay marriages.

Right now the President is powerless to do anything. He can state his opposition to the NC law but he is still bound to accept its legitimacy because there is no federal law, or a Supreme Court decision, mandating states to recognize the rights of gays to marry.

By the way, Adam Serwer is not only an idiot but he is a shameless liar! The President never said: “states should be allowed to decide by a show of hands, as North Carolina did Tuesday, whether gays and lesbians have the same rights as everyone else.” He is just putting his words in the President’s mouth. Many States, unlike the Federal government, do make some laws through popular initiatives. In fact we do that all the time here in California. In fact the idea of people’s initiatives was pioneered by the Progressive movement.

    - – –

    – – –President Obama stepped into the fray over gay marriage in a big way today, telling ABC News flatly that he thinks it should be legal. Here’s the big quote from the interview with Robin Roberts, which will air on the evening news:

“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or Marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.”

Obama called it a “generational” change occurring in the US and referred to his own daughters. “It wouldn’t dawn on them that somehow their friends’ parents would be treated differently,” he said.

    – – – -Obama declares support for gay marriage-

    – – — President Obama today announced that he now supports same-sex marriage, reversing his longstanding opposition amid growing pressure from the Democratic base and even his own vice president.

In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, the president described his thought process as an “evolution” that led him to this place, based on conversations with his own staff members, openly gay and lesbian service members, and conversations with his wife and own daughters.

“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama told Roberts, in an interview to appear on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Thursday. Excerpts of the interview will air tonight on ABC’s “World News with Diane Sawyer.”

    – -The president stressed that this is a personal position, and that he still supports the concept of states deciding the issue on their own. But he said he’s confident that more Americans will grow comfortable with gays and lesbians getting married, citing his own daughters’ comfort with the concept.

  • GOVCHRIS1988

Ok, I listened, I held back because I’m still pretty damned pissed about all of this silly season shit. I have a couple of points.

One: President Barack Obama is the most courageous, upstanding, and decent man that I have ever seen. I am proud that my vote for him in the Georgia Primary in 2008 and for the 2008 General Election was the first for a President. He had my vote in 2012 primary and he STILL and ALWAYS WILL have my vote, especially in November or 2012. I will work like hell, like my life depended on it to see him remain in the White House for the next four years.

Two: This also scares me. It scares me, because I know how the world works. I know how cruel it has been, cruel it is currently, and cruel as it will be in the future. When President Lyndon Baines Johnson as President of the United States signed the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act, he said that, “We may lose the south for a generation.” He knew that with this act of courage, that most of the nation would reject it outright well into the future. All the way to today even. Last year, as a Senior in College, I worked in the Georgia State Capitol as an intern, in the Republican ran House Appropriations Office. I came to know those people with a party affiliation different from mine. Personally, they were friendly people, who at least tried to make me as comfortable as possible. It may have been a little acting on my part, because I was always taught to always verify before giving full trust. These would be people who would see this affirmation and that they would rebuke him for it immensely. Same with many voters in this state. They would agree with him on every thing else, and for this one issue, they would vote against him on this. This is what I fear the most. I know these people. Some of these people are in my family. I still will always love these folks, yet I know this would probably affect their decision.

Three: If the Gay and Lesbian community are still holding on to their dollars or refusing to volunteer for the President after all of this and he loses in November, So help me God we won’t be there for the Gay and Lesbian community. Take this to heart, because I mean that. This President has done so much. He has repealed the DADT policy. He has stopped enforcing DOMA. He has lifted the AIDS travel ban. He has hired more Gay and Lesbians in his administration than any President of the United States in history. And TODAY, he has done the one of the most courageous things a political figure has done, publically stated that same-sex marriage should be legal. If I ever hear that this President is doing this from political reasons and that he really doesn’t support the Gay community, I will fire off on that person harder than a snub nose .38 to the temple. The Republicans are already planning to enact multiple ballot measures to have a repeat of last night in N.C. and more aptly, a repeat of 2004. Get your shit together. I want to really see a push for more outreach to communities. I no longer want to hear of rallies, and support groups for this issue in Los Angeles, or Atlanta, or New York. Damn it, I want Nashville, Little Rock, Tulsa, Montgomery, Birmingham. I want to see color with this fight. I shouldn’t just see toeheaded folks organizing, but also want to see some Black, Latino, Asian, Native American, Mixed, damn it I want to see American and how it REALLY LOOKS. I want to see an effort to debate church going folks. I don’t want to see the bible used as a text for harm, but a text for understanding. I want to see them treat them as they want to be treated, with the utmost respect and dignity. Hate makes a person look terrible, and I would rather have someone look at the person who doesn’t understand have the hateful stance rather than someone who knows what he speaks. This is the only path to winning your Civil Rights, because as Black Americans have always known, our rights are never given to us automatically. We had to fight with our emotions, psychological well being, our families and friends, even with our lives. Many were put in early graves due to that fight and the Gay and Lesbian community must know that it is one of the necessities of getting rights that should be afforded to every person.

Again I stress, this is game time. We need all hands on deck. Its going to be a hell of a fight and if we fight against each other, we will lose like hell.

    • Bri

The gay community better not come out with any more demands. This man put his re-election on the line for them, and they BETTER donate, canvass, phone bank for this man who is risking EVERYTHING to make them feel content.

      • Town

They won’t and in fact will worker harder to ensure his defeat.

This isn’t about rights, this is about WE DON’T WANT THIS NIGGER HAVING THE *POWER* TO DETERMINE WHAT WE CAN AND CANNOT DO.

It’s ok for the white man to tell gays what they can and cannot do but they aren’t going to be having no NIGGER tell them what they can and cannot do.

In many ways, Howard Dean was the first major public official in either party to lead the way towards marriage equality – making this milestone possible.

          Thank you, Governor Dean.

          Howard Dean
President Obama’s public support for marriage equality is an historic affirmation of the fundamental American value of equal rights for all. Having signed the nation’s first law allowing Civil Unions as Governor of Vermont, I’m also proud to see our president affirm the belief that I and so many other Americans hold: loving and committed couples should have the same benefits that are extended through marriage. Marriage equality is a right and a benefit to all families

    - –

    – – – -Hairstylist Vidal Sassoon, who undid the beehive with his wash-and-wear cuts and went on to become an international name in hair care, died today of natural causes at his Los Angeles home at age 84, police said. When Sassoon picked up his shears in the 1950s, styled hair was typically curled, teased, piled high, and shellacked into place. Then came the 1960s, and Sassoon’s creative cuts, which required little styling and fell into place perfectly every time, fit right in with the fledgling women’s liberation movement.– –

“My idea was to cut shape into the hair, to use it like fabric and take away everything that was superfluous,” Sassoon said in 1993 in the Los Angeles Times, which first reported his death. “Women were going back to work, they were assuming their own power.

This is something I just read…via ABL, via BJ:

    Monkeyfister Says:

I work for DoD. As DADT Repeal was being finalized, we had an “All Hands” meeting, outlining the new policies, and looking into the future. This is what SecNav had to say (paraphrased):

Repeal Of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Will Ultimately Legalize Gay Marriage Nationally…

Amongst the issues being discussed in finalizing the repeal policy, is what happens when a legally married gay/lesbian joins the Military, and is stationed in a state that bans gay marriage, or doesn’t recognize it. DoD will must needs recognize the marriage, and provide housing/BHA, TriCare, and Base privileges, etc., and this will, in the end, force the states to recognize gay military marriages (and divorces) if they want the contracts. The states won’t be able to recognize ONLY Military marriages—equal protection—and one by one, the bans will crumble in short order.

That’s how it is going to end. North Carolina voted for the 19th Century… OK. The 21st Century is going to steamroll them, and the rest, in fairly short order.

    __________________________________________________________

This is interesting because, DADT was a starting point all along.

  • Alma98

If anyone thinks we can just move on now that he supports gay marriage. You are sadly mistaken because the gop controlling msm is going to make this about how do poc especially black feel about it. They’re going to run it in the ground there will be poll after poll about how do poc feel on the subject. Like I’ve said before they better have his back.

    • Bri

This is definitely not over as I think about it. The bar will be raised by the gay community and activists. Like I said earlier they will demand he and Michelle attend a gay wedding, and more. This SSM debate IMO will be the “talk” of the summer, polls and more polls.

Roland is already saying on CNN that AA pastors will likely say that they disagree with POTUS, but they would still support him…but he did say that maybe AA relgous jpeople will withhold campaign funds.

Roland is already saying on CNN that AA pastors will likely say that they disagree with POTUS, but they would still support him…but he did say that maybe AA relgous jpeople will withhold campaign funds.

So agree with Ro-Ro on this. How can black pastors in good conscience tell their members to support PBO with this? SSM is considered in most churches to be a sign of the end times and sinfulness. This is so risky and I don’t think it’ll pay off. There’s going to have to be some assurances that churches won’t have to co-sign gay marriages in order for this to work AT ALL. I mean, an iron-clad federal law at that. The right-wing are going to say that PBO is going to force churches to perform same-sex marriages and that will harm him in November.

I wish Dems would accept dog-whistles. PBO did everything to advocate for lgbts but say the words “I support gay marriage” but that wasn’t enough.

        • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

You mean the same Black pastors that took money from Bush II in exchange for support, thus leading to two Bush II terms that wrecked havoc on the Black community? I wish those mofos would try to pull some self-righteous bs like that.

          • JojoRaze

I know…but I can see the commercials already and Pat Robertson and Tony Perkins and the Catholic bishops go on and on about how PBO is the anti-christ and against God, etc…I don’t think folk realize how complicated and ugly this issue is. As I said, this is the only issue I disagree with PBO on and my church mother is the same. This issue has failed in 32 states and only passed legislatively. What is going to happen when people vote on it based on how the prez candidates views are in the general?

I remember when we were watching a show about a gay guy who was beaten up for being gay and she was all, “That’s wrong.” She’s fine with gay people visiting each other in the hospital. But marriage–sign of the apocalypse.

How is six months of “PBO is the anti-christ, against God, harmer of children” can Reagan Dems, independents, church-going poc and the emo-left stand?

To me: this was all about getting gay donors to donate since Wall Street has backed away. That’s fine. But folks need to be prepared for the onslaught of PBO is the evil that is to come. Are people really prepared for that? Dems need to accept dogwhistles more because this announcement, combined with voter suppression, etc is going to a fierce election.

        • Nathkatun7

“The right-wing are going to say that PBO is going to force churches to perform same-sex marriages and that will harm him in November.”

  • MonieTalks

Warning: you will gag at this shit from the Log Cabin Republicans (the same bastards who could not even mention PBO’s name after he signed DADT)…but notice who they sound EXACTLY like:

    Log Cabin Republicans:

(Washington, DC) – Log Cabin Republicans respond to President Barack Obama’s latest evolution on the freedom to marry.

“That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous,” said R. Clarke Cooper, Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director. “Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue, but LGBT Americans are right to be angry that this calculated announcement comes too late to be of any use to the people of North Carolina, or any of the other states that have addressed this issue on his watch. This administration has manipulated LGBT families for political gain as much as anybody, and after his campaign’s ridiculous contortions to deny support for marriage equality this week he does not deserve praise for an announcement that comes a day late and a dollar short.”

Hey, an intelligent question by a radio caller. If equality in gay marriage, why not polyandry, polygamy…..there are.other forms of marriage? Told you, others will follow suit.

    • Nathkatun7

With all due respect, I don’t think that is a very serious question aimed at dealing with the fundamental rights of gay people. Again as a non-believer I could say something about polygamy but its best I leave that alone. I think the President said it best: may be it’s time for Christians (and all religions for that matter) to practice the “Golden rule.”

  • Lisa M

I’m disappointed that POTUS finished “evolving” and placated the gay mafia who like all y’all have said is just going to move the goalposts.

I too am a Christian and as far as I know there is no biblical antecedent for gay marriage which is why I don’t support it personally.

From a policy perspective, I really don’t care but I don’t consider marriage as a civil right. But then I don’t think about it much in general.

Just watch, the gays are going to start demanding that all the churches perform SSMs. They need to be checked on that point.

Can’t wait to see what Chris Matthews is going to say. He and LOD were the only two anchors who felt the President should wait till after the election to fully evolve.

I don’t like it. But hey, I figure he knows what he’s doing.

    • Jeremy

I don’t believe that religious institutions should be forced to accept gay marriages. That is a bridge too far and I don’t see many people including the president will not go for that.

      • Nathkatun7

Religious institutions can never be forced to perform gay marriage period. Only those religious institutions, like some Episcopalians churches, that choose to accept gay marriage, will do so. With all due respect to religious people, marriage is first and foremost a civil institution. Churches perform marriages because the state allows them to do so.I am sure we are all familiar with preachers/priests who invoke the powers granted them by this and that state to declare married couples husbands and wife Ultimately then, certificates, making marriages legal, are issued by the state governments. Churches do not issue marriage certificates. That is why, in my humble opinion, the right to marry whomever you chose to marry is a civil rights issue. People like me who are non-believers are routinely married and issued marriage certificates by the state. I’ve never heard religious people objecting to the right of atheists to get married. While I deeply respect the religious views of people about homosexuality, I really don’t see why religious people feel the need to use government to deny gay people their citizenship rights. As a heterosexual, I sure wouldn’t want the government to deny me the right to mary because I do not subscribe to any organized religion.

        • Miranda

Lisa, brace yourself as folks like us are in the minority any more, but I am willing to weigh things, because I certainly don’t want a Romney leading this place. I do support PBO, just have to take a day off. It will get better.

    • MonieTalks

I detest the gay mafia and their supporters period and it has nothing to do with SSM but everything to do with their delivery…the smugness, disrespect, climate in which they helped create a distraction, a fracturing of the party pre-midtem 2010 and their self anointed “base” of the party claim.

The tone at many of their sites was despicable. I remember of one show at MSNBC, the blond babyfaced bitch was discussing an issue regarding the tax cuts before the midterms and she was asked what could PBO do to make inroads with the base. And instead of listing economic policies, etc, her answer was to end DADT and DOMA.

What fucking “base” was she including in that assessment?

I knew right then these people were full of shit. Prop * revenge was on and poppin. The supposed gay fight (even though it seems LGBT has been hiding out on a large scale all these years during their “fight”) was going to be the noose they hung around this president’s neck.

We could be at .00001% unemployment rate, wars ended, and everything, but because the LGBT rights list has not been checked twice, PBO is a failure and nothing else matters.

Nothing else matters. We have a name for that….narcissism.

      • Camille

They will just end up completely turning off natural allies with their myopic, hateful, selfish, bullying.

I must say that I really like Joe Solmonese. He is very mature, astute, sensible and measured and seems to really get it.

You can also tell that he understands that there are those in the gay community that will mess this whole movement up for them.

The Dan Choi’s and Dan Savage’s will be the bane of the gay movement.

    • TresL

Lisa M, you have expressed my feelings exactly. I don’t know any gay people personally although years ago I worked with at least two. I have to say in recent years the high-profile gay activists have not engendered my support. While I know they are not representative of all gay people, I just don’t like the way they’ve treated PBO and perhaps that alone has influenced my feelings about them and this whole issue. PBO coming out in support of gay marriage does not change my view against it. I can only see the negative impact such as making the RWNJs even crazier, emboldening gay activists to extract more from him and possibly losing the election.

If their are positives, I don’t see them right now.

      • TresL

If “there” are positives, I don’t see them right now.

    • Bri

I feel that he was bullied by his own supporters into speaking now for SSM. For example, comments on TOD. People like BWD who wrote stuff like he was on the “wrong side of history.” They told him to forget about his beliefs, which I really don’t like. I am for SSM, but I don’t like that he was demanded to take a stance on SSM now.

      • Nathkatun7

Personally, I don’t think people like BWD had any thing to do with the President’s decision. I think once his VP voiced his support, the President had no choice but to say something now instead of waiting for a more opportune time. My number one goal is to ensure that the President is re-elected. I think it’s time for us to move-on from this issue which is causing unnecessary divisiveness.

  • Admiral_Komack

Clear the way, I am coming to…THE BAD LOUNGE!

I have had it with the emoprogs.
If you are so disappointed with President Obama, fine
If you do not want to vote for President Obama because your fee-fees are hurt, fine.
Keep your opinions to yourself, and vote for Willard Romney.
    Let Willard fuck you over.
Because he’s MUCH better than President Obama, right, emoprogs?
All emoprogs hail the Romney Presidency, AKA the BOHICA Presidency…and be prepared to be ignored…because Willard is NOT into you.
Oh, and emoprogs, don’t ask me for money…but you can kiss my ass…losers.

    • MsKitty

      I’ll bring the Doritos.

(No Melissa. He doesn’t watch cable news trash)

    Melissa Harris-Perry ‏ @MHarrisPerry

It’s like POTUS has been watching @MHPshow! Evolution complete.

    • Camille

She is so full of shit. Fuck off Melissa.

    • Miranda

      *facepalm*

    • Daltex82

She has been sliding off my radar for some time but it’s official now she can go kick rocks.

    • Admiral_Komack

No, you blithering idiot, he doesn’t watch your stupid show.
      I thank God I don’t watch it.

  • http://themidnightsolution.blogspot.com LTMidnight

    Listen up guys,

I know some of you are pissed because you felt President Obama gave in to the pressure of the far left.

I just remember being pissed when it seemed he gave in to the pressure from Donald Trump and the birthers to release his long form birth certificate, only to see him beat Trump and the birther upside the head with it at last year’s WHite House Correspondents Dinner.

In my opinion, he’s setting himself up to be able to say at the Democratic Convention “You may not agree with me, but at least I have a core and you know where I stand unlike my opponent”. The same tactic Bush used against Kerry in 2004.

Also this now pushes, Romney to make a firm stand either FOR or AGAINST Marriage Equality.

    • Camille

      I completely agree.

      As intensely resentful as I feel towards many of these assholes—– especially sideline wannabe inconsequential peons like BWD who all felt the need to put on their on little shows to impress and convince the bully crowd of self-loathing log cabin gays just how down with gay people they really are unlike those other blacks;

      Never ever discount this:

Every single time people have tried to pressure, hurt or trap this President with one of these sensitive wedge issues, it has ALWAYS boomeranged and hurt the attackers instead.

These attempts to force President Obama’s hand always end up giving this great and thoughtful man one more opportunity to shine and frame the issue in such a way that his attackers end up losing.

He is an authentic, genuine, intelligent, good and empathetic man —-and all things will always work together for him.

I take much pleasure however in the knowledge that with his clear and unambiguous words today, the President has permanently snatched away the talking points, the dangled carrots, another trumped up excuse for hating and attacking him from the various mischief makers:

The hateful republicans like Chris Christie who always insisted that he “and the President hold the exact same views on gay marriage” (ha!), the gay crowd who talk up the Clintons —who gave them DADT and DOMA— as their heroes but fault President Obama for not cleaning up and reversing their patron saints mess fast enough and not “speaking aloud his support for gay marriage” (ha!) and on and on and on.

Yes, they will still come up with their many excuses to keep hating like why didn’t he say it sooner and paint the White House in rainbow colors to really prove he means it, and why hasn’t he personally gone to North Carolina and rounded and locked up every voter who voted in favor of the amendment yesterday.

The difference now is that he has essentially taken away yet another dangled reason people like Grenwald, Aravosis, Sarota, Savage, Maddow, Jon Stewart, etc. hide behind and use to great effect to validate their disdain and outright hate for him.

If they haven’t been already, many of these attackers will now be exposed for what they really are.

They can no longer hide behind this sensitive issue which the President has essentially with this interview—- with all the attendant negative political ramifications—-shown unquestionable support and good faith, taking a huge risk re: his re-election by coming out publicly in support.

      Checkmate.

      • Aquagranny911

        Brava, Brava, Brava Excellent comment!

  • Jeremy

Like I said I am so tired of talking about gay marriage. This will not influence this election and like PPP polling tweeted polls show that majority of Americans believed that Obama was already for gay marriage and the polls show that Obama is still in good standing. I will admit that I was wrong that this might hurt in some swing states like NC because this election is more than that.

I just want some on the left to drop this subject because America does not view gay marriage as issue number 1.

    • Ebogan63

I agree with you, but as some have said, expect alot more of this b.s. in the comming months, unfortunately.

    • Aquagranny911

I am so with you on this. I hate this “one issue” BS but in the long run I don’t think it will hurt PBO much & as far as I’m concerned the gay activists “can go piss in a jar or shit in a bucket” as my Irish friend would say. Mostly they are useless except for flapping their mouths.

    • Nathankatun7

Here here! The President has stated his views that he thinks gay people should be married. Presidents have no power to mandate gay marriage in all the 50 states. Only the Congress and the judicially (meaning the U.S. Supreme Court) can do that. Time to focus on President Obama’s re-election and electing Democratic majorities in the Senate and the House of Rep.

  • rikyrah

    FUCK YOU, you racist muthafucka.

hell no…ain’t nobody gonna forget your Prop8 racist ass shyt:

    …………………………………

    Dan Savage is unsatisfied:

So Barack Obama is for marriage equality. Personally. Because he knows some monogamous same-sex couples who are raising children. (Non-monogamous couples can’t get legally married, of course, unless they’re straight.) But the president also supports the “concept” of states—states like, say, North Carolina, which yesterday banned any recognition of same-sex relationships in reality, not in concept—”decding the issue on their own.” So the president supports same-sex marriage but he believes that states should be able to ban same-sex marriages

    http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/

    • Ebogan63

These dumbshit MF’s have to understand, it has always been a STATE MATTER, if you want the federal gov’t to get rid of these types of laws, PASS IT THROUGH FUCKING CONGRESS, YOU LAZY MF’S!

    • Admiral_Komack

      FUCK DAN SAVAGE.

    • MonieTalks

And you know what is so fucked up right now.

I can guaranttee that when the anti-SSM and religious right crowd unleashes their attack ads, you can believe that Dan Savage’s tasteless ass rant, in which he called students “pansie” as they walked out of his shitfest regarding religion will be aired and tied to PBO.

This “it gets better” bully is a phony, selfish POS.

      • Camille

Dan Savage is the biggest asshole bully of all. There is a special place in hell for that muthafuckker.

This guy who is a rabid Hillary Clinton supporter wants you to believe that his attacks on President Obama are solely based on the President not doing enough for gay rights.

        Yeah!

    • itgurl_29

Dan Savage is the embodiment of why the gay rights movement is an epic fail.

      • JojoRaze

Especially when he couldn’t go toe-to-toe with church folks at a college last week and defend his opinion. The fact of the matter is that ssm is considered sinful in most Xian churches. Until the gay rights movement find a way to get over that hurdle with religiously-minded/motivated people, they will fail. All he could say was that Xians should ignore those parts of the Bible that condemn gay marriage. That’s why the gay rights movement stays losing because they can’t overcome that hurdle. Which why I said this was too risky for the president to do because this is really about how people feel in their hearts and minds based on their religious upbringing, which the US is filled with. This is why when ssm is brought up for a vote in the states it always fails. People talk a good game about saying “Gay people have the right to be miserable as straight people by getting married” but when Billy Graham, their pastor and their conscience influenced by their Xian upbringing tugs at them, they will vote against ssm. This is risky because this allows the right wing to paint PBO as an anti-christ figure who is leading the country toward moral degeneration.

  • lamh35

I”m fine with the POTUS doing this, but , here’s what I’m afraid of…the same Catholics, old Reagan Democrats, and some not all, but some AA pastors who let GWB and Karl Rove use them to further their own agendas in ’04.

I hope ALL those young people who will supposedly be energized by the POTUS saying he supports SSM, will actually get up and get to the voting booth , though I suspect that just as they didn’t in NC or CA, they won’t now either, because if SSM equality was as important to them as have been claimed, then they would have been out there when these amendments came up for election, I hope I’m wrong.

BTW, the don’t be surprised that the goal post will be shifted, especially since Like I said earlier today, ALL the people who really truly claimed to need this BETTER have POTUS damn back …PERIOD.

I truly think that this announcement has even the playing field for Robmey. I expect the enthusiam gap that may have happened just because Conservatives hate Robmey will evaporate and there is no longer room to wiggle. We will need to fight for every vote and there is no more room for freak-outs.

Glad he did it, but let’s not be naive and think this is the end of it.

    • Jeremy

Well the PPP poll shows that the electorate already believed that Obama was for gay marriage and he is still ahead by good margins on Romney.

I think the gay marriage issue though an issue is not as big as it was 8 years ago. Also you have a guy like Romney who is a Mormon said he was the left of Kennedy on gay rights and pro abortion and then flipped.

Romney can’t connect with the social conservatives like W could because they felt he was one of them. This topic will eventually end and we will get back to the economy and other issues which will drive this election.

  • Miranda

    Evening thread is up!

  • JojoRaze

I’m glad I wasn’t online since yesterday. I feel some kind of way about PBO’s support for gay marriage. I think he gives away the election because, despite what the polls say, people are not comfortable with ssm and vote accordingly in the privacy of the voting booth. I’m morally against the idea, but understand why in a democracy this is acceptable. But, if given the choice to vote on it, I won’t. Two: this changes nothing in the real world. The federal government can’t do anything about ssm other than executive orders which PBO has done, and any time its brought up for a vote in the states it loses. Three: this riles up the right-wing who will back Romney more forcefully now. Four: I’m sad that despite PBO’s actions showing he supported lgbt rights, emoprogs etc wanted him to say four words that will harm his election. Sigh.

    • Ebogan63

The economy and other factors than this will hinge on whether he wins or not, not gay marriage

      • Camille

        Exactly.

    • Bri

This, “Three: this riles up the right-wing who will back Romney more forcefully now” has me worried. Many right-wingers were going to sit out in the fall, now they are about to run to the booths in November. Another thing that has me worried is Catholics. Especially states with a huge populated Catholic population, like Pennsylvania. I am praying that POTUS still wins in November.

    • Jeremy

I don’t think he gave away the election. It’s only May and the economy will be the central issue. I don’t believe that people will vote based on one issue when PPP even said that majority of Americans thought he already supported it.

  • crazycanuck

These people urg, from an LGTB blog

“a day late to help those in North Carolina and four years behind Dick Cheney…I guess better late than never…Agree though that marriage isn’t our most pressing issue. ENDA is and he’s refused to sign an executive order granting it….when Dems controlled the House and Senate- they didn’t bring it up and as long as Repubs controll any branch- it will die on the vine…..”

    • Camille

      Oh fuck them. Seriously.

  • Admiral_Komack

    Has BWD claimed credit yet?

    • crazycanuck

Don’t know, but apparently people are giving her credit

      • Camille

        Are you serious?!

        • crazycanuck

yup. look further down, Hey thanks for responding to my post about career change, appreciate the feedback

      • Bri

People pump her up, which is why she goes on these rants.

  • BoomerGal

Log Cabin Republicans say they’re still unsatisfied because his announcement was ill timed. It came while they are still in mourning over the passing of Amendment One. Whatever. See! IT DOESN’T MATTER! Gay, straight, blind, cripple or crazy, THEY WANT THAT NIGGA OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE!!
