Democratic Congressman Wants Federal Investigation Into ALEC-Backed Laws

Grijalva cites a recent article in The American Prospect that links ALEC to bills in Utah claiming that federal ownership of Forest Service lands violates state sovereignty, and seeking to expand grazing into areas currently off-limits. Grijalva also notes that Bundy spoke at a committee hearing in March 2013 on an ALEC-backed bill in Nevada that dealt with the transfer of federal lands to state control.

    • Alma98

Truth be told they’re not ALEC backed laws. They are laws that ALEC drafted and teapublicans put instituted.

More: Oligarchs United States of America The Telegraph

Major Study Finds The US Is An Oligarchy
    Zachary Davies Boren, The Telegraph
    Apr. 16, 2014, 8:16 AM

The U.S. government does not represent the interests of the majority of the country’s citizens, but is instead ruled by those of the rich and powerful, a new study from Princeton and Northwestern Universities has concluded.

The report, “Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups, and Average Citizens,” used extensive policy data collected between 1981 and 2002 to empirically determine the state of the U.S. political system.

After sifting through nearly 1,800 U.S. policies enacted in that period and comparing them to the expressed preferences of average Americans (50th percentile of income), affluent Americans (90th percentile), and large special interests groups, researchers concluded that the U.S. is dominated by its economic elite.

The peer-reviewed study, which will be taught at these universities in September, says: “The central point that emerges from our research is that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on US government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence.”

Researchers concluded that U.S. government policies rarely align with the the preferences of the majority of Americans, but do favour special interests and lobbying organizations: “When a majority of citizens disagrees with economic elites and/or with organized interests, they generally lose. Moreover, because of the strong status quo bias built into the US political system, even when fairly large majorities of Americans favour policy change, they generally do not get it.”

    — — – Muslim groups and civil liberties advocates applauded the decision by New York Police Department officials to disband a controversial unit that tracked the daily lives of Muslims as part of efforts to detect terror threats, but said there were concerns about whether other problematic practices remained in place.

    – –WHA’????? – ->The Demographics Unit, conceived with the help of a CIA agent working with the NYPD, assembled databases on where Muslims lived, shopped, worked and prayed. Plainclothes officers infiltrated Muslim student groups, put informants in mosques, monitored sermons and catalogued Muslims in New York who adopted new, Americanized surnames. NYPD spokesman Stephen Davis confirmed Tuesday that detectives assigned to the unit had been transferred to other duties within the department’s Intelligence Division.

Linda Sarsour, the executive director of the Arab American
Association of New York, said she was among a group of advocates at a private meeting last week with police at which the department’s new intelligence chief, John Miller, first indicated the unit — renamed the Zone Assessment Unit — wasn’t viable. She applauded the decision but said there’s still concern about the police use of informants to infiltrate mosques without specific evidence of crime.

I take back my congratulations to the two Towson students that won a national debate tournament. For one thing, I dont think there was any debating going on, just some ignorant shouting all off topic where the loudest bombastic bullshit won. Something tells me hipster academic judges think this shit is sooooo cute like an exhibit at a zoo of baby hyenas so they’re rewarding this mess.
Does Traditional College Debate Reinforce White Privilege?
Minority participants aren’t just debating resolutions—they’re challenging the terms of the debate itself.
On March 24, 2014 at the Cross Examination Debate Association (CEDA) Championships at Indiana University, two Towson University students, Ameena Ruffin and Korey Johnson, became the first African-American women to win a national college debate tournament, for which the resolution asked whether the U.S. president’s war powers should be restricted. Rather than address the resolution straight on, Ruffin and Johnson, along with other teams of African-Americans, attacked its premise. The more pressing issue, they argued, is how the U.S. government is at war with poor black communities.

In the final round, Ruffin and Johnson squared off against Rashid Campbell and George Lee from the University of Oklahoma, two highly accomplished African-American debaters with distinctive dreadlocks and dashikis. Over four hours, the two teams engaged in a heated discussion of concepts like “nigga authenticity” and performed hip-hop and spoken-word poetry in the traditional timed format. At one point during Lee’s rebuttal, the clock ran out but he refused to yield the floor. “Fuck the time!” he yelled. His partner Campbell, who won the top speaker award at the National Debate Tournament two weeks later, had been unfairly targeted by the police at the debate venue just days before, and cited this personal trauma as evidence for his case against the government’s treatment of poor African-Americans.Related Story

This year wasn’t the first time this had happened. In the 2013 championship, two men from Emporia State University, Ryan Walsh and Elijah Smith, employed a similar style and became the first African-Americans to win two national debate tournaments. Many of their arguments, based on personal memoir and rap music, completely ignored the stated resolution, and instead asserted that the framework of collegiate debate has historically privileged straight, white, middle-class students.

Tournament participants from all backgrounds say they have found some of these debate strategies offensive. Even so, the new style has received mainstream acceptance, sympathy, and awards.

Maybe this new style of debate is part of why the white sponsor had a problem with the team. I’m not talking about the debate coach, but his wife, who was the sponsor or chairperson or whoever.

Lawmakers: Kansas shootings show need for hate crime report
By Mario Trujillo April 16, 2014, 02:57 pm

Two Democratic lawmakers are seeking to examine the role the Internet and airwaves play in encouraging hate crime.

Sen. Ed Markey (Mass.) and Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) said Wednesday the recent shooting that killed three people at Jewish centers in Kansas brings to light the damage hate crimes can cause.

Their legislation would commission an updated report on the role the Internet, radio, TV and electronic media have in the promotion of violent acts and hate crime in the United States.

Wasn’t this the same state where the governor signed a bill banning ANY municipality in the state from increasing the minimum wage or implementing sick leave because it would drive up prices for consumers? But I guess its ok to charge these same citizens for installing panels to help them save money?
Oklahoma Will Charge Customers Who Install Their Own Solar Panels

A bill that would allow regulated electric utilities to impose a surcharge on customers who install rooftop solar panels or small wind turbines passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives on Monday.
by Paul Monies Published: April 15, 2014

Utility customers who want to install rooftop solar panels or small wind turbines could face extra charges on their bills after legislation passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives on Monday.

Senate Bill 1456 passed 83-5 after no debate in the House. It passed the Senate last month and now heads to Gov. Mary Fallin for her approval.

The bill was supported by the state’s major electric utilities, but drew opposition from solar advocates, environmentalists and others. It sets up a process at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission to establish a separate customer class and monthly surcharge for distributed generation such as rooftop solar or small wind turbines.

They’re going to fight this with everything they have. They’ll drag out every lawn jockey they can get to push back on the hard truth which is simply this: The GOP has used White racial resentment as a political tool for decades and the use of that tool spiked with the election of this country’s first Black President. They can yell “stop playing the race card!” all they want but Black folks have observed these 2520s behavior towards this President and his family and we are done with the bullshit…done. So shed all the butthurt tears you want Kathleen… Black folks are fresh out of fucks to give.

Recently, I had a conversation with a white friend of mine. We’ve done cultural competency trainings together when we worked at the same agency. (yeah, I know). Bill O’Reilly is such a useless twit…

Bill O’Reilly Tries to Enlist Kentucky’s Basketball Coach in Bashing Blacks

The Fox News host went on another racially charged rant and tried to get John Calipari to help, but even that was too much for this ethically challenged coach.Hey Fox News, what sterling addition to the public discourse did you offer last night? Not much, just one of college basketball’s most corrupt coaches and cable’s most notorious race-baiters, chillin’ and waxin’ poetic about hip-hop.

You guessed it. It’s Bill O’Reilly, raging against the Devil’s music. And if this tune sounds familiar, it’s probably because he has routinely pointed a crooked finger at “gangsta rap” and bellowed, “J’accuse!”.

Sometimes he even drops the pretense of being anything but a shameless bigot, like in 2007, when O’Reilly was chatting on his radio show about his David Livingstone-esque journey into the deepest, darkest reaches of uptown Manhattan at Sylvia’s Soul Food with the Rev. Al Sharpton, saying: “I couldn’t get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia’s restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. It was exactly the same, even though it’s run by blacks [and has a] primarily black patronship. There wasn’t one person in Sylvia’s who was screaming, ‘M-Fer, I want more iced tea!’” And adding, “It was like going into an Italian restaurant in an all-white suburb in the sense of people [who] were sitting there, and they were ordering and having fun. And there wasn’t any kind of craziness at all.

I feel you, Billy! It’s downright nutty that the blackitty, black blacks in Harlem,Harlem, mind you, are just like the normals. And by “normal” of course, I (or rather, you) mean real Americans, aka white people.

The Secret Recordings of Susana Martinez

The New Mexico governor is caught on tape denigrating teachers and cursing her opponent.
Recordings published by Mother Jones show New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez has a penchant for punishing political opponents.
By David Catanese April 16, 2014

If there is an eventual vice presidential vetting of Gov. Susana Martinez, R-N.M., it will begin here.

The nation’s first female Hispanic governor has been lauded as a rising Republican star, burnishing a unique profile fit for a national ticket.

But secret recordings obtained by the liberal magazine Mother Jones threaten to blemish her image before it’s even fully established.

In candid conversations with her closest political aides that were published Wednesday, Martinez dubs her 2010 Democratic opponent “that little bitch,” complains that teachers “already don’t work … 2 1/2 months out of the year” and exhibits a penchant for punishing political opponents similar to the merciless retribution that landed Gov. Chris Christie’s administration in hot water.

Wisconsin passes law to curb private custody transfers of children

[….] The Wisconsin law, signed Wednesday by Republican Gov. Scott Walker, makes it illegal for anyone not licensed by the state to advertise a child over age one for adoption or any other custody transfer, both in print and online. Parents who want to transfer custody of a child to someone other than a relative must seek permission from a judge. Violators face up to nine months in jail or up to $10,000 in fines.

“The Reuters reports outlined massive pratfalls in current law that
allowed children to be advertised on social networks on the Internet,” said Republican state Rep. Joel Kleefisch, who sponsored the Wisconsin legislation. “With virtually no oversight, children could literally be traded from home to home. In Wisconsin, that is now against the law. Hopefully citizens of the country will follow our lead.”

Ohio, Colorado and Florida also have introduced legislation aimed at protecting children from re-homing.[….]

@esglaude: Can we have a serious discussion about not voting in the 2016 presidential election?

@esglaude: Shift our focus to congressional, state, and local elections, and to grassroots organizing that extends beyond election cycle.

@esglaude: We have to do something to short-circuit the current political game. Something dramatic has to happen.

@esglaude: I mean a political discussion about not voting. One that can’t be ended by the specious claim that “people died for the vote”

This State Will Offer Free College Tuition To High School Graduates

On Tuesday, Tennessee lawmakers passed a bill that will make tuition free for all high school graduates who go to a two-year college. It now heads to Gov. Bill Haslam (R)’s desk, who has made it a signature part of his campaign to improve the state’s graduation rates from 32 percent to 55 percent by 2025. Beyond graduating from high school, students who participate in the Tennessee Promise program will have to maintain a 2.0 grade point average, attend mandatory meetings, work with a mentor, and do community service.

After they graduate two-year colleges, they can enroll in a four-year school as juniors. The program, which is expected to cost about $34 million a year, will be paid for using $300 million in excess lottery reserve funds and by creating a $47 million endowment.[….] Florida, Mississippi, and Oregon are considering similar plans.[….]

The report to IAEA member states also confirms that Iran is on track to convert the other half of its stockpile of uranium enriched to 20% purity into oxide for reactor fuel.[….] In exchange for Iran’s scaling back its nuclear capabilities, the six powers — the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany — agreed to release $4.2 billion in impounded Iranian oil revenue over the six-month period of the moratorium.[….]

Eric Cantor Torches Immigration Reform After Call With Obama

    Sahil Kapur – April 16, 2014, 5:30 PM EDT

    Updated 6:00 P.M. EST

On Wednesday, Eric Cantor strongly suggested immigration reform won’t come up in the House of Representatives after he received a phone call from President Barack Obama.

“House Republicans do not support Senate Democrats’ immigration bill and amnesty efforts, and it will not be considered in the House,” the Republican majority leader said in a statement after the call. He accused the president of engaging in “partisan messaging” and offered no indication that the House intends to act on the issue. His full statement is below.

Iowa Supreme Court Preserves Voting Rights For Some Former Offenders

A case before the Iowa Supreme Court this week that could have disenfranchised as many as 50,000 Iowa voters instead opened the door to potential future expansions of the franchise. In a 5-1 splintered opinion, the court ruled that the state constitution presumptively does not bar any individuals convicted of misdemeanor offenses from voting, and may even allow some with felony convictions to vote.[….]

In remarks calling for an end to felon disenfranchisement, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder directly took on Brandstad’s policy, saying, “That’s moving backwards – not forward. It is unwise, it is unjust, and it is not in keeping with our democratic values. These laws deserve to be not only reconsidered, but repealed.”

    by Matt Wilstein | 4:04 pm, April 16th, 2014AUDIO465

CNN’s Don Lemon opened his appearance onLaura Ingraham‘s radio show Wednesday by telling the conservative host that he had to go to an Al Sharpton meeting first “to make sure I could talk to you.”

That joke got a good laugh out of Ingraham, who commended Lemon for having a sense of humor about himself and saying, “If you’re going to do politics, have fun with politics.” Even if you don’t agree with the person you’re talking to, Ingraham said it’s best to “laugh and have fun.”

“Just because you disagree with me doesn’t mean your my enemy,” Lemon told Ingraham. “If you disagree with someone, you have to try to work with them even more so, because why do you want to preach to the choir all the time?”

Josh Romney has 20 million reasons to write a bitter anger tweet at mean ole Harry Reid

…The past two presidential cycles have seen a change in 1st runner-up temperament; possibly because both of the rich white guys who lost, lost to a black dude. John McCain immediately went back to being the least popular senator in America, but he still shows up on every Sunday morning show, every Sunday pretending that he is president and that he didn’t give America a raging case of the Sarah Palin STDs.

Mitt Romney sulked around his beach house compound – yelling at the stoners to get off of his gosh-darned sand – for a spell before coming out and saying that, sure, Barack Obama may have beaten him, but Barrack isn’t half the man that dreamy Vladamir Putin is. Shirtless and on a horse? Hubba hubba.

On the other hand , Mitt’s wife, perpetual bitter pill Ann Romney, has taken every opportunity to purse her lips and point out that America had a chance to mount Mitt like he was a fancy dancing horse and ride him to prosperity just like she did, but noooooo, America chose poorly and now it must sleep in the bed with the low thread-count sheets that it made. When ‘Liking’ a Brand Online Voids the Right to Sue

General Mills, the maker of iconic cereals like Cheerios and Chex as well as brands like Bisquick and Betty Crocker, has quietly added language to its website to alert consumers that they give up their right to sue the company if they download coupons, “join” it in online communities like Facebook, enter a company-sponsored sweepstakes or contest or interact with it in a variety of other ways.

Instead, anyone who has received anything that could be construed as a benefit and who then has a dispute with the company over its products will have to use informal negotiation via email or go through arbitration to seek relief, according to the new terms posted on its site.

In language added on Tuesday after The New York Times contacted it about the changes, General Mills seemed to go even further, suggesting that buying its products would bind consumers to those terms.

“We’ve updated our Privacy Policy,” the company wrote in a thin, gray bar across the top of its home page. “Please note we also have new Legal Terms which require all disputes related to the purchase or use of any General Mills product or service to be resolved through binding arbitration.”

The change in legal terms, which occurred shortly after a judge refused to dismiss a case brought against the company by consumers in California, made General Mills one of the first, if not the first, major food companies to seek to impose what legal experts call “forced arbitration” on consumers.

SCOTUS will hear challenge to Ohio law banning campaign lies
    UPDATED 04/16/14 07:20 PM

Are false statements about political candidates a criminal offense? According to an Ohio law which is the subject of an upcoming Supreme Court case, the answer is “yes.”

The Supreme Court will consider a challenge next week to an Ohio law that prohibits an individual or group from knowingly or recklessly making false statements in political campaigns. The case, Susan B. Anthony List v. Driehaus, was filed last August after conservative anti-abortion group the Susan B. Anthony List attempted to launch a billboard campaign in 2010 against former Rep. Steve Driehaus, a Democrat, who ended up losing his re-election bid.

The billboard would have claimed that Driehaus supported taxpayer-funded abortions because of his support for the Affordable Care Act. Driehaus appealed to the Ohio Elections Commission, invoking the Ohio law that barred false campaign statements, and the advertising company that owned the billboard space refused to rent it to the Susan B. Anthony List.

The Susan B. Anthony List then challenged the state law, but a federal judgedismissed the challenge in 2011 because “the billboards were never erected and the Ohio Election Commission never made a final ruling on whether they may have violated the law,” according to The Cincinnati Enquirer.

accident, as Pistorius claims. Unlike murder trials in the United States and most modern judicial systems, South Africa does not have trials decided by jurors because it was nearly impossible to find jurors not influenced by the racial effects of apartheid.

Masipa has had an impressive career. Her tough background, which The Root culled from global news reports, lends credence to court watchers’ speculation that she will not be influenced by the defendant’s emotional breakdowns or the crying and vomiting in court. Here are seven things to know about the judge:

One night I stayed up to watch the trial. I knew nothing of Judge Masipa, but I was impressed by her calm, firm demeanor. She listened quick closely, with no sign of being moved by his histrionics. His passive-aggressive invocation of “milady” I’m sure was not lost on her.

She is quite impressive. Nelson Mandela’s influence lives on. “Thokozile Matilda Masipa is a former social worker turned journalist turned lawyer turned superior court judge. She’s “eloquent” and highly respected by her peers, but perpetrators should tread lightly.”

    POU FAM♥ – – – – -He IS — -A — – -CLASS ACT♥: – – — -Very nice – – – – —B.B. King apologizes for St. Louis concert gone bad – –

    — —Blues guitarist B.B. King wants his St. Louis fans to give him another chance after an erratic performance led to a stream of audience catcalls and early departures.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer issued a public apology on Tuesday for what his publicists called “a bad night for one of America’s living blues legends.”

The written statement says King, 88, and his band had returned from a four-week break before the April 4 show at the Peabody Opera House. The band drove straight to eastern Missouri from Las Vegas, a 24-hour, 1,600-mile (2,575-kilometer) trip each way. And King missed his daily dosage of diabetes medicine, which elevated his blood sugar.

“The combination of the rigors of the very long drive and high blood sugar due to his medication error resulted in a performance that did not match Mr. King’s usual standard of excellence,” reads the statement, which was issued on behalf of King by the St. Louis venue. “Mr. King apologizes and humbly asks for the understanding of his fans.”
