Federal review to keep Mississippi voter ID law on hold for election
Emily Le Coz Reuters
9:19 a.m. CDT, October 3, 2012
TUPELO, Mississippi (Reuters) – Mississippi’s controversial new law requiring voters to show photo identification at the polls will not be in effect for the November general election while federal officials review whether the measure is discriminatory, the state said on Tuesday.
It was the second setback for voter ID laws in a single day, coming on the heels of a judge in Pennsylvania ordering officials there to delay implementing a photo ID requirement until after the November 6 election.
Voters in Mississippi approved a voter ID ballot initiative by a wide margin last November.
But as part of the implementation, the state provided insufficient evidence for the U.S. Department of Justice to determine whether the new law would violate the Voting Rights Act, the agency’s voting section chief T. Christian Herren Jr. said in a letter on Monday.
I hope all POUers have celebrated the “GOOD NEWS” in Pennsylvania. We finally ran across judges that had some sense!! The law will probably still go into affect, but NOT BEFORE NOVEMBER 6th!!!
MOVING FORWARD!!! Keepin’ our eyes on the prize!!
If anyone is close to PA and wants to come to help us to Get Out The Vote (GOTV) we would love to have your help!!!
Hey stranger! You keeping busy helping to save the free world from Mittens? Yes the Pennsylvania ruling had me jumping up and down.

Is it odd that I started laughing like Vincent Price when I saw this video. Four years ago, I almost shot my T.V. seeing stuff like this. Now, I’m just full of jovial pity. Four years of hate has aged them.
They’re no different than the racist white mobs that harassed the “Little Rock Nine” and Ruby Bridges.

Damn so the all Black cast of Steel Magnolias is supposed to premiere this Sunday, but the film writer or something is suing Lifetime and trying to halt the premiere until she is compensated. I hope it doesn’t stop the premiere since I’ve really been looking forward to it!
It’s interesting that the film person is suing now. The movie’s been in the can since forever and it’ was filme a while back too. I’m betta somebody told her that the movie is being really anticipated and Lifetime and urban outlets have been promoting it big time. So homegirl wants to get paid! That’s her right, but I sure hope it doesn’ t mess up the premiere. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/10/01/steel-magnolias-lifetime-lawsuit_n_1931122.html

So this what has happened to Lark Voorhies (aka Lisa Turtle)…
‘Saved By the Bell’ star Lark Voorhies has bipolar disorder, according to her mother
Last spring, Lark Voorhies appeared on omg!’s series “The Yo Show” (watch the episode below) to reminisce about her days on the ’90s Saturday-morning sitcom “Saved By the Bell.” She looked drastically different from how we remembered little Lisa Turtle – her hair was dyed red and she had on heavy makeup – starting rumors of all sorts. Sparked by that appearance, People magazine conducted a series of interviews with the actress, and in their new issue they report on Lark’s “sad spiral,” which the actress’ mother attributes to mental illness.
People reports that during a recent photo shoot with the 38-year-old actress, her “once-sparkling brown eyes” were “disturbingly vacant.” Lark kept a “near-constant dialogue – by turns mournful, frenetic, and angry – with unseen figures,” and struggled “to focus for even brief moments.” Although Lark denied to the magazine that she suffers from mental illness – the devout Jehovah’s Witness answered the question by saying, “Oh no. We’re alive in a major time of all-in-all prophecy” – her mother, who lives with her and was also interviewed for the story, said the former child star has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, for which she has been prescribed medication.
“I care deeply about my daughter and I want her to resume her life,” her mother, Tricia, told People. However, she noted that finding the right treatment – and getting Lark’s cooperation in following through with it – has been “frustrating.”

Romney Campaign Confirms He Would End Obama’s DREAM Directive
Mitt Romney tried to moderate his immigration positions on Monday before tonight’s debate in Colorado when he said he would not take away the temporary visas from undocumented immigrants who benefit from Obama’s deferred action policy. “I’m not going to take something that they’ve purchased,” he told The Denver Post. He added that before those two-year visas expire, “we will have the full immigration reform plan that I’ve proposed,” although he gave no details about his immigration plan.
Today, his campaign confirmed to the New York Times that Romney would end the program to grant deportation deferrals to young undocumented immigrants who qualify:

Court Requires Disabled Rape Victim To Prove She Resisted, Calls For Evidence Of ‘Biting, Kicking, Scratching’
In a 4-3 ruling Tuesday afternoon, the Connecticut State Supreme Court overturned the sexual assault conviction of a man who had sex with a woman who “has severe cerebral palsy, has the intellectual functional equivalent of a 3-year-old and cannot verbally communicate.” The Court held that, because Connecticut statutes define physical incapacity for the purpose of sexual assault as “unconscious or for any other reason. . . physically unable to communicate unwillingness to an act,” the defendant could not be convicted if there was any chance that the victim could have communicated her lack of consent. Since the victim in this case was capable of “biting, kicking, scratching, screeching, groaning or gesturing,” the Court ruled that that victim could have communicated lack of consent despite her serious mental deficiencies:

Claire McCaskill raises nearly $6 million in the third quarter
Posted by Sean Sullivan on October 3, 2012
Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) raised a whopping $5.8 million dollars during the third quarter, a huge haul that is more than double what she brought in during the previous three-month period.
McCaskill’s impressive number adds to the woes of embattled Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), who has struggled to raise money in his bid against the first-term Democrat. Akin has not released his third quarter total.

Michelle Obama, Jill Biden announce ‘Educating the Educator’ to help teachers, military kids
…A new initiative being launched Wednesday by first lady Michelle Obama and the vice president’s wife, Jill Biden, is designed to better prepare educators instructing military-connected children. “Operation: Educate the Educator” already has a commitment from more than 100 colleges offering teaching degrees.
The Obama administration has partnered with the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the Military Child Education Coalition to help military children as they face social, emotional and learning challenges in the classroom while having an active-duty parent.
‘American Idol’s’ South Africa counterpart crowns first black winner

Nearly two decades after the end of apartheid, South Africa’s black majority has conquered the country’s halls of power. But until this week, they had yet to rise to the peak of pop Idoldom.
After eight seasons of white and mixed-race winners, a singing show in South Africa has crowned a black victor — one who represents almost 80 percent of the country’s population.
Khaya Mthethwa, a gospel singer from Durban, beat out Melissa Allison Monday to win Idols South Africa, an American Idol-esque singing competition.
Commentary: Billionaire Koch brothers try to buy Florida’s courts
Carl Hiaasen | The Miami Herald
The new stealth campaign against three Florida Supreme Court justices is being backed by those meddling right-wing billionaires from Wichita, Charles and David Koch.
They couldn’t care less about Florida, but they love to throw their money around.
Last week they uncorked the first of a series of commercials from their political action committee, Americans for Prosperity. The targets are Justices R. Fred Lewis, Barbara Pariente and Peggy Quince.
They were three of the five-vote majority that in 2010 knocked down a half-baked amendment slapped together by state lawmakers seeking to nullify the federal Affordable Health Care Act.
More reason for people to care about the choices down ballot. Look at all the law suits we’re forced to bring against the goopers. It’s a BFD that the judges be a least neutral.

“There’s no institutional racism in the Republican party. Show me a fact that shows it exists. I understand that’s a perception but it’s wrong, and I discount the notion entirely. I’ve heard our leadership condemn racism whenever it arises, but let’s stop holding the Republican Party hostage for past wrongs. Let’s talk about present day to the extent where we can build bridges and find common ground.
“Black women need to know Mitt Romney had a record of diversity in his cabinet with women and minorities when he was Governor of Massachusetts. He worked with faith leaders to bring down crime. He almost closed the educational gap of Black students using choice as a model. He’s got pro-growth policies that are going to put Black small business owners who have been devastated in this economy. If what the government is doing right now isn’t working, we have to come up with another solution. If you don’t agree with Governor Romney’s policies, then what about President Obama’s do you agree with?”

Liar! Liar! Jeans on Fire! Romney and The Other
Written by Reverend William E. Alberts Posted on July 27 – 29, 2012
Mitt Romney’s very presence in “one of Boston’s poorest neighborhoods,” as The Boston Globe story states, was met with “about 60 demonstrators. . . Some held signs that read, ‘Hey, Willard, are you lost?’” And Democratic Boston City Councilor Tito Jackson provided a response to the question: “’I’m very happy that former governor Romney found his way here, but you know what? . . . He didn’t find himself in this community that often’ as governor, Jackson said.” [....]
Just six months into office, on Bunker Hill Day, in an empty Statehouse, “Governor Romney,” as reported by The Boston Globe, “eliminated the State Office of Affirmative Action and retooled the framework that forces state agencies to comply with hiring goals for racial minorities, physically disabled people, and veterans. Critics,” the story continued, “. . . complain that Romney’s changes strip minorities of guarantees of equal access to state government jobs.”[....]
Longtime Boston political and communication strategist Joyce Ferriabough reveals additional context regarding the people whose “families” and their “dreams” Mitt Romney really cared about as governor. “First of all, the Weld administration, their cabinet, was one of the most diverse. He had women in very high positions in his administration and people of color. . . . Romney,” she continued, “I can’t remember one person of color he had in a high-ranking position in his administration.”[....]

Romney had been an informal adviser, fund-raiser and campaign surrogate for McCain since dropping out of the G.O.P. race seven months earlier. Well before the meltdown of the markets that summer, the former Massachusetts governor and Bain Capital C.E.O. had emphasized his vast experience in the private sector. As he told one campaign audience in Sarasota, Fla., in January 2008: “I will not need briefings on how the economy works. I know how it works. I’ve been there.”
That day in the Hilton conference room, however, Romney did not distinguish himself as McCain struggled to decide what course he should recommend in Washington. Holtz-Eakin recalls “nothing specifically” that Romney had to offer. The other McCain senior staff member is more emphatic: “The reality is he didn’t take command. He wasn’t a Marshall-type figure who conveyed an understanding of both business and politics. But the truth is, no one else had any clue what to do, either.” Then he added, “There wasn’t a single person in the room, including Romney, who had any specific policy recommendation.”
Does. not. surprise. me. one. bit. A bunch of people in the Village are extremely overrated, and Mediocre Mitt is definitely one of them. His runningmate is another. Thx for the great link!

Who are these entitled people stocking up on free gas, barbeques, and other freebies? They think they are entitled to food and gadgets…. The GOP long-serving pimps are handing out gifts for votes….
In Search of Votes, Billionaire-Backed Anti-Obama Groups Distribute Expensive Gifts
…Americans for Prosperity (AFP), the nonprofit financed by David Koch and other wealthy Republican businessmen, has spent some $31 million on anti-Obama ads since April. The group recently opened 98 Get-Out-the-Vote offices, hired some 200 field staffers and has been distributing its state-of-the-art voter-targeting technology on Samsung tablet computers to its volunteers. Now AFP is hoping to win hearts and minds with gifts of free gas.
AFP is hosting events at gas stations across the country to provide gasoline to motorists for the price of $1.84 per gallon. The group is paying for up to fifteen gallons for 100–150 drivers at each station, telling them that the $1.84 price symbolizes the price per a gallon before Obama took office in 2009.
There was a similar situation during the time Harold Washington was running for Mayor of Chicago and the establishment pols lined up against him would hand out turkeys or other giveaways. Folks were told:
Take the turkey – and then pull the lever for Harold!
So I would pull up for that $1.84 gas – then go early vote for President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
“Here is the problem,” Kilmeade said. “That could be true, but we watched President Obama, for three and a half years, I don’t think he’s governed in a racist way at all, and I just think if that was going to be an issue, should have been an issue in 08. ‘Why come out now? That’s another issue. but in terms of does anyone think that the President is more towards one race? I don’t think so.”

But Romney got virtually no sleep Monday night, an aide said, blaming a freight train that passed through a grade crossing near the hotel and blew its horn roughly every hour all through the night. The candidate’s sleep deprivation so worried his staff that the campaign looked into switching hotels. The logistics were ultimately too tough, the aide said, and there was concern about how it would look.
GN
This type of WATB stuff just adds to the case that Romney isn’t fit for office. If he can’t function after one sleepless night earlier in the week, how would he deal with the multiple crises that President Obama has to take on all of the time? If he’s tired, he can go take a nap; I’d love to see that entire Romnyan campaign put to bed.

Ummm…if the freight train passed through a grade crossing, how was it able to blow its horn roughly every hour all through the night. Did it get stalled on the track? If so, was the horn blowing a signal for approaching trains to beware because they were stuck? What caused it to get stuck? Why didn’t anyone help to resolve the situation if they were stuck? Didn’t people hear the horns and come out to investigate? Or maybe there was more there was a caravan of freight trains passing through the grade and that explains why horns were blowing roughly every hour all through the night? What there a party? If so, how many people were there and who counted them as the freight train(s) rolled through.
Yeah, I know….my questions are just about as stupid as his campaign’s idiotic explanation for why he didn’t sleep well last night. I can sum it up in three words: He terrified, okay?

– - – - -Mitt Romney yesterday floated a proposal to cap the amount of tax deductions that an individual can take at $17,000, in response to criticisms that his plan would cut taxes for the rich while raising them on the middle class. As ABC News reported:
“As an option you could say everybody’s going to get up to a $17,000 deduction; and you could use your charitable deduction, your home mortgage deduction, or others – your healthcare deduction. And you can fill that bucket, if you will, that $17,000 bucket that way,” he said during a visit with Denver’s FOX31. “And higher income people might have a lower number.”
The idea is not fully fleshed out and leaves a lot of questions unanswered, including whether or not the health care exclusion will be included (which saved the average family about $3,800 in 2006). But while including a cap on deductions would certainly cause Romney’s tax plan to raise more revenue, it still doesn’t make his plan add up.
– -Romney has laid out three criteria for his tax plan: it will cut income tax rates by 20 percent, not add to the deficit, and not raise taxes on the middle class. However, as an analysis by the Tax Policy Center shows, Romney can’t achieve all of those goals. Without ceding to a smaller rate reduction, Romney must either add to the deficit or raise taxes on the middle class. – — -

“I had a bad attitude almost my whole life. The smallest things would make me snap. In the classroom the teacher tells you to do something and you’re surrounded by friends used to you being like, “Oh I ain’t doing nothing,” so you feel like you have to stand up. I had a certain level of “hardness.” Very ignorant. It didn’t lead to anything but me sitting in ISS by myself while my friends were in class laughing.
I did my work, though. When reports cards came, people would be like, “Yo! You making A’s and B’s.” Because I’d
home and do my work. At school, I was having fun. I’d come to class, make a couple jokes, put my head down, go to sleep. But by the time I got home, I made sure I did everything. That was my ambition, I guess.
Everything changed in my ninth grade year. I can still remember the day it happened. I was sitting in class getting ready for football p
ractice. And my mama texted me and was like, “You gotta get home today, don’t go to practice.” My mama loved my playing football, so I knew there had to be something going on.”
