State of the Union Seating Planners Troll Ted Nugent, Put Him Next to Gay Civil Rights Activist from Portland

After all that brouhaha over Ted Nugent — you know, the guy who threatened to kill President Obama — getting invited to the State of the Union by Rep. Steve Stockman (R-TX), the hard-talking, pants-shitting rocker was seldom seen throughout the evening.

But the one photo of Nugent that did make the rounds was publicized not from Stockman’s camp, but rather from that of Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), the congressman who invited Nugent’s seatmate — Portland musician Thomas Lauderdale.

Lauderdale, best known for founding the “little orchestra” known as Pink Martini, is the anti-Ted Nugent: A liberal, Occupy-Movement-supporting, openly gay civil rights activist who favors gun control and loves classical music.

    more here

    • Ebogan63

I can attest to the fact that Pink Martini is the bomb! They have preformed on many New Years Eve concerts here in Portland. I hope Tom gave that asshole shit LOL

      • And didn’t POU say Nugent was going to be quiet as a church mouse? His twitter outburst afterwards was pretty tame for Nugent. That look on his face is priceless. He looks like a man that realizes too late he got played.

      • I love Pink Martini! I first heard about them via their PBS special. They’re fab!

I supported him for president because I felt he better had the interests of low-income people and the elderly, particularly with regards to Medicare. I also wanted to vote because I truly believe that every vote counts. If I would not have cast my ballot and Obama lost, then I would have felt so guilty,” Victor says.

NRA’s LaPierre To Respond To SOTU Thursday
National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre will deliver his group’s official response to President Obama’s State Of The Union speech on Thursday at the annual convention of the National Wild Turkey Federation.

In a release, the NRA announced LaPierre’s speech will be “carried live on” starting at 5:15 p.m. ET.

    • MsKitty

Personally, I hope his crazy ass keeps having speeches and news conferences. LaPierre’s been so over the top that even some conservatives are moving into “hey, I don’t know this guy” mode concerning him.

  • Robert Gibbs named NBC News, MSNBC contributor
By DYLAN BYERS | 2/12/13 9:16 PM EST

Robert Gibbs, former White House press secretary and senior adviser to President Obama’s 2012 campaign, has joined NBC News and MSNBC as a contributor, POLITICO has confirmed.

MSNBC spokesperson Lauren Skowronski confirmed the news tonight after MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow introduced Gibbs as a contributor on air.

Jake Tapper’s New Show is Called ‘The Lead’
By Chris Ariens on February 12, 2013 1:39 PM

He’s got an executive producer now Jake Tapper‘s new 4pm show has a name: “The Lead.” “The Lead” launches next month on CNN and will go head-to-head with “Your World with Neil Cavuto” on Fox News and Martin Bashir‘s show on MSNBC. Tapper joined CNN last month after 9 years at ABC News.

    • Cavuto owns that time slot.

      • nellcote

Bashir and Rev Al are the only political shows I go out of my way to watch anymore.

I like Martin enough and dislike Tapper enough to organize folks to somehow vote for the Bashir show.

When Congress gives up on the pretense of caring

    By Steve Benen

    Wed Feb 13, 2013 11:37 AM EST

Doug Elmendorf, the director of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, told the House Budget Committee this morning that automatic sequestration cuts will cost the American economy 750,000 jobs just this year. And really, that’s just the start, the “sequester” will push the economy closer to a recession, and do real damage to everything from education to food safety to medical research.

All of this leads to a fairly simple question: has Congress lost its mind?

The sequester was supposed to force both Democrats and Republicans to the bargaining table to work out a debt-reduction deal. With two weeks remaining until the brutal cuts kick in, Republicans realize how drastic the consequences would be, but aren’t in the mood to compromise.

The immigration debate in a post-truth world
    By Steve Benen
    Wed Feb 13, 2013 12:48 PM EST

Following up on an item from last month, it appears President Obama’s strategy for immigration reform has come together fairly well. His plan has always been quite transparent: he’d focus heavily on enforcement and border security at the outset, which would, in theory, engender goodwill from Republicans and create some legislative breathing room for comprehensive reform.

And for four years, Obama stuck to his commitment, reducing illegal border crossings, increasing deportations, and boosting enforcement at a level without modern American precedent. By any reasonable measure, this president has been more aggressive on this front than any of his Republican predecessor, all in the hopes of convincing GOP lawmakers to work constructively on a comprehensive solution.

Of course, that only works if Republicans in Congress make an effort to keep up with the basics of current events.

    The test of intestinal fortitude
    By Steve Benen
    Wed Feb 13, 2013 1:35 PM EST.

For two years, John Boehner has struggled as arguably the weakest House Speaker in modern times. He’s afraid to challenge members of his far-right caucus, afraid to strike deals conservative activists won’t like, and afraid of compromises that his party wouldn’t tolerate.

And with this in mind, his latest verbal attacks against President Obama are especially odd.

House Speaker John Boehner Tuesday repeatedly challenged the president’s willingness to go against his own party on issues that include reforms to social programs and spending.

“I think he’d like to deal with it [fiscal problems], but to do the kind of heavy lifting that needs to be done, I don’t think he’s got the guts to do it,” the Ohio Republican said in a meeting with a small group of reporters for nearly an hour Tuesday morning…. When pressed about the severity of that statement, he modified, saying the president does not have the “courage.”

There’s actually two layers of irony here. The first is that Boehner is convinced that Obama lacks the intestinal fortitude to adopt positions the left won’t like. Here’s a challenge for the Speaker: ask any liberal activist in America if they agree.

The second, of course, is that Speakers who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Boehner is infinitely more reluctant to break with his party’s orthodoxy than Obama is, and I don’t think anyone in American politics has ever considered the Speaker for a Profile in Courage Award.

    Wait, it gets worse.

    • He’s playing misdirection hoping no one notices he stinks at his job. Too late.

  • Report: Time Warner to shed most magazines
by Andrew Beaujon Updated Feb. 13, 2013 2:07 pm

“A serious buyer is in talks with” Time Warner about buying most of its magazine properties, James Bandler, Doris Burke and Jennifer Reingold report in Fortune. The deal is in “a formative stage and may never come to fruition,” they write.

In one scenario, most of the company’s publishing titles, such as People, InStyle, and Real Simple, would be carved out and rolled into an independent company and sold to the undisclosed buyer. Under this plan Time Warner (TWX) would maintain control of at least three titles—Time, Sports Illustrated, and Fortune, according to the sources.

FishbowlNY is entertaining guesses at who the “serious buyer” may be: Entries include Warren Buffett “(2012 was newspapers, 2013 is magazines!)” and Donald Trump “(Just so everyone has something to be mad about).”

So, what does this mean for Essence magazine, which is owned by Time Warner? They’ve just recently fired Constance White, who was the editor-in-chief, as well as the beauty editor and creative editor. Ever since the founders sole the magazine to Time Warner and Susan L. Taylor left, it’s been a hot mess.

    • Alma98

I think that was there intentions Sepia, They bought it knowing they were going to get rid of it. After squeezing the last dime out of Essence Bain style.

    • Miranda

SMH….Susan Taylor left and Essence decided to not be uplifting anymore and instead became catered to the mindset that all black women are lonely and desperate and shallow to the point we’d take romantic advice from Mr. Marcus. It really is a shame what the magazine has sunk too.

“we’d take romantic advice from Mr. Marcus.”

        Wait, what?

    • I hope he gives it to them straight with no chaser.

      • GN

TBH (not really directed at your comment, but it had me thinking) I hope that he balances recognition that we have to do better with some sense of acknowledgement that we as black people have come very far and still face massive amounts of racism. Seems like in this country, especially in the media, people like to emphasize point A while pushing point B under the rug. (side note: adept2u just posted an poignant graphic on twitter juxtaposing a lynching with a mass of people waving the Confederate flag, noting the irony that we’re told to leave history behind by people who celebrate even the most offensive historical backgrounds).

Imagine those kids hearing: “your ancestors were killed so that you can have opportunity–your ancestors fought and died for *you* because *you* are precious; please act like it.” It’s something that kids who already have issues with poor self-image and low self-esteem may respond to well. They wouldn’t be killing themselves if they thought they were worth anything, on a fundamental level, no matter the posturing and bluster. They really need to be reminded their ancestors were willing to sacrifice and die for *THEM*. They may not matter much to a portion of this country, but they mattered very much to people who sacrificed through slavery and Jim Crow so that we could have a chance at getting at least a small portion of our due. Killing each other off in these numbers is a slap in their face, and already, the civil rights movement is distorted, spun by bullshitters looking to get a quick leg up on our backs, and disrespected. I hope that President Obama sends a good message and is able to reach some of those kids.

        • Worldwatcher7

Amen, Amen to your insightful message. I also think that our community needs to face the hard truth that some of these youth are responding to the family and community environments we’ve given them. PBO broached some of this in his much maligned Father’s Day speech.

          • GN

Very true. These kids have to live in a country in which they are valued less for reasons which largely have nothing to do with them or their families. For that to not even be acknowledged by most people is just crazy, it’s just insane. I’m in the camp that racism really is a white folks problem, not just something that black people need to “get over” while misbehavior and privilege is just papered over. I hope to hear more than a classic “lift yourselves up by your bootstraps” speech (I think the Father’s Day speech was 100% appropriate *for the setting and occasion* btw). The solutions I think have to run the gamut from family to state and fed, just as you note. All hands on deck IMO.

  • conlakappa

The VoteVets have decided to mount up on gun control. I so love how the group that describes itself as “The Voice of 21st Century Patriots” have decided to frame its participation in the debate. Truly, the RW, filled with tin soldiers and hawks with bad knees that prevented them from serving [*cough*] have nothinglegitimate to say in response:

    Dear [conlakappa] –

Did you watch President Obama’s State of the Union Address last night?

From reforming immigration and education to a focus on job creation and an overdue drawdown in Afghanistan, the president laid out a vision for the next four years that we can all be proud of.

But if the divided ovations were any indication, the work ahead won’t be easy.

There is one issue, however, that has overwhelming public support among Democrats and Republicans: taking common sense action to reduce gun violence in America.

If you’re ready to stand with in this fight, make a $5 contribution today and help us organize veterans in support of legislation to prevent gun violence in the United States.

Veterans make extremely powerful messengers on this issue, and the president needs us if he’s going to sign a bill.

Veterans have seen, first hand, the carnage that assault weapons cause. We’ve had to go through background checks to get into the military and handle a weapon.

Our troops in combat aren’t even authorized to attach magazines with more than 30 rounds to their semi-automatic weapons. There’s no reason we should authorize it for anyone here at home.

We’re going to engage on this one, and I’m thankful that we’ll be in it together.

    Thanks for your support.

Hold up…..didn’t the cops say they found Dorner’s driver’s license in the burned up cabin?

this is from an article written Monday:

After authorities interviewed the boat captain early Thursday, they found Dorner’s wallet and identification cards “at the San Ysidro Point of Entry” near the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the court records. That same day, a guard at the Point Loma Naval Base told authorities he had spotted a man matching Dorner’s description trying to sneak onto the base, according to the filing.

So he took his driver’s license with him, because…when you’re stealing a car you still wanna obey all the traffic laws? He was gonna cash a check? This makes no sense.

    • Alma98

It’s all so confusing Miranda I think there really needs to be an investigation. No one is disputing that Dorner was a murderer, what people want to know is the truth. I believe the LAPD is in cya mode, they burned a man alive like it they were knight riders from 1850. The whole thing is bizarre from beginning to end.

      • BoomerGal

Yeah, he was a”murderer,” but the way I see it, they took away his life and future. They screwed this guy and he flipped. LAPD is known to be corrupt and abusive. And the beat goes on.

“Should always be mindful instant polls only those watching, other caveats”…………….lemme get this straight….this fool is telling us that yeah, the poll numbers were great for the President’s speech, but we only polled those who actually watched the speech so be mindful of that fact.

Seriously….well I do declare, you mean a poll about a speech only includes people who actually listened to the speech? That hardly seems fair! If this poll doesn’t include all the 3 and 4 yr olds that were watching Bubble Guppies and Team Umizoomi on Nick Jr last night then this poll is an outlier.

Last knight, all of them were feverishly working hard to find some negatives in the President’s SOTU speech to criticize. Most of them are still not aware that many of us no longer depend on them for news and analysis. I missed the SOTU speech because I was working. I watched a PBS replay, but the moment the President finished speaking, the pundits started telling me what the president said and what he failed to say. I immediately clicked. There was no way I was going to be disrespected. I had listened to the same speech and had already formed my impression of it. I didn’t need Judy, Gigot or Shields to interpret the speech for me.

Pelosi: Boehner Was ‘Projecting’ When He Called Obama Weak

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said that Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) was “projecting” his own failures when he claimed that President Obama won’t cut spending because he is too weak to stand up to the liberal wing of his party.

And what happens when you take away the first couple of rungs on the economic ladder — you make it harder for people to get on the ladder,” Boehner said. “Our goal is to get people on the ladder and help them climb that ladder so they can live the American dream. And a lot of people who are being the paid minimum wage are being paid that because they come to the workforce with no skills. And this makes it harder for them to acquire the skills they need in order to climb that ladder successfully.”

I know I am old because the doc who treated me in the ER looked like Doogie Howser & I’m not sure he was old enough to shave! However, he was so very kind & even gave me a hug when I cried.

I will be home for a while till I heal & daughter goes home. Then I will go back to do what I can.

    – — ———-BLACK HISTORY MONTH — —

—— Little Known Black History Fact: Joseph Searles —-

——-On February 13, 1970, Joseph Searles became the first African American member of the New York Stock Exchange. The Kansas State University graduate was working as an aide for New York City Mayor John Lindsey when he was offered the job as a floor trader and a general partner of Newburger, Loeb and Co.

Searles was raised in Ft. Hood, Texas. At 5”11, 145 lbs, Searles was large enough to play with his father’s colleagues on the battalion team at a young age. He attended Killeen High School during the school’s first year of integration and became its first black player. Searles became a star player at Kansas State University. After KSU, he graduated from George Washington University Law school then headed to the pros to play for the New York Giants in the 1960s. Searles was among the few in the league during the civil rights era, and was paid a salary of $14,000. His success, his afro and green Jaguar – were among concern by many. He was asked to cut his hair and hide his car when arriving at practice. – -[Woo! Hoo!]

Searles played for the Giants until 1967. Soon after he entered politics, working for Mayor John Lindsey. Searles had two gubernatorial appointments as Chairman and Director of the State of New York Mortgage Agency where he was responsible for municipal housing issues totaling more than $600 million. Within 3 years of leaving the NFL, Searles had quit his job with Lindsay and took on the NY Stock Exchange as its first black floor trader.

Man, how much do I love Colin Firth? Instead of watching the SOTU or the response live (I watched it on DVR a lil later) was instead watching Pride & Prejudice with Colin Firth. How much to I love this version, I watched it again today…lol.

I know I’ve said it before, but man I love Colin Firth’s Mr Darcy. I may be really biased, but IMHO he’s the best actor to ever pay the character…lol. I will NOT listen to any disagreements…lol.

—– Republican Congressman Ridicules His Party For Lame Hashtag– —

    – —–<i>Rep. Justin Amash says Republican leadership are wrong to try to blame Obama for the sequester — especially with such a terrible Twitter hashtag. “I think it’s kind of 2008.”
    – – —SNIP – — – –

—–“I think it’s a mistake on the part of Republicans to try to pin the sequester on Obama,” Amash said. “It’s totally disingenuous. The debt ceiling deal in 2011 was agreed to by Republicans and Democrats, and regardless of who came up with the sequester, they all voted for it. So, you can’t vote for something and, with a straight face, go blame the other guy for its existence in law.”

Although the sequester, which would cut $1.2 trillion in federal spending over the next ten years, was approved as an incentive for Congress to approve more strategic cuts, Amash said lawmakers, including those in his own party, should take responsibility for the plan they approved.

“You voted for it, you signed it, that means you support it,” Amash said. “And if you don’t support it, then don’t vote for it and don’t sign it.”

Scott Brown debuts as Fox News contributor

Former Senator Scott Brown transitioned from potential comeback politician to pundit in just two weeks, making his debut as a contributor to Fox News on Wednesday night in an appearance also billed as an “exclusive” by host Sean Hannity.

Fans and skeptics alike saw the move as a plush landing pad for the Republican, a telegenic former model who used his regular-guy appeal to great effect in his campaign for US Senate and whose upset win in 2010 was championed and chronicled on Fox.

Brown lost reelection to Democrat Elizabeth Warren in November, but was expected to make another special election run after Senator John F. Kerry stepped down last month to become secretary of state. Two weeks ago, Brown stunned the political establishment by announcing he would not run, and last week Fox revealed he was in negotiations to become a contributor.

Reports: Olympian Pistorius shoots dead his girlfriend

South African media are reporting that Paralympic gold medalist Oscar Pistorius has allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend after mistaking her for an intruder at his home early Thursday morning.

Pistorius has been arrested and is being questioned by police, The Associated Press reported. He is expected to appear in court later today.

Multiple media outlets in the country, including the Mail & Guardian, citing local police, said the woman, 30, died at the scene at the athlete’s house in Pretoria. The original source of the report appears to be Beeld, an Afrikaans-language daily newspaper.

Police spokesperson Captain Sarah Mcirca confirmed to South African media that the victim was shot in the arm and head. A 9mm pistol was recovered at the scene.
