It was some crazy old buzzard who shot up a law office because he was pissed about being sued. As far as I know, none of the people he shot have died.

I’m so glad Mark Kelly brought this up during the hearings today. He & Gabby were stellar & a real force to stand strong on this issue.

    • What was the point of her tweeting that? It reeks of, “Well don’t blame me! I tooooooooooold Obama he should’ve mentioned poverty!”.

How about Rep. Lee put forth LEGISLATION to address poverty instead of sending tweets to impress EmoProgs.

      • Camille

        Thank you.

You know, I’m really getting quite tired of Barbara Lee. She seems to spend so much time publicly staking some righteous position, and so little time doing the actual heavy lifting necessary to get things done.

Remembering that Ron Dellums was her mentor and political godfather doesn’t help matters.

Wasn’t she one of the recommendations made by the CBC for a cabinet position? LOL.

  • Belafonte: Blacks should participate in gun debate
    Jan. 29 9:25 PM EST

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Singer, actor and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte on Tuesday urged leaders in the black community to get more involved in the national debate on guns.

Belafonte told The Associated Press that the current discussion arising out of the Connecticut school massacre in December often ignores decades of urban gun violence. He said it’s important that African-American leaders participate in the debate over gun control.

“What really concerns me is the ingredients of the discourse,” he said. “The African-American community … where is that community? Where is that voice? I think the black community, the black leadership need to stir it up.”

…”What I find missing mostly in the American discourse is the rejection of radical thought,” he said. “They (national leaders) speak within the same dull space they inherited from past oppressors.”

Gabrielle Giffords’ husband smacks down Wayne LaPierre

Posted by Greg Sargent on January 30, 2013 at 1:38 pm

Perhaps the most important moment so far in today’s Senate Judiciary hearing on guns came when astronaut Mark Kelly directly confronted NRA head Wayne LaPierre over the shooting of his wife, Gabrielle Giffords. Between that exchange and another one involving Senator Dick Durbin, LaPierre’s argument was completely unmasked for the sham that it is.

During the hearing, LaPierre repeatedly voiced the talking point that there’s no need to expand the background check system because criminals don’t cooperate with background checks. Kelly responded:

The Tuscon shooter was an admitted drug user. He was rejected from the U.S. Army because of his drug use. He was clearly mentally ill. And when he purchased that gun in November, his plan was to assassinate my wife and commit mass murder at that Safeway in Tucson. He was a criminal. Because of his drug use, and because of what he was planning on doing. But because of these gaps in the mental health system, in this case, those 121,000 records, I admit did not include a record on him. But it could have.

And if it did, he would have failed that background check. he would have likely gone to a gun show, or a private seller, and avoided that background check. But if we close that gun show loophole, if we require private sellers to complete a background check, and we get those 121,000 records and others into the systems, we will prevent gun crime. That is an absolute truth. It would have happened in Tucson. My wife would not have been sitting here today if we had stronger background checks.

    Massachusetts Has a New Senator

    by BooMan
Wed Jan 30th, 2013 at 11:34:14 AM EST

I suppose that Lawrence O’Donnell will be disappointed, and I admit that I, too, liked the idea of Barney Frank as a senator. But Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick chose to appoint his former legal counsel and chief of staff, William ‘Mo’ Cowan to serve as an interim replacement for John Kerry. This is the first I have ever heard of Mr. Cowan. The most newsworthy aspect of the appointment is that Cowan is an African-American, and the Senate will now have two black senators for the first time in its history. The Boston Globe has some good biographical information on Mr. Cowan.

Cowan, 43, was first hired by Patrick as his legal counsel in 2009 and was then promoted to chief of staff in 2010. Last November, Cowan stepped down from the $144,000 a year job.
Cowan is a North Carolina native and Duke University graduate who came to Boston to attend Northeastern University Law School in the early 1990s – and never left the region. One of the city’s leading African-American lawyers, Cowan is a former partner in the politically connected law firm of Mintz Levin…

…Cowan is a native of Yadkinville, N.C., a town of 2,200 about 25 miles west of Winston-Salem, where he grew up on a street full of family. Cowan’s father died when he was 16 years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his two sisters on little more than a minimum wage.

He was the first from his high school, Forbush High School, to attend Duke, one of the nation’s premier colleges.

Like it or not, the sequester is coming
    By Steve Benen

    Wed Jan 30, 2013 12:46 PM EST

I know you don’t want to hear about automatic sequestration spending cuts; I don’t either. We just wrapped up a big fiscal fight a few weeks ago, and the very mention of the word “sequester” makes eyes glaze over from coast to coast. I get that.

But it’s time start taking this seriously, anyway, because in about 30 days, some significant, deliberately painful cuts are due to kick, and they pose an important risk to the fragile economic recovery.

Remember, the sequester was designed to be horrible. Jon Stewart recently noted that these cuts are the equivalent of policymakers tying someone you care about to train tracks, on purpose, in order to create an incentive to find a solution before the train arrives. In this case, the solution would mean striking a bipartisan deal to replace $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts.

Graham: Clinton ‘got away with murder’
    By Steve Benen
    Wed Jan 30, 2013 9:46 AM EST.

Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) approach to September’s deadly attack in Benghazi has gotten a little out of hand. Indeed, in some corners, it’s become a running joke — Lindsey Graham is considering putting a hold on the Super Bowl until he gets answers on Benghazi. Lindsey Graham doesn’t want anyone to finish the third season of Downton Abbey until he gets answers on Benghazi. Lindsey Graham won’t let me have breakfast until he gets answers on Benghazi.

But as he gets more agitated, Graham’s rhetoric is getting more disturbing (via ThinkProgress)

    From Graham

“But the one thing I’m not going to do is vote on a new secretary of defense until the old secretary of defense, Leon Panetta, who I like very much, testifies about what happened in Benghazi.

“I haven’t forgotten about Benghazi. Hillary Clinton got away with murder, in my view.”

    • conlakappa

I wondered what new bodies would be pinned on her. There used to be a Web site called “People Killed by the Clintons” or something awfully close. It morphed somewhat when some of the same bodies were also attributed to Candidate Obama [yeah, I don’t know]. It’s hard to know how many cases they should have caught!

LOL. The phony love affair is short-lived.

Just this past October or so, just before the presidential elections, I recall watching some event where Lindsey Graham introduces Hillary Clinton to a room.

He gushed and waxed poetic about her wonderfulness and just how much he loved and respected her and what a formidable patriot she was and what a great president she would have made etc.

      Fast forward 3 months~~

I now await with baited breath, Jonathan Capeheart’s very important take on Mo Cowan.

      • trose1

Yes, I remember the analysis of Scott and its meaning etc etc blah blah blah.

    • Ebogan63

Um, he’s an ally of Patrick, who’s a Dem, dumbshit. NEXT!

      • But Patrick is an ally of PBO, and Glaude doesn’t like PBO because he hurt Cornel West’s fweelings.

    • GN

Okay what exactly is the sole patrol’s/professional left’s issue with Mo Cowan? Or are they simply bitching to be bitching?

      • Ebogan63

        You called it, GN!

      • nathkatun7

They are bitching because a governor who is black appointed another black person to the Senate instead of their preferred candidate. Notice that all these people, who up in arms against Mo Cowan, said absolutely nothing when he appointed a white, straight, male to replace Teddy Kennedy.

        • GN

Just saying, please feel the sole patrol’s “love” for black people in action. This man Cowan, from what I read, has spent his career mentoring black professionals, trying to help others get a leg up and get in. He was involved in one of the most progressive gubernatorial administrations in the country (an admin which also did an awful lot to hook up the PL’s boo Elizabeth Warren {no shade to her, I can’t stand the PL but I believe that she is fantastic}). Yet look at these people acting the damn fool.

Thank you Governor Patrick. I wish I could vote for him in 2016 for a national office, I really do, I like him as a politician so much.

          • TyrenM

Agreed. Gov. Patrick has been Bout It!

          • nathkatun7

” I wish I could vote for him in 2016 for a national office, I really do, I like him as a politician so much.”

Me too GN! I really admire and respect Governor Patrick. Unlike some of the self-serving members of CBC, he has been steadfast in supporting President Obama. By the way, did Alycee Hastings, Charles Rangel and some other CBC members speak up in defense of Gov. Patrick’s appointment of William “Mo” Cowan to the Senate when he was being attacked by Barney Frank and the other “emoprogs”? If they did, It was a well kept secret.

Black delegates tempted by Virginia GOP’s Senate map
By Laura Vozzella, Wednesday, January 30, 1:58 PM

RICHMOND — At least two black Democrats in Virginia’s House say they might support the GOP’s surprise Senate redistricting plan.

Del. Onzlee Ware (D-Roanoke) and Rosalyn R. Dance (D-Petersburg) said Wednesday that they are on the fence about a plan that would create a new majority-black district in Southside but dilute black voting power elsewhere to make at least eight other districts more heavily Republican.

The likely outcome would be to elect a sixth black senator, but diminish the overall power of Democrats in the now evenly split Senate.

“Here’s an opportunity where I can actually have a great impact on African Americans, yet at the same time, it doesn’t help the entire Democratic party,” Ware said. “Should I always have to forgo the interests of black people for the good of the party?. . . I have a real dilemma on my hands right now.”

    MORE: http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/va-politics/black-delegates-tempted-by-gops-senate-map/2013/01/30/7612e074-6b0a-11e2-ada3-d86a4806d5ee_story.html?tid=wp_ipad

Ware said. “Should I always have to forgo the interests of black people for the good of the party?. . . I have a real dilemma on my hands right now.”

Is this really about the interests of black people or this guy Ware’s?

    • Town

Here’s the thing: it DOESN’T help Democrats OR black people for black people to be packed into a district to be left ignored.

How is it that VA has voted blue in the last two presidential elections and has 2 Democratic senators but only 3 Democratic congressmen out of 11?

Because most of the black people in the state are packed into one district, that’s why. We very well could have 2 or 3 more Democratic congresspersons from VA if all the black people from Richmond to Tidewater that are in one district now are divided between 2 or 3.

It DOES help a Negro preen about and say they’re the State Senator, though.

And Ms. Petersburg needs to have a seat, as broke down as Petersburg is, does she really think having a marginalized seat is good for Petersburg? She needs to be opposing that toll McDonnell is trying to put up, which would HURT Petersburg.

The Divergent Fates of Sarah Palin and Shirley Sherrod

    By Ryan Cooper

With the recent retirement of Sarah Palin from her grotesquely lucrative career as a Fox commentator, I immediately thought of another person who was inadvertently catapulted to national prominence: Shirley Sherrod (backstory here). Not to compare the content of their thoughts or ideologies, of course, just the trajectory of their lives. Because Sherrod could have easily parleyed her burst of fame into one of those sumptuous TV commentator/author/lecturer careers, abandoning all her previous work and crisscrossing the country to give milquetoast addresses to executive retreats.

But she did not. Instead, even after both she and a nonprofit she works for got a sizable settlement from the USDA for discrimination in decades past, she didn’t change much. She still does the same thing she’s always done: help poor farmers in rural Georgia, where she grew up. I interviewed her for our latest issue; here’s what she’s done with part of the money:

With that money, and under Sherrod’s leadership, New Communities was able in June 2011 to buy a new piece of property, called Cypress Pond. A 1,638-acre estate, complete with a colossal white-pillared antebellum mansion, it was originally owned by the largest slaveholder and richest man in Georgia. Due to the housing collapse, the price had been marked down from $21 million to $4.5 million. Sherrod plans to establish an agricultural training program there, as well as a program that will bring local blacks and whites together in partnership and promote racial healing. The old mansion is currently being renovated to make room for a conference center and additional meeting space. “White and black together in this area, I think it becomes the perfect place for being helpful in getting folks to get beyond race,” she says. In the meantime, they’re doing some actual farming. Just over the last year, they harvested $50,000 worth of pecans from previously planted trees to help defray maintenance costs

This article should be forwarded everywhere. Shirley Sherrod and her husband are real strategic and long-range thinkers. Their work is creating a more just and equitable future for all of us.

  • Verizon Sells Wireless Spectrum to Black-Owned Firm

Verizon Wireless Friday announced the sale of wireless spectrum licenses in the Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh-Durham, N.C., cellular market areas to a black-owned firm as part of a larger transaction in which AT&T bought Verizon spectrum for $1.9 billion, the Minority Media & Telecommunications Council said on Friday.

“. . . Carriers like Verizon and AT&T are snapping up spectrum left and right in order to deal with the increased bandwidth demands of smartphone- and tablet-hungry consumers,” Chloe Albanesius reported for PC Magazine. “Both carriers are also building out their 4G LTE networks, which boosts speeds but includes even more bandwidth strains, resulting in the need for more spectrum.”

MMTC said, “Over the past nine months, MMTC, the National Urban League (NUL) and the National Council of La Raza (NCLR) worked with Verizon Wireless to help it conduct a wide and intensive outreach to minority- and women-owned telecommunications companies and entrepreneurs. Working closely with the nationally recognized minority investment banking firm Loop Capital LLC, NUL, NCLR and MMTC raised awareness of the sale process, and advised some 45 firms on procedures and strategies for bidding on the spectrum.

    – — –White House: GOP responsible for contracting economy– – — ***fist bump***

    – —-White House press secretary Jay Carney laid the blame for a surprise economic contraction squarely at the feet of congressional Republicans Wednesday, saying economic threats during the “fiscal cliff” negotiations had prevented important defense spending.

“Our economy is facing a major headwinds, and that’s Republicans in Congress,” Carney said.

The Commerce Department projected Wednesday that the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) shrank by 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Carney said that was partially attributable to the threat of sequestration, which would implement across-the-board spending cuts if a long-term deficit deal is not reached.

“This is political brinkmanship that results in one primary victim. That’s American taxpayers and the American middle class,” Carney said, acknowledging the GDP projection was bad news.

Jziglar these jackasses just live to fix they lips to attack PBO, never mind that facts often get in the way of their stupid takes.

      • Camille

They only want the blacks THEY pick.

No different from the PL. They get to define who qualifies as a woman and a minority. And only those they sanction reap the benefits of their validation and outrage on their behalf. Or else.

Have you ever heard a single one of these we demand equality and power for women come to Mrs Obama’s defense on anything?
Or have you ever heard any of the loudmouths in the CBC even feign upset at the disrespect of the First Lady?

        • jziglar

Nope ! But they feigned outrage and went out of their way to defend Billy Boy for lying about getting a blowjob. Too busy kissing the Clinton’s ass but they won’t even defend the Obama’s. The CBC is a joke.

      • QOakaJP

Maybe they know this, but are trying to position themselves as being the reason why PBO does what he does (because, as the PL wants us to believe, the president either can’t think for himself, or he does the “wrong” kind of thinking.)

        • conlakappa

Yep, they came late to him and have been trying to play catch-up ever since then.

    • jds09

I want to see the list!

“The Black Caucus of Congress then sent 61 names to the White House,” Hastings said, according to the Sacramento Observer. “Time went by. Not one of that 61 was selected – not one.”

Was it 61 different names or the same one 61 times? The public has a right to know. lol

      • conlakappa

Seriously. He knows that the lazy media won’t ask the follow-up question and he had enough sense to make it sound like an almost-credible number.

      • nellcote

Did they all pass background checks? How many were relatives or business associates? No aspersions to the people on the list but the CBC seems to have different priorities.

    • GOVCHRIS1988

“If I was president of the United States, there is no way in hell that I would raise a billion dollars and don’t spend but a million dollars with people who probably had as much to do with my becoming president as anybody,” the Florida Democrat said.

NEGRO!? Thats why your ass ain’t President!!!! He was running for President of the United States. Not financing black publications. WHAT THE FUCK!!?

You know what, this is EXACTLY why Barack Obama ain’t picked none of the people on that damned list. The CBC is like the rest of em, are mad as shit that this gentleman didn’t stay in and wait his turn for the Presidency and get their blessing. Hell the fuck no you do not get to dictate to Barack Obama who to pick for his cabinet. In that house for four more years, that is his decision to make, not yours. See, this is why I am so against the gerrymandering of minority majority districts now. I understood the reasoning why they did it before, but now I’m like we need to end this. Because now we have do nothing congressman just like the rest of them and all they want to do is come up when Barack Obama gets in as though he owes you shit. This is what is wrong with the CBC. They have this mentality that just because he is black, he’s supposed to cater specifically to black issues only, as if healthcare, gay rights, immigration, education, gun control, financial reform ain’t got shit to do with black people. Its funny, because they never really define what black issues are, they just speak in the abstracts like, alleviating poverty, or appoint one of us in your cabinet. As if them Negroes were gonna follow President Obama’s orders, because thats what they really do in the Cabinet and you know them hucklebucks wouldn’t stand for that. So they can go to Wembley Stadium in London and have all them seats.

      • MsKitty

And let the church say Amen.

      • jds09

In my younger days I worked for a very brilliant young black man who told me “black people, we don’t elect black politicians,it’s a coronation.” His logic being, once they are in office they don’t have to produce, just be vocal. Over the years, in many cases, I’ve found that to be true. I’m with you on the gerrymandered districts.

      • Camille

    • Hastings is lying. According to this article, the CBC only sent TWO names: Barbara Lee and Melvin Watt: http://blog.sfgate.com/nov05election/2013/01/10/congressional-black-caucus-urging-obama-to-appoint-oakland%E2%80%99s-barbara-lee-as-secretary-of-labor/

      And look at this bs:

Rep. Alcee L. Hastings says President Obama of consistently disrespects the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC), the Black Press, and graduates of historically Black colleges, key groups that were critical to his re-election in November.

…Hastings said he also outspent the Obama campaign in other media in Broward County, which makes up part of his congressional district.

“I did that because I wanted Obama to win the presidency, but I particularly went to the ground in this election to prove to him and his minions that this was territory that had been watered, flowered, grown and harvested long before anybody knew his (expletive) name.”

      MORE: http://sacobserver.com/2013/01/cbc-member-says-obama-disrespects-blacks/

So Hastings is publicly CURSING President Obama just because he didn’t spend money with his Black publishing buddies??? And how is PBO disrespecting HBCUs when he INCREASED their funding???

      • GOVCHRIS1988

Oh, now I see. Its about old ass Alcee. Yeah, ALCEE won the Presidency for Barack Obama. It was ALCEE who was disrespected because the President didn’t recognize his hard work in getting his district” watered” for harvest so that the President could win twice.

Hastings continued, “…Because of your efforts –national Black publishers – because of many of your efforts, we voted 2 percent in this election more than we did in ’08. And I received 2 percent more in the congressional district that I serve than he did –and that’s the message I wanted to send to him.”
Yet, he’s President of the United States. And you a low name Congressman.
        This nig…….

What national black publishers is this fool even talking about? This is the problem right here. Its the 21st century, PBO’s camp campaigned like it was 2012 and not like it was 1986. They researched the data and determined the most effective bang for their buck considering ALL the modes of communication. Alcee Hastings thinks its 30 years ago and OFA needed to be spending on ads in Atlanta Daily World and on the back of church fans. I dont know what publications he is even referring too….what I do know is between Tom Joyner, Steve Harvey, Rickey Smiley, Michael Baisden and Al Sharpton, PBO and his surrogates reached more than 70% of AA voters in this country. What I do know is Stefani Brown of OFA was genius in creating the grassroots level of campaigning via beauty and barber shops, black churches and HBCUs. So Alcee can miss me with this mess about spending money in some publications with a circulation of 10.

          • GOVCHRIS1988

Oh, you should have seen this right here.

Hastings drew loud laughter when he discussed his deep aversion to social media.

“That rush to judgment that the media does is particularly damaging, especially when you got people in their bedrooms at 3 o’clock in the morning, sitting looking at a screen and Googling, twatting and tweeting all night long. It ain’t that much communications in the world,” he said.

“People ask do I have a Blackberry? No! A Whiteberry, either. The kids asked to give me an iPad. What do I need an iPad for? I have a flip phone and I have no contacts on it. I don’t give a (expletive) if nobody calls me. I want to be able to call when I want to call.”

GOP Montana Legislator Wants State To Spank Criminals

Montana State Rep. Jerry O’Neil (R) is sponsoring a bill to allow defendants to “bargain with the court” to receive “corporal punishment in lieu of incarceration.” The bill would apply to not just misdemeanor crimes, but also felonies — though the bill requires that the “exact nature of the corporal punishment to be imposed” be “commensurate with the severity, nature, and degree of the harm caused by the offender.”

John S. Adams, who covers the Montana legislature for the Great Falls Tribune, wrote : “The measure is already raising eyebrows and is sure to catch the attention of those on the lookout for ‘bat crap crazy’ legislation this session. Republican leadership has been doing its best to tamp down any potential bills the other side might use to embarrass the GOP as they work to craft a budget. This one apparently didn’t get tamped.”

    – — Missouri Bill Would Require All First Graders To Take NRA-Sponsored Gun Class– —
    – – –Students in Missouri have no sexual education requirement, so there’s a good chance they don’t know how to properly protect themselves from STIs or unintended pregnancy. Soon, though, they may be able to protect themselves from guns.

Missouri state Senate is considering a bill that would require all first graders in the state to take a gun safety training course. Using a grant provided by the National Rifle Association, it would put a “National Rifle Association’s Eddie Eagle Gunsafe Program” instructor in every first grade classroom.

The irony that there’s no requirement for students to learn about their bodies — but that there is one for deadly weapons — seems lost on the legislators proposing the measure, one of whom lamented, “I hate mandates as much as anyone, but some concerns and conditions rise to the level of needing a mandate”:pushing for its passage:
    – — -SNIP- —

    – – – – —And if the legislature is truly worried about protecting their students, sex education is a good place to start. Missouri’s young people suffer some of the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases in the country. Many of the schools run abstinence-only education, which is proven ineffective and likely to lead to more STIs and unintended pregnancies. It may not be as terrifying to a parent to imagine their child pregnant instead of shot, but it’s a much more likely possibility: In Missouri, 51 out of every 1,000 women have an unintended pregnancy, while there are 12.3 gun deaths per 100,00 people.

President Obama’s popularity surges to three-year high

President Obama is riding a wave of personal popularity into his second term, with his highest favorability ratings since his first year in office, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Fully 60 percent of Americans have a favorable impression of Obama in the new poll, up slightly from October but a clear shift in opinion from an election year in which his ratings hovered in the mid-to-low 50s. And by 39 percent to 26 percent, the president now has more “strongly” positive ratings than strongly negative reviews, breaking a two-year stretch in which intense opposition was on par with (or higher than) intense support.

45,800 Ford workers to get record $8,300 profit-sharing checks

Ford Motor Co.’s record North American profit in 2012 will have a ripple effect on auto communities across the country and especially here in Southeast Michigan. Roughly 45,800 hourly United Auto Workers members who work at Ford plants in the United States will receive record profit-sharing checks of $8,300 on average in March.

On average, the $8,300 profit-sharing check will have an economic impact of $20,750 per worker, when factoring a multiplying ripple effect, said David Sowerby, portfolio manager for Loomis Sayles in Bloomfield Hills.

“While we encourage savings for the long term, spending it locally, especially on made-in-Michigan products, is a bigger economic multiplier,” Sowerby said. “It gives us a decent boost.”[….]

Panera Doesn’t Offer a Free Lunch—It Offers Caring

What happens when a business does not require customers to pay for its products? Panera Cares would know. The community-based, pay-what-you-want, nonprofit arm of bakery-cafe chain Panera Bread (PNRA) opened its fifth store, in Boston, on Jan. 23. While the restaurants list suggested prices for the items, customers can pay more, less, or nothing. They can also volunteer time instead.[….] On its first day, the new Boston store took in 109 percent of the retail value of 700 transactions.

The percentage tends to decline after opening week. So far, the four stores in Portland, St. Louis, Detroit, and Chicago are collecting an average of 75 percent of the suggested price, enough to cover operating costs. About one-fifth of diners pay less than the suggested price. Occasional oddities aside, Panera sees the program as a sustainable way for communities to feed themselves, including people that cannot afford to buy food. As of now, “There’s no intention to close any of these down,” says Antonacci.

FDA Allows College Campus To Make Contraception More Accessible With Plan B Vending Machine

Obama to travel to Minneapolis on Monday to push gun agenda
Posted by Philip Rucker on January 30, 2013 at 6:02 pm

President Obama will travel to Minneapolis next week as part of his continuing efforts to mobilize public support around his broad gun-control agenda.
A White House official said Obama will meet with local elected officials and law enforcement officials Monday to study steps Minneapolis has taken to reduce gun violence. The president also plans to tout his national proposals, which include universal background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.Obama’s visit to Minnesota comes as Congress weighs his proposals, some of which have met resistance not only from Republicans but also from some Democratic lawmakers.

Minneapolis has been in the spotlight in the gun debate in recent years. The city, after a spike in violent crime involving young people, launched a series of youth violence initiatives in recent years that have reduced the number of shooting incidents. The area’s law enforcement leaders have been leading proponents of stronger background checks for gun buyers. And earlier in January, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak (D) hosted a regional gun policy summit.

Hospitals Consider Picking Up The Tab For South Carolina’s Medicaid Expansion

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) remains a vocal opponent of President Obama’s health care reform law, and she has refused to participate in its state-level provisions, including accepting its optional expansion of the Medicaid program. The governor says she won’t extend Medicaid coverage to an estimated 500,000 additional low-income residents in her state because it’s too expensive — but hospital officials are wondering if she would change her mind if they picked up the tab.

Hospitals seeking to expand Medicaid may propose a “provider tax” in order to cover the cost of the expansion. The hospital industry would be willing to tax itself in order to collect billions of federal funding designated for the states that choose to expand Medicaid,[….]

The feds are covering 100% of medicaid expansion for the first 3 years and 90% after. It’s just insane that states won’t sign up for it. That tax for hospitals will be a pittance for at least the first 5 years compared to the millions they’ll get.

George Zimmerman defense releases new Trayvon Martin picture

The attorney for George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watchman charged with shooting and killing Trayvon Martin, has released a new picture of 17-year-old Martin as part of discovery on Wednesday.

Attorney Mark O’Mara told Local 6 that Martin’s father, Tracy Martin, provided what the defense team says is a much more accurate picture of his son to Sanford Police Department on Feb. 27, 2012 — the day after the shooting.

O’Mara says his defense team believes that the picture Martin’s family provided to the media, depicting a younger Trayvon Martin, is unfair to Zimmerman. O’Mara says many in the public still view Martin as a young boy because of one of the first pictures released of him.

In the midst of school shootings, high unemployment, divisive politics, and seemingly neverending violence in many of our communities, it is refreshing to see a young boy armed with a camera, a good heart, and loving words attempt to inspire the world…one video at a time.

    – —10 facts about Mo Cowan – –
    – — – – His name has been ringing in political ears since Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick selected him Wednesday to fill soon-to-be Secretary of State John Kerry’s Senate seat. But who exactly is William “Mo” Cowan? Here are 10 facts that you need to know about Massachusetts’s interim U.S. senator.

    1. Cowan is close to the governor. He served as Patrick’s legal counsel when he was hired in 2009, before being promoted a year later to chief of staff. He stepped down from the position this month, announcing his intention to leave late last year. However, he was still a senior adviser to Patrick.
    2. The 43-year-old will be the second African-American to ever serve Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate.
His predecessor was Edward Brooke, who served 1967-1979 and was the first African-American elected to Senate by popular vote.

    3. Cowan has no prior elected government experience at all. However, he is active in his community, serving on several local school boards.

    4. When Gov. Mitt Romney was being criticized for the lack of diversity in appointing judges, Cowan helped the Republican find minority lawyers to fill the positions. He aided Middlesex District Attorney Gerard T. Leone Jr. in similar appointments and is also credited with helping to attract more black lawyers to the prominent law firm Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo.

    10. Cowan, the son of a machinist and a seamstress, is originally from Yadkinville, N.C., which was segregated during his boyhood. He witnessed Ku Klux Klan activities. – –[HE KNOWS!!] — –
