  • Chris Christie Isn’t Your Best Friend
By Bob Cesca · January 07,2013

…The truth is, however, he isn’t your friend, nor is he the Republican messiah. To the latter point, I’m beginning to doubt that he’ll have any chance whatsoever of becoming the Republican nominee for president in 2016, with or without crossover support from liberal Democrats.

Yes, Christie is a moderate on marriage equality. He supports civil unions but not full marriage rights. In a hardlined Republican crowd, that’s rare. He’s also acknowledged the man-made causes of the climate crisis. Good for him. But that’s about it. On the other side of the fence, he happens to be staunchly anti-choice on reproductive rights. He’s historically opposed to gun control laws, including one that would’ve restricted gun purchases to one-per-month. Evidently Christie thinks Americans should be able to purchase multiple guns every month. He’s also certifiably insane when it comes to economic and fiscal policy, vetoing tax hikes on millionaires while cutting infrastructure and education spending. He’s never met a supply-side proposal he didn’t like, except when it comes to transporting his ass to soccer games. Then it’s spend, spend, spend.

In terms of his public style, the same personality that gives us honest press conferences like last week, as well as his unapologetic kudos for the president back in October, also gives us snippy goombah reactions to the press and the public at large, behavior that makes George W. Bush’s more petulant outbursts seem statesmanlike (links via Charles Pierce).

The far lefties are fawning over his fat ass.

      • conlakappa

The MSM keeps giving him a megaphone and acting he’s like something new off the shelf. He was a U.S. Attorney and a mean, vindictive one at that. He’s a St. Ronnie disciple and a GOPAC alum. Not anyone’s friend and no one’s idea of a good guy. Well, again, but for the MSM types who get to act all tolerant.

      • Which is proof that they care more about a theatrical performance than progressive policy.

Let ’em fawn over his fat ass. When he gets in office and fucks them over, they’ll be begging for the Obama years.

          • Camille

Fortunately, they won’t have the displeasure as he won’t be getting anywhere near the oval office.

    Rick Scott’s alternate Medicaid reality

    By Steve Benen

    Wed Jan 9, 2013 10:03 AM EST.

Several Republican governors have found themselves in an awkward spot. On the one hand, federal Medicaid expansion is an exceptional deal for their states, and they’d be foolish to turn it down. On the other, they’re supposed to hate everything about the Affordable Care Act for ideological reasons, and resist its provisions regardless of merit.

As a result, we see governors like Florida’s Rick Scott (R) looking for excuses to turn down the Medicaid expansion that common sense suggests he should accept.

In this clip, Scott talked on Monday to reporters in DC, and said he’s inclined to oppose the administration’s Medicaid policy on cost grounds: the expansion, he said would cost about $63 billion over the next decade overall, and Florida would be expected to cover $25.8 billion of that total.

The problem is, the governor knows what he’s saying isn’t true. As the Orlando Sentinel reported, “Gov. Rick Scott has taken to the airwaves in recent weeks to declare that the federal health-care law’s Medicaid expansion would come at a much higher cost to Florida than previous estimates. Turns out he may have been fudging the numbers.”

Health News Florida reported this week that state budget analysts told the governor in a series of emails weeks ago that his cost estimates are wrong. Scott doesn’t seem to care.

    ‘Deception’ vs. ‘Scandal’ on Race

Unlike Rhimes’ hit, NBC’s new series seems to tiptoe around what it means to have a black leading lady.
    By: Helena Andrews|Posted: January 8, 2013 at 12:32 AM

The comparisons were inevitable and obvious. NBC’s newest murder mystery, Deception, starring Meagan Good, looks a lot like ABC’s Revenge, a show that has chronicled the lifestyles of the rich and homicidal since last season.
But Deception has something in common with another ABC hit — something that isn’t getting much attention. I’m talking, of course, about Scandal, the Kerry Washington-led ensemble soap in which another strong (if flawed) black leading lady has made it her job to solve problems while being mired in her own.

In Deception, Good plays Joanna Locasto, a 30-something detective who grew up in the home of the Bowers as the daughter of their housekeeper. As children, Joanna and the Bowers’ druggie daughter (every rich family has one), Vivian, were besties. Decades later, Vivian turns up dead under shady circumstances, and Joanna is called upon to go undercover, living once again in the Bowers’ home while trying to uncover their carefully guarded secrets.

Both Joanna and Olivia can be viewed as outsiders of a sort. Although Olivia is the quintessential Washington insider in terms of her career trajectory, her personal life is another matter. She’s the perennial other woman when it comes to her relationship with President Fitzgerald “Fitz” Grant. Joanna’s angle as an enduring “houseguest” in the Bowers’ compound also emphasizes her role as an outside, an other. Like Olivia, Joanna isn’t an official member of the family, regardless of how fond they may be of her.

    • conlakappa

From all of the ads, it just seems like a bootleg Scandal. And I say that as someone who doesn’t watch Scandal. They are intentionally trying to mislead while hooking into that demographic.

  • According to the Twitter, Chuckles Todd asked Jay Carney about the trillion dollar coin. Here’s his response…

“The option here is for Congress to do its job and pay its bills” -Jay Carney, not quite ruling out $1T coin

      • Aquagranny911

I think it’s hilarious that the msm is legitimizing the stupid coin idea by asking about it.

      • conlakappa

That way they can quote themselves, which is what they like best. Gives credence to “some are saying…”

        • nellcote

Gives credence to “some are saying…”
Every single time they do that I want Carney to say, I hadn’t heard that, who exactly is saying it?

          • conlakappa

You know? Basic communication as well as what we’re taught him is you cannot just say something was said without attribution. Carney is just clinical enough to say it, I think!

          • Aquagranny911

I have so much issues with “some are saying” or my personal favorite, “everybody is doing/saying/believing this” which my teen children would try to con me with many ago.

My children lost this verbal battle & so will anyone else who is not willing to tell me just who is “saying” this & who “everybody” exactly is & how many “everybody” actually are.

    AIG Won’t Join Greenberg Lawsuit

    Congatulation msnbc.

With The Cycle you’ve created a show that literally has me diving for the remote to turn it off.

    • Miranda

I’ve never watched but from my twitter timeline each day…its some sort of bad sitcom meets bad politics type show.

      • nellcote

It’s really bad. A couple of the people are reasonable when they’re on other shows but just seem to come stupid when they’re on The Cycle. And don’t even start on SECupp.
It’s mostly irritating because I have msnbc on in the background most of the day and really have to urgently shut that show down before my head explodes from the stupidity.

PS ESPN please hire Toure away from msnbc so he doesn’t embarass himself further.

        • MsKitty

Nah, ESPN has more than filled the quota on annoying Black commentators (Stuart Scott, Stephen A. Smith, Michael Wilbom, etc., etc., etc.). NBC Sports Network is still in the early days so I’m sure he would fit in there.

          • Camille

I’m so glad that Stephen A. Smith was relegated to ESPN.
For a moment there he was all over the place offering “political commentary” and I was so worried he was going to be the face of black America in the media in the age of Obama.

Whatever happened to cause that fool to be shut down, I’m so grateful.

        • Toure is the Brainy Smurf of the Black community.

George Clinton Forced to Give Up Four Songs to Pay Lawyer’s Bills

Whenever Funkadelic’s One Nation Under a Groove is played, the residuals will no longer go to George Clinton. They will now go to Clinton’s lawyers to help repay past due bills.

The settlement with the Hendricks & Lewis law firm includes Groove and three other songs (Hardcore Jollies, The Electric Spanking of War Babies, Uncle Jam Wants You) for fees that Clinton accumulated between 2005 and 2008. Hendricks & Lewis successfully sued in 2010 for the money and George had managed to pay back $340,000 but that wasn’t enough so a federal judge ordered the songs to be turned over.

According to TMZ, the law firm may now sell or license the music as it deems fit to get the remaining money. When the past due amount is paid, the ownership of the songs will revert to Clinton.

OK, radio stations need to play this every hour to speed up George getting his royalties back!

    • Damnit, George!

    • MsKitty

If any of those turn up on commercials, I will not be pleased. I’m so sick of hearing the soundtrack of my childhood/young adult years in ads. On my TV in just the last month:

“Rapture” Blondie – Bailey’s Irish Cream
      “Situation” Yaz – Esurance
“Only Human” Human League – Liberty Mutual
“Superstition” Stevie Wonder – Bud Light (they really lose points for misinterpreting the lyrics)
“Heaven Must Be Like This” Ohio Players – McDonalds McRib Sandwich (this one was the most painful to see/hear)

What happened with coming up with original, catchy jingles? It’s called creativity, people.

      (/off-topic rant)

      • Miranda

Jingle writers went the way of the cool ass album cover. *sigh*, we will never get another “My bologna has a first name” or Prince riding naked on a unicorn.

        • MsKitty

I forgot another one. The Honda Odyssey commercial with a bunch of WASPy suburban moms rapping to Christmas in Hollis. Really folks?

          • TyrenM

Knowing they weren’t bangin Run, DMC and Jam Master Jay when they we’re kids.

I was finished when Kodak bought “True Colors”

I really liked that skinny little chica with the crazy clothes & hair. My girls used to sing and dance to “Girls Just Want to Have Fun”

“Girls Just Want to Have Fun”
What innocent times, even if we didn’t know it then.

          • Aquagranny911

Sweet times. I try not to go backwards but when I see the world now for my grandchildren I can’t help remembering how it “use to be” for my own children.

But we have got to be tough & move on with the idea that we all can make it better. We can’t go back. We can only go on.

Marching band plans to funk-ify inaugural parade

WASHINGTON — Even this year’s Presidential Inaugural Parade isn’t immune from a connection to the “fiscal cliff.”

The marching band from Grambling State University in Louisiana, the only historically black college slated to participate in the Jan. 21 parade, will perform the funk hit Early in the Morning.

Band Director Larry Pannell said he got the idea watching President Obama’s efforts — from early in the morning to late at night — to get a deal on the fiscal cliff.

“I think this president is going to catch the message,” Pannell said. “I know he’s going to catch the groove.”

She is all of like 20 years old. She can speak for women? Did I receive a proxy card and forget that I submitted it to her? We know that she and her ilk will claim that they forced the President to appoint whatever non-white/non-male person he does. You all on Twitter have a Re-Education of Shelby Knox.

    • nellcote

Didn’t we know this last month?

And like I said on Twitter, and I don’t give a damn who is offended by this cuz it’s freakin’ true. All these WHITE women on twitter and these liberal blogs accusing Barack Obama of shit that he had not done disturbs my spirit. This man is being accused of being a sexist and having issues with women, yet he has the most stellar record on women’s rights. These white women LYING on him got me feeling some kind of way. • Tafr

Yes itgurl you shut her down. What got me is that she had the nerve to lie. Now that crap may work for the so called feminist that follow her but not for those who actually pay attention. Why in the world would the president need to pledge diversity in his cabinet? This president is not the gay hating, white woman hating bigot they try to make him out to be. You notice they have two lines that they always stick to: the president broke his promise or he caved. They need to come up with something new seeing that it is a new year and all. Anyways thanks for telling her off.

    • itgurl_29

I just shut her up. Check out her timeline. I asked her to name a POTUS with a better record on women’s issues and her ass disappeard.

    • AxelFoley

The new meme. Been seeing it all day on other sites.

Now, the man who sent two very qualified women to the Supreme Court (a job they got 4Lyfe) and made one his Sec. of State (highest Cabinet position, if I’m not mistaken), had a woman as head of the EPA, a woman as U.N. Ambassador, and one as his top advisor, to along with one who will now be the former Sec. of Labor–now he needs to meet some quota probably set by NOW and their flunkies?

Hell, I remember in the first year of his Administration, the sorry ass media was trying to make something of the fact that many of the men in PBO’s Administration played pick-up basketball, but none of the ladies did.

Well, how many fuckin’ middle-aged women do you ever see playing ball? A man will play ball until…until his balls drop past his knees. Not too many women will play basketball after 40. When I used to go to the gym, I’d be playing against dudes in their 50s trying to hang with the young fellas (them dudes could still ball, too, using that old man strength–that shit is real, let me tell you). I ain’t never saw a mature woman on the court. Not to say it doesn’t happen, it’s just an extreme rarity.

      • Alma98

HAHAHAHAHA! (“A man will play ball until…until his balls drop past his knees”). And my sons can attest to that old man strength lol.

White House official: AG, HHS, VA heads to stay

WASHINGTON (AP) — A White House official says Attorney General Eric Holder and the secretaries of Health and Human Services and Veterans Affairs will remain with the Obama administration as it enters a second term.

She worked so hard and she deserves a break. I hope she will come back to California and spend some time resting and planning her next move. It would be great if she could run, in 2014, for Governor, in case Jerry Brown decides not to run. I’ve also had rumors that Senator Boxer may retire in 2016. Hilda Solis would be an excellent candidate to replace her. I certainly would be out there working hard for her.

And in 2003, leaders from EMILY’s List, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), AFL-CIO, and Sierra Club formed America Coming Together, the most sophisticated get-out-the-vote operation in the history of Democratic politics, to help elect presidential candidate John Kerry.

Ok, stop laughing…no really…stop laughing now.

I read that here and when my eyes roll back around, maybe I’ll finish reading it. LOL

Revealed: The Massive New Liberal Plan to Remake American Politics
A month after President Obama won reelection, America’s most powerful liberal groups met to plan their next moves. Here’s what they talked about.

    • Alma98

Yeah, yeah whatever they screw up everything they touch.

    • Uh, do they know that Kerry, like, uh…LOST?

And you called it about the NAACP’s looking for that limo lib money:

Brought together by the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, Communication Workers of America (CWA), and the NAACP, the meeting was invite-only and off-the-record.

…At the end of the day, many of the attendees closed with a pledge of money and staff resources to build a national, coordinated campaign around three goals: getting big money out of politics, expanding the voting rolls while fighting voter ID laws, and rewriting Senate rules to curb the use of the filibuster to block legislation. The groups in attendance pledged a total of millions of dollars and dozens of organizers to form a united front on these issues—potentially, a coalition of a kind rarely seen in liberal politics, where squabbling is common and a stay-in-your-lane attitude often prevails.

      • trose1

I didn’t know Green peace was still around. LOL

When I saw the NAACP was part of the meeting I know why NAACP been MIA.
      Ben Jealous needs to go.

This is the #1 issue NAACP should be concerned about. SMDH!

Calif. teachers fund moves to divest from firearms

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The nation’s largest teacher pension fund is taking the first step toward divesting from companies that manufacture guns and high-capacity magazines that are illegal in California.

The investment committee of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System unanimously approved a motion by state Treasurer Bill Lockyer on Wednesday.

CalSTRS is invested in private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, which owns the manufacturer of an assault rifle used in last month’s Connecticut school massacre. The pension fund also owns shares of Sturm, Ruger & Co. and Smith & Wesson Holding Corp., two publicly traded gun manufacturers.

  • I haven’t seen the Frontline documentary on Michelle Rhee yet, but one of the Twitter Fam, Allan Brauer (@allanbrauer), tweeted this blog post by Diane Ravitch who critics the doc and Rhee. I remember the poster ZachBoston speaking highly of Ms. Ravitch at the old blog….

My Commentary on the PBS Rhee Special

I was invited by Frontline to offer reactions to the documentary about Michelle Rhee. I was disappointed that the documentary did not mention that Rhee is now working on behalf of a far-right agenda of privatization; that Washington Teachers Union President George Parker now works for StudentsFirst; that Rhee’s “miraculous gains” as a teacher in Baltimore have been discredited. But I had space limitations. So this was my commentary:

I watched John Merrow’s documentary on “The Education of Michelle Rhee” with high anticipation. I wanted to see what she had learned from her experience, and what lessons there might be for the nation.

The documentary emphasizes her steely determination to do whatever she thought necessary to turn around the Washington, D.C. school system. She fired principals; she fired teachers; she closed schools. She told every principal that he or she must set a target for raising test scores. If they met it, their schools would win thousands of dollars; if they didn’t, they risked termination. She tied teachers’ evaluation to student test scores.

Inaugural Benediction To Be Delivered By Pastor Who Gave Vehemently Anti-Gay Sermon

By Josh Israel on Jan 9, 2013 at 1:30 pm

The Presidential Inauguration Committee announced Tuesday that the President Obama has selected Pastor Louie Giglio of the Georgia-based Passion City Church to deliver the benediction for his second inauguration. In a mid-1990s sermon identified as Giglio’s, available online on a Christian training website, he preached rabidly anti-LGBT views. The 54-minute sermon, entitled “In Search of a Standard – Christian Response to Homosexuality,” advocates for dangerous “ex-gay” therapy for gay and lesbian people, references a biblical passage often interpreted to require gay people be executed, and impels Christians to “firmly respond to the aggressive agenda” and prevent the “homosexual lifestyle” from becoming accepted in society. Below are some of the most disturbing views in the sermon.

    Christians must fight against LGBT-equality:

(2:40) We must not just sit quietly by and stick our heads in the sand and let whatever happens happen in our country. We’ve got to respond to the world that we live in. That is the mandate that comes to us as people of God. And this issue is coming more and more to the forefront every day.

(31:45) We must lovingly but firmly respond to the aggressive agenda of not all, but of many in the homosexual community. … Underneath this issue is a very powerful and aggressive moment. That movement is not a benevolent movement, it is a movement to seize by any means necessary the feeling and the mood of the day, to the point where the homosexual lifestyle becomes accepted as a norm in our society and is given full standing as any other lifestyle, as it relates to family.

why does the GOP not like Jack Lew?

How Close Were President Obama and Speaker Boehner to a Grand Bargain?

    By Matthew Yglesias

Posted Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at 3:47 PM ET

In fact, when Boehner called back on that Thursday afternoon, the 14th, in hopes of restarting the negotiations, it wasn’t Obama but rather one of his chief aides who Boehner had decided was the problem. For weeks leading up to the breakdown in talks, Boehner and his top lieutenants—Barry Jackson, his chief of staff, and Brett Loper, his policy aide—had been talking principally to Jack Lew and Rob Nabors at the White House. But they had become exasperated with Lew, who, in their view, talked a lot but offered few concessions. Lew, whose detailed knowledge of the budget outpaced anyone else’s in the room, always seemed to have a better idea than whatever Boehner was proposing, and these ideas seemed to Boehner like more complicated ways of describing positions they had already rejected. The problem with Lew, Boehner bluntly told the president when he called, is that he just didn’t know how to get to “yes.”

Boehner thought he had a better shot with Bill Daley, the president’s chief of staff, and Timothy Geithner, the Treasury secretary. Daley had made a point of reaching out to Boehner since joining the administration, and he was known to be a pragmatist and a dealmaker. Geithner, clearly rattled by the possibility that Treasury might default on its debt, had been issuing almost daily warnings to Congressional leaders about the mounting fear in the markets. Send me Daley and Geithner, Boehner told the president, and let’s see what we can do

    • JojoRaze

Jack Lew knew Boehner was running a scam. Boehner and the Repubs aren’t actually trying to lessen the debt and deficit, they want to cut the safety net. Everything from the Obama officials has been saying that Boehner has no clue about how the budget works and that is definitely coming from Lew who was at OMB in Clinton’s presidency.

It seems that boehner really believes the tea party’s lies that cutting foreign aid and other small ball stuff sand Lew is telling him that he’s nuts and a bigger idiot than Newt Gingrich who didn’t believe the right’s lies and negotiated deals that were reality based.

Sadly, this Rosa Brooks who’s been making her rounds attacking President Obama for not appointing the woman that would have been Ms Brooks ticket to relevance and access to power, is precisely why I’m glad Michelle Flournoy did not get the Defense job.

I’m so sick of all these self-serving, self-promoting assholes like Rosa Brooks who are hiding their anger that THEIR own personal ambitions were thwarted and her hopes of being some high profile counsel to the Secretary of Defense shut down, by running around to every media spot she can find to tout the greatness of Michelle Flournoy.

This is not at all about Michelle Flournoy, but everything to do with Rosa Brooks’ very own crushed personal ambitions.

What a fucking spiteful, petty liar.

As much as I like Michelle Flournoy, if Rosa Brooks is the sort of people she surrounds herself with, then thank God she wasn’t offered the gig. The sort of people one surrounds themselves with is very telling.

And in this instance, our Defense agenda is too important to gamble with the vicious tantrums of a staffer who has no qualms publicly attacking and belittling her boss’s boss – the President, at the drop of a hat.

We don’t need another version of the anti-President Obama staff-dom at the Defense department as we just had at the State Department for 4 years.

Rosa Brooks has shown such an incredible lack of judgement and maturity and is so pathetic, spiteful and short-sighted with her media tantrums and outbursts – and this is who Michelle Flournoy relied on for counsel?

If I were Michelle Flournoy I’d beg Rosa Brooks to stop. She’s not only completely made an arse of herself and destroyed whatever integrity or professionalism she ever possessed, but she’s quickly dragging down Michelle Flornoy with her.

Who knew that grown women were this silly and obnoxious when they don’t get what they want or think they’re entitled to.

For all the talk about female representation in the Administration, I’d be the first to say – not if they come in the form of this Rosa Brooks woman or those who hire people like her.

The President has a hard enough road ahead dealing with the mad republicans and the ridiculous left, the last thing he or America needs is the petty, vindictive, tantrum-throwing of selfish, self-serving brats like Rosa Brooks every time their personal needs and ambitions aren’t met.

The most important criteria President Obama needs to consider when filling any position as far as I’m concerned is – drama-free professionalism.

Actually, I’m one of those women (probably because I’ve always worked in an all male industry) who has absolutely no interest in this phony “fight for adversity – specifically women”.

I’ve hardly been impressed with the few I’ve happened into professionally along the way.

Actually contrary to conventional wisdom, I don’t long for a female president – or female anything.

I’ve always just wanted – and root for the best person always.

    • rikyrah

I wasn’t the only one watching her going W-T-F?

Had never heard of Michelle Flournoy …..I’m sure she’s fine…but, Brooks is not doing her any favor

      • Camille

She’s a pretty smart and sweet lady, but she could never have been able to deal with the vicious insanity that whoever will oversee all of Defense would have to contend with.

She’s great at policy but the Defense Secretary position calls for so much more than that in these peculiar times.

There’s just too many skill sets and hats the incoming Defense Secretary needs to have and must wear. And for that exact reason, Chuck Hagel is simply the best choice.

And someone should tell Rosa Brooks that appointment to serious cabinet positons in our government at this defining moment are just that, incredibly SERIOUS. And not “gestures”.

This is not the time for appointing people to the cabinet or accommodating the whims of the Rosa Brooks of the world as a “gesture” – as Ms. Brooks desperately wants for “women”.

“Gestures” are better saved for appointments to honorary positions to the Mickey Mouse club and such.

        • rikyrah

I like Hagel because he’d be the first enlisted man to become Sec. of Defense.

I like Hagel because he doesn’t bow down to the 51st state.

I like Hagel because HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT IRAQ.

And, I like Hagel because I think he’ll have the President’s back.

          • Camille

            Amen! Amen! Amen!

Isn’t it amazing how there are actually some old time Republicans who are infinitely more loyal to and have President Obama’s back more than some self-proclaimed Democrats.

Give me a Chuck Hagel over so many of these perpetually grandstanding, pea-cocking anti-President Obama “Democrats” any day!

          • nathkatun7

Bravo, Camille! Like you I will take Chuck Hagel, Ray LaHood, and Bob Gates anytime over some self-serving Democrats who always hedge, or are totally silent, when it comes to publicly supporting President Obama.

Bravo, Camille for your righteous commentary! I don’t know of any of the other Presidents, in my lifetime, who had to endure such petty attacks from the right, the left, and the media as President Obama has. The President who nominated two women to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, appointed five women to serve in his cabinet, and has nominated a record number of female federal judges, is now, all of a sudden, accused of being anti-women. Please spare me the manufactured outrage about “diversity!”

How quickly people forget! When President Obama appointed, in succession, two distinguished women to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, he was attacked for being anti-white males. Now, all of a sudden, he is being attacked for being anti-women, and anti-diversity just because some people didn’t get their pony. Sometimes I don’t know whether to laugh or be very angry at all these phony, manufactured, outrages against President Obama. The man hasn’t even taken the oath of office for a second term, but the blood-sucker vultures, from both the left and the right, and the media, are already after his blood!

    – –Soon, The Second Most Common STD May Not Be Able To Be Treated With Antibiotics – — –

—-There’s only one effective oral antibiotic treatment currently used to treat gonorrhea in North America — but that number might soon drop to zero, since researchers have identified the first cases of gonorrhea immune to the antibiotic.

A study released in the Journal of the American Medical Association on Tuesday found that nearly seven percent of the patients at a Toronto clinic remained infected with the disease even after a round of oral cephalosporins, the lone remaining oral antibiotic that can effectively treat the resistant strains of gonorrhea. This presents a potential long-term public health crisis for the United States, where gonorrhea is the second most common sexually transmitted disease with 321,849 cases reported in 2011. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) already issued guidance to physicians in August steering them away from oral cephalosporins as a first line treatment for gonorrhea, citing resistance risks.

According to the Australian School of Business, pharmaceutical companies’ greed presents one of the major roadblocks to developing better antibiotics:

    – — -Antibiotic resistance is becoming more common, but for pharmaceutical companies the “superbug” bacteria requiring treatment are less appealing targets for drug development than conditions that require long-term medication, such as statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs), anti-depressants, beta-blockers or anti-rheumatics, Taylor says.

    – – -NOW: – – –Onwards to the White House? Hillary Clinton: I am NOT retiring
    — —Hillary Clinton has fuelled speculation that she intends to run for the White House in 2016 by insisting that she has no intention of retiring after stepping down as U.S. Secretary of State in the coming weeks.

Asked by a reporter how she planned to spend her retirement, Clinton shot back: ‘I don’t know if that is a word I would use, but certainly stepping off the very fast track for a little while.’

–Her comments came during her first appearance before the press since she returned to work after several weeks of absence due to illness including a stint in hospital after a blood clot was detected between her brain and skull.
