Here is the clip of Rev Al this morning on the TJMS – its a must listen. Actually he’s going off on his show today too, questioning some of the people claiming they won’t support PBO because of his stance on ssm:

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Rev made a good point about folks not penalizing local politicians for legalizing SSM, but they want to not vote for PBO for giving an opinion.

      • crazycanuck

That is a very good point. Did anyone respond?

    • rikyrah

finally got to listen to it…Rev. Al was on fire!!

I have had it with the pious baloney

I hate to use a Gingrich term, and I don’t care much for religion in political commentary, but I’ve had it. Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Washington’s archbishop for the Catholic Church, is very upset that Georgetown University would invite Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to speak at its graduation ceremonies.

    • conlakappa

Wuerl is fairly new at this cardinaling. I think he is making a big show to let The Church know he’s standing tough and stuff. Have we not seen this before with people’s noses getting out of joint about the President at Notre Dame? Between this and the Fluke business, the have to teach those Jesuits a lesson.

Obamacare repeal would cost insurers $1 trillion

Posted by Sarah Kliffat 03:53 PM ET, 05/15/2012

Next month, America’s health insurance plans may lose $1 trillion in revenue.

It won’t have anything to do with a business deal gone awry, or
No Obamacare? That would cost health insurers $1 trillion. (Alex Wong – Getty Images) Americans dropping health coverage during the recession. Instead, $1 trillion is the amount of revenue that health insurance plans can expect to lose if the Supreme Court overturns the Affordable Care Act. The Court is expected to issue its opinion in late June

The figure comes from Bloomberg Government, where number crunchers have taken a look at what happens if the Supreme Court strikes down the Affordable Care Act and its expected expansion of health care coverage to 32 million Americans. They find that, should the Affordable Care Act be found unconstititional, insurance companies will lose $1 trillion in revenue between 2013 and 2020.

To put that in perspective, $1 trillion accounts for about 9 percent of all revenue that health insurers are expected to earn in the same period. It’s one-half of a percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product. Add up the annual revenues of America’s five largest banks – Bank of America, J.P. Morgan, Wells Fargo, Wachovia and U.S. Bancorp- and you’re still about $500 billion short of what health plans can expect to lose if the Supreme Court decides against Obamacare.

“It’s the sheer size of the number that was startling,” says Bloomberg Government health care analyst Matt Barry. “I don’t know if people fully appreciate the stakes involved here. It’s not just politics – there’s a lot of money, and a lot to lose.”

The majority of that loss – $880 billion – would be from the 16 million Americans expected to purchase coverage on the individual market. Two-thirds of that revenue would be in the form of federal subsidies, for low- and middle-income Americans to purchase coverage. The rest would come from individuals, responsible for whatever part of the premium subsidies do not cover.

Are you telling me that Wiscousin could re-elect Walker again? wow

    • Ebogan63

Would not suprise me in the slightest.

    • Miranda

Yep. Never underestimate the stupidity of racists. They believe that voting for Walker is also a vote against that Kenyan socialist in the WH. That’s what all those ads from GOP SuperPacs keep telling them.

      • Alma98

Comment # 13 says it all about the stupidity and racism of folks here.

        • BoomerGal

Yeah, it does. It tells me they don’t know the first damn thing about the history of their own country. It makes me livid when I think of all the immigrants who’ve come here and still come and inside of two or three years are damn near millionaires. We built this country and are still at the bottom of the rung. What happened to the days (before the riots) when soul food restaurants were plentiful; record shops were on every corner; hair dressers were everywhere (the one thing that survived); barbershops thrived and bar-b-que stands on every major street? There were even a few successful Black owned night clubs! By-gone days.
I love to hear immigrants say this is the greatest country on earth and I reply, “yeah for YOU!”

          • Miranda

Actually we used to own banks, insurance companies, construction companies – not many at all left now.

          • BoomerGal

The construction business for us didn’t last long b/c as the unions were ushered in the big contracts went to union workers PLUS we couldn’t get bonded! Thus, the construction business was short lived.

          • Miranda

True. I live in the personal building of the oldest and probably only right now, but largest black owned construction company in the US. He’s retired and sons run the company – his office for his foundation and personal business is down the hall and I’ve often wanted to stop Mr. Russell and ask how he did it.

        • dannie22

          That comment is 100% accurate.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

I read on the Twitters that Ed Schultz has been whining about PBO not campaigning for the recall. He knows it’s a good chance Walker could be re-elected, so he’s making pre-emptive strikes against PBO.

      • Miranda

Walker wouldn’t BE in office if it wasn’t for the likes of Ed Schultz and the dummies that voted against their own interests in 2010.

        • BoomerGal

          OOOOh girl! Say it again!!

        • conlakappa

Nah, Ed actually told people not to vote, which feels a lot worse to me.

Of course they won’t ask Rmoney about any plan he has to address it, and will pretend PBO has not tried to address it.

    • GN

Why certainly, US households don’t understand the concept of spending money on self-improvement in order to eventually raise quality of life altogether. One would think that people routinely take on student loan debt, which is of course not the case. We prefer to stay in economic ruts rather than spend money to eventually make more money. /rollseyes

Lawyer says Zimmerman medical report leaked to boost case

The attorney representing Trayvon Martin’s parents said Wednesday a medical report detailing injuries sustained by the man who said he shot Trayvon was leaked to bolster his claims of self-defense.
Lawyer Benjamin Crump said he has not seen the medical report but questions who leaked the information and why.

“It was leaked for a beneficial purpose,” he said, “certainly to help George Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense.”

What’s amazing is not that a defense counsel would leak “evidence” to make his client look sympathetic; amazing is the noncurious, unprofessional manner in which the media is disseminating this “evidence” without even bothering to question the ridiculousness of a so-called severely injured man bypassing the emergency room (and the hospital altogether) to get a doctor’s note from the family physician. It reeks of such bullshit, but some media stenographers will spread the story anyway, especially at ABC.

He has spent his time mapping out his library, making speeches, hosting injured veterans for Texas bicycle rides and making clear how glad he is to be out of the nation’s capital.

But gingerly, the 43rd president is beginning to add his voice back into the national dialogue. A month ago, he spoke publicly in favor of one of his defining domestic legacies, the tax cuts that still divide the country. Two months from now, he plans to publish a book outlining strategies for economic growth. And on Tuesday, he made a rare return to Washington to promote freedom overseas.

Charlie Rangel: Don’t need Obama’s backing

By MJ LEE | 5/16/12 1:09 PM EDT Updated: 5/16/12 2:50 PM EDT

Rep. Charlie Rangel, the 81-year-old congressman from Harlem who’s facing serious primary competition in his bid for a 22nd term, said Wednesday he can do without President Barack Obama’s backing.

“Do you think you need the president’s support this time around, congressman?” Rangel was asked on CNN.

The congressman swiftly answered, “Of course not,” before adding nonetheless that he would “welcome” the support.

Will Smith: My son asked Obama about ‘the aliens’

Actor Will Smith says he recently found himself in a “not cool” situation when his 13-year-old son, Jaden, asked President Barack Obama about the existence of extraterrestrial aliens.

“I was at the White House with my family and we were getting a tour and, you know, Barack and Michelle and Sasha and Malia,” Smith recalled to BBC Radio 1 host Chris Moyles on Wednesday. “And it’s me, Jada and the kids and we’re walking through the White House. And the night before Jaden had said to me, ‘Dad, I got to ask the president about the aliens.’ I was like, ‘Dude, no.’ It’s not cool. It’s not cool. It’s embarrassing.”

“You have to take that opportunity,” Moyles observed.

“I was like, ‘Jaden, do not ask the president,’” Smith continued. “So we get into the Situation Room and Jaden gets the look in his eyes and he leans over and says, ‘Dad, what’s my punishment?’ And I was like, ‘Jaden, do not.’ And you know, Barack is talking about the Situation Room and Jaden says, ‘Excuse me, Mr. President.’ I was like, ‘Hey, Barack, man…’ And Barack said, ‘Don’t tell me.’ And in perfect form, and this is why he’s the president, and he stopped and looked at Jaden said, ‘The aliens, right?’”

Sorry for the HuffPo lank but dude is on point about Mittens and his church’s racism:

Some have suggested that the president’s support of marriage equality may erode votes within his African-American base. That analysis is ridiculous upon its face. Mitt Romney has some explaining to do with African Americans; for example, why were black men of African descent not allowed to be priests in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) until 1978? That’s not a typo; I wrote 1978.

Black men of African descent were prohibited from a whole host of basic LDS activities and rituals, which require achievement of the church’s highest degree of salvation. One such ritual is having a marriage performed in the church. Indeed, black men were second-class worshipers. In 1849 church president Brigham Young said, “The Lord had cursed Cain’s seed with blackness and prohibited them the priesthood.” Later, in 1852, Young concluded, “Any man having one drop of the seed of [Cain] … in him cannot hold the priesthood and if no other prophet ever spoke it before, I will say it now in the name of Jesus Christ, I know it is true and others know it.” According to Young, the seed of Cain produced people with black skin and flat noses. So began 126 years of discrimination by the LDS church against black men and their families.

In 1964 both houses of Congress passed the Civil Rights Act, which President Lyndon Johnson signed into law. The act ended formal discrimination against African Americans. Nevertheless, the Mormon church continued formally preventing black men from joining the priesthood for an additional 14 years, despite the fact that in this particular faith tradition, joining the priesthood is a basic achievement that most male members attain.

    • rikyrah

I have written many times about how I could never vote for someone brought up in the Mormon church, and I haven’t changed my mind. HOW could I trust someone, who went to church, week after week, being told that I would be going to hell..

NOT for any deed on Earth

      but BECAUSE I EXISTED.

      PERIOD.

    • Guns3000

He made some decent points but this why Dems always get thrown off message because they concentrate on things that won’t help them win. First off, no one is going to hold Mitt Romney to that type of standard so why even bother? Secondly, the majority of whites that will vote for PBO believe racism is a thing of the past and that AA who complain about it just simply have a chip on their shoulder. Last week it was bullying when Mittens was a teenager. Now it’s Mormon church policy up until 1978. I’m not hopping on those losing issues.

Gay marriage debate: Sophia Nelson, Michael Eric Dyson to debate on MSNBC’s ‘Ed Show’

President Barack Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage has touched off a debate within the African-American community, with black churchgoers and pastors taking sides over an issue some call a question of civil rights, and others say is a matter of Biblical truth.

That debate spilled onto the airwaves and Twitter last Thursday, when Michael Eric Dyson, an MSNBC contributor and Georgetown University professor, called out what he called “sexual rednecks” in the black church, who oppose equal marriage rights for gays and lesbians — and he named names: Roland Martin of TV One, Baltimore pastor Rev. Jamal Bryant, who has said he felt “jilted” by the president’s support for gay marriage, and Sophia Nelson, an author and contributor to theGrio.

I couldn’t watch. No forum is appropriately palatable for that discussion for my liking but Ed’s show?

  • Aquagranny911

OT: Is anyone else here who posts at TPV having trouble with the new Disqus format they are using? I’ve gotten so frustrated that I may stop posting there. I will just read. It makes me sad because I have been a huge Deaniac supporter for two years & like to let him know I’m paying attention.

    • Alma98

What kind of problem are you having AG?

      • Aquagranny911

Difficult to sign on, getting kicked off in the middle or when posting a comment & not being able to sign back on without logging off. However it looks like they have returned to the old format so I hope they stick with it.

        • rikyrah

I thought it was only me. I hated their new system

          • Aquagranny911

Me too & “refresh” often meant having to sign back on again. I love Deaniac. I think he has a great blog. He’s way smart & tells it like it is with facts. I want him to keep it up. We need him through this election.

Can we just somehow hold Disqus chips for ransom until the election so we don’t have to fig with techie BS?

          • conlakappa

Yes, I wrote to Deaniac about it. Send him a note.

          • Aquagranny911

Mi Hijo already knows my opinion which I gave him at the beginning. He is a sweet kiddo, but too much in love with the tech, imo.

Maybe your opinion was more persuasive. He is well used to me being a cranky old biddy & he knows I ♥ him no matter what.

          • conlakappa

You and I have joked about it a long time but this not being able to even log on was new. He and I had an exchange about it earlier this week.

Trayvon Martin killed by single gunshot fired from ‘intermediate range,’ autopsy shows

    By NBC News and msnbc.com

Florida teenager Trayvon Martin died from a single gunshot wound to the chest fired from “intermediate range,” according to an autopsy report reviewed Wednesday by NBC News.

The official report, prepared by the medical examiner in Volusia County, Fla., also found that the 17-year-old Martin had one other fresh injury – a small abrasion, no more than a quarter-inch in size – on his left ring finger below the knuckle.

Separately, a medical report on Martin’s alleged killer, 28-year-old George Zimmerman, prepared by his personal physician the day after Martin’s shooting in Sanford, Fla., on Feb. 26, found that the Neighborhood Watch volunteer suffered a likely broken nose, swelling, two black eyes and cuts to the scalp. That report, first reported Tuesday by ABC News, also was reviewed by NBC News.

    • lamh35

So one injury on Martin, but all those injuries on Zimmerman. Would”t Trayvon have had more injuries to his hand if he’d broken Zimmerman’s nose and given him 2 black eyes?

Or is Zimmeman’ claiming that Trayvon was on top of Zimmerman and Zimmerman was face down? Then Zimmerman would have had to turn off and shoot Trayvon???

    • Alma98

ABC news owes an apology to the Martin family.

    • Aquagranny911

The police bungled this so damn bad it makes me crazy. They let Zimmerman waltz away with out gathering evidence so now his family & the defense can make up all the “evidence” that money can buy.

No way Trayvon fought Zimmerman leaving those “fake” injuries with out extensive injuries to Trayvon’s hands. One quarter inch abrasion to one knuckle does not cut it.

Another thing that disturbs me is that they said the bullet was fired from “intermediate range” That says from a distance of more than three feet, lest Trayvon should have had powder burns on his clothes. This seems to give even more of a lie to Zimmerman’s story.

Police missteps in Trayvon Martin case hurt prosecution

SANFORD, Fla. — The killing of Trayvon Martin here two and a half months ago has been cast as the latest test of race relations and equal justice in America. But it was also a test of a small city police department that does not even have a homicide unit and typically handles three or four murder cases a year.

An examination of the Sanford Police Department’s handling of the case shows a series of missteps — including sloppy work — and circumstances beyond its control that impeded the investigation and may make it harder to pursue a case that is already difficult enough.

    – - – -Angela Corey lashes out at critics of Marissa Alexander prosecution – - –

    – — -Duval County, Florida prosecutor Angela Corey has something to say to those who have expressed outrage over the prosecution of Marissa Alexander: they are misguided, and missing the point.

Corey, the state attorney who prosecuted the 31-year-old mother of three for firing a gun near where her husband, Rico Gray, was standing with his two sons, had already gained national notoriety in the prosecution of the man who killed Trayvon Martin. Now, she is facing the backlash over a case her office put to rest in March, with many of the same people who praised her for bringing second degree murder charges against George Zimmerman in the Martin killing, condemning her for putting Alexander away.

The fiery prosecutor, known for her fierce victim’s advocacy, takes issue with the protests and the outrage on Alexander’s behalf, saying the Jacksonville woman was the aggressor, not the victim, in the August 2010 incident.

“Because she was not fleeing from an abuser,” Corey told theGrio in answer to why Florida’s Stand Your Ground law was not applied in Alexander’s case, even though Florida’s Supreme Court has ruled in the past that a woman being abused in her own home by her husband has no duty to flee. “A judge heard all the facts and evidence and said that this was not a case of ‘Stand Your Ground,’ Corey said. “You have to compare what [Marissa Alexander] said to what the victims said. There were two young children there as well. None of the physical evidence corroborates her story. There was the 911 call … and you can clearly hear the distress in Rico Gray’s voice. They had a verbal argument [in which] he said ‘I’m outta here,’ and she said, ‘I’ve got something for you.’”

oops, looks like the GOP got issues lol

RNC, Romney campaign will erect new organization to bypass state GOP

Fed up with an inept and self-destructive GOP apparatus in Nevada, the Republican National Committee and the Mitt Romney campaign have decided to erect a “shadow state party” in this critical swing state, sources confirmed today.

“They are still bogged down in the minutiae of whether Romney will be the presumptive nominee,” scoffed a GOP strategist familiar with the details of the restructuring. “We don’t have time for that when the Obama campaign already is in full campaign mode. We have no use for them (the state GOP).”

Soliciting prayer warriors. My mom’s sister (my aunt) was taken to the hospital at the 6am this morning. Her sisters and brother in NOLA are at the hospital now and her son (my cousin, almost like my brother, we are 1 year apart) is on his way from Houston now.

My family is young (my mom’s the oldest and she’ll be 52 in June) so this aunt is only 50 years old, but she’s a long term smoker (been smoking as long as I’ve been alive…35 years) she’s beaucoup neurotic and she works too damn hard (she has 2 jobs, but she ALWAYS) seem to be working. – — —The House has just passed a watered-down version of the Violence Against Women Act, by a vote of 222 to 205. The GOP-backed iteration of the bill strips out the provisions to protect undocumented, Native American, and LGBT victims that were included in the Senate version.

VAWA is usually a non-controversial, bipartisan effort, but this year has become a political talking point, with Republicans trying to slow its passage and providing fewer protections for victims. A misogynistic ‘men’s rights’ group has even voiced its support for the GOP’s version of the bill.

Meanwhile, a female Republican joined other women Senators in pressuring the House GOP to pass the Senate’s version.

The House also voted down, by a vote of 187 to 236, a request to send the bill back to the Judiciary Committee. Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI) introduced the motion, saying that the Republican’s bill violates the confidentiality a victim is entitled to by telling her abuser that she called the cops.
