The Morning Plum: Why Romney is struggling in Ohio
    By Greg Sargent

With the two campaigns locked in a struggle over Obama’s auto rescue, a central issue in Ohio, today’s New York Times/CBS/Quinnipiac poll finds Obama holding a lead in the state among likely voters, 50-45. The race is probably tighter than that; the Real Clear Politics average puts Obama’s lead at 2.4 points.

    …………………………………………

For one thing, Romney has decidely not shaken his “47 percent” problem in Ohio. Only 44 percent think Romney cares about the needs and problems of people like them; 52 percent say he does not. By contrast, Obama’s numbers on this question are 62-36. Obama holds a big advantage on who would help the middle class, 54-42.

What’s more, Romney is not winning over blue collar whites in Ohio at anywhere near the rate he’s winning them nationally. The poll finds that Obama is running nearly even with Romney among white Ohio voters without college degrees. It’s always dangerous to read too much into one poll. But it seems fair to speculate that Obama’s auto-bailout — which helped save an industry linked to one in eight Ohio jobs — and the Obama camp’s nonstop attacks on Romney for opposing it could help explain these numbers, and Romney’s general inability to close the gap.

Romney is trying to deal with this by running new ads touting himself as the true friend of the auto industry and casting the auto rescue as a sellout to China. But fact checkers — and the Ohio press — have widely called out his ads as false. And another finding in today’s NYT/CBS poll suggests this could be problematic: Only 45 percent think Romney is honest and trustworthy, versus 50 percent who don’t; for Obama those numbers are 54-42.

Obama camp: No, there won’t be any last-minute ‘wave’ for Romney
    By Greg Sargent
With polling averages showing that Obama holds a small but meaningful edge in the electoral college in enough states to put him well past 270, Republicans have fallen back on a prediction: A last minute shift in the electorate will put Mitt Romney over the top.

As Mike Allen put it this morning, many Republicans “fear Romney’s momentum has stalled” and are now banking on “some tectonic shift in the country hasn’t been fully detected by pollsters or explained by the press.” This is a variation of the other argument Romney supporters have been making for some time — that a last minute break Romney’s way will ensure another outcome like 1980.

The question, though, is whether the rise in early voting is making this scenario more and more remote.

On a conference call with reporters, David Axelrod derided the “myth of the wave that it’s all going to break in his favor.” He added: “This professed momentum from the Romney campaign is really faux-mentum.”

Unfortunately, I still see some moronic commentors buying into ‘he could win the EC and lose the popular vote’ bs and going on about ‘the legacy of Debate #1′ when in fact, some pollsters went to LV screens that wiped out the RV advantage PBO has enjoyed this entire campaign.

    Six ads, one common denominator

    By Steve Benen
    Wed Oct 31, 2012 12:33 PM EDT

We talked earlier about the return of Mitt Romney’s welfare lie in a new swing-state ad, which came on the heels of Romney’s auto industry lie in an Ohio ad. And it got me thinking about how long it’s been since I saw an honest campaign commercial from the Republican nominee.

I went through the Romney campaign’s website and YouTube channel, and found that Team Romney has unveiled six English-language television ads since the third and final debate with President Obama last week, an average of nearly one per day.

    ………………………………………

I’m not cherry picking the offensive ads built around falsehoods; I’m merely listing all of the ads Romney has unveiled since the third debate.

    ——————————————————————————–

This isn’t normal. It’s also not healthy for our democracy. Mitt Romney — who keeps telling reporters about how great his “momentum” is — has reached some kind of Peak Lying moment in which he spews falsehoods at an almost uncontrollable pace.

Anyone visit YouTube and see those “I’ve Changed My Vote” videos with those paid actors? Of course I don’t watch them, but you can still see them on the sidebar of the page, and sometimes they start up automatically when you try to check out a video.

Anyways, I was checking out a video yesterday and one of those funky ass videos started auto playing. I usually catch it in time to either skip the ad, refresh the page and hope it disables it, or go back one page altogether. Well, I wasn’t paying attention and the ad started playing, but guess who was in it?

    Punk ass Artur Davis.

Yeah, this nigga will never be able to come back. When shit REALLY goes down, I hope I get to see him get worked over by his GOP buddies.

Impact of voter suppression efforts less than feared

Voting rights advocates have successfully pushed back against a national effort to restrict Americans’ ability to cast a ballot, with far fewer people disenfranchised than feared.

“Strikingly, nearly all the worst new laws to cut back on voting have been blocked, blunted, repealed, or postponed,” according to a new report from NYU’s Brennan Center for Justice. “Laws in 14 states were reversed or weakened. As a result, new restrictions will affect far fewer than the 5 million citizens we predicted last year.

I don’t respect Mayor Bloomberg’s decision to disallow President Obama’s request to survey the storm damage in NYC by helicopter. First of all, Pres O is not frivolous; if he is asking to see the wreckage for himself, it is so that he can better convey the level of urgency to his people who are marshalling resources, not for shits and giggles. Second of all, it’s not like he asked to drive a motorcade through the city, which would have been a logistics issue. I’m no expert, but where would it tax the city’s police resources for President Obama to fly out in a helicopter from Jersey, view the damage, and then return?

Bloomberg disappoints yet again; he claims to not be “dissing” the President but I don’t believe him; petty and small. Please correct me if I’m wrong about this story.

    • Miranda

You aren’t wrong and I would safely bet the vast majority of New Yorkers feel the same way.

      • GN

Mayor Bloomberg seems to be thinking of himself and his issues with the President but he needs to be thinking of what’s best for the city and the people who can help us, President Obama the most significant amongst them. I was pissed watching the clip.

        • Camille

Andrew Cuomo is no better. You actually get the sense that they coordinate their attacks and disrespect of the President.

    • nellcote

Did someone ask him about it? The clip I saw had him just bringing up PBO visiting out of nowhere. It did come off disrespectful for no reason.

      • GN

I suspect he was asked, but I was very disappointed; it came off as disrespectful to me too. I don’t like to see President Obama treated any which way.

    • AxelFoley

How can a mayor of a city disallow the President anything? He’s the President, heading up disaster relief on a federal level, not one of Bloomberg’s constituents.

      • nellcote

Fuck Bloomberg. If he won’t provide local security for PBO I don’t want him there.

    • JojoRaze

As a NY’er Bloomberg is lucky he’s not running for re-election again. PBO is very popular here and truth be told I’m kind of sad that he’s only come here to fundraise. But this is America and you have to have money to win elections.

NYC residents would have appreciated a visit that wasn’t fundraising related, one that was meant to comfort us since the city’s way-of-life has faltered. I mean, one hundred homes in Breezy Point Queens burned to the ground due to Sandy and Manhattan below 34St is without electricity, and basically cut off from civilization. And most of all, the subway has not run for three days. Allowing the President to come by and see this level of destruction is good common-sense for any public official so the President can put in a good word for us to FEMA to give us extra help.

Bloomberg is just mad that PBO didn’t bow down and worship him and his financial wizardry when they went golfing. His name is Barack Hussein Obama II, not Benson. And even then, Benson could cut his employers when they were acting too out of pocket.

But then again…Bloomberg showed himself when he called Elizabeth Warren a socialist. But I’m still salty that Chris Christie rolled out the red carpet and Bloomberg said “Talk to the hand.”

    • Camille

Michael Bloomberg has never been anything but blatant, petty and spiteful in his constant public disrespect of President Obama.

Bloomberg actually goes out of his way to insert himself into conversations that have absolutely nothing to do with him, just to take a jab or two at President Obama.

It’s almost bordering on the irrational and obsessive. No different from the rightwing nuts in many instances especially since Bloomberg also employs their talking points in many of his attacks on President Obama.

From Bloomberg’s constant silly attempts at one-upping and humiliating the President to his never ending embarrassing attempts at auditions at “looking” and “sounding” “presidential” in his bid to show the American people that he would be “better” at it than President Obama.

Because being wealthy, buying a Mayoral position and banning super-sized soft drinks somehow trumps killing Bin Laden, saving America from a depression and renewing and drastically improving America’s image around the world.

And never mind that his pricey personal pollsters have told Bloomberg time and again that he’ll never win if he ran. Probably only serving to enrage Bloomberg all the more.

Bloomberg suffers from the same disease that afflicts Trump, Pataki, Romney, Rendell, etc.

It’s the idea that this dignified, smart, compassionate, authentic, calm, down to earth, unassuming, evolved, focused, accomplished, amazing black guy with no rich papa or built in legacy advantages, took the world by storm and not only succeeded but earned the unprecedented support, love and respect of the whole world.

And all without asking or needing the self-appointed, self-important king makers. Worse still, he became President of the United States before they ever could! And knowing full well they never could no matter their wealth or hard they tried.

For Michael Bloomberg and many of his friends, the curious and convenient playing up of their relationships with Bill Clinton – many just recently established and expanded upon strictly for these purposes by the way, is at first glance meant to convey that their disdain of and discontent with President Obama is based solely upon their all-knowing “professional” disapproval or dissatisfaction with the President’s performance. Lol.

Never mind that we all know better the root and motivation of the petty and spiteful resentments the Michael Bloomberg’s of the world publicly and privately embody and manifest in their every word and action towards this President.

And never mind that once President Obama, after his successful second term, is no longer the common enemy – and the battle for the presidency once again revs up between Hillary and Andrew Cuomo or even Bloomberg himself, they’ll publicly turn on each other with their shallow, self-serving alliances previously formed to attack President Obama, completely unravelled.

And as with every single person who sets out on a suicide mission to diminish or destroy President Obama, Michael Bloomberg is headed clutching his envy, pettiness and spite straight down to the pits of hell to languish with his pals Donald Trump etc.

From there they get to watch, writhing in their jealousy and pain as Barack Obama continues to soar effortlessly with the whole world solidly behind him.

And it simply drives them nuts.

      • AxelFoley

        All this.

And when President Obama’s two terms are up, watch them come crawling to black voters, begging for their support as they put their hat in the ring.

Oh, I’m gonna love seeing them come to black folks asking us to support them. They’ll have the usual coons like Travesty and Corny talking them up to us, but that shit ain’t gonna fly.

Them days are gone forever. We won’t forget how you treated this President. I promise you, we won’t. We gonna tell Juicymoufed and Snagglenaps where to go and send them back to you with their tails between their legs with a message for you: Fuck you, fuck yo mama, and fuck your candidacy.

    — —President Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney are tied in North Carolina, according to a new survey released Wednesday from in-state Democratic-leaning Public Policy Polling. Both candidates get 49 percent of likely voters, essentially no change from the 48-48 tie the firm found last week in their North Carolina poll.

“If Obama ends up pulling out another narrow victory in the state he’ll have done it during the early voting period,” PPP wrote in their analysis. “Among those who report already having voted he’s ahead by a 58/41 margin. Romney leads 58/40 with those who haven’t voted yet and he’ll really need them to turn out if he’s going to catch up with Obama.”

    – – – -Obama strategists have suggested on and off this cycle — and earlier — that the president could make a play to compete in Arizona, a traditionally conservative-leaning state that has become more competitive thanks to a growing Latino population. As recently as late September, the AP wrote that Barack Obama was “considering making a late play for traditionally Republican Arizona.”

Well, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina finally shut the door on that possibility Wednesday morning, telling reporters on a conference call that Obama’s path to 270 electoral votes will not include the state.

Messina called Arizona an “enticing prospect” and said that public and private polling has shown the state fairly close. But the Obama adviser emphasized that the president expects to win the election with the votes of more traditional swing states.

“Our map is set, unlike the Romney campaign, which is flailing, trying to make the map different than it is. I believe on the ground we continue to show real enthusiasm to get to 270 electoral votes in all these battleground states,” Messina said. “We understand the several maps we need to get there.”

“Messina gives up on Arizona” implies that Obama was dedicating resources to Arizona.

As recently as late September, the AP wrote that Barack Obama was “considering making a late play for traditionally Republican Arizona.”

If Obama was “considering making a late play for AZ” this means he was NOT playing in AZ.

That doesn’t sound like retreat or that they can’t win it. What they are saying is that they are putting there money into the states that the have to take and if they win Arizona it willl be icing on the cake. Obama is already over 300 electoral votes. Getting Arizona is more like a prize.

But the dumb media has to set the Obama is doomed story line.

      • goldenstar

The header is kinda misleading. Messina is stating that the electoral sum of 270 will not include AZ and that’s all.

I am most concerned about the Senate race. Let’s see how this plays out…

        • Aquagranny911

AZ is used to being ignored. Since 1912, when a lot of Washington protested our statehood, we are well accustomed to being that “piece of desolate land populated by Indians & Mexicans.”

        Maybe things are changing….

    • Aquagranny911

This is the biggest piece of fucking bullshit! I hate politico!

Stupid headline is totally misleading as usual.

We in AZ never expected OFA or DNC to give us scarce resources. We knew this was a national battle and that we were going to have to do a lot all on our own. AZ has been like a polluted well for 4 years. It has been up to us on the ground to purify the waters again.

We KNOW that PBO has NOT given up on us & we have NOT given up on him! We are STRONG & don’t need anyone to hold our hands so we GOTV!

Senor Messina, I understand exactly what you said & what you meant. You have not “written us off” you have trust in us to do the work. I will do all I can to help Arizona deliver that “frosting” for PBO’s cake on November 6!

FUCK YOU POLLTICO!!! FUCK YOU TO THE INFIERNO!!!

I don’t know how it will all come out & some days I do worry. I won’t lie about that. But I never give up! I just will not give up!

About those bailouts that didn’t work.

Ally Financial Inc, the U.S. auto lender 74 percent owned by the U.S. government, on Wednesday said it has repaid $2.9 billion in debt issued under a financial-crisis-era program designed to bolster confidence in the banking system.

The former auto lending arm of General Motors Co paid back $2.9 billion in debt guaranteed by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp’s Temporary Liquidity Guarantee Program.

The debt, issued on Oct 30, 2009, came due on Tuesday. The lender plans to repay the remaining $4.5 billion in debt it issued under the program in December.

Other financial institutions such as Bank of America Corp have been repaying debt issued under the program.

“The TLGP enabled Ally to access another source of liquidity during a time when there were limited options for financial institutions,” said Jeff Brown, Ally’s executive vice president of finance and corporate planning.

Ally is trying to refocus its business on U.S. auto lending and banking. Its Residential Capital mortgage unit filed for bankruptcy in May, and it has been selling international operations in a bid to speed up payment to U.S. taxpayers.

Ally, once known as GMAC, received $17 billion in bailouts from the U.S. government during the financial crisis. Including dividend payments, it has paid back $5.8 billion

    • nellcote

Christie was so effusive in his praise for PBO I half expected him to say he wanted PBO re-elected so he could continue to work with him.

I was struck by the use of DoD resources, C130s for tranport and Navy ships off the coast, etc. Nation building at home!

      • Aquagranny911

Nellcote, did you know that our Navy was prepared & wanted to respond immediately during Katrina but was held back by Bush incompetence?

What is happening now is truly “Nation building at home” & our Navy loves doing this kind of thing. They have the training & resources to do a lot to help.

        • nellcote

I did not know that about Katrina but I’m not surprised. That whole renting cruise ships (private sector!) to house people nonsense popped into mind though.

Looking at the coastal devistation reminded me of the Tsunami in Indonesia where the Navy did such stellar work though.

I love seeing the military used for peaceful projects!

Damn America has had 43 white presidents and ain’t never seen a black man all up in his grill like these white males.. what is up? Damn their insecurity and inferiority complex is freaking amazing. It is weird, they feel less of a man with him at the helm

Why they so insecure? Damn I bet that’s how Tapper and Todd all feel, just reek of inferiority complex

Damn they obsess over blackness too damn much… Donald go live your life, trust me, Obama ain’t thinking of your ass. Damn its weird, this obsession is unhealty. I bet they dream about Obama too..

It is really literally killing them.

I firmly believe a man is as known by his enemies as much as his friends; and PBO’s enemies make me love him more. Ed Rendell is a snake, and I’m glad PBO hasn’t made him head bottle washer of anything in his administration.

    – – – – -39 reasons we should re-elect President Obama, in case you know anybody who’s asking: send them this. (And TPC’s links and lists of more accomplishments here)

☻ The first bill President Obama signed was the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, to help women fight back when they don’t get equal pay for equal work.

☻ His Recovery Act supported millions of jobs and helped to stave off a second Great Depression.

☻ He pushed for and won middle-class tax cuts that benefitted every American worker, and saved the typical family $3,600 in taxes over the last four years.

☻ President Obama rescued the auto industry, and now GM and Chrysler are healthier than they’ve ever been. The American auto industry has added nearly a quarter of a million jobs since June 2009—and they most likely wouldn’t exist right now without President Obama’s leadership.

☻ He doubled funding for Pell Grants, helping to make college more affordable for nearly 10 million families.
☻ His student loan reform ended billions in subsidies to banks serving as middlemen and reinvested those savings directly into students.

☻ The President established the American Opportunity Tax Credit, worth up to $10,000 over four years of college.

☻ His Race to the Top Initiative helped spur nearly every state to raise academic standards.

☻ His tax cuts, social-welfare programs, and economic policies lifted nearly 7 million Americans above the federal poverty line in 2010.

☻President Obama has signed 18 tax cuts for small businesses since taking office.
