Isn’t your husband just recovered from his ankle break?!

          • Aquagranny911

I didn’t say he had to do it. I said I would try it. He tends to use too much force anyway & the cork could take out the nearest bystander or maybe go into orbit. I have a much gentler touch.

    • conlakappa

      Fourth of all, be French!

    • gn

      Wow, how cool is that!

    • Aquagranny911

Whoa! I’m so showing this one to Hubby. His answer to no cork screw is “just break the neck off the bottle” (He was in the Navy, what can I say?) or jam the cork down with the nearest blunt or sharp object & drink around it.

I do have to try this!

      • qosine

        Your husband just kills me!!
        LMAO
“just break the neck off the bottle . . .
or jam the cork down with the nearest blunt or sharp object & drink around it.”
Reminds of the first time I drank wine w/buds — Boone’s Farm in Georgetown, DC. I think on or near GW campus. Pushed the cork down w/a knife. Now,
I had a glass of Chablis (some white wine) with my
mom at dinner clubs, but this was Boone’s Farm!
Sitting in the grass. On a college campus. I was
in high school. Secret. Don’t tell. LOL

        • MsKitty

Ah, the good stuff. Boone’s Farm, Riunite (on ice, that’s nice), Blue Nun. We just knew we were so grown and sophisticated when we were drinking that stuff LOL

Riunite? Who thought up that name. It sounds like a ghetto version of reunite.

          • MsKitty

I know right? That’s up there with Champale, which screams “we’re a pale imitation of the real stuff, but we know your ghetto ass won’t care.”

          • qosine

            LOL

          • conlakappa

That is a Trenton product so we had a family friend who worked there. I had a pink Champale shirt as a tween. Inappropriate? Like I was pre-adopted by Madonna?

Oh, shit, I remember that! LOL

        • Aquagranny911

Boones Farm! OMG that does take me back & worse than that was Ripple or this stuff in a gallon jug (no cork) we got locally & called FD Finest for $2 a jug. It gave you a terrible headache. Hubby gave it a new name: “Ole Skull Pop.”

          • Alma98

            OMG! Not ripple AG!

          • conlakappa

Ha! I could do worse if I have to be possessed by a dead spirit.

          • qosine

            Pink Ripple!! LOL

          • Aquagranny911

Don’t laugh! We use to take that $2 jug of “Ole Skull Pop” throw in a bunch of fruit, spices & a little cheap tequila & call it Sangria for parties. No body complained until the next day.

No matter how little you drank it gave you one hell of a hang over. Pink Ripple might have caused less pain!

Government and Apple Settle Children’s App Purchase Inquiry

    By EDWARD WYATTJAN. 15, 2014

WASHINGTON — The Federal Trade Commission on Wednesday announced a $32.5 million settlement with Apple over charges that it did not adequately notify customers about an app feature that allowed children to purchase items without parental consent.

Apple previously had taken steps to offer refunds to consumers who were affected, and the company said in an email to employees on Wednesday that it received 37,000 claims.

The consent decree signed with the F.T.C. requires Apple to follow through with the promised refunds and modify its systems to make sure that children cannot make unapproved purchases within apps.

In the email to Apple employees, Timothy D. Cook, the Apple chief executive, said that “protecting children has been a top priority for the App Store team and everyone at Apple.”

AP wrongly says ObamaCare site written in Spanglish
    By Fernando Espuelas

The Associated Press’s recently published but factually challenged
report that the ObamaCare Spanish-language site is written in
“Spanglish” is both funny and pathetic. Years of high-school Spanish
seem to have been wasted upon these journalists.According to
the AP, “the translations [on the ObamaCare Spanish-language site] were so clunky and full of grammatical mistakes that critics say they must have been computer-generated — the name of the site itself can literally be read ‘for the caution of health.’ ”

The site’s name, though, is “Cuidado de Su Salud,” which in Spanish actually means “taking care of your health.”

In another instance of the failure of some long-forgotten Spanish teacher to properly educate her students, the news service claims that “The website translates ‘premium’ into ‘prima,’ but that Spanish word is more commonly used to mean a female cousin … a more accurate translation …would be ‘cuotas,’ ‘couta mensual’ or ‘costo annual.’ ”

The correct Spanish word for an insurance “premium” is “prima,” a word that indeed also means female cousin. Grammarians call these “homographs,” words that are spelled the same but have different meanings. Proper Spanish should not be confused with regional street slang.

…To the extent that some Web pages on the healthcare site link to
English-language content, as the AP finally correctly reports, such
content is principally hosted by insurance companies, which should
probably translate their pages, but in some cases do not, because there is no legal requirement for them to do so.

Judge Rejects Lawsuit Aimed At Blowing Up Obamacare

    Sahil Kapur – January 15, 2014, 1:41 PM EST2073

A legal challenge seeking to cripple Obamacare suffered a huge setback Wednesday as it was defeated in federal court.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia ruled against the challengers, who argued that that the text of Obamacare did not allow the law’s premium tax credits to be offered on federal insurance exchanges — that they must only be available through state-based exchanges.

Judge Paul L. Friedman called that argument “unpersuasive,” saying it didn’t pass legal muster and ran counter to the central purpose of the Affordable Care Act.

“Plaintiffs’ proposed construction in this case – that tax credits are available only for those purchasing insurance from state-run Exchanges – runs counter to this central purpose of the ACA: to provide affordable health care to virtually all Americans,” Friedman wrote in a 39-page decision. “Such an interpretation would violate the basic rule of statutory construction that a court must interpret a statute in light of its history and purpose.”

Program to End Homelessness Among Veterans Hits Milestone in Arizona

    By FERNANDA SANTOSJAN. 15, 2014

PHOENIX — Their descent into homelessness began almost as soon as they had closed a dignified chapter in their lives: their military service.

Dexter Mackenstadt, 63, a sailor who spent the Vietnam War tracking submarines along the East Coast, slipped into alcoholism. Robert Stone, 56, who spent three years stationed at naval bases in California, fell to that, too, and to a failing heart. John Hankins, 52, who repaired intercontinental ballistic missiles at an Air Force base in Wyoming, spent years as a drifter, living in a methamphetamine lab in the Arizona desert.

Today they are neighbors and participants in a program that White House officials have said has led Phoenix to become the first community in the country to end homelessness among veterans with long or recurrent histories of living on the streets.

In 2011, by a city count, there were 222 chronically homeless veterans here, a vulnerable, hard-to-reach population of mostly middle-age men, virtually all battling some type of physical or mental ailment along with substance abuse. Federal and city officials acknowledged that was not an exact number, but it is widely regarded as the best measure of the veteran population.

Last month, the last 41 members of that group were placed in temporary housing. Shane Groen, a director at the Arizona Coalition to End Homelessness, one of the city’s partners in the program, said the goal was to have them all in permanent housing by Feb. 14.

Mr. Stone, 56, said, “I’m coming up on nine months sober, and a big part of it is because I have a roof over my head.” He lived on the streets off and on for 15 years until he moved into an apartment here in March.

Earlier this month, Salt Lake City placed the last of its chronically homeless veterans in housing, its mayor, Ralph Becker, announced…..

    • Aquagranny911

I’m so proud of us here in AZ for doing this. Dang! It is so good to feel proud of my state for a change. One reason why this could happen here is that Phoenix has a Dem Mayor (really good guy) & a mostly Dem city council.

I’m so happy too that a lot of people contributed to this effort through “Season For Sharing” a totally non-profit that supports programs like this.

      AZ, you done good!

Governor’s Crazy Reason For Denying Representation To Minority-Heavy District: ‘Not Much Goes On’

By Josh Israel on January 15, 2014 at 10:28 am

North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory (R) dismissed concerns that a district with a majority of non-white voters may go unrepresented for an entire year, suggesting that delaying the special election until November would not hurt citizens because Congress gets nothing done in the fall anyway. Though Rep. Mel Watt (D) resigned his seat on the first day of the legislative year to become director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, Governor Pat McCrory (R) announced last Monday that his replacement will not be elected until November 4.

The comments came on MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown on Wednesday. Host Chuck Todd grilled McCrory on why nearly 1 million citizens in North Carolina’s 12th Congressional District — which which includes a long swath of central North Carolina running from Charlotte to Greensboro and has a majority of voters who are minorities — will have no representative for more than 300 days. McCrory noted that under his state’s election law, he could only have sped up the elections by a couple of months at best:

    • Alma98

NC is working hard to take black folks back to 1850.
And where is the NAACP? They are worthless!

      • EpiphanySweet

The NAACP are busy propping up white artist with black Image awards. They aint got time for real work to advance colored people.

    • goldenstar

To be fair, the state NAACP has been VERY active. This is the chapter that organized Moral Mondays and Rev. Barber is also skilled at national media coverage. OTOH, The national NAACP is good for steaming their outfits for the Awards ceremonies and holidays.

N.C. NAACP seeks quicker election to fill Mel Watt’s seat

RALEIGH — A civil rights organization pressed North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory on Tuesday not to wait until November to let voters elect a successor to former U.S. Rep. Mel Watt, saying that will deny representation to 12th Congressional District residents for too long.Holding a Nov. 4 election to fill Watt’s unexpired term means more than 700,000 citizens will be without someone in Congress to speak for them on critical legislation like the budget, immigration and possibly the Voting Rights Act for most of 2014, said the Rev. William Barber, president of the state conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

“Citizens of North Carolina will be forced to go more than 300 days — almost one year — without their constitutionally guaranteed right to representation,” Barber told reporters. “This is taxation without representation.”

But McCrory, a Republican, stood by his plan to run the special election on the dates already scheduled for the regular 2014 elections in the interests of simplicity, expense and understanding for voters in the Piedmont-area district.

“A simple schedule, where the voters have ample time to evaluate the candidates, and the candidates have ample time to campaign, was the best option,” McCrory wrote in a letter to U.S. Reps. David Price and G.K. Butterfield. The two Democratic incumbents wrote the governor last week asking him to reconsider the special election schedule.

Watt, a Democrat, resigned Jan. 6 to become director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

Under McCrory’s plan, the special election to fill the remaining months of Watt’s current two-year term will use the same election dates as the regularly scheduled election for the term that begins in January 2015. The primary for both races will be held May 6 and the general elections on Nov. 4. Primary runoffs, if necessary, would be July 15.

McCrory wrote that the State Board of Elections said the earliest date for the primary to fill the vacancy could have been March 25, leading to a primary runoff in early June and general election in late July or early August.

But that would have meant six elections for the same seat in eight months at a cost of more than $1 million, the governor said, and election officials in the six counties where the12th District sits would be required to keep different sets of poll books to determine who was eligible to vote in each election.

Even if the election for the vacancy followed the 2014 election schedule for the primary and runoff, the earliest final election would have been Sept. 16, or just seven weeks before the November date, according to McCrory….

Good point, goldenstar. I know our local NAACP, for
the first time ever, started a week-long Civil Rights week last year, and the one this year starts Sat.

      • Alma98

Goldenstar I know the local chapter has been great on these issues. I’m talking about the National NAACP. They’ve been defending everybody who has a cause and saying things like (gay rights is the new civil rights). They need to do better by poc until they do they won’t get another dime from me.

        • goldenstar

Alma, agreed that the national is just about worthless.

          • jds09

More than worthless, I’ve been told some national policies actually hurt the local affiliates. The Urban League is no better.

            Really? How so?

Rev. Barber should be asked to lead the National NAACP. He’s on the case.

Loving this afternoon series—many thanks; one of the greatest recording artists.

Also, love qosine’s brilliant idea for a FLOTUS library—whichever of Illinois or Hawaii which loses out on the Presidential library should seriously consider lobbying for a FLO one. Might end up more popular than PBO’s!

    • qosine

Thx gn! Maybe side by side? lol
      FLOTUS-POTUS always together:)
      I agree re: ILL-HI

      • gn

        Seriously this needs to happen…

        • conlakappa

I think there is traditionally a spot within these presidential libraries for the First Lady. She’d need a whole wing, of course!

          • gn

She needs her own lol. No seriously, this would be a fantastic way to resolve the competition between Hawaii and Illinois for the PBO library. This is such an abnormally popular WH that it really can support two presidential libraries. Why *not* one for PBO and another for FLO? Both states would receive a huge cultural and economic boon.

“Go back and look at that Michelle Obama speech,” says Tim Miller. It’s Jan. 9, and the 32-year-old Republican strategist is perched in front of his Macbook Air, explaining how the first lady just hurt the Democrats’ candidate for an open Senate seat in West Virginia.

“I’m pulling it up. Okay. Here’s a greatCharleston Daily Mail headline: ‘Michelle Obama backs Natalie Tennant in Senate race.’ ”

Miller laughs, because of course that’s ahorrible headline. Nothing about it draws the reader in, or tells them what gaffes or toxic admissions might have happened when Obama arrived. The paper buried the ledes. “She talks about health care,” says Miller. “She talks about gun control. She talks about immigration. I don’t know if she mentioned Keystone, but even the EPA regulations—that was something Michelle Obama mentioned. If you’re any of these Democrat candidates running in red states, any of the issues I just mentioned is kryptonite.”

It’s Miller’s job to obsess about those details. He runs America Rising PAC, the Republican-aligned opposition research factory launched 10 months ago by Mitt Romney’s defeated campaign manager Matt Rhoades. After the election, the Republican National Committee researched and released an autopsy of the loss. The party needed, according to the RNC, was a group that did “nothing but post inappropriate Democrat utterances and act as a clearinghouse for information on Democrats.” Miller left the RNC to join the clearinghouse; As of last week, between the PAC and the LLC run by fellow oppo vet Joe Pounder, America Rising employed 47 more people, full or part-time.

Prosecutors: This wasn’t the first blow-up for Florida theater shooter Curtis Reeves
    By Ed Payne, CNN
updated 2:17 PM EST, Wed January 15, 2014

(CNN) — A few weeks before a texting dispute turned deadly inside a Florida theater, suspect Curtis Reeves had another run-in with a moviegoer, prosecutors said.

During Reeves’ first court appearance on Tuesday, prosecutors said they had heard from another theater patron who said the 71-year-old former Tampa cop saw her texting and “glared at her the entire time throughout the movie” during a screening about three weeks ago.

When the woman got up to use the restroom, Reeves followed her and “made her very uncomfortable,” prosecutors said.

CNN affiliate WTSP later identified the woman as Jamira Dixon of Wesley Chapel, the Tampa suburb where Monday’s shooting took place.

“He became just upset about the whole situation and kept staring and kept giving us dirty looks,” Dixon told the station.

Unfortunately, the senseless deaths of white people will be the only way to end Stand Your Ground laws because generally speaking this counrtry does not give a damn about the senseless deaths of black folks. Their overt and covert racism will always rationalize that the shooter was justified; but, let enough white people get shot and you’ll see a groundswell to repeal this law.

NC GOP Senate candidate compares food stamps to slavery
    by theGrio | January 15, 2014 at 12:43 PM

Greg Brannon, an aspiring GOP U.S. Senate candidate out out of North Carolina, recently compared food stamps to slavery.

The Republican, who considers the late, controversial Sen. Jesse Helms an inspiration, called the program — which provides food for the poor — “goodies.”

“We’re taking our plunder, that’s taken from us as individuals… and the government is now keeping itself in power by giving these goodies away,” Brannon said in an interview recently rediscovered by Mother Jones.

Article states a PPP poll that he trails the GOP candidate (he’s a Tea Partier) and leads Hagan. Hagan stayed in DC rather than go to her state w/ PBO.

They don’t learn. Run like you mean it so voters know that you have values and a spine to deal. Otherwise, your behind deserves to sent home.

I was just reading a post on tumblr by an Asian woman who pointed out how the food she brought to school for lunch, traditional Korean dishes, was used by white kids to mock her. And now these same white kids are grown up hipsters, running to the farmers market and barging into Asian grocery stores to get the “weird” vegetables and dishes that they used to tease her for. They all looooove kimchi now. It’s all the rage.

      White people. SMH

      • rikyrah

I learned about kimchee when I was in grade school. I was the one of the only ones who didn’t make fun of the Asian kids and their food. • Kennymack1971

People are going to learn that just because cable news and latte sipping “progressive” bloggers/pundits say something doesn’t make it true. Like I said earlier, Dems can try this “Diss Obama” strategy if they want to. Their feelings will get curbstomped.

Obviously, the man is incredibly stupid and the fact that he’s bashing Obama and trying to run for the Dem primany shows a level of incompetence that is so stunning, it’s disqualifying, imo.

But I think, like the typical dudebro he is, he thinks white men run the party. He has no idea who runs this: POC, specifically black women. He doesn’t see us. That’s the dudebro way. Like the racist white, the racist left think this Obama thing was just a fluke. A fluke that happened twice. They think that the “natural order” of things will return and that dudebros will win him the nomination.

        • jds09

They have no respect for the on the ground infrastructure PBO has built. OFA is a beast. They gonna learn.

      • TresL

Yesterday, I commented that many of these white “progressives” don’t hear PBO when he talks about the very issues they claim to care about. They are blinded by rage rooted in racial animus and pure, unadulterated envy. I didn’t always understand why envy was considered one of the seven deadly sins, but I do now. The emergence of Barack Obama has made it crystal clear. I think they are still shocked that he ever won election, let alone re-election. They don’t see him, his accomplishments and they don’t see his voters either. I’m with Oprah and I’m paraphrasing, “white people live in a constant state of denial on just about everything in this country. They believe what they need to believe to sleep at night.

Harry Belafonte challenges Phi Beta Sigma to join movement to stop oppression of women
    By DeNeen L. Brown
    January 12 at 6:33 pm

Actor, singer and human rights advocate Harry Belafonte called on Phi Beta Sigma during the fraternity’s Centennial Founders’ Day Gala
Saturday night in Washington to join a worldwide movement to end the violence and oppression against women

Belafonte, who is well known for his historical contributions to the civil rights movement, was keynote speaker during the gala at the
Renaissance Hotel in Washington. Earlier that night, Belafonte was
inducted as an honorary member into the fraternity, one of the largest men’s organizations in the world.

“My contribution as a new member of the fraternity is to sucker all
of you into coming with me and man up and stand up. When the time comes,we will be in touch and you will be informed to join us in the this movement in the 21st century,” Belafonte told a crowd of more than 1,000 people. “Let us use this century to be the century where we say we started the mission to end the violence and oppression of women.”

      True story.

A lot of people clowned, but I personally really liked Beyonce’s short statement and agree with it:

    Gender Equality Is a Myth!

    By Beyoncé Knowles-Carter

We need to stop buying into the myth about gender equality. It isn’t a reality yet. Today, women make up half of the U.S. workforce, but the average working woman earns only 77 percent of what the average working man makes. But unless women and men both say this is unacceptable, things will not change. Men have to demand that their wives, daughters, mothers, and sisters earn more—commensurate with their qualifications and not their gender. Equality will be achieved when men and women are granted equal pay and equal respect.

Humanity requires both men and women, and we are equally important and need one another. So why are we viewed as less than equal? These old attitudes are drilled into us from the very beginning. We have to teach our boys the rules of equality and respect, so that as they grow up, gender equality becomes a natural way of life. And we have to teach our girls that they can reach as high as humanly possible.

We have a lot of work to do, but we can get there if we work together. Women are more than 50 percent of the population and more than 50 percent of voters. We must demand that we all receive 100 percent of the opportunities.

This is a very accessible essay. And if she’s getting people who don’t think about issues like this to pay some attention, God bless her! /resident POU Beyonce stan lol

    • qosine

You know, I always liked her letter in handwriting to FLOTUS.
I hear her voice in here again. Very genuine, IMHO.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

For someone who has tried to portray herself as a leader in the feminist movement, I found her essay to be a basic and simplistic regurgitation of talking points we already knew. And using “commensurate”? C’mon now.

She has thrived in a male dominated industry for 20 years. I would’ve like for her to write about her experiences, and how she was able “to maneuver in a room full of vultures”.

Quite frankly, I think this whole “Beyonce is a feminist” is a gimmick.

      • gn

I don’t agree with the whole comment, but adding a +1 to the notion that it would be interesting to hear more about what it’s really like to be in a room full of vultures. Maybe in the coming years we’ll hear more.

    • Miranda

The only reason I don’t think this essay should have been penned is because I don’t think she or anyone else needs to prove their feminist bonafides to anybody, if in fact, they want to be considered a feminist (I personally do not). The so-called “feminists” got upset over her naming her tour “The Mrs. Carter” tour, and she should have cussed them out over that right then and there. That same mentality is what moans and groans over FLOTUS not burning her bra. I feel no such sisterhood with those nuts.

  • MsKitty

I hope that Charles Pierce never sees MoDo on the street. Violence may ensue.

How Many Ways Can Maureen Dowd Embarrass Journalism?

I should have stayed working at the state park. I could’ve retired at a full pension 15 years ago and I wouldn’t have spent my working life in what amounts at its highest levels to a Chronic Ward.

I’m not saying it’s right. I know it’s wrong. I’m just saying I do it, too. I eat pizza with a knife and fork because I want only the gooey stuff on top, not the crust. (When I first started in The Times’s Washington bureau, I soothed my nerves by noshing on pizzas slathered with mashed potatoes, a dish that required a spoon and bigger jeans.) I almost didn’t become a Times columnist because of a de Blasio-like faux pas. When Arthur Sulzberger Jr. took me to breakfast to discuss the possibility of a column, we were talking when he suddenly looked dismayed. I thought it was my ZERO knowledge about NATO, but it wasn’t. “Why,” he asked me, “are you eating your muffin with a knife and fork?”

The instrument capable of measuring the microscopic shit I care about this anecdote has yet to be invented.

I thought I was being ladylike, which might have been de Blasio’s problem as well. The photos looked way too ladylike for the 6-foot-5 mayor. It seemed more like the prissy move of Warren Wilhelm Jr. of Cambridge – his original name which he changed because of his estrangement from his alcoholic father – than the paesano Bill de Blasio of Brooklyn.

Fag-baiting. It’s not just for Obambi any more.
