They already have the Christmas cups out in coffee shops, and Christmas trees are everywhere.

Your descriptions of the Christmas roll out are great. Down in TN, sandals and falling leaves:)

    — – –Last night Bill de Blasio became the mayor-elect of New York City. But even more exciting for some of us New Yorkers, Chirlane McCray became the first lady-elect.
    — -SNIP- – -

While some say behind every great man is a great woman, in de Blasio’s case, beside him has long been a great woman. De Blasio’s wife,Chirlane McCray, who is African American, is a well-respected writer and political operative in her own right. A Wellesley graduate, she met de Blasio while both were working in City Hall during the Dinkins administration. Many are already speculating on how de Blasio’s administration will transform New York, but a more interesting question may be how his wife will transform New York.

    • goldenstar

There is something so…tasteless about Kelli Goff and her writing or her brain. Every other sentence contains a reference to another irrelevant signifier. Chirlane McCray has cred and we don’t need Jon Stewart nor Vogue magazine to validate black women nor their brain power nor their influence. This article is a particular demonstration that Kelli Goff is just not that…culturally observant.

      • Alma98

She thinks she’s a special negro.

    - — -Democrats Win a Few Big Races at the Expense of the Tea Party- — -HAH!

    – — - – - — -SNIP—
That doesn’t mean, however, that I looked upon the day as insignificant. There’s a sure-shot Democrat in the New York mayor’s office once again. A tall, interesting guy with a UN family named Bill De Blasio. I’ve profiled hizzoner in an earlier submission and he’ll be good for America’s largest city.

I’ve specifically eyed two other races as well. The two governor’s
races. One a runaway, the other fairly close. There’s New Jersey where short-fused, Lap-Banded and serial BS’er, Chris Christie again fooled a substantial majority of voters into ignoring his utter disdain for unions, teachers, gays and all manner of poor workers and minorities through heartless budgeting and a veto of the Jersey legislature’s minimum wage bill, later approvingly reversed as a ballot issue the same day of the Christie re-election.

    — -Oh, and Christie hates the Affordable Care Act and has taken a pass on running the state health insurance marketplace. In a late-evening appearance before supporters, Christie told the crowd “I stand here before you as your governor, blah, blah, blah; thank you New Jersey for making me the luckiest guy in the world.” He then claimed that he was going to be a two-term governor of New Jersey, with a STRAIGHT FACE!

CNN pundits were falling all over themselves virtually declaring Christie THE force to be reckoned with in the 2016 presidential race.
Hardly! By that time, people will have cut through his bogus “everyman” persona to the guts of his actual narrow right-wing political agenda.

Good afternoon to all of you sassy black gals! LOL
I’m being silly because that woman over at BJ has me in tears trying to Miss Ann rikyrah. And when other white women agreed with rikyrah she couldn’t handle it and walked off lol. I don’t know but this has me LMAO!

    • crazycanuck

I feel so vindicated, even though it’s happening across the border and not here. I told you all my story working for a “feminist” organization. I tried telling them, then I got the ‘you just don’t fit in’ bullsh!t. They’ll learn sooner than later.

      • Alma98

I got that a lot with the military wives club. They didn’t understand why I didn’t want to join. After the first meeting I was like no thank you. The black women were talked over and told they’d get back to us on our ideas. Only one white women stood up them, she said your husband’s rank doesn’t apply to you. He worked for it not you I was like well now. But I never returned and they started saying I was unsociable, whateva.

    • rikyrah

      Alma,
      I was like…really?
The best you can do is to go back to Hillary Vs. Obama?
      That’s all you got?
I just Kanway shrugged and went onto the next thread.

I know this is Pattie week, so I have to post my favorite version of my favorite Patti song, “You Are My Friend”. It’s actually Sylvester’s version and I think it’s so beautiful. And get into the background vocals by the two women who would become The Weather Girls. Awesome.

    • MsKitty

I miss him. He was true to himself and made no apologies, which took a lot of courage back in the day.

      • conlakappa

Did you ever see a clip of him telling Joan Rivers, “do not refer to me as a drag queen!”?

        • MsKitty

No I haven’t. Can see him doing that though.

        • crazycanuck

I wonder why he didn’t like the term?

Here’s the clip of his performance and then the interviewhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNS7VM5oTRU. At about 7:20, he expresses disdain for the term.

Alabama Reaches Settlement To Permanently Block Key Provisions Of Anti-Immigration Law – Posted October 30, 2013

On Tuesday, the state of Alabama reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice, civil rights groups, and church leaders to permanently block key provisions of a harsh anti-immigration law that authorized local officials, citizens, and business owners to target undocumented immigrants. The proposed settlement would limit the scope of racial profiling and prohibit local authorities from determining the legal status of immigrants.[....]

Other blocked provisions include: prohibiting enforcement officials from criminalizing immigrants who do not register their immigration status; requiring schools to verify the immigration status of children enrolled in secondary education; criminalizing people who give rides or rent to undocumented immigrants; criminalizing undocumented immigrants who solicit work through various means.[....]

      • Alma98

Wouldn’t it be awesome if he got dragged along with them!

        • conlakappa

We should live so long. I’m sure he’s trying to figure out how to re-ingratiate himself to HRC, not realizing how toxic he is for her campaign, bringing no real constituencies with him. He’s burned too many bridges to try to cross them again.

          • itgurl_29

I hope he does weasel his way into the Clinton camp. I know way too many older black folk who are ready to vote for Hillary, so seeing Tavis in her circle would be a great wake up call.

          • Alma98

I see that too and I just don’t get it, they don’t owe the Clintons diddly.

          • itgurl_29

My parents had a little gathering with some friends last weekend at their house. They’re all between 63 and 70. They were all talking about Hillary and how it’s her time. Though I have to give my dad credit, he seemed to be the only one wary of her. One of them even had the never to say Biden should step aside. These are the same people who told me back in early ’07 that Barack Obama didn’t have a chance. It wasn’t until Iowa that they took him seriously. They all watch MSNBC all day long, of course. They fell they are politically aware, but they are really behind the curve and need their kids to tell them what is really going on. I’ll talk to them like I did in ’08. By the time I’m done, they’ll be voting the way they’re supposed to.

          • Alma98

My mother cannot stand the Clintons. She knows that a lot of the ills black folks are suffering now can be laid at Bill’s feet.

          • Guest

That’s great! IMHO more of our older folks and others need the alternative feed we get online; for example POU spreading the truth about MacAuliffe’s Obama Coalition victory despite the white vote( yes, including white women, lol). The broadcast stuff is toxic infotainment– too often including MSNBC, except for Rev. Al.

          • macademic

IMHO it is so important to have an alternative to the toxic infotainment that passes for news these days. With the exception of Rev. Al, MSNBC is often no better than the rest.

Brazil president wants to reserve 20 percent of government jobs for blacks
by Associated Press | November 6, 2013 at 11:46 AM

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) — Brazil’s president says she’ll ask congress to pass legislation to reserve 20 percent of the nation’s government jobs for blacks.

About half of Brazil’s 204 million people are black — more than in any nation except Nigeria.

Blacks face persistent socio-economic inequality in Brazil, and President Dilma Rousseff says her proposal will help reverse that. She says “affirmative action is essential” for creating equal opportunities.

There is no word on when congress might begin debating the proposal.

Rousseff also said Tuesday that by the end of next year, her government will have sent a doctor to each of Brazil’s more than 3,500 “quilombos.” Those are settlements founded by descendants of Brazil’s slaves.

Brazil had more African slaves land on its shores than any other country in the Americas.

        • itgurl_29

Black Brazilians had to realize they were black before anything could happen. They bought into that color blind bullcrap for too long. And they hate themselves something serious. They are just now starting to develop some kind of civil rights movement. SMH

    • conlakappa

Isn’t Brazil like 80% black [for rhetorical sake]? How white of her!

      • itgurl_29

Yeah, but there are black folk there, visibly black folk, who insist that they aren’t black. And I’m not talking about mixed people, I’m talking about visibly black folks. In Brazil, men and women who look like Idris Elba and Kerry Washington will insist they are not black and sometimes claim to be white, especially if they somehow are making good money. No lies.

White folks did a number on black people all over the Americas. But it’s like they did something extra to negros in Brazil and the Domincan Republic. They will swear up and down they aren’t black. They’ll fight you if you call them black.

        • conlakappa

Right, I understand. Wealth can apparently buy one’s way out of blackness. Maybe it’s the 20% who will black identify.

          • conlakappa

Here’s the thing though with race and identifiers: only South Africa and the U.S. has a history of classifying people by race. I’m not sure how they can really get to that 20% number if race isn’t an identifier in data collection. Anyone who looks black? Has an address that’s in the favelas?

        • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

A friend of mine from Brazil has that issue. Obviously Black but swore up and down she wasn’t. I told her recently I finally figured out why. She laughed disturbingly uncontrollably.

Another fact from the NJ election:

Just 38% of registered voters showed up yesterday. That compares to 47% in 2009 – which set a then-record low for a governor’s race in New Jersey. Yesterday’s turnout is now the absolute lowest turnout on record of any November election where a statewide office (Governor/US Senate) topped the ballot.

Richie Incognito, who allegedly used racial slur toward Jonathan Martin, was ‘honorary’ black man in Dolphins locker room
    By Eliot Shorr-Parks/NJ.com
    on November 06, 2013 at 12:51 PM, updated November 06, 2013 at 1:33 PM

…After talking to players in the Dolphins locker room, here is why
Salguero does not foresee Incognito’s use of a racial slur being a
problem should Incognito return to Miami:

“Richie Incognito was considered a black guy. He was accepted by the black players. He was an honorary black man.”

Salguero reports that some players in the Miami locker room do not
consider Martin a “black guy,” and Incognito is actually considered
“more of a black man” than Martin, who is bi-racial.

Part of the reason, according to one former Dolphins player, is Incognito’s background.

“Richie is honorary,” one player who left the Dolphins this offseason told Salguero. “I don’t expect you to understand because you’re not black. But being a black guy, being a brother is more than just about skin color. It’s about how you carry yourself. How you play. Where you come from. What you’ve experienced. A lot of things.”

    MORE: http://www.nj.com/eagles/index.ssf/2013/11/richie_incognito_who_used_racial_slur_towards_jonathan_martin_was_considered_black_in_dolphins_locke.html#incart_river_default

      How disgusting!

    • Daltex82

      That is beyond ridiculous.

    • rigoletta

If that’s the case then what they are saying is that Incognito wasn’t only ignorant negro (real or honorary) in that locker room.

No wonder Martin got the hell out of there.

He’s a Stanford grad with 2 Harvard educated parents. Why on earth would he want to be anywhere near that mess.

      • Miranda

        Read this:

Martin’s high school coach, Vic Eumont, told the Palm Beach Post that Martin’s personality did not fit in with the Dolphins crowd.

Eumont was Martin’s coach at Harvard-Westlake School, a private high school in Studio City, Calif. Both of Martin’s parents went to Harvard, but Martin passed up on a chance to go to Harvard so he could play football at Stanford.

“Before, he wasn’t around Nebraska, LSU kind of guys,” Eumont, a former Tulane offensive guard, told the Palm Beach Post. “He’s always been around Stanford, Duke, Rice kind of players.”

Eumont told the paper he hasn’t spoken with Martin since he left the Dolphins last week, but he said he could see how the team might not welcome Martin back in the locker room after Incognito’s suspension.

“In locker rooms full of Nebraska, LSU, Southern Cal players, Miami players — they’ll look at this as a weakness,” Eumont told the paper. “If he makes it through all this, and if he was encouraged to come back, he’d come back with a vengeance.”

Kanye West: Target of Boycott by NAN for Confederate Flag Clothing
    November 5, 2013 by EurPublisher

*The National Action Network of Los Angeles, a leading national civil rights group founded by Rev. Al Sharpton calls for a national boycott of hip hop superstar Kanye West new clothing line featuring the confederate flag symbol.

Why? “Kanye West already has several pieces of merchandise from his Yeezus tour that are emblazoned with the controversial Southern Cross at his tour store in Los Angeles. Our organization is determined to shut down that and any other store that decides to sell this merchandise. For African-Americans the confederate flag is symbolic of the hurt and pain of slavery in the South and the legacy it has left for those still living under those ideologies. When Kanye embraces and adorns this confederate flag, He also embraces the ignorance and racism that goes along with it.” I challenge Kanye West to create a clothing line of merchandise featuring swastikas if he’s sincere about his beliefs . But we all know Kanye doesn’t have the courage to do that. The Jewish community would run him out of town if he did and so should the African American community,” stated Najee Ali political director of the Los Angeles National Action Network.

“Kanye West selling jackets with the Confederate flag on them is a
disgrace and embarrassment. many of our ancestors were brutalized,
kidnapped , raped, and murdered during slavery under this flag. Its
inexcusable for West to be promoting and merchandising this flag. Were determined to boycott and shut down any other stores that attempt to sell this merchandise, stated Rev K.W. Tulloss President National Action Network Los Angeles

For these past years, our experience in this country has been watered down, whitewashed, and co-opted. The confederate flag merchandising is of a piece with this cannibalization. Does my heart glad to FINALLY see a line drawn and some of this foolishness challenged. Stand for nothing, fall for anything.

And shame on you Kanye! His mother must be rolling in her grave.

    • Miranda

GOOD! He needs to be called out and loud.

    • MsKitty

Let’s see his pimp mama-in-law try to help him out of this.

      Confederate flag = The Swastika
The idea/symbol of confederacy need to be stomped out —
      just like the swastika.

    • Daltex82

      “…..I challenge Kanye
West to create a clothing line of merchandise featuring swastikas if
he’s sincere about his beliefs . But we all know Kanye doesn’t have the
courage to do that. The Jewish community would run him out of town if he
did and so should the African American community,” stated Najee Ali
political director of the Los Angeles National Action Network.”

One hour, 2 minutes and 32 seconds and I have health insurance via Covered California. That’s including my time on hold, cause I couldn’t get on the website.

No questions about pre -exisiting conditions, no mention of insurance caps, he was knowledgeable, pleasant and answered all my questions.

For $92 per month I’m getting better insurance as a free lancer than I did as a full-time employee in senior management at a liberal feminist nonprofit agency.

I think I drank some bad milk (lactose free)I feel weird

    • Alma98

Drink some ginger-ale or take pepto and see if that helps.

      • crazycanuck

Doing that now. It’s weird I thought I smelled something, but when I put my nose to the oatmeal, I didn’t smell anything. When I came back home the milk had gone bad.

        • Alma98

Sometimes it’s already bad when you buy it. I’ve had milk go bad after a couple of days. I think it’s because they’re not refrigerating it properly.

Detroit Woman Shot To Death Seeking Help After Car Accident
Nov 5, 2013 By Hello Beautiful

Renisha McBride, 19 (pictured above), was shot to death in a Dearborn Heights, Michigan neighborhood after seeking help following a car crash, reports The Detroit News.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning, McBride knocked on the
door of a home, hoping for assistance. Instead, she got a gunshot wound to the head.

“He shot her in the head … for what? For knocking on his door,” said McBride’s maternal aunt, Bernita Spinks. “If he felt scared or threatened, he should have called 911.”

“You see a young black lady on your porch and you shoot?” asked
Spinks. “He killed my niece and he needs to pay for it. He needs to be
    in jail.

“There was no windows broken. My niece didn’t bother anyone,” said Spinks. “She went looking for help and now she’s dead.”

I think GLH put in last night’s thread, but it needs to be seen. This story is so frightening, now you have to tell your kids not to seek help but call someone you know. We put our daughter on our insurance with road side service. After seeing this story and the one in NC I’m glad we did.

    • Miranda

I hope this story gains more traction. This is horrible, its a nightmare for every one of us of color. We are now unable to even seek assistance in our hour of need lest that be a death sentence in and of itself.

    • qosine

I just think of her upset, scared, feeling cut off with
her cell phone dead, knocking on the door for help . . .

    • Aquagranny911

This is just too much! We really need to do something about the guns & these “shoot your neighbor” laws. I hope the slime goes to jail for this!

  • Alma98

I’m in trouble I’m Christmas shopping and I’m trying not to keep the gifts I got for my sisters for myself lol. I think i’ll wait til after Christmas and by them for myself in a different color lol.

    • Aquagranny911

You made me laugh! Sis and I are forever buying stuff for each other that we want for ourselves so we share.

      • Alma98

My baby sis birthday is today I’m taking her gift to her in awhile. She does not like to share lol but my sis next to me is a giver, sometimes too much. But I love’em to death.

        • Aquagranny911

I gave my Sis this gorgeous jacket for her Bday that I so wanted to keep for me. As soon as she unwrapped it & put it on she said: “You can borrow it sometime.” I love my Sis!

Tennessee mayor arrested at city hall for stealing Toys for Tots’ Christmas money

[....] Wilson, who also serves as the city’s fire chief, was charged with official misconduct and the theft of $60,000 from Toys for Toys, a charity which provides toys to poor children and helps families pay
utility bills during the holiday season. The charity is not affiliated
with a charity by a similar name run by the U.S. Marine Corps.

Agents began investigating Wilson early last month, TBI spokesperson Kristen Helm explained on Monday.[....]

        • conlakappa

It was your use of “What is his damage?” that prompted me to ask. I’d used it not a minute after you had but in talking to a colleague because I’d seen the movie last night.

Another New Mexico man forced to undergo humiliating medical procedures in drug investigation

[....] Another man, Timothy Young, told the TV station that he experienced a similar ordeal after he was stopped for turning without a proper signal. Young said the same K-9 unit that alerted officers to drugs in Eckert’s case indicated that he also had illegal drugs. Like Eckert, Young was taken to Gila Regional Medical Center in nearby Silver City and subjected without his consent to X-rays of his abdominal area and an anal exam.

Police found no drugs, and Young said the search warrant used in his case, like Eckert’s, was not valid in the county were the exams were conducted. The station also reported that Leo, the K-9 unit involved in both cases, had been trained as a drug-sniffing dog, but the animal’s certification had expired for New Mexico in April 2011. K-9 officers must be certified each year.[....]

Some serious house cleaning is in order.

    • Alma98

Makes you wonder if they’re getting a thrill out of it.
We have several lawsuits pending here against the police. They were stopping people and doing anal exams on them in public. And the chief knew nothing about it. He has been really trying to gain poc’s trust, he was so pissed.

    • qosine

      Horrible.

    • Aquagranny911

This is disgusting but New Mexico has always been notorious for traffic stops. When Hubby was still in college, 50 years ago he got stopped in that same county, hauled before a judge & the judge fined him all the money in his wallet.

That was to be Hubby’s food money for the month & to buy some text books but the judge didn’t care & Hubby was too scared to argue. Fortunately friends helped him out.

      • Alma98

The police who were doing anal exams here in public used their bare hands no gloves. The ring leader was fired I don’t know if the other ones have had their day yet.

        • Daltex82

There have been several lawsuits recently in Texas were women have been given cavity searches on the side of the road after being stopped by troopers. Just reading the accounts of the incidents by the women involved makes my skin crawl.

Bad News for Republicans: The Youth Vote Grew in 2013 and They Voted Democrat

[....] In Virginia, the youth vote as a share of the overall electorate increased by 3 points. The Democratic share of the youth vote increased by one percent, while the Republican share of dropped by 14%. Terry McAuliffe beat Ken Cuccinelli 45%-40% among younger voters. In New Jersey, Chris Christie was piling up big overall numbers, but he lost with young voters 51%-49%.

Republicans should be very afraid. Young voters are becoming solidly Democratic. The only demographic that Chris Christie lost in New Jersey was voters age 18-29. It doesn’t appear to matter who is at the top of the ticket, the Republican Party is a major turnoff to young voters right now.[....]

But… but… conventional wisdom says that young people don’t vote in off-year elections!!! This was even an odd year election!!!

    • Aquagranny911

In many ways younger voters have been hit harder by the goatfigging GOP & they are more liberal in their views on social issues.

    • 7thangel

that youth vote is from a minority majority pop., made up of black, latino, asian, and other poc youth. so they have less white youth they can rely on.

‘Keisha’ Ditches Black Name, Becomes ‘Kylie’

Kansas City teen tires of being taunted by her peers and changes her name with mother’s blessing.
    BY: STEPHEN A. CROCKETT JR.

After enduring taunts and insults about her name, a 19-year-old biracial teen decided she’d had enough.

Keisha Austin will now be forever known as Kylie Austin, the Kansas City Star reports.

Gone is the birth name given to her by her white mother because she believed it represented a strong, feminine, beautiful black woman.

“I saw it as a source of pride,” her mother said. “I wanted her to have that.”

The Kansas City, Kansas, teen also hopes that by losing her birth name, she will shed the stereotyping that feels woven into the fabric of her name.

Kylie didn’t grow up in a diverse community, so “Keisha” became a constant source of shame, she told the Kansas City Star.

The teen says her name was often mocked by peers asking if there was a “La” or a “Sha” in front of it. One teacher asked if she spelled it with a dollar sign instead of an “S,” like the singer Ke$ha.

    more here: http://www.theroot.com/articles/culture/2013/11/_keisha_ditches_her_black_name_becomes_kylie.html

    • Alma98

This right here is the beginning of self hate. Even though her mother tried it didn’t help. Maybe if she were around more people of color she wouldn’t have such a complex. But it’s obvious she wants to be seen as white. And this statement here bothers me.

“It’s like they assumed that I must be a certain kind of girl,” she
said. “Like, my name is Keisha so they think they know something about me, and it always felt negative.”

    • Aquagranny911

This bothers me on a very deep level.

      • Alma98

How’s it going AG? And it is bothersome that she associate a black name with negativity.

        • crazycanuck

I love that name. She seems to have a low self esteem problem. They need to start there.

          • Alma98

And the teacher should be ashamed for piling on. He or she sounds very immature.

          • crazycanuck

Agreed, that person should not be teaching imo.

          • TyrenM

Damn. My first thought, that “teacher” needs to be removed.

          • Aquagranny911

Agreed & I like it way better than “kylie”

        • Aquagranny911

Going OK some disappointing but not unexpected results from yesterday here. I try not to let it drag me down.

I have to say I would be very upset if any of my children or grandchildren felt this way about their names.

          • Alma98

I’m sorry about the losses but hopefully you all made some inroads for future elections. I would be upset too, I think she needs to see a therapist.

          • crazycanuck

I think so also, they may be something deeper going on here.

          • Alma98

It is, she’s in a very white community. Most of them probably don’t know many poc or interact with them. She’s gonna have a hard time if she leaves her hometown. Definitely need some help asap.

    • rikyrah

      uh uh uh

    • rikyrah

      I just can’t.
if she can’t cope at 15…what the fuck is she gonna do in THE REAL WORLD.

      • Alma98

You mean at 19yrs old, she is going to have a tough time in the real world.

        • rikyrah

19 doesn’t reassure me anymore, Alma. in fact, it makes me feel worse….

          • Alma98

Oh no I was correcting her age, I totally agree with you. She’s gonna get hurt a lot when she goes outside of her town.

    • Daltex82

~~Insert heavy eye roll and a girl please here~~

    • Tafr

I know one person named Kesha and she is white. This girl needs to grow a back bone already.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

She can change her name all she wants, it still won’t erase the fact that she’s a young BLACK woman, and will be treated as such. A “white name” won’t protect you from racism.

MEMO: The Hillary Effect In The Virginia Gubernatorial Race http://ab21.org/TheHillaryEffect

They are crediting Hillary Clinton with the Virginia democratic wins. It’s ridiculous. And they are being called out, thank goodness:

    @sfpelosi

Your Hillary Effect “white paper” is aptly named & secondary to #Obama Effect in #VAgov where AA voters caused the D win @American_Bridge

    • Alma98

      They are delusional!

      • itgurl_29

All you ever heard from Hillary in ’08 was “what about the white working class? He can’t win without the white working class. I bring the white working class votes and you can’t win without the white working class votes!” That’s all you heard from her behind. The white working class voted for the republican! It’s Obama’s coalition that won this thing, not hers. Yet they are going to steal that hard work to give her credit to boost her weak ass claim to the presidency. It’s sickening.

    • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

Was she even in Virginia? Give me a break.

      • Town

Yes, Hillary did A rally up in Northern Virginia.

Quite frankly if they want to say “Clinton” is what caused McAuliffe to win they need to credit the correct Clinton and say that BILL is the one who got McAuliffe the win since BILL did MULTIPLE McAuliffe campaign rallies across the state (and radio ads) while Hillary popped in for one rally up in Northern Virginia.

  • Miranda

    Evening thread is up!
