Wednesday Afternoon Thread: President Obama on extending tax cuts for Middle Class

If Congress fails to act, every family in America will see their taxes automatically go up at the beginning of next year. A typical middle-class family of four would see its taxes rise by $2,200.

Comedian Katt Williams allegedly leads police on a tricycle chase in Sacramento

Comedian Katt Williams is under investigation after allegedly leading Capitol Protection CHP officers on a hot pursuit chase in downtown Sacramento on Sunday, according to TMZ.

Williams was spotted driving down K Street when he almost hit five pedestrians on a tricycle. Officers are not amused by the incident and this most recent escapade could land the comedian behind bars in a Sacramento jail cell

Unemployment rates fall in half of large U.S. cities
    November 28, 2012, 3:13 PM

WASHINGTON Unemployment rates declined last month in more than half of the 372 largest U.S. cities, further evidence of steady improvement in the job market.

The Labor Department said Wednesday that rates fell in 201 metro areas. They rose in 116 and were unchanged in 55. And the number of cities with unemployment below 7 percent rose to 180 last month, up from 107 a year ago.

    […]

Unlike the national data, the metro unemployment rates are not adjusted for seasonal trends, such as the hiring of many part-time retail employees for the winter holidays. So they tend to be more volatile from month to month.

The number of areas with sharply higher unemployment is declining. Thirty-five metro areas had unemployment rates of 10 percent or above last month. That’s the same as the previous month but down from 80 a year ago.

He is a former Northwestern University football star who was in the pros, so he has some name recognition. Cousin of NFL player Tommie Harris, who used to be on the Bears.

Napoleon was just elected to the state senate seat previously held by Rev. James Meeks in his first run for office. Folks are gonna need for him to have a seat and do some good things in the IL Senate before he gets a promotion.

    WUH?!!

Private Prison Company Used in Drug Raids at Public High School

[….] While such “drug sweeps” have become a routine matter in many of the nation’s schools, along with the use of metal detectors and zero-tolerance policies, one feature of this raid was unusual.[….] It is the involvement of CCA — the nation’s largest private, for-profit prison corporation — that causes this high school “drug sweep” to stand out as unusual; CCA is not, despite CGPD’s evident opinion to the contrary, a law enforcement agency.[….]

“All the research shows that CCA doesn’t properly train its staff to do the jobs they actually have. They most certainly do not have anywhere near the training and experience–to say nothing of the legal authority–to conduct a drug raid on a high school,” Isaacs added. “It is chilling to think that any school official would be willing to put vulnerable students at risk this way.”[….]

Will Smith needs to have his ass beat for this foolishness. Wasting PBO and AG Holder’s time on T.I.’s ass. Boy, Bye!

Through the years, you’ve mentioned different people being supportive of everything you’ve gone through, including Eminem. Who else has been there to help?

As you mentioned, of course, Em. He was extremely supportive and inspirational during that time. Busta Rhymes, Puffy, Lyor Cohen, Russell Simmons, Nelly, David Banner, Charlie Mack, Will Smith. Will actually went as far as getting in touch with [attorney general] Eric Holder and the Obama administration trying to see if we could get some kind of release. He was very politely told that was not possible. [laughs]

    Really?

It was the last time I was going back, and I was going to court for my probation violation. He was in deep discussions about it. And he’s been a huge contributor to the administration, and I mean not just in finances, I’m talking about time and other kinds of efforts, so it ain’t like his words were falling on deaf ears. But I understood. I didn’t even expect no help. I didn’t expect nobody to be able to help me. I knew I made my bed and I knew I had to lay in it.

‘Super drunk’ charge for Wings pick

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Detroit Red Wings prospect faces charges under Michigan’s tough “super drunk” designation following a traffic stop during which police discovered him clad in a Teletubby costume.

According to a Grand Rapids police report obtained by MLive.com, Riley Sheahan twice registered a blood alcohol level of .30 percent when tested in jail after his arrest on Oct. 29.

Police say the 20-year-old Grand Rapids Griffins center from St. Catharines, Ontario, was wearing the costume of a purple Teletubby known as Tinky Winky during the stop.

    The Dangers of Donald
Macy’s popularity plummets for failing to dump the Trump Collection

Remember that so-called “birther” issue from the presidential campaign? Remember all that press coverage of Donald Trump demanding that Barack Obama turn over his birth certificate—then doubting that the one the president did turn over was authentic? Remember the national sigh of relief when the whole issue finally just went away?

Well, it hasn’t. At least, not for Macy’s.

According to figures just released by YouGov BrandIndex, Macy’s loyalty rating among female consumers tumbled 45 percent—hardly tidings of comfort and joy as the holiday shopping season moves into high gear. Having enjoyed a score of 31 back in November, Macy’s is now slumming in the 17 range. Just for the sake of comparison, J.C. Penney’s score is 38. Ouch. The dip owes itself to The Donald—specifically, Macy’s refusal to pull the Trump Signature Collection from store shelves.

Ivanka Trump Says ‘Obama-vention’ With Father ‘Never Happened’ [Exclusive]

Ivanka Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday morning to refute a New York Daily News report that she and her brothers staged an “Obama-vention” for their famous father to get him to stop bashing the president. Now, the 31-year-old businesswoman and “Celebrity Apprentice” judge tells omg! why the story got under her skin.

“What bothers me are totally fictitious stories that aren’t fact-checked,” Ivanka told omg! Wednesday at a press conference announcing plans for Trump Tower Punta del Este in Uruguay. “I don’t get a call to ask the validity of a source’s tale. And then there is massive pickup throughout the media. So that did bother me. When I saw the story I said: Huh. That never happened. And then I saw it picked up everywhere as fact. You know, these things happen, but it’s obviously without truth or merit.

Smear campaign against Rice broadens, intensifies
    By Steve Benen
    Wed Nov 28, 2012 3:04 PM EST

The only meaningful complaint raised by Republicans against Susan Rice is that she shared the collective judgment on the Benghazi attack on Sunday shows. It gives new meaning to the phrase “blame the messenger” — Rice didn’t write the CIA talking points, she simply told the public what they said, just as she was asked to do.

And yet, the Republican campaign against her appears to be intensifying. The latest criticism comes by way of Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), who, next year, will ostensibly be the Senate’s only GOP moderate.

Rice paid Collins a courtesy visit this morning, and the Maine Republican later told reporters that Rice served as assistant secretary of state for African affairs when al Qaeda attacked American embassies in Kenya and Somalia: “What troubles me so much is the Benghazi attack in many ways echoes the attacks on those embassies in 1998, when Susan Rice was head of the African region for our State Department.”

This is pretty twisted — to suggest the assistant secretary of state for African affairs is responsible for security decisions at every U.S. diplomatic outpost in an enormous continent is absurd, even by the standards of congressional Republicans — but as the smear campaign against Rice unfolds, it’s also quickly becoming the norm.

Collins added that Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) “would be an excellent appointment and would be easily confirmed by his colleagues,” thus boosting the Republican Party’s partisan goals of shrinking the Democratic caucus.

    ——————————————————————————–

In the meantime, GOP antics are making Democrats getting angrier by the day.

Obama sides with Reid on filibuster reform
    By Steve Benen
    Wed Nov 28, 2012 12:35 PM EST

A sitting president obviously has no direct role over how congressional chambers conduct their business, but President Obama’s newly announced support for filibuster reform is still an important step in the larger effort

Jumping squarely into the white-hot debate currently being waged in the Senate, the White House on Wednesday said it supports Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s efforts to change the rules of the upper chamber.

“The President has said many times that the American people are demanding action,” White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer said in a statement to The Huffington Post. “They want to see progress, not partisan delay games. That hasn’t changed, and the President supports Majority Leader Reid’s efforts to reform the filibuster process.”

“Over the past few years important pieces of legislation like the DREAM Act, the Paycheck Fairness Act, and the American Jobs Act weren’t even allowed to be debated, and judicial nominations and key members of the administration are routinely forced to wait months for an up-or-down vote,” Pfeiffer added. “The American people deserve a United States Senate that puts them first, instead of partisan delay.”

This is, as best as I can tell, the first time the Obama White House has explicitly endorsed institutional Senate reforms. Indeed, as Sam Stein noted, there was a related effort two years ago, and at the time, the president stayed out of the fight.

    – —-Extending Unemployment Insurance Would Create 300,000 Jobs Next Year – –

    – – – – While Washington obsesses over the so-called “fiscal cliff” — the set of tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to take place at the end of the year — America’s unemployed are facing a cliff of a different kind. In January, the expanded federal unemployment insurance program will expire, cutting off benefits for millions of Americans.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, extending unemployment insurance won’t just help those Americans struggling to find work in a still-sluggish economy. It will also help create 300,000 jobs:

For the three options involving extensions for an entire year—Options 1, 2, and 4—economic output would be $1.10 higher per dollar of budgetary cost, on average, in 2013, CBO estimates, and employment would be increased by six years of full-time-equivalent employment per million dollars of budgetary cost (see figure below).

Under Option 1 [a full, year-long extension], for example, which extends the benefits provided under the current EUC and EB programs at a total budgetary cost of $30 billion, CBO estimates that gross domestic product adjusted for inflation would be 0.2 percent higher in the fourth quarter of 2013 and that full-time-equivalent employment would be 0.3 million higher at that time than it would be under current law.

Democrats Ready to Fight for Susan Rice
Anyone who thinks that the “caustic reaction” from GOP senators on their meeting with Susan Rice yesterday gives Democrats any pause on a Rice nomination for Secretary of State, should think again, a Democratic Senate aide tells First Read.

Said the aide: “People are happy to fight for her. This is getting people’s back up. The general sense of the mood is this is ridiculous. She’s obviously qualified.”

“The aide also questioned whether Republicans besides McCain, Graham, and Ayotte would think this is a ‘smart fight to pick’ given Rice’s qualifications and that this would mean a ‘high-profile fight with a qualified African-American woman.’ As to the threat of holds from Ayotte and Graham, the aide said that if Rice is nominated and presents well at her confirmation hearing, there’s a ‘good chance cooler heads prevail’ and there would be more than enough votes to confirm her. That would make Ayotte and Graham’s holds ‘moot’ once it goes to a cloture vote, the aide said, because “either we have the votes or we don’t.'”http://politicalwire.com/archives/2012/11/28/democrats_ready_to_fight_for_susan_rice.html#.ULbIdsXVX4Q.twitter

funny this is an anonymous aide who doesn’t name any dems who are going to “defend” Rice.
Why you gotta b anon for doing something that is right and moral and why is this coming from an aide?
Seems like some dems (like billary) are feeling the heat from us bout their noticeable silence and is trying to throw us a bone to shut us up.

    – — -Attorneys for Florida A&M University on Wednesday asked a judge to dismiss a civil lawsuit brought by the family of a drum major who died last year after being hazed by fellow band members, claiming Robert Champion was a willing participant in the ritual.

University attorney Richard Mitchell said Champion wasn’t forced to board a bus parked outside an Orlando hotel where the hazing took place, and he had risen through the ranks of the famed Marching 100 band without taking part in hazing until that fateful night in November 2011

Champion’s willingness to take part in the hazing ritual gives the university immunity from the wrongful death lawsuit, Mitchell said.

What More Does John McCain Want From Susan Rice?

    By Charles P. Pierce

    at 1:35PM

Susan Rice has explained herself. Everyone else in government seems satisfied except John McCain and Lindsey Graham.

Well, the one thing you have to give the spotlight-humpers currently trying to make a meal out of the career of Susan Rice is they’re nothing if not predictable.

Rice, and acting CIA director Michael Morell, took time out of their busy schedules to go up to Capitol Hill and soothe the wounded fee-fees of John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and the inexplicable Kelly Ayotte, who has decided that the foreign-policy credentials she burnished keeping New Hampshire safe from General Burgoyne have made her a serious player, and who apparently has been adopted by Grumpypants and Huckleberry Closetcase because they can convince her that Susan Rice went to prom with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. So Rice and Morell give them the courtesy of a meeting that these three had no real right to demand, and this is what we get from Huckleberry when the meeting is over.

The concerns I have are greater today than they were before, and we’re not even close to getting the basic answers,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), joined by McCain and Sen. Kelly Ayotte (N.H.), told reporters after the closed-door meeting. “I would place a hold on anybody who wanted to be promoted for any job who had a role in the Benghazi situation.”

This whole long con has passed now into the realm of pure McCarthyism.

    …………………………………………………..

What more can Rice do? She has explained herself. Petraeus has explained what happened and why. The entire apparatus of government seems satisfied with their explanation of the tragedy in Benghazi and has moved on. Rice can’t help it if Fox News is a monomaniacal propaganda mill, or that McCain is little more than a steaming lump of frustrated ambition at this point. The Foreign Relations committee will have at her, if the president follows through and nominates her, which he almost has to do now. The “American people,” on whose behalf McCain and Graham (and Ayotte, the permanent parenthetical in this lash-up) allegedly are acting, have accepted the explanation, where they are paying attention at all. This must baffle McCain, who believes that there is no country outside of a green room any more.

McCain and Graham — and the hapless Ayotte, who is clearly, and pathetically, looking past Rice all the way to the 2016 Iowa caucuses — have nothing. They want to beat up on Rice simply because they can’t beat up on the president, although McCain made a run at that over the weekend. And they came out of the meeting and ran their mouths about what went on because they knew Rice wasn’t going to go into details of that meeting in public. They are a pair of cowards, with a feckless rookie in train, and they are playing dangerous games with the country’s security. They hereafter should be ignored and, if Graham goes through with his threat of putting a hold on Rice’s nomination, Harry Reid should move his desk out onto Constitution Avenue, and no Democrat should cooperate with this clown ever again.

    – — – -Chuck Hagel being vetted for national security post – –

    – – — Former Nebraska Republican Senator Chuck Hagel is being vetted for a possible top national security post in the Obama administration, multiple sources told The Cable.

Hagel, who co-chairs President Barack Obama’s Intelligence Advisory Board, which provides independent advice on the effectiveness of the intelligence community, could be in contention for either secretary of state or secretary of defense, people familiar with the vetting process say.

Hagel, a moderate realist on foreign policy, would be a comfortable ideological fit for the president. He has publicly supported many of the administration’s foreign-policy moves from his perch at Georgetown University, while often excoriating the GOP for what he sees as a takeover by “the extreme right.”

Hagel was a harsh critic of George W. Bush’s foreign policy, especially his decision to invade and occupy Iraq, which he once called “an absolute replay of Vietnam.”

In the years since, he’s remained a strong critic of Republicans in Congress.

Jake is trying to weasel his way into the wallets and consciousness of liberal America, but it won’t work.

Notice how demure and respectful he was of Rachel Maddow. This from the same guy who refuses to accord the intrinsically decent, brilliant and duly elected black President the respect due him and his office.

We will not allow a petty lowlife asshole like Jake Tapper reinvent himself trying to peddle books to a diverse audience including supporters of President Obama who have not been paying close attention to Tapper’s shenanigans.

I make it my business to educate everyone I know – and strangers I meet – about Jake Tapper, Chuck Todd, Dana Milbank, Ed Henry and their ilk.

Jake Tapper is now and will forever be firmly defined by his own hateful, disrespectful attacks on President Obama for his own self-promotion and advancement and on behalf of the white right wing corporate masters he rabidly shills for.

Karma will surely mete out all the punishment due Jake Tapper. Brace yourself Jake!

I think Susan Rice will be our next Secretary of State. The GOP is playing games. Her foreign-policy work is SO in synch with PBO:
    ..
FROM 2005-2005, Dr. Rice was part of a project, The Phoenix Initiative, and wrote a Preface for the report, “Strategic Leadership: Framework for a Twenty-first Century National Security Strategy”:

“In this world, America has many more potential allies and friends, indispensable partners in tackling problems of common security. There is no illusion that international cooperation is easy. It is, though, essential to our own security as well as to international peace and prosperity. We must recognize that the world has not stood still over the past decade, waiting for America to reclaim the mantle of global leadership. Our ability to lead requires the kind of leadership—strategic leadership—laid out in this report.”

Susan E. Rice, Senior Fellow, The Brookings Institution (on leave)
    http://www.princeton.edu/~slaughtr/Articles/StrategicLeadership.pdf
    ….
PBO BEGAN meeting major foreign-policy figures in D.C, and by mid-2007, his core group of foreign policy advisors included Dr. Rice and Samantha Power, author of a book about genocide, “A Problem from Hell. Another member, Scott Gration, a retired Air Force major-general said of PBO:

“People are more alike than their cultures and religions,” he said. “When Obama talks about global citizens, it’s the same framework. You see, religion and culture—they’re the way people communicate their values. They want stability, order, education. This is just humanness. Then you add on your religion, your culture—that’s how you execute it.”

Nicholas Lemann, Worlds Apart: Obama, McCain, and the future of foreign policy. October 13, 2008 http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/10/13/081013fa_fact_lemann?currentPage=all

AND in August 12, 2009, as the Ambassador the the UN Dr. Rice, in remarks at NYU, said:

Today, as we steer a new course at the United Nations, our guiding principles are clear: We value the UN as a vehicle for advancing U.S. policies and universal rights. We work for change from within rather than criticizing from the sidelines. We stand strong in defense of America’s interests and values, but we don’t dissent just to be contrary. We listen to states great and small. We build coalitions. We meet our responsibilities. We pay our bills. We push for real reform. And we remember that, in an interconnected world, what’s good for others is often good for the United States as well.

Rice, U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, At New York University’s Center for Global Affairs and Center on International Cooperation, “A New Course in the World, a New Approach at the UN” http://www.archive.usun.state.gov/press_releases/20090812_163.html..

    – – -Stocks started the day in very negative territory but at 10 a.m. EST, the market turned positive on — you guessed it — hope that we may avert the fiscal cliff. Speaker Boehner and President Obama both made comments that gave investors hope that a deal will be reached by the new year. As a result, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (INDEX: ^DJI ) was up 0.65% near the end of trading, and the S&P 500 (INDEX: ^GSPC ) has risen 0.50%.

Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ ) led the Dow’s winners with a 2.5% gain today. The company said it uncovered documents that backed its accusations of accounting irregularities at Autonomy before its acquisition.
