What History Will Say About Obamacare and the Government Shutdown
On October 1, 2013, Democrats opened up a program to bring health care to all, while Republicans peacocked around trying to stop history. It’s obvious which side will be judged more kindly years from now, says Michael Tomasky.
by Michael Tomasky Oct 2, 2013 5:45 AM EDT
We sometimes don’t notice history as it’s unfolding right before us, so let’s stop and take note of what a historically momentous day Tuesday was. Twenty, 50 years from now, when historians or college professors are trying to describe to their readers and students what the difference was between the two political parties in our time, they will direct them to October 1, 2013. That one day says it all.
The Democratic Party was opening up its historic program to bring health care to all citizens, and the Republican Party was closing down the federal government, a fanatical minority manipulating the rules of our democracy and holding a gun to the country’s head, all because it wants to deny all citizens health care and is furious that it failed three times in that effort.
Tuesday perfectly expressed what these two parties have come to be about. The Democrats have many flaws, and money has corrupted them at certain times on certain issues almost as much as it has corrupted Republicans. And yes, sometimes some Democrats behave divisively, too. But at least they have had good moments, even great ones. The passage of Social Security. Medicare and Medicaid. Civil rights (and please, you cynical Everett Dirksen-invokers, give it a rest and go away; you would have long since drummed Dirksen out of your party today). Women’s rights. And most recently gay rights, including same-sex marriage; history will recall Barack Obama with admiration as the first sitting president willing to voice his support for that.
This is where you might expect me to say the evil Republicans were implacably opposed to every one of these great advances at every turn. But that isn’t the case. In 1935, majorities of Republicans backed Social Security—not by anywhere near the percentages Democrats did, but they supported it. Thirty years later, about half of Republicans in both houses of Congress backed Medicare and Medicaid. And yes, Dirksen and other Republicans were important allies for Lyndon Johnson on civil rights against the racist and reactionary Southern wing of his own party.
Our Democracy Is at Stake
By THOMAS L. FRIEDMAN
This time is different. What is at stake in this government shutdown forced by a radical Tea Party minority is nothing less than the principle upon which our democracy is based: majority rule. President Obama must not give in to this hostage taking — not just because Obamacare is at stake, but because the future of how we govern ourselves is at stake.
What we’re seeing here is how three structural changes that have been building in American politics have now, together, reached a tipping point — creating a world in which a small minority in Congress can not only hold up their own party but the whole government. And this is the really scary part: The lawmakers doing this can do so with high confidence that they personally will not be politically punished, and may, in fact, be rewarded. When extremists feel that insulated from playing by the traditional rules of our system, if we do not defend those rules — namely majority rule and the fact that if you don’t like a policy passed by Congress, signed by the president and affirmed by the Supreme Court then you have to go out and win an election to overturn it; you can’t just put a fiscal gun to the country’s head — then our democracy is imperiled.
This danger was neatly captured by Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank, when he wrote on Tuesday about the 11th-hour debate in Congress to avert the shutdown. Noting a shameful statement by Speaker John Boehner, Milbank wrote: “Democrats howled about ‘extortion’ and ‘hostage taking,’ which Boehner seemed to confirm when he came to the floor and offered: ‘All the Senate has to do is say ‘yes,’ and the government is funded tomorrow.’ It was the legislative equivalent of saying, ‘Give me the money and nobody gets hurt.’ ”
The lawmakers doing this can do so with high confidence that they personally will not be politically punished, and may, in fact, be rewarded.
media pundits still not taking responsibility for their role.
Ok so, seriously, ya’ll got to help me out here…
You mean to tell me that this shit can go on INDEFINITELY, till the damn WHEELS FALL OFF?
That 30 dudes can just take down the entire country, LEGALLY?
The craziest thing of all is that a Canadian is leading it. You can’t make this shit up. They’re trying to relive the civil war, they want to break PBO but it ain’t happening.
I’m giving you the side eye
hahahahahaha! I didn’t mean it like that cc lol.
What I mean is that they keep calling PBO who was born here a foreigner. Which we all know means black. But Cruz who was really was born in another country is ok with them. And we know why, because even though he’s not white he looks it and that’s good enough for them. He also spouts their racist crap. You know I love you lol.
Aw, CC I really do think we should stop teasing you about returning the Cruz to Canada. We really do love you folks. Returning him to his birthplace would be a totally evil thing to do to good peeps.
I have been thinking out some way better things for him & they will never find the body. I think this will be chapter #2 in my book.

Why all the innuendos about PBO & Biden? Why lump all of congress in with the nuts? The president nor the democrats caused the shutdown, it’s the republicans and the teanuts. I’m tired of this both sides do it crap, our msm is worthless.
Or the parenthetical statement about Cruz when he said he’d refuse it only after pressure was applied. The WashPost is stuck on stupid.
wrong place darn it! LOL
I blasted someone with the facts who said that this AM while I was waiting in line at a store. I probably got carried away but I did have everyone’s attention & they didn’t stone me to death. So maybe some of what I said got through. I did see a few bobbing heads.
Good for you AG!
I try! I figured they might kill me but they couldn’t eat me, not without a boat load of salsa, lol.

John Boehner is Using Veterans As Human Shields in Government Shutdown Fight
By: Jason Easley
Oct. 2nd, 2013
With every strategy that he is trying failing, Speaker John Boehner is trying to deflect blame for the government shutdown by using America’s veterans as political human shields.
In a statement, Speaker Boehner argued that President Obama is hurting our vets:
The White House and congressional Democrats aren’t satisfied with simply shutting the government down. Today the president reiterated his threat to veto a simple, common-sense measure to stand with our nation’s veterans and ensure that veterans’ programs are funded during the shutdown. This comes after the president and Democrats supported the Pay Our Military Act to take care of our men and women in uniform during this time (though they are still playing political games).
With the backlog of disability claims continuing to pile up and veterans having to wait longer and longer to receive their benefits, it is unconscionable that Democrats voted against the Honoring our Promise to America’s Veterans Act (H.J. Res. 72) yesterday to ensure that the Department of Veterans’ Affairs had the resources necessary to address this claims backlog. A small group of House Democrats voted for the measure, acknowledging their party’s strategy is indefensible. Every House Democrat will have the opportunity to do the right thing today.
The president can’t continue to complain about the impact of his government shutdown on veterans while pledging to veto a bill to help them.
Speaker Boehner left out a small, but essential fact. The piecemeal funding for veterans that House Republicans are trying to pass is actually 6.6 billion dollars less than what the budget calls for. Last night, Nancy Pelosi called out this scam on the House floor, “So, let’s not leave our veterans behind by leaving their children, their grandchildren, [and] their families – what they need. And just to go into it, this bill is billions of dollars less than what over 420 Members in this House [of Representatives] passed in June.”
Too late, Orange. Wes Clark an’em already said who’s hurting the vets. Try again, though! Too bad you cannot go with poor folks and babies–you already took money away from SNAP.
The Orange milk shake has already been consumed.

Thanks. It just makes my teeth itch when people try to downplay the racial component behind the PL’s motives. Leave them in the dust, they’re a lost cause.
That pisses me off too but you nailed it good!
Evening guys. Hope everybody had a good day.
Hmmm, I beginning to think when Patra said “pull up to my bumper baby, in your long black limousine”, she wasn’t really talking about a vehicle…hmmm. What do ya’ll think ?
You don’t even have to guess what I think. Have you ever visited the Lounge?
She stole that from Grace Jones who did it better.
We gotta teach the young’uns LOL
Did somebody say Grace!
I thought we did this last week? Oh well, the reprise.
lamh36, You are showing your youth, darling…
I actually do know about Grace Jones singing the song, I just happened to catch the song on VH1 Soul’s Island Soul block
This is just excellent:
I hope they also give him one of those ankle bracelets in shocking pink!
Good now he’ll know how it feels to be treated like a criminal.
Did you see the part about the Community Advisory Board? Notice to SunCity, this doesn’t mean your sorry asses. It means OUR community so Bite the Biggest Cactus!
Yes I did. Also he’s looking kind of long in the tooth isn’t it about time for him to retire.
It’s long past time for him to be embalmed!
Lord have mercy.
Rihanna has a video for “Pour It Up”….wooh. I’ll just say methinks Ri-Ri is trying to show Miley C how it’s done. Well, the video actually accurately portrays what the song seems to be about.
Now I saw the vid and was like ‘uh”. Now let’s see if the Miley C defenders, defend Rihanna’s right to be young and to “find herself”
Oh and POU guys, put your tongue back in your mouths and just go straight to the bad chair…lol.
Now you know these critics are not going to give Rihanna the “finding herself” meme. I can tell you right now the fact that Rihanna has an amazing body is not gonna win her any praise from the Miley fans.
I don’t care about either of them, it’s like lets see who can shock the most now. But you’re right they’ll have a fit about this video.
I do not care for Miley or Rhianna either. However, I am not mad at them. They are giving their fans what their fans want. Hell I am too old for that mess. I am a 90′s girl.
I hear ya Tafr.
I think Miley’s ok singing wise and such, I’m not much a fan of her music, but I do get it. Still in terms of “ghetto-fabulousness” and true “urban” props, Miley is def a safer white man’s version of Rihanna at this point. Ri-Ri owns her sexuality and sexual power and don’t care to tone it down for nobody. It’s def not a fad for her
And I can’t even say that I’m a TRUE Rihanna fan, but I do give her props for not being afraid to show her carribean roots and if u been to any reggae club, then you know them girls get down and dirty and let it all hang out on the dance floor
they don’t call it the “dutty wine” for nothing…lol
She’s just now putting out a video for “Pour It Up”?
apparently so Sepia. Pour It Up has been out a while, but it was the last single from the last album right?
I dunno. I just know that “Pour It Up” was on steady rotation on the radio all summer. She should’ve been had that video out.
Oh, I know what your saying. It really was on even before the summer. I’m not sure why they waited so long to put a video together, but she has been on her European tour (and pissing off audiences coming in 80 minutes late!)
Man, I just finished watching the tennis match with Serena and Capriati, when she all those incredibly horrible calls a few years back. That match was a travesty.
I still can’t watch that match without my pressure going up. Capriati knew they were bad calls but didn’t say anything. I can’t stand her she’s a cheat who shouldn’t be in the tennis hall of fame.
I know, and I was thinking watching Capriati, I wonder if she was on steroids, she bulked up pretty fast that year.
There was a rumor about that at the time.
Really? I never heard the rumours. Wouldn’t surprise me in the least.
I heart these people:
DC-Area restaurants offering specials for furloughed govt. employees, raising prices for members of Congress.
That’s very a nice gesture.
I wish taxi services, dry cleaners and all manner of the service industry would do the same.
I love this!

House GOP Blocks Vote On Re-opening Government Share
DYLAN SCOTT – OCTOBER 2, 2013, 6:33 PM EDT
The House rejected Wednesday an effort by House Democrats to put a clean temporary spending bill on the floor, closing one opportunity to re-open the federal government.
The complicated process went like this. House Republicans proposed a partial spending bill to fund the National Parks Service. House Democrats moved to replace that bill with the Senate-passed spending bill that would fund the government as a whole.
House Republican leadership rejected the motion. House Democrats appealed the rejection. House Republicans moved to block the appeal, and the House then voted 230-194, largely along party lines, to block the appeal.
If the House had allowed the appeal, there might have been a chance for the Senate spending bill to come to the floor for a vote Wednesday evening. The expectation is that the Senate bill would be approved if put up for a vote, with moderate Republicans joining Democrats to pass it, ending the government shutdown.
Conservatives Made It Up: Harry Reid Didn’t Dismiss Funding Treatment For Children With Cancer
Conservative media are selectively and deceptively quoting from an
exchange between CNN’s Dana Bash Senate and Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to make it appear as if he dismissed the plight of
cancer-stricken children being denied access to clinical trials due to the shutdown of the federal government. In fact, Reid said that legislators should fully fund the government, rather than force different groups to fight over funding.
Specifically, conservatives are claiming that Reid replied to a reporter’s question, “If you can help one child with cancer, why wouldn’t you?” by saying “why would we want to do that?” In fact, Reid was responding to Sen. Chuck Schumer, who had interjected, saying “why pit one against the other?”
SMH….anyone who believes anything these right wing nuts say is too gullible to live.
Don’t toy with the debt ceiling, bank CEOs warn
After meeting with President Obama at the White House on Wednesday, the CEOs of some of the nation’s largest financial institutions warned that the government shutdown, or worse, a failure to lift the government’s debt ceiling, could have an “extremely adverse” impact on an economic recovery that is still struggling to gain steam.

What happened to the “caving”??
“Congressional Leaders Report No Progress On Shutdown After Meeting With Obama”
From President Obama’s interview on CNBC this afternoon:
HARWOOD: —before I let you go. I was looking at poll data on the health care law the other day. Very, very popular among African-Americans, marginally popular among Hispanics, very unpopular among whites. What are the implications for the country on this issue and many others in our elections and legislatively of a politics that are polarized not just by party, but by race?
PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, you know, what I’d say John is that when you break out what’s actually in the Affordable Care Act, it’s popular among all groups. If you ask the ordinary person, “Do you think it’s a good thing that insurance companies have to let young people stay on their parents’ plan until their 26?” “Absolutely.” “Do you think it’s a good idea that— insurance companies have to spend 80% of premiums on people’s healthcare and not on administrative costs?” “Absolutely.”
“Do you think it’s a good idea that people with pre-existing conditions should be able to get health insurance?” They say yes. So— the challenge we have— with— the healthcare law is similar to the challenge we’ve had in our politics more broadly. And that is that— there have been caricatures of what we’ve been trying to do. There’s always been— some levels of polarization— in our politics.
Those have gotten worse— in part because of gerrymandering. So members of Congress have no incentive to reach out to all groups. Partly it’s gotten worse because you got these super PACs who are coming in and- financing advertising that stirs up polarization. And the media has gotten more polarized.
But— I don’t think— when you look at the health care laws specifically that it’s an issue— that’s going to break down in terms of race. The majority of folks who are uninsured in this country, even though they’re working, and will be helped by the Affordable Care Act, the majority of them are going to be white, not African-American or Hispanic.

Could you tell me what they were talking about?

Meet The People Who Were Eager To Sign Up For Obamacare On The Very First Day
By Tara Culp-Ressler on October 2, 2013 at 10:56 am
On Tuesday, Obamacare’s state-level insurance marketplaces — also called “exchanges” — opened to the public. It marked the first day of a six-month enrollment period that will allow uninsured Americans to shop for a health plan that meets their needs. Considering the confusion that’s been swirling around the health care reform law, it wasn’t clear how many people would take advantage of the new opportunity to enroll for coverage on Tuesday. But initial reports suggest there was a strong public appetite for learning more about Obamacare, and enrollment centers around the country were swamped helping a flood of interested people sign up.
Here are just a few examples of the people who were so eager to sign up for Obamacare that they started the process on the very first day:
Mary Jones from Alabama: Jones has gone without health insurance for years because she hasn’t been able to afford it. Her husband is eligible for Medicare, but Jones’ private insurance options are too expensive and offer coverage that’s too skimpy for her needs. “It’s a great feeling being able to have affordable health care and I thank God, the president, and the United States of America for being able to have it,” Jones told the Anniston Star after signing up for a plan under Obamacare on Tuesday. Her husband, Marvin, agreed. “The premiums for this are lower, hundreds of dollars a month lower. And it offers all the coverage my wife needs,” he noted.
Phyllis Brown from Arizona: 58-year-old Brown lost her Medicaid coverage when the state contracted coverage for childless adults in 2011, and has gone uninsured since then. She’s struggled with high blood pressure and heart problems, has been hospitalized four time, and ended up accumulating at least $20,000 in unpaid medical bills. She says she once went for months without taking her heart medication because she couldn’t afford it. Now, under Obamacare, she’s eligible for public insurance again. The Arizona Republic reports that Brown was “thrilled” to enroll on Tuesday. “I couldn’t wait,” she said. “It’s a big relief.”
Read this exchange…..Jay Carney deserves a medal.
ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jon Karl spent several minutes repeatedly asking Jay Carney variations on the question of apportioning blame for the government shutdown to President Obama.
“Does the President bear any responsibility whatsoever for what’s going on, for this mess?” Karl began.
“Well, I’m not sure what you mean,” Carney replied. “I mean, the President..”
“Does he have any blame for the government shutdown? Any at all?” Karl repeated.
Carney replied, “Look, the President is President of the United States and it is his responsibility to try to work with Congress in a spirit of compromise…”
“And that hasn’t…” Karl began.
“Well, he’s… look, has he or has he not put forward a compromise budget proposal?” Carney asked. “The answer is yes.”
“But does he bear any responsibility?” Karl persisted. “It’s a simple question. Does he bear any responsibility for this mess?”
“He certainly did not vote to shut the government down,” Carney answered. “And if that’s what you’re asking, no, he did not vote to shut the government down. The Republicans did.”
“No, I’m asking if he bears any responsibility,” Karl repeated.
“Jon, he did not… Republicans in Congress chose to shut the government down,” Carney said. “The option to keep it open was available to them. It’s an option that a majority of the House of Representatives supports, a bipartisan majority…”
” But hasn’t the President failed to create an environment where this stuff doesn’t happen?” Karl asked, adding “I mean, I’m asking.”
“No. He’s had multiple meetings and dinners…” Carney began.
“So he’s done nothing wrong in all of this?” Karl asked. “This is all the Republicans’ doing on their own, that the President…”
With impatient amusement, Carney said, “Well, Jon, you can do an essay, or decide for yourself, and make those judgments. What I’m telling you is that this year, the President, in a very public way, reported on by all of you, reached out to Republicans and offered to find common ground on budget issues — and didn’t just talk about it; put…”
“But…” Karl said.
“Hold on,” Carney continued, ”put those ideas in a concrete budget, causing a lot of consternation in his own party, because some of the choices he made and some of the decisions he was willing to embrace were not popular among all Democrats, or Democrat support groups. But he was willing to do it because he knew that that’s what it would take to reach a compromise with Republicans who are also willing to compromise. And he had very good conversations with a number of Republican senators and members of Congress. He had Paul Ryan in here at one point during that process.”
“What we haven’t seen, unfortunately, is a commensurate willingness by the Republicans to put on paper a proposal that represents a compromise, that moves off their insistence that — represented by the Ryan budget.,” Carney added. “But the President is open to doing that. He’s open to having those conversations.”
I wouldn’t blame him if one day he pulls out a can of pepper spray and takes out the whole front row. These fools could make Mother Teresa snap.
I wouldn’t blame him if one day he pulls out a can of pepper spray and takes out the whole front row.
When I have that thought, Tapper’s holding an AK but your point is shared by many.
What a jackass!
How does a person like that even still have a job as a “news reporter”? Caught red-handed passing off GOP lies and talking points as supposed White House emails re: Benghazi. He quite literally spent months publishing LIES; this is not merely an allegation, this is proven fact and a real scandal. His lack of professionalism, judgment, and unabashed agenda-driven “journalism” should totally disqualify him from the WH Press Corps. It says it all about how much the beltway media is strangling this country from the inside out with their inanity, hubris, incestuous nature, and egomania, that someone like Jon Karl is even in a position to question the WH about anything. I don’t care if he was reciting the alphabet, how can any one trust a “reporter” like him? Just speaks volumes that he hasn’t even lost the confidence of his employer because clearly his job is not to disseminate news but to spread anti-PBO propaganda.
Why does this a..hole have a job?
Whatever Jay gets paid it’s not nearly enough. I would have that job for all of 5 minutes before I got fired for hurting somebody’s feelings.
They don’t want black folk on ACA period. I said it a while back, the main reason US does not have a socialized medicine system is because it’s not an homogenous society, they wouldn’t mind ACA if it was for white folk only is the bottom line but the rest of y’all black and Latino get it too..lhell naw is their scream. Harwood, chuckie toad, and all them white boys showing their asses. I am loving the exposure of Americas underbelly to the rest of the world. The hypocrisy alone would make even North Korea want to change and give the President another foreign policy win. it had to be Obama to expose it all…he was the perfect messenger with the right temper. Exposed left, right and middle …loves it
Harry Truman went to bed believing he had achieved National Healthcare.
He was done in by the Jim Crow politicians who knew that if Healthcare was deemed a RIGHT – then there was no way that they could keep up American Apartheid in national hospitals.
There was a picture from yesterday in the Oval Office with the President and some new Obamacare enrollees…yes, I noticed all the non-White people in the picture, and commented that looking at the picture, it’s why the GOP is madder than a mutha about Obamacare.
It’s not a coincidence that GOP Governors in 7 of the 10 poorest states have refused to expand Medicaid or set up the exchanges…it’s because those states have large Black populations – plain and simple.
Think about this…..healthcare is the final part of the social safety net that every other industrialized country enjoys..and, it took a Black man, Barack Obama, to ensure that, unlike with Social Security and Medicare, THIS part of the social safety net will BEGIN not excluding huge chunks of the American populace. Remember, when Social Security began, FDR excluded professions that ‘ coincidentally’ had large numbers of Blacks employed in them (this was snark – wasn’t no coincidence). Same thing for Medicare….65 was chosen as the age, because GUESS WHO had a shorter life expectancy when it was designed….yeah, you know the answer.
This too, limiting social security…no to domestics and agricultural workers.
That was the downside of having the Dixiecrats be part of the New Deal coalition. They worked overtime to stop blacks from benefiting from those programs.
Broken down like a fraction as usual, Aleth. Racism is one of the most potent weapons in this country used to enforce the economic status quo by providing something to poor and middle class white people which is so valuable to a fraction of them, that they are willing to provide economics to an elite in order to maintain a race-based class system. Anything which seriously threatens to upend or challenge racism in this country is fought tooth and nail, which is why Dr. King knew he would be killed.
I am saving this GN…succinct and subject to multiple levels of analysis. I mo keep linking to the ebony August 1965 publication the white problem in America. If you have not read it, read it the articles are great and relevant..I know y’all published excerpts a while back http://books.google.com/books?id=N94DAAAAMBAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=gbs_ge_summary_r&cad=0#v=onepage&q&f=false
It’s true and alludes at great length to your statement. Someone needs to tell Tim wise to read this publication cause ain’t nothing he saying new…we know them all.
I noticed that what drags down the approval of Obamacare are a large amount of white people. When they call the legislation by it’s proper name the Affordable Care Act then the number goes up.
The racism and hate oozes out these people.

WWII Memorial Protestor To RNC Chair: ‘Go Do Your Job, Idiot’
Posted on October 2, 2013 by Servaas
A lot of hoopla has been made about groups of veterans denied entry into the World War IImemorial in D.C. (though they have subsequently been allowed to tour the memorial).
Despite causing the government shutdown, the GOP has incredibly tried to win over the veterans to its side. Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus showed up on scene to make a public offer to fund the memorial for 30 days.
Not everyone is down for their cause, though.
At least one protester reminded Priebus the shut down was in part his own party’s fault.

Now that is funny
Boehner Says Obama Still Won’t Negotiate
Speaker John Boehner “emerged from White House talks on Wednesday to say that President Barack Obama again refused to negotiate with them to end a government shutdown,” Reuters reports.
It doesn’t sound like there’s anyone to bargain with, grand or otherwise.

I know this has been posted upteen times, but I’m posting it again. Cause it really needs to be seen to be believed. People are so against Obama personally, that when asked if they prefer “Obamacare” to the “Affordable Care Act”…they actually said Obamacare. When told that ACA and Obamacare was the same damn thing. They just couldn’t believe it. Now tell me again that certain people just don’t like the ACA because is was done by Obama!!!
It’s now my go to response to people spouting RWNJ talking points, particularly those I know who voted for Romney.
Jimmy Kimmel asks: Six of One – Obamacare vs. The Affordable Care Act
Did you notice the ease of ” certain” people to just have a no answer immediately Obama is said. On some of them pink faces was just plan hate, next…..
Glad he did it.
Glad he made them look like the idiots they are.
Glad it’s gone viral.
That SVU episode that blended Paula Deen and Trayvon’s murder was tonight
Natalie Jackson @NatJackEsq3m
A more real take on the case would have been if Law & Order showed how some on the police force participated in the tanking of the case.
I can’t watch something like that. Trayvon’s murder was a lynching and this child was convicted of his own murder while his barbaric killer continues to behave with violence while the national media continues to slander the kid. Just can’t watch that turned into entertainment.
I didn’t watch it either. I followed comments on twitter though and it was as I expected it to be.
Speaking of Trayvon, fist bumps to The Game for getting a Trayvon tattoo. Racists were circulating Game’s picture and claiming that he was the “real” Trayvon (Game is a grown ass man in his 30s while Trayvon is clearly a skinny kid, may his murderer and police accomplices rot in hell). Game eventually responded by tattooing the child to himself and speaking out about the unjust nature of the Zimmerman trial. All of the protest in every form makes a difference. Many thanks to him.

—–The House approved three targeted spending resolutions to the Senate on Wednesday, daring Senate Democrats to vote against measures to immediately fund the District of Columbia, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Park Service.
The bills are part of the House Republican plan to pass spending bills in areas where there is bipartisan agreement in order to spare some pieces of the government from the shutdown.
But while Democrats support these priorities, they mostly opposed attempts to pass them in the House. Democrats said Republicans were using the bills as part of a political strategy to mitigate the effects of the shutdown when they should instead pass a Senate spending resolution that funds the entire government.

Good read and action items by the essayist who used to be Soothsayer at burnt orange:
CI: National Week of Action Against School Pushout
The school to prison to prison pipeline is the direct result of educational policies and practices that have transformed our schools from sites of opportunity and inclusion into centers of criminalization and exclusion. Over the past two decades, the proliferation of “zero tolerance” policies and an increased police presence at schools have combined to shape the school to prison pipeline via the “criminalization of school discipline.”

Well I can’t speak for the community as a whole, but here in NOLA, one of the biggest if not THE bigest Bounce rap artist is Big Freedia, who just happens to be a gay man.
Freedia is the REAL deal and a big time celeb in the bounce genre and she’s been doing big things outside of NOLA. She currently has a reality show on FUSE network. Ya’ll should check her out.

— –This Day in Black History: Oct. 2, 1967- —
– - –Renowned civil rights litigator Thurgood Marshall
was sworn in as the first African-American U.S. Supreme Court justice on Oct. 2, 1967. As chief counsel for the NAACP, he had won several landmark cases before that very court, including Brown v. Board of Education, essentially ending legal segregation in public facilities and accommodations.
President John F. Kennedy first appointed Marshall to the bench in
1961 to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals. He was not confirmed until 1962 because several Southern senators opposed his nomination. In 1965, President Lyndon Johnson appointed him solicitor general of the United States. In that role, he won 14 of the 19 cases he argued before the Supreme Court. Johnson nominated him in 1967 to fill the seat being vacated by Supreme Court Justice Tom Clark, where he remained for 24 years.
Marshall continued to challenge discrimination during his tenure on the high court. Declining health forced him to retire in 1991, and he died in 1993.

Commissaries in the U.S. where military families can buy inexpensive groceries tax-free are shutting doors Wednesday due to the shutdown. And that could create a financial hardship for those who depend on the stores’ steeply discounted prices to make ends meet — particularly young service members with families to feed or retired veterans on fixed incomes.
About 12 million people — including military personnel, retirees and their families — are eligible to shop at the 246 commissaries on
military installations worldwide. The commissaries typically carry
everything a national supermarket chain would — including brand-name products — but at much lower prices than their commercial competitors.

Granted, the very idea of rating Reagan as one of the worst presidents ever will infuriate his many right-wing acolytes and offend Washington insiders who have made a cottage industry out of buying some protection from Republicans by lauding the 40th President.—

Despite the grievous harm that Reagan’s presidency inflicted on the American Republic and the American people, it may take many more years before a historian has the guts to put this deformed era into a truthful perspective and rate Reagan where he belongs — near the bottom of the presidential list.

—– –In their first meeting since a budget impasse shuttered many federal operations, President Obama told Republican leaders on Wednesday that he would negotiate with them only after they agreed to the funding needed to reopen the government and also to an essential increase in the nation’s debt limit, without add-ons.
The president’s position reflected the White House view that the
Republicans’ strategy is failing. His meeting with Congressional
leaders, just over an hour long, ended without any resolution.
As they left, Republican and Democratic leaders separately reiterated their contrary positions to waiting reporters.
