Wednesday Afternoon Thread: Todd Jones Y’all

Zandar@ZandarVTS

Oh and here’s my ATF head, Shabazz Shootybang X. Y’all have a nice day. *drops mic*

(Ok, so his name is actually B. Todd Jones…but the effect is the same)

President Barack Obama intends to nominate B. Todd Jones as his choice to be the next leader of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Jones is the U.S. Attorney for Minnesota. He has served as the acting director of the ATF since late 2011 – taking over as the agency was embroiled in controversy surrounding an operation against gun smuggling.

Jones has continued to serve in both roles, spending about half of his time in Washington and half in Minnesota.

In his first weeks as acting ATF director, Jones “hit the reset button” and assembled a team of law enforcement executives, to get the ATF back to its core mission of fighting violent crime.

His nomination must still be confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

American hostages seized in attack on gas facility in Algeria
An unspecified number of Americans were taken hostage by Islamist guerrillas early Wednesday in a brazen attack on a remote gas-production facility in Algeria, the U.S. State Department said.

The attack — which reportedly resulted in the death of two people and the capture of several dozen foreign workers, most of them European — appeared to be retaliation for Algeria’s decision to allow France to use its airspace to send warplanes to neighboring Mali, where French forces have been conducting airstrikes and support operations to aid Malian troops in their battle against Islamic insurgents.

Good afternoon POU! I see shit is being flung from all corners today.
The NRA knows they done effed up and PBO is gonna whoop that ass.
Issa is once again using someone’s tragic death for his witch hunt and the emprogs are gonna go along with it. This is gonna backfire on both of their asses. Finally I find it ironic that the very people who were pissed at repubs for using Ambassador Stevens death for political purposes are doing the very same thing with Swartz.

Obama unveils sweeping gun reforms, 23 executive actions

    By Steve Benen
    Wed Jan 16, 2013 12:32 PM EST

Pundits who predicted a month ago that President Obama wouldn’t have the political courage to take on the gun lobby and try to change the politics surrounding the status quo were mistaken.

President Barack Obama unveiled sweeping new policies Wednesday aimed at limiting gun violence, teeing up a political showdown that will pit the broad public popularity for many gun control measures against Congress’s tepid appetite for approving the most stringent restrictions on gun ownership.

“While there is no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence completely, no piece of legislation that will prevent every tragedy, every act of evil,” Obama said at a mid-day announcement at the White House, “if there’s even one thing we can do to reduce this violence, if there’s even one life that can be saved, then we have an obligation to try it.”

The list of proposals from Vice President Biden’s task force on gun violence is not short, but it includes universal background checks, a ban on “military-style” assault weapons, limiting ammunition magazines to 10 rounds, and strengthening existing penalties for gun trafficking.

The president also took 23 executive actions — which will not require congressional approval — though nearly all are fairly modest in scope. They include providing gun dealers providing guidance on how to run background checks for private sellers, nominating an ATF director (the Senate has refused to confirm an ATF director for six years), informing state health officials about the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover, and launching “a national dialogue … on mental health.”

Obama conceded that the bulk of the reforms must be approved by lawmakers and challenged them to act.

Don’t blame me for election law, Rick Scott tells black lawmakers

TALLAHASSEE — Facing a highly critical group of black legislators, Gov. Rick Scott largely defended his record Tuesday but distanced himself from a controversial election law that led to fewer early-voting days and long lines.

Scott agreed with black lawmakers that the 2011 election law contributed to the chaos at the polls in November, including long lines all over the state and up to seven-hour waits in Miami-Dade. But Scott, who is seeking re-election in 2014, said it was largely a decision of the Legislature.

“It was not my bill,” Scott said. “We’ve got to make changes, I agree. … The Legislature passed it. I didn’t have anything to do with passing it.”

Scott signed the bill into law in 2011. His administration spent more than $500,000 in legal fees in a largely successful defense of the law, though a federal judge struck down new restrictions on groups that register voters.

No wonder Wayne La Pierre wrote this:

“I warned you this day was coming and now it’s here,” LaPierre wrote. “This is the fight of the century and I need you on board with NRA now more than ever. My strength, and the strength of our entire NRA organization comes from you and your strong commitment to our membership. I need you in our corner TODAY.

“The NRA sat in on a White House meeting that was sold to the public as an ‘open discussion’ about how to improve school safety,” he continued. “But that was a dirty lie. They didn’t listen to gun owners’ concerns … they didn’t consider any real solutions on how we can keep our kids safe. Instead Barack Obama, Joe Biden and their gun ban allies in Congress only want to BLAME you, VILIFY you, BULLY you, and STRIP you of your Second Amendment freedoms.”

Wrote LaPierre, “Right now, they’re steamrolling ahead with legislation that would ban your guns, register your ammunition purchases, and even force you to register the firearms you already own with Obama’s anti-gun bureaucrats.”

    – -Poll: Obama approval rises, as does public support for gun control – -

    – — – -President Obama’s approval rating has seen a modest jump in favorability over the last month, as the public seems to have warmed to the idea of stricter gun laws, a new survey found.

According to a Time-CNN survey released Wednesday, 55 percent said they approve of the job the president is doing, against 43 who said they disapprove. Obama’s job approval was at 52 percent in the same poll conducted in late December, a marked increase from his first term, when he generally tracked in the 40 percent range.

The public’s support for tighter gun laws nearly matches Obama’s approval rating, with 55 percent saying they support stricter measures, against 44 who said they oppose, according to the poll.

Vice President Biden, who spearheaded the president’s gun task force initiative, enjoys the best rating of all at 59 percent approval, up from 54 in December. – –

From May but well worth the read

US honors black federal law officer killed in 1883

WASHINGTON — William Henderson Foote was a black federal law enforcement official in America’s Deep South at a time of heightened racial tensions, tasked with collecting liquor tax revenue from wholesalers and retailers in post-Reconstruction Mississippi. He joined the military at the start of the Civil War and later was politically active, championing civil rights and ascending to the state legislature.

But his name was largely lost to history after his 1883 murder in Mississippi by a white mob irate that he had protected a black man who was targeted for a beating.

Nearly 130 years later, federal authorities on Monday honored Foote by adding his name to a memorial wall at the headquarters of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The ATF says Foote, a deputy collector at one of the bureau’s predecessor agencies, was the first black federal law enforcement official to die in the line of duty after Reconstruction.

    Defining ‘power grabs’ down

    By Steve Benen

    Wed Jan 16, 2013 2:28 PM EST.

Reince Priebus, chairman of the Republican National Committee, is not pleased with President Obama’s new agenda on preventing gun violence, but Priebus’ statement raises some follow-up questions the RNC may want to consider.

“President Obama’s series of gun control measures amount to an executive power grab that may please his political base but will not solve the problems at hand. He paid lip service to our fundamental constitutional rights, but took actions that disregard the 2nd Amendment and the legislative process. Representative government is meant to give voice to the people; President Obama’s unilateral executive action ignores this principle.”

I suspect we’ll hear quite a bit of this kind of talk today and as the larger policy debate continues, but it’s worth pausing to consider what actually happened this morning.

The bulk of the president’s agenda, not surprisingly, requires legal changes, which necessarily means it will be dependent on congressional action. At the same time, Obama also went as far as he could go in areas that don’t need congressional approval, taking steps like nominating a new AFT director and informing state health officials about the scope of mental health services that Medicaid plans must cover.

These “amount to an executive power grab” because … well, actually I haven’t the foggiest idea why they amount to an executive power grab. Here’s a question for Priebus: name one of the executive orders that seems offensive and/or legally excessive. Just one.

    The NRA as ‘insurgent outlier’
Posted by Greg Sargent on January 16, 2013 at 11:41 am

MSNBC’s First Read crew makes a great point about this:

Over the past 30 days since the Newtown shootings, the NRA has brought a sledgehammer to the debate, not even attempting nuance or persuasion. First the combative Wayne LaPierre press conference at the National Press Club. Then LaPierre’s uncompromising appearance on “Meet the Press.” And now this web video.

The NRA is acting as if this were 2001 — after beating Al Gore and facing a cowed Democratic Party. Instead, this is 2013 — after the NRA was unable to beat Obama and after Democrats expanded their majority in the U.S. Senate. The danger the NRA is facing, especially after releasing this new video, is that it’s potentially alienating the handful of Democratic allies it has. The Harry Reids, the Joe Manchins, the Jon Testers

While the NRA has always had a deeper reach within the Republican Party, what has made it particularly powerful is its influence inside both parties (a la AIPAC). But how the NRA has reacted to Newtown may very well have reduced its influence to just one political party. And if they decide to keep their attacks focused on the president, they will end up alienating the rest of the Democratic Party.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/plum-line/wp/2013/01/16/the-nra-as-insurgent-outlier/

    • nellcote

And don’t forget that disgusting NRA video game aimed at children.

  • GN

    @BlackCanseco
You know how many Blackfolk would have to get shot for a president to sign 23 Executive Gun Orders w/o question? ALL. OF. US. #guncontrol

I don’t think this is quite fair. Not disputing that the country at large has turned a blind, disinterested eye to the number of black kids killed via gun violence, but the same isn’t true of PBO.

This person’s response makes more sense to me:

    @tanyasinwi
@BlackCanseco Good one. But seriously, some crimes hit a nerve, like the 4 little girls in Birmingham.

20 kids, at one time, 6 years old and under, shot down at their school for absolutely no reason or purpose by a typical mass shooter was gonna galvanize gun controllers. Again, not disputing the disparate treatment of gun violence inflicted on people of color (we barely even hear about the Sikh temple victims anymore for one example of too many to count), but I think that what brought PBO to an “enough is enough” moment was the age and number of the Sandy Hook victims, not the race of some of them.

    • GC

It’s the age. I picture their little bodies. I don’t give a damn what color they are. If they were black, there would be an added layer of “enough, America, enough!” But it doesn’t matter. All I know is they won’t have the chance to live 90% of their lives.

      • GN

Indeed, even seeing those images of the little kids being led out single file with their eyes closed makes me well up to this day. It’s just almost too terrible to contemplate. —- -Michael Tubbs, a 22 year-old Stanford graduate, is the youngest ever city councilman to be elected in his hometown of Stockton, C.A.
Born into poverty to a teenage mother and father who is in prison, Tubbs grew up determined to make a difference.

Upon graduating from high school, Tubbs attended Stanford, where he earned a bachelor’s in Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and a master’s in Policy, Organization and Leadership Studies.

    – - -Top 10 blacks in technology to look out for in 2013- -

    – - – -Myth-busting has never been an easy task, particularly when it seems that the latest game in business is feigning that excellent people of color do not exist in a particular industry. The resulting excuse for their absence is that, therefore, they cannot be included. Is this belief a very convenient way to guard the ranks in order to generate greater prosperity for the insiders — or just a sad side effect of the all-too-small social circles of the business elite? Regardless of its origins, we must begin to move quickly past this prevalent phenomenon, particularly in the area of technology, because in that sector diversity truly offers the very best advantage in the form of ideas and creativity.

This is important to the very growth of the technology industry’s development, which is critical to the economic expansion of our country.

There are many interesting and intelligent people of color contributing in a number of ways within the tech space, although to look at most magazine articles and industry panels, one would not know it.

    – - – - -SNIP – –
    – -Criticizing the methodology used in selecting the speakers rather than promoting quotas, a blog post by tech developer and designer Aral Balkan was a particularly important and a thoughtful part of the analysis simmering over the issue. – –Meet The Republicans Who Want To Impeach Obama Over Gun Regulations – -

    - — -Republicans and pro-gun advocates are outraged over President Obama’s 23 executive orders to curb gun violence in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre. Though executive orders have always been a standard element of the presidency, invocations of dictators like Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin and Saddam Hussein are becoming commonplace in the right-wing blogosphere. In reality, Obama has issued fewer executive orders than any other American president in the last century. The executive orders signed today focus on strengthening background checks, making it easier for law enforcement to track guns used in crimes, and ending the freeze on gun research.

Regardless of the facts, the movement to impeach Obama over these executive actions is spreading from fringe conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones and taking hold among lawmakers and Republican activists. Here are five people calling for Obama’s impeachment:

The Second Amendment Was Ratified to Preserve Slavery

Founders Patrick Henry, George Mason, and James Madison were totally clear on that … and we all should be too.

    January 15, 2013 | by Thom Hartmann:

The real reason the Second Amendment was ratified, and why it says “State” instead of “Country” (the Framers knew the difference – see the 10th Amendment), was to preserve the Slave Patrol Militias in the Southern States, which was necessary to get Virginia’s vote.

    • creolechild

Another lesser known historical fact is that Lincoln’s first declaration ending slavery in the United States exempted border states whose inhabitants were, for the most part, wealthy slaveowners. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, as well as other women’s rights activists lobbied Congress for a Constitutional amendment that would permanently put an to slavery throughout the entire country. No doubt their efforts placed added pressure on Lincoln, who penned a second declaration that was ratified by Congress and became enacted into law as the Thirteenth Amendment.

Westboro Whackos Will Be At The Presidential Inauguration- With Permission

They are the group of people everyone loves to hate, because they hate everyone. Here they are, poised to strike again. Fred Phelps and his infamous clan of bigots will be at the Presidential Inauguration- with a permit. Yep, that’s right. The Westboro Whackos will be at the President’s inauguration, and they will be street legal- that is, if they show up. They have threatened protests in the past then failed to show, though they have shown up to protest President Obama, so we’ll just have to wait and see. They did once protest outside the school that Obama’s daughters attend, calling them the “***** ** *****” and “***** ** * ********* *******.” If they show up, they will be protesting on Pennsylvania Avenue on the north sidewalk.[....]

Now, it could be argued that this is nothing more than a ploy for attention, and that all news media should simply ignore the antics of Fred Phelps and his band of lunatics, but it is very difficult to to do that. Also, something the general public needs to know is this: the Westboro Baptist church has the law on their side. They protest at these places in order to provoke people into attacking them, and, thus, filing and winning law suits. So, should you encounter this band of religious lunatics, beware, for they are there to provoke you into doing something which infringes upon their rights, so that they can sue you and then say that God is on their side. I hate giving them the satisfaction of giving them press, but please don’t give them the satisfaction of doing their bidding.

I watched a special on youtube of them recently and I will never forget the smirk on this woman’s face after one of their protests, she was so glad to have upset people. That was her main purpose. I hope that a good slice of the crowd around them during the inauguration just laughs; don’t even give them the satisfaction of getting angry because that’s what they want. They run a cult, don’t care, and need the “persecution” to feed the siege mentality and keep the cult together. Laughing at them and pitying how pathetic it is to be in a cult, brainwashed by trusted relatives, is the best response.

Shortly before President Obama unveiled his proposals for gun control today, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick announced his own set of proposals which he will elaborate on tomorrow during the State of the State Address.

(Reuters) – Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick introduced a new series of gun laws on Wednesday that would tighten rules on sales of weapons and ammunition, in the wake of last month’s deadly school shooting in neighboring Connecticut. [...]

The proposed Massachusetts legislation would require gun buyers to undergo background checks even when they made purchases at gun shows, limit buyers to purchasing one gun per month and reduce access to high-powered ammunition.

It would also require state courts to share relevant mental health records with state and criminal databases used to conduct background checks on potential gun buyers.

But Reid, who has opposed a ban on assault weapons in the past, offered no details on what kind of legislation he would be willing to bring to the floor.

President Obama’s gun proposals on Wednesday including a ban on “military-style assault weapons” and a limit on ammunition magazines to 10 rounds.

Reid over the weekend suggested the assault weapons ban, at least, stood little chance of becoming law because of opposition in the House. As a result, he suggested the Senate might not take it up.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police released a statement today endorsing President Obama’s executive orders and legislative proposals on gun control.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) commends President Obama and Vice President Biden for the comprehensive package of proposals they announced to combat gun violence. The IACP believes that the proposals and actions reflect an effective, balanced approach to addressing the plague of gun violence in our communities and nation. As this process moves forward, the IACP will continue to work with the Administration, members of Congress, and public safety leaders across the country to enact these much needed reforms.

For many years, the IACP has been a leading voice in efforts to reduce gun violence. Our membership was, and remains, a leading proponent of universal background checks for gun purchases, the ban on military style assault weapons, high capacity magazines, and ensuring that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) has both a permanent director and sufficient resources to enforce our nation’s gun laws. The adoption of these, and other reasonable measures, will certainly assist in reducing the level of gun violence in our Nation.

I’ve tried. I’ve really, really tried but I just can’t ignore this any longer.

Could someone, anyone, please tell me again why Chelsea Clinton is “headlining” any part of the inaugural activities?

This is an adult woman who has NEVER done or said anything remotely supportive of the President or First lady; Heck, she still hasn’t in all this time been able to muster or string together two kind words for the First daughters! Even the Bush girls have been unbelievably sweet to and publicly raved about the First daughters–

Chelsea Clinton? Not so much. Not at all.

There are actually people who actively supported, fundraised, campaigned and put themselves out there for the President and Mrs Obama, so someone please tell me again why Chelsea Clinton who did zilch – and who I can bet my bottom dollar DID NOT vote for President Obama, get to bump all these strong Obama supporters for anything at all – especially for a prime role that has her featured front and center – press statements, press releases and all!

Not only is this ridiculous and way out of line, but it is a gross disservice to actual supporters and a deliberate misrepresentation and blatant attempt at distorting for posterity and the history books – one that inserts and pretends that this very selfish, self-absorbed, petty, vindictive young woman who has no business being elevated especially at such a serious historic event for which she gave and did absolutely nothing – that she in some way participated in all of this, gave of herself in any way or played any part that resulted in her being propped up so prominently at the inaugural activities – and rewarded with such a plum role.

Five whole years and nothing. Not a peep from Chelsea Clinton – not even the mildest allusion to any of sort of support for the Obamas – And no, the other self-propping “round table” event she “headlined” at the DNC in North Carolina was NOT for or about re-electing President Obama.

But suddenly, just like that, she now wants to be associated with an Obama event?? Not a peep all these years and now she’s out there at the inaugural? Come on!

Actually I take that back- I have often felt and had this very strong sense that she was behind, wrote and still writes plenty of these nasty, snarky, rabidly anti-President and Mrs Obama – but enthusiastically pro-Hillary anonymous posts, littered all over the internet. I’d actually bet my bottom dollar on it!

I’ll never ever forget her snide expressions and gossipy whispers to the person sitting next to her all through, as Mrs Obama gave a speech at the Clinton global initiative 2 years ago. Not a very nice girl if you ask me.

To add insult to injury, her press release about this inaugural activity and “headlining” role from her press secretary – yes she has one of those LOL! – and a chief of staff too (can’t make this shit up!) – actually focuses entirely on her and her father’s foundation – Even with regard to an Obama event, still no mention of the President – NOTHING – she still can’t find ANYTHING at all to say about the guy whose inauguration she and her parents and their hangers-on are looking to exploit and hijack for their own purposes! NOTHING.

    What next?

The Clintons and their friends in the media screaming that the Obamas are “ungrateful”, aren’t being team players or good Democrats if they don’t get Malia and Sasha out of school to campaign and fly around the country canvassing for Hillary?!

You all know the drill by now “after everything the Clintons have done for him” refrain. That crap that makes so many of furious and has us still scratching our heads saying wait a damn minute!

It is President Obama who has done them the favor by elevating Hillary to Sec. of State when he absolutely didn’t have to and tremendously helped rehabilitate their reputation after 2008. But that truth doesn’t seem to fit the preferred narrative.

And please don’t laugh – The demand for every Obama including the two girls to be out on the campaign trail for Hillary or else, is not a farfetched concept.

The Clintons and those who surround them are really that ridiculous, self-absorbed, completely lacking in self-awareness and incredibly brazen.

But someone please tell me again who’s really running the entire inaugural affair this time around. Because apart from Myrlie Evers-Williams, James Taylor and Beyonce who actively supported and fundraised for the President, I really don’t get any of the other decisions and set up so far.

Unlike the first inaugural, this one feels so much less like the Obamas had much of an input.

    Kelly Clarkson? Seriously?! Really?? Why?
