    Obama Plans Executive Actions on Climate Change

    “President Barack Obama in next week’s State of the Union speech will lay out a renewed effort to combat climate change that is expected to include using his authority to curb emissions from existing power plants,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

    “The EPA has prepared rules for existing plants to minimize pollution from particulate matter, mercury and other toxins. But this would be the first time the agency regulates existing plants to curb emissions of the greenhouse gases scientists believe contribute to global warming.”

    Defining the ‘extremes’ in the immigration debate

    At the surface, there’s ample reason for optimism on comprehensive immigration reform. President Obama is investing considerable political capital into the issue; the public strongly supports the reform efforts; a bipartisan bill is already progressing in the Senate; and every Republican strategist and consultant is warning the party not to further alienate the fastest-growing voting constituency in the country.

    Even House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) recently declared, “This issue has been around far too long. A comprehensive approach is long overdue, and I’m confident that the president, myself, others can find the common ground to take care of this issue once and for all.”

    All House Republicans have to do now is be half-way reasonable and reform should become a reality. What could go wrong?

    That’s their (PL’s) new thing: American children cannot and should not be mourned by PBO because America is not also simultaneously mourning everyone else in the world while also treating PBO as if HE is the same as any mass shooter. Really, they argue that. They echo the rightwingers who claim Obama’s tears are “fake.” In the end, people like this expose their agendas so clearly that it’s obvious they don’t care about our children being killed, in Sandy Hook, on a street corner, or anywhere else in the world. Dead kids are just the backdrop of their small-minded attempts at ‘intellectual exercises’.

    Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William Howell (R) killed the Inauguration Day sneak attack by Senate Republicans who hoped to pass a massive mid-decade gerrymander. Howell ruled that the Senate’s amendment to a House bill making minor technical corrections to the House legislative maps were not germane, as it was a “vast rewrite” and would “stray dramatically” from the legislation’s original purpose.[....]

    The Senate passed the controversial maps on January 21 on a party-lines vote. The measure passed 20-19 because Senator Henry Marsh (D), a legendary civil rights leader, was absent attending President Obama’s inauguration.

    Do you know anything about Steve Deace? Simply put, he’s nuts. But he’s taking on Karl Rove in today’s Politico, which is noteworthy only because he’s far from alone in being highly displeased with Turdblossom.

    Karl Rove was once known as the “architect” but now a more appropriate nickname might be “demolition man.” Give Rove credit for one thing. He knows how to coalesce the conservative movement. He was the master strategist credited with getting the movement on one page to propel George W. Bush to eight years in the White House. But conservative dissatisfaction with Bush’s big government policies grew, and then eventually boiled over in the Obama years to what we now know as the tea party movement.
    Now Rove has succeeded in uniting the conservative grassroots yet again, but this time by becoming the face of the loathed Republican Party establishment. Rove’s prominent and annoying display on Fox News as the Republican ruling class’ mouthpiece and his new effort aimed at defeating the tea party makes him the point man for destroying the very conservative movement that made him a national name in politics in the first place.

    Though plenty of Republican pundits fared poorly in 2012, Dick Morris seemed to struggle more than most. You’ll recall that the Republican strategist guaranteed a Romney landslide, then later conceded he said things on the air he didn’t really believe as part of a larger partisan agenda. It wasn’t long after Election Day that even Fox News decided to bench him.

    That was two months ago. Now, Morris is a man without a network home.

    The Fox News Channel has declined to renew its contract with Dick Morris, a spokeswoman for the channel confirmed on Tuesday, three months after Mr. Morris was widely derided for predicting a landslide victory for Mitt Romney in the Nov. 6 presidential election.

    Media Matters published a related report today, highlighting Morris’ 15 years of “countless ethical violations, inaccurate electoral predictions, and offensive, false, and dishonest comments.”

    Proponents of repeal of the death penalty have picked up a potentially pivotal vote in the Senate with the decision of Sen. Ronald N. Young of Frederick County to support an end to executions in Maryland. In an interview last night, the previously undecided Young said he had made up his mind to vote for the bill backed by Gov. Martin O’Malley and to resist amendments aimed at thwarting full repeal.

    “It’s more costly to execute (murderers) than to keep them for life,” Young said. He added that prison officials have told him that lifers frequently turn into model prisoners because they depend on the privileges they accumulate.[....]

    In defense of the GOP’s “cosmetic” makeover

    Since November, a steady stream of Republicans have offered a “reform” agenda for the GOP. In speeches and interviews, up-and-coming Republicans like Marco Rubio, Bobby Jindal and Paul Ryan have urged the party to craft solutions and build new appeal to ordinary Americans.

    Of course, neither figure has proposed actual reform, or a departure from the arch-conservative policies that defined Mitt Romney’s bid for the presidency. With the possible exception of immigration, they’ve pushed new rhetoric for the same policies, in an attempt to navigate between real political constraints (the GOP base) and a real need for change.

    Yesterday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor joined the fray with a policy speech that presented existing GOP policies on education, immigration, and entitlements, but placed them under a new “make life easier” banner, as if it somehow made a difference.

    Arkansas senator now OK with just listening through your belly

    As the Arkansas legislature continues moving toward a ban on most abortions, the sponsor of the state Senate version says he is willing to drop that part about the vaginal probe. From the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette:

    An Arkansas senator proposing to ban most abortions in the state says he’s changing his bill to prohibit the procedure only if a fetal heartbeat is detected using an abdominal ultrasound.

    Senator Jason Rapert’s original legislation, passed by his chamber last week, would put abortion off-limits for most women before they even knew they were pregnant. You would have needed an ultrasound by vaginal probe in order to determine which very few women were eligible to exercise their constitutional rights. “Can you imagine what kind of feeling that would cause when inserted into a woman?” Democratic Senator Stephanie Flowers asked him last week during the debate. “No,” Rapert said.

    It turns out the state can still monitor a lot of pregnancies from the outside of your body, so Rapert’s going that route instead. Meanwhile, as you can see from the image, the senator who had been locally famous for his fiddling has become now famous in a whole new way as Fiddling Rapert. (H/t Arkansas Times.)

    Crossroads invites rivals, starts to backpedal

    We learned over the weekend the Karl Rove’s attack operation, American Crossroads, is launching a project called the Conservative Victory Project, intended to help discourage the Republican Party’s right-wing from nominating unelectable loons who lose general-election races.

    In particular, Crossroads president Steven Law noted his concerns about Iowa’s 2014 Senate race. “We’re concerned about Steve King’s Todd Akin problem,” Law said. “This is an example of candidate discipline and how it would play in a general election. All of the things he’s said are going to be hung around his neck.”

    Compare that to what Law told MSNBC’s Chuck Todd yesterday.

    For those who can’t watch clips online, Todd noted that Steve King managed to win re-election against a credible Democrat in 2012. “Sure,” Law said, after noting the money Crossroads has already invested in Tea Party candidates. “And we put $400,000 into that race, actually, in support of him this last go around.”

    Jed Lewison picked up on the shift: “A few days ago, Law was basically calling Steve King an unelectable nut job, saying that he was “concerned” about King because of ‘King’s Todd Akin problem’ and the fact that ‘all of the things he’s said are going to be hung around his neck.’ And now Law defends himself to conservatives by saying that his group actually spent $400,000 to try to elect King and refuses to repeat any of his pointed criticisms of King, instead saying he was trying to make a generic argument about how things a candidate has said or might say ought to be a factor in deciding who to support.”

    In the run-up to the 2012 election, I was attending meetings on voter protection. I’ve been doing voter protection in this county since 2006, so the Obama campaign and Ohio Democratic Party training sessions were a review and update for me (and for most of the other people in the room as well). At one of the last pre-election gatherings, however, there was a very young lawyer who spoke up and said he didn’t understand the written materials and he wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do in a real-life situation. A lawyer who had been a GOTV volunteer in Florida in the 2000 election came and spoke to us that day and his story was just chilling. He gets a call that something “hinky” is going on with balloting in Palm Beach County and then it all went to hell from there. The dramatic re-enactment of Bush versus Gore from the visitor may have been what alarmed the poorly-prepared Ohio lawyer.

    Anyway, an older man responded to the young lawyer’s concerns. He just looked at him and growled “blow the doors off and we won’t have to worry about any of this shit.” By “blow the doors off” he meant “turn out voters.” And that happened. I don’t know that we blew the doors off but Democrats turned out. It’s my belief that the coordinated GOP campaign to suppress Democratic voters DROVE turnout, to some extent. I have never seen such broad concern about voter suppression among “our” voters. I heard it everywhere I went. Concern wasn’t limited to those groups who have a history of being disenfranchised, as it has been in the past. I heard it from 65 year old white guys who have voted in the same precinct their entire adult lives. They were worried about it. That was new in 2012. We’ve always had a noisy, extremely litigious faction who care about voting rights, but we didn’t have broad buy-in, not here, anyway.

    Which brings me to this challenge to the VRA:

    Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc, fined $612 million for manipulating benchmark interest rates, plans to claw back three-quarters of the money from bonuses and awards already paid to the firm’s employees.

    Britain’s biggest publicly owned lender will pay $325 million to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, $150 million to the Department of Justice and $137 million to the U.K.’s Financial Services Authority, the CFTC said in a statement today. RBS said it will recoup about 300 million pounds from employees. The bank’s Japanese unit also agreed to plead guilty to wire fraud as part of the settlement.[....]

    Choosing the self-inflicted wound

    The U.S. economy shrank in the final three months of 2012, and we know exactly why: government spending cuts took capital out of the system and caused a slight contraction. Similarly, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office reported yesterday that economic growth will be weaker than it should be in 2013 because of “fiscal tightening,” including “scheduled automatic reductions in federal spending.”

    The conversation on Capitol Hill is so ridiculous, it no longer resembles reality in any meaningful way. Congressional Republicans insist they want to improve the strength of the recovery. How? By cutting spending that undermines the strength of the recovery.

    In related news, Republicans also believe no exercise and excessive eating is an effective weight-loss method.

    The dirty little secret is that the fiscal status quo is working quite well, at least insofar as it’s achieving its intended goals — policymakers have cut spending and raised revenue, which is supposed to reduce the deficit, and which is reducing the deficit. Indeed, the fiscal difficulties Republicans created during the Bush/Cheney era have been largely resolved, with deficits that are projected to keep shrinking and debt levels that are stabilizing.

    Brooklyn College stands behind BDS event as pressure from elected officials comes down hard

    A large group of New York state and city politicians from across the political spectrum have come down hard on a Brooklyn College event next week on the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement. One letter to Brooklyn College’s president from City Councilman Lew Fidler calls on the college to cancel the event or withdraw the school’s “official support” from the event. Another letter sent from a group of prominent progressive officials is calling on the Brooklyn College Political Science Department to rescind their sponsorship of the event.[....]

    [....] In an interview, a member of Brooklyn College’s Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) praised the administration. “The way they’ve been handling it shows the true leadership of [college president] Karen Gould. She’s upholding academic freedom, and on top of that they’re not succumbing to bullies like Alan Dershowitz and Dov Hikind,” said Carlos Guzman, an SJP member, who noted that groups like Jewish Voice for Peace and Jews Say No! were sponsoring the event.[....]

    [....] For SJP member Guzman, the fact that politicians are coming down so hard on the event speaks volumes.“It just shows how complicit our government is with the State of Israel and how they do not want the public to know how our tax dollars are used to fund the oppression of Palestinians.”

    Last week Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wrote a review of HBO’s “Girls” that was critical of the show’s characters and their priveldges. The show’s creator Lena Dunham says she was excited to hear the sports legend watched her show but it ends there.

    “I have to admit, I only skimmed it,” Dunham told E.com. “It seemed like a mixed review and I have a policy about not reading those.”

The clear-cutting of the rainforest helped make Indonesia the world’s fourth-biggest carbon emitter. And much of it was done in the name of paper — Asia Pulp & Paper, to be exact. But not anymore.

    Asia Pulp & Paper, the third-largest pulp and paper company in the world, announced Tuesday that it is halting operations in Indonesia’s natural rain forests, a victory for advocates who have been negotiating with the company for the past year. The Singapore-based company, which controls logging concessions spanning nearly 6.4 million acres in Indonesia, said it also has agreed to protect forested peatland, which stores massive amounts of carbon, and to work with indigenous communities to protect their native land.[....]

    New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is lashing out at a former White House doctor who said she worries about the governor dying in office because he is so heavy.

    Former White House physician Connie Mariano made the comment in an interview with CNN. The Scottsdale, Ariz., doctor says she’d like to see Christie run for president in 2016 but that he needs to lose weight. She worries he could have a heart attack or stroke.

    The 50-year-old Republican governor said Wednesday that unless Mariano gives him a physical exam and takes his family history, “she should shut up.”

    Writing about the ‘rabid’ hate aimed at Trayvon Martin seems only to generate more hate. The view that the unarmed 17-year-old killed by George Zimmerman nearly a year ago was a thug who deserved to die is as strong as ever.

    Many folks took issue with the picture I used yesterday and again today — that of a smiling, fresh-faced Trayvon wearing a red T-shirt from Hollister, the mass clothier of adolescence. Some think he’s as young as 11 years old or as old as 14 in that snapshot. Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump told me this afternoon that the slain teenager was 16 when that photo was taken in August 2011. Folks forget that, when he was killed, Trayvon had turned 17 just three weeks earlier. Trayvon would have been 18 years old yesterday. The most recent photo released by the family was of him on a horse wearing an orange T-shirt that was taken about a week before he was killed.

    But one reader sent me an e-mail last night that was beyond ridiculous. “Why didn’t you show the up-to-date picture of Trayvon Martin as below instead of the one where he is much younger?” he asked. “I don’t take either side because I just don’t know all the facts, but what I do know is you can’t beat honest reporting.” Below is the “up-to-date picture of Trayvon Martin” he attached.

    Levin Postpones Hagel Confirmation Vote

    Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI), who chairs the Senate Armed Services Committee, said on Wednesday he would be postponing a vote on the nomination of Chuck Hagel as the nation’s next secretary of defense.

    “The committee’s vote on Senator Hagel’s nomination has not been scheduled,” Levin said in a statement. “I had hoped to hold a vote on the nomination this week, but the committee’s review of the nomination is not yet complete. I intend to schedule a vote on the nomination as soon as possible.”

    The vote was expected as early as Thursday, but Republicans on the committee, including Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC), clamored for more information on groups or individuals that compensated Hagel for speeches he has given in the past.

        No, I’m on a “regular” laptop. But, I discovered if I open POU in a second window (keeping the first POU window open), the videos show up fine.

        It was happening on TOD also. TOD has a slammin’ page of Bob Marley tunes and I wanted to listen to a few. One of the regulars mentioned opening another page and it worked.

        Weird…

      You know, these anti-Obama outbursts and persistent “outrage” from the PL in their umpteenth act of looking for anything at all to burnish their mostly contrived and phony bona fides as “credible” anythings, is not only disrespectful and dangerous to the country, but at once puts the president, his wife and daughters at great personal risk.

      This bothers me beyond words.

      The fact is that this same crowd never did or will ever do anything to jeopardize the personal safety of Hillary Clinton, her husband or daughter who in their roles as SoS and president have been very much mired in the creation and support of the very subject of the latest PL outrage.

      But the PL have no qualms in their persistent attacks, vilification of and implication of President Obama in something they flippantly frame so negatively and has the very dangerous potential of even further putting not only his already threatened life in danger, but that of his wife and daughters by whipping up all this outrage, anger and hate that presents this as some idle, simplistic, fun sport on the President’s part.

      Do the Rachel Maddow’s, Ed’s of this world not realize that the rest of the world can hear and read them or do they have such little value for Michelle, Malia and Sasha Obama’s lives vis a vis Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s, that they do not care what damage and destruction their loud attempts at trying to be relevant, might wrought?!!
