The Problem With Saying ‘Black Babies Cost Less to Adopt’
Can you really put a price on a child’s life?
    STACIA L. BROWNJUL 1 2013, 3:28 PM ET

Every year, I teach writer Elna Baker’s essay, “Babies Buying Babies” to my freshman composition classes as an introduction to narrative and critical thinking. We listen to her This American Life recording and I watch the students cringe, chuckle, and scoff as she recounts her former job at FAO Schwartz, where white Upper East Side moms refused to buy certain dolls because of their skin color. In the end, as non-black minority dolls gradually begin to be “adopted,” Baker admits, “What were left were incubator upon incubator of black baby dolls.”

Class discussion is predictable. “It’s [insert year here]! I can’t believe we haven’t gotten past this!” Obama is often evoked as an arbiter of how much less racist these18-year-olds think the country is now than it was “back in the day.” Usually my goal, to remind students of the insidious ways in which racial prejudice impacts even the most innocuous of activities, is achieved. But last year, a black student raised her hand. “I don’t see that much wrong with this,” she shrugged. “My mom only bought me dolls that looked like me, too.” As other students nodded, I thought to myself, it’s time to reassess this lesson.

LOL I remember one Christmas Eve about 5 years ago there were no more white Cabbage Patch dolls left at Walmart. There were plenty of black Cabbage Patch dolls and all the white people who came in at the last minute to get a CP doll were left sad and dejected b/c the only CP dolls left were black………….and it was too late to run around to various stores to find a white doll. LOL!!

      • Aquagranny911

I have a funny story about CP dolls. The year they first came out, ’82 or ’83 I think it was. My girls all wanted one. There was an insanity & frenzy over the dolls that offended me & they were expensive for my budget. So I told the girls not to expect one under the tree. They were almost impossible to get where we were living then unless I wanted to take up mugging successful shoppers in mall parking lots.

Unknown to me, Mama went to Mexico & purchased three of them there. The girls were thrilled & so was I a bit because these dolls were ethnically Hispanic with subtly browner skin & dark hair & eyes.

        Youngest daughter came home indignant one day because another child told her;

“Your doll isn’t a real Cabbage Patch doll. She’s brown not pink & she has a funny name.”

This gave us one of those opportunities to have the Discussion (I’m sure you know the one I mean)

Anyway, I read somewhere that these dolls are big collectors items now because there were so few of them made. My daughters still have theirs, in fact their own children play with them.

I worked with a woman whose mother hadn’t looked carefully when buying her a “Barbie bighead” so on Chrristmas Day everyone was shocked when it was the black version. She said they all stopped for a minute and she shrugged and started combing there.

OK, I have to admit that I agree with some of the comments. This was a very strange article, or at minimum, very poorly written. There are a whole bunch of mixed messages.

The author compares the ‘left-over’ black dolls with lower adoption rates for black babies. She conflates newborn adoptions with foster care adoptions. It’s just a weird little article all the way around, in my opinion.

      • Aquagranny911

I agree that the article was really disjointed.

Sweeping NOPD reform strategy outlined in federal consent decree – Posted on June 24, 2013

Taking aim at a long history of civil rights abuses, corruption and slipshod oversight within the New Orleans Police Department, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu unfurled a bevy of sweeping reforms Tuesday afternoon in the nation’s most expansive consent decree to date.

The long-awaited agreement, to be overseen by an appointed monitor and U.S. District Judge Susie Morgan, amounts to a 492-point, court-enforced action plan for overhauling NOPD policies and practices — from when officers can pull their weapons to the kind of data they track.[….]

“Liberal” Mother Jones columnist Kevin Drum gets in touch with his inner teabagger and calls the POTUS a “Chicago Thug”.

But he meant it in a totally ironic hipster sort of way, so that makes it all bet…

No, fuck Kevin Drum’s racist carcass.

    – – —Visionary Inventor of Computer Mouse Dead – – —

    — —Doug Engelbart, the inventor of the computer mouse and developer of early incarnations of email, word processing programs, and the Internet, has died at the age of 88. Back in the 1950s and `60s, when mainframes took up entire rooms and were fed data on punch cards, Engelbart already was envisioning a world in which people used computers to share ideas about solving problems. He said his work was all about “augmenting human intellect,” but it boiled down to making computers user-friendly. One of the biggest advances was the mouse, which he developed in the 1960s and patented in 1970. At the time, it was a wooden shell covering two metal wheels: an “X-Y position indicator for a display system.”
