Wednesday Evening Thread: Mitt the Stiff attempts relating to the people

My God, its just brutal watching him.

As part of his attempt to appear more relateable, presumed GOP nominee Mitt Romney sat with a handful of regular, working Americans in Pennsylvania today to discuss their plight in the struggling economy. But the Romney campaign may not have vetted the attendees to make sure they were sufficiently anti-tax before giving them access to the candidate and his picnic table full of lemonade and pretzels. (h/t Think Progress)

Mitt’s body language says it all.

And President Obama’s body language says it all as well – pics of PBO at backyard chats:

Alright, this is it for the night…back to my self-imposed internet exile.

Obama: ‘I Wasn’t Born With A Silver Spoon In My Mouth’

In a speech on the economy and opportunity at an Ohio community college, President Obama said, “I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth.”

“Somebody gave me an education. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth. Michelle wasn’t. Somebody gave us a chance. Just like these folks up here are looking for a chance.”

    .

Hmm, this has the added benefit of being a dig and being absolutely true as well… I wonder who the dig could possibly be at???

ALEC Sends Out an SOS to Breitbart Bloggers

Shortly after issuing a press release announcing that it was disbanding its “Public Safety and Elections Task Force” after 30 years, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) held a training for the right-wing blogosphere.
ALEC Director of External Relations Caitlyn Korb spoke yesterday at a Heritage Foundation “Bloggers Briefing,” begging conservative bloggers for help while prepping “a very aggressive campaign to really spread the word about what we actually do.” Korb appears to be a new ALEC employee who recently worked for the Cato Institute. Both ALEC and Cato have received funding from Koch family foundations. The Heritage Foundation is an ALEC member.

ALEC is definitely running scared. Ol’ Rupert Murdoch’s WSJ is getting in the mix with this bs op-ed:

      Shutting Down ALEC
Playing the race card to silence a free-market policy voice.

Is it suddenly disreputable to advocate free-market policies? That’s the question raised by a remarkable political assault on the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), which promotes reform in the 50 states. Led by former White House aide Van Jones, various left-wing activists and media are bullying big business to cut off ALEC’s funding. So much for free and open debate.

Founded in 1973, ALEC is a group of state lawmakers who meet to share and spread conservative policy ideas. ALEC’s main focus is fiscal and economic policy, notably at the moment pension and lawsuit reform, tax and spending limitation, and school choice. For years it labored in obscurity, its influence rising or falling with the public mood. But after conservatives made record gains in state legislatures in 2010, the left began to target ALEC for destruction.

I want to know what Color of Change said to the ALEC folks, b/c listening to Michele Martin on NPR, one of their guys came on and basically said they nicely asked ALEC sponsors to drop them or else and most decided to drop them. Color of change must know where the bodies are buried

          • Miranda

I think what made many of those companies drop ALEC was Trayvon Martin’s face. Supporting the group that created the basis for SYG laws vs the face of the consequence for SYG laws.

  • GOVCHRIS1988

HO-LY SHIT!!!!!! Ok, fuck the polls, newsmedia pundits, everyone etc. Look at Mitt. This reminds me of the debate between Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush and H. Ross Perot. I mean, my God if he checked his watch, I wouldn’t be surprised. He is bad at voter outreach. He never really did this in Massachusetts, and you can tell. Which is why I am so happy that Barack Obama has rallies and town hall meetings with throngs of people. He really is in tune with people and has a sense of knowing a persons problems. Mitt Romney doesn’t have that and judging by his past campaigns, Mitt Romney CANNOT learn that.

This is why polls and bullshit media punditry be damned, Mitt Romney is not going to get elected President of the United States. I just don’t see it. I saw it a little with John McCain……up until he chose Moosewoman as his VP. I saw it with GW Bush even. He played dumb hick you could relate to really well, rich lifestyle be damned. Reagan possessed it with his acting chops, Clinton possessed it well and when his ego is tempered, still can utilize it. Come on, can any of you name one President in the last thirty years that had that personality as witnessed above? Can you name a President that was either defeated or a presidential challenger defeated that was as compassionate, attentive, and dynamic as Barack Obama? Me neither.

I just don’t see Mitt Romney winning. I’m saying this not as a partisan voter, but as a viewer of sorts. There is no story about him which makes people say, “He’s my choice.” He grew up in a rich, political family. He never lived really on his own without any aid from his parents. He never had to worry about unpaid bills or whether his kids would be able to go to the best schools or whether he would have a job. He never worried about whether or not the next paycheck would be in or whether or not he could feed his family. None of that. The one signature accomplishment from his years as governor of Massachusetts he can’t use because his opponent has already passed an almost carbon copy of it nationally while his own party wants to get rid of it. His only job has been at Bain, where he decimated the lives of many while fattening the pockets of his shareholders as well as himself. There is just no story.

He has no purpose or rallying cry aside from, “You guys hate him, so do I so vote for me.” There is absolutely NOTHING! No one can tell us why he should be President. No damn one. Really, I don’t even think he knows. I don’t want people to think that I am being cocky, complacent or unknowing of the challenges and obstacles set upon us that lie ahead, but just look at that video above and tell me, Why is he their nominee and why would we want him as President of the United States? Because right now, I really don’t see it.

    • GN

No one can tell us why he should be President. No damn one.

“It’s our turn.” Ann Romney, April 2012

    • Rhoda

He’s white. The backlash of the first black POTUS led to the tea party seeking to take back the country and part of the reason democrats lost in 2010. We will see if white men are enough to win the presidency.

      • aleth

        He is counting on that

    • Aquagranny911

      THIS!

No way can you fake charm, genuine caring or interest in people. I don’t know if it is Romney’s privileged life, being raised in Mormon isolationism or if he has some form of Aspergers Syndrome but he can’t relate to people & he is stiff, uncomfortable & oblivious to social cues in unstructured situations.

Sometimes it is painful to watch & if he wasn’t such a lying sack of caca I might feel just a tiny bit sorry for him. I wish he would just go get “LOSER” tattooed on his forehead & we could be done with it all.

And as long as Mitt Romney insists on mimicking and ripping off every single one of President Obama’s natural and authentic moves and expired and tossed out playbook from 2008, Romney will continue to flail and look exactly like the silly, empty narcissistic fool he actually is.

This person Mitt Romney, with his substantial wealth, who has been doing absolutely nothing else but run for president since 2006, has still not been able to come up with a focused, cohesive plan, structure and style that is uniquely his—-and has to embarrassingly wing it and rely solely on President Obama not just for cues, but his entire strategy — that should give every American pause.

The man has no clue and no plan besides being motivated by envy and greed. He begrudges President Obama the perks of the job.

Romney is petty, envious, sad sack and only further showed his titled clenched, desperate for a colonic butt when he bitched and whined about President Obama” flying about in Air Force One, surrounded by admiring believers..”

What a small, small, anal retentive asshole Romney is.

So desperate to fly on Air force one, be the first Mormon president and wipe out the middle class while sweetening the pot for his sponsors and benefactors.

I won’t be surprised if Romney has signed a promise to the Republican establishment that he’ll do just one term, if they’ll get him elected.

The man is that desperate and that hollow—it’s all about him and his shallow desires that have absolutely nothing to do with the American people or the hard work of being President —

      Pathetic!

      • rikyrah

        BRAVO BRAVO BRAVO.

Willard Romney is a human cipher with NO CORE.

The ONLY true belief that he has is….

that HE should be President of the United States.

        JUST BECAUSE.

        that’s it.

        nothing else.

To run for President means that you are an ambitious person, but here’s the thing.

IF AMBITION IS ALL THERE IS?

then, you are the LAST person that should be President.

He won the GOP Primary, NOT by making a case as to why he should be President.

But, by moneybombing his opponents, who were nothing but a bunch of grifters and amateurs.

He won’t be able to moneybomb the President.

Mainly because his ass can’t come up with anything new that hasn’t been said by the GOP over the course of the past 3+ years.

        Been there. Done that.

So, the only ones his ads will work on are the clowns who would vote for the Devil himself if he was running against President Obama.

      • Heads-on-right-in-Cali

Pure poetry Camille, my sentiments exactly. Romney is not of this world, literally. So sad their hatred and jealousy of a brilliant man of color, has caused them to leap head first into insanity. They have chosen a candidate that cannot possible win.

    • rikyrah

I just don’t see Mitt Romney winning. I’m saying this not as a partisan voter, but as a viewer of sorts. There is no story about him which makes people say, “He’s my choice.” He grew up in a rich, political family. He never lived really on his own without any aid from his parents. He never had to worry about unpaid bills or whether his kids would be able to go to the best schools or whether he would have a job. He never worried about whether or not the next paycheck would be in or whether or not he could feed his family. None of that.

      I’ve said this for awhile.

      HE HAS NO NARRATIVE.

EVERY President has a narrative and something that you can relate to.

Barack Obama is a self-made man.

George W. Bush was the man who knew he did wrong, found Jesus and got redemption. (I never believed it, but it was there, and it humanized him)

Clinton was the boy from Hope.

George H.W. Bush was the insider, but one who lied to get into the Army during WWII and risked his life for his country.

Ronald Reagan was the man from a small town in Illinois, who went to Hollywood, became an actor, then a politician.

Jimmy Carter was military man and a peanut farmer from Plains.

and so on and so on.

      There is SOMETHING.

There has to be SOMETHING in a candidate’s background that you have to be able to attach yourself to emotionally,

      What does Willard have?

      NONE.

      He has no narrative.

There is absolutely nothing in his story that an average American can point to and say, ‘ Mitt Romney knows me’.

I’ll point it out today – THOSE WERE REPUBLICAN VOTERS sitting at that table. Those weren’t Democrats.

And, he had no more in common with them than I do with the Grand Wizard of the KKK.

      • JojoRaze

A-MEN!!! That’s it. He has no story to tell that shows him as a “man-of-the-people” because he isn’t. If Mitt’s father ran for public office today, you could vote for him because he was a self-made man who made good and he could relate well with all people, since he had rebuked the Repubs for their racism. Mitt doesn’t have that at all. Barack has “mother from Kansas, dad from Kenya.” You can tell PBO had to eat tuna, had hole in his shoes, drove a crappy car and just knows what it’s like to skuffle. Mitt doesn’t have that and can’t fake it.

Even with Dubya, you could tell that he got it, or could sell that he got it. He ran on “compassionate conservativism.” There was an awareness that conservatism by itself was heartless and cruel, and he was the man to make it more empathetic.
I remember reading a NY Times article about why W was supportive of comprehensive immigration reform, it was because the domestics they had at his homes as a kid showed him that Latinos were not the brown enemy, but hardworking people. Dubya and the last four presidents could at least fake sympathy for others, but Mittens is congenitally unable to.

    Romney comments spark ‘CookieGate’ special

The small town stir began Tuesday at a community center event when Romney paused to take note of the desserts while sitting down at a picnic table.

“I’m not sure about these cookies. They don’t look like you made them,” Romney said to the woman sitting next to him “No, no. They came from the local 7-eleven, bakery, or whatever.”

The comments quickly spread on Twitter, with some pointing to the remarks as an example of Romney being out of touch to the point of confusing 7-11 with a bakery.

This is a statute that has had bipartisan support over the years and it is inconceivable to me now that we are in the process of a debate about something that has proven so effective and is clearly so needed for the future. It must be passed, and it must be passed soon. -Attorney General Eric Holder

It’s not clear from this excerpt, and the media has barely, if at all, covered why the Republicans are still blocking the renewal of the Violence Against Women Act, so allow me to explain.

They’re blocking it because the new version of the bill grants existing protections to members of the LGBT community, immigrants, and Native American tribes. Vulnerable minorities that should have been protected long ago.

Swear to God, we need a Harriet right now.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

That’s funny because this Roll Call article tells a different tale:

During the past few months, however, the Obama organization, whether in the White House or on the campaign trail, has made key hires that Members believe will help outreach.

Chief among them is Broderick Johnson, whom Obama tapped late last month to serve as a senior adviser to the campaign.

“They will not tell you it’s for the purpose of talking to the CBC/African-American constituencies,” said the CBC staffer, “but everybody who knows the process knows he was hired … to be the senior person for the African-American community.

“That’s a positive step forward,” the staffer continued. “He’s a known commodity, at least in the D.C. African-American community.”

Other hires have helped. In mid-August, former CBC aide Nicole Isaac moved from Vice President Joseph Biden’s legislative affairs team to that of the president’s.

In September, the administration hired Jewel James, former director of Massachusetts Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick’s office in Washington, D.C., as deputy director of intergovernmental affairs. James is also a former aide to several CBC members.

The campaign also hired Butterfield’s daughter, Valeisha Butterfield-Jones, as its national youth vote director in the Chicago campaign office.

President Obama’s body language says it all as well. It’s interesting that you leave out the one photo showing the President smiling as he strangles one of his supporters.

Reporting On Nugent Comments, CNN Backs Away From Identifying Dana Loesch’s CNN Role

Today, CNN highlighted comments National Rifle Association board member and Washington Times columnist Ted Nugent made on Dana Loesch’s radio show but repeatedly avoided telling viewers that Loesch is a paid CNN contributor. Nugent appeared on Loesch’s show yesterday to defend his inflammatory comments about the Obama administration, saying he stood by his remarks at the NRA and that his message had been “100 percent positive.”

    – – – -War on Women #satire- – –

    – — -As the gender gap threatened to undermine their crusade for a one-term Obama, the GOP turned to Twitter to un-sink the Titanic. Don’t worry your pretty little heads about our party’s mandated transvaginal rapes and birth control bans, a host of Republicans shrieked. It is President Obama who is waging the war against women by sentencing two of them to life…on the Supreme Court.

FullofMitt: There’s no war on women coming from me. I’m so committed to protecting equality that I promise to lock Lilly Ledbetter in an airtight kennel. #TheDogLovedThat

JohnMcMaverick: War, you say? Well, we must bomb Womanistan before they force us to swallow their nuclear pill. #AlsoBombSyria #AndIran #AndCanada

ReinceStag: Who cares what the marketplace pays women? I need my wife to stay home to wage war on all these damn caterpillars clogging up my tax loopholes. #1%TopRateForThe1%

GovNikki: Women don’t care about birth control. They care about the rising cost of a decent mani-pedi & a vacuum that doesn’t lose suction.

Limpbaugh: Quit having so much sex! Or else send me your sex tapes. See, we stand for choice even more than them. #SoMuchViagraSoLittleCatholicBabePorn

Good night guys. I pretty much ignored most political news and just watched videos, read 3 E-books.

I saw this preview on you tube and was strangely creeped out and attracted at the same time to “David”, doesn’t hurt that I find Michael Fassbender (“sharky” to his fans…I luv this tumblr: Is Michael Fassbender a shark? ) EXTREMELY sexy!

I still have no idea what the heck Prometheus is about, but it has Idris Elba and Michael Fassbender, I’m already sold!

Happy Birthday David (NEW Prometheus Viral!)

    – – – -CNN’s Don Lemon Gives Mitt Romney A Pass On Ted Nugent ‘Dead Or In Jail’ Remarks- —

—- – -As the Secret Service looks into potentially threatening comments by musician and gun rights icon Ted Nugent, pressure has been building for Republican candidate Mitt Romney to reject the endorsement his campaign now claims they “never solicited,” and denounce Nugent’s remarks. During a CNN “Buzzer Beater” segment this afternoon, anchor Don Lemon did his level best to let Romney off the hook.

The three panelists in the “Buzzer Beater” segment gave the predictable mix of opinions (one compared Nugent to Bill Maher, but last time I looked, calling someone a c*nt during a stand-up routine wasn’t grounds for a Secret Service inquiry) but it was Lemon’s attitude toward the controversy that was noteworthy. He set up the segment by playing a clip of Nugent’s remarks, which included his assertion that “If Barack Obama becomes the president in November again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year.”

    – – –Lemon tossed the issue to his panel with the leading question “Does Mitt Romney have to come out and say…He doesn’t really have to address this, does he?”

Setting aside the ridiculous double-standard embedded in that statement (President Obama’s entire 2008 campaign was derailed by media obsession with a supporter’s remarks), Romney has a responsibility to respond because even if he didn’t “solicit” the endorsement (and as the Secret Service is learning now, it’s often better to seek something than to solicit it), he did make a promise in order to secure it, and cheerfully accepted it. But even if he hadn’t, even if Nugent had endorsed no one, decency would demand a response, as Lemon’s next question unintentionally demonstrates.

    – – -Later in the segment, he laughingly asked “Why would anyone with a brain even pay attention to something that Ted Nugent said? wouldn’t you just be like whatever?”

Don Lemon has long been such a fucking running joke.

How he even still shows his face in public or looks in that camera with a straight face, is a complete mystery.

Don is such a weak-ass with such an inferiority complex and is so eager to please to keep his vanity spot at the FOX affiliate CNN, he’ll do anything. Anything at all.

And if in the process his sorry ass even gets slightly acknowledged by the various assortment of anti-President Obama folks he’s so eager to impress—PL’s, Jon Stewart, sole patrol etc, why, it will all have been worth making a complete ass of himself while setting back black folks.

Don Lemon will permanently don a pink tutu and spew expletives at his mother daily on t.v, declare MLK an anti-white racist if that guarantees he keeps his worthless spot at cNN.
