A Newspaper Publishes Names of Gun Permit Holders, Prompting Outrage

A newspaper’s interactive map listing the names and addresses of gun permit holders in two New York counties has drawn a gathering avalanche of outrage this week.

As word spread across social media, thousands left comments expressing disbelief and anger at the map, compiled from publicly available information on handgun permit holders in Westchester and Rockland Counties and published online over the weekend by The Journal News, a newspaper based in White Plains and owned by the Gannett Company.

David Koch Now Taking Aim at Hurricane Sandy Victims

Koch’s top deputy in New Jersey, a surly gentleman named Steve Lonegan, who heads the local AFP state chapter, called the aid package a “disgrace.” “This is not a federal government responsibility,” Lonegan told reporters. “We need to suck it up and be responsible for taking care of ourselves.”

    – —Marva Whitney (James Brown’s Soul Sister #1) Dies at 68– —

——*Marva Whitney, a fiery voiced funk singer who toured and collaborated with James Brown — along the way earning the nickname “Soul Sister #1″ — died on Saturday at age 68, according to a Facebook page dedicated to her.

“She left us with a legacy that will shine forever,” the message reads.

A cause of death is not immediately known, however it is being reported that Whitney died from complications of pneumonia.

–Whitney is best known for her version of “It’s My Thing,” which cracked the Hot 100 in 1969, and for the widely sampled track “Unwind Yourself,” which can be heard on songs by The 45 Kings, DJ Kool and Mac Miller, among others. [Listen to both below.]

    – – –Celebs Who Personify Kwanzaa’s 7 Principles– – –

    — —(The Root) — Founded in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, an Africana-studies scholar, Kwanzaa is a weeklong celebration — lasting from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 — meant to commemorate the African heritage of black Americans. Each day of the celebration is devoted to one of seven principles. This year The Root decided to take the holiday’s seven principles and pick one or two prominent African Americans who best embody each one.

Below, check out our picks for the most Kwanzaa-fied celebrities.

    – —- — — To strive for and to maintain unity in the family, community, nation and race.

Although Obama is seen by his supporters as a unifier, one need only look at the exit polls from the Nov. 6 election to see that the nation is hardly united. But there are times when Obama is called upon as president to unify communities and an entire nation, times when politics and partisanship are completely set aside. After the Newtown, Conn., tragedy, it was his duty to travel to the town to console victims, speak to residents and calm a scared nation.

    — —Hawaii Lt. Gov. Schatz named to Inouye’s seat – —

    – – —Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie (D) chose Hawaii Lieutenant Gov. Brian Schatz (D) to fill the seat left open by the death of longtime Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), deciding against Inouye’s deathbed wish that Rep. Colleen Hanabusa (D-Hawaii) succeed him.

The move comes as a surprise — most expected Abercrombie to honor Inouye’s wish, delivered in a letter to the governor on the day of his death earlier this month. Abercrombie chose Schatz over Hanabusa and former congressional candidate Esther Kia’aina (D), the options presented to him by the state Democratic committee.

He said that Inouye’s wishes had been “taken into account fully” but that “no one and nothing was preordained” and he wanted to make sure to act in the best interests of the state, especially in helping Hawaii’s suddenly youthful congressional delegation build up seniority in Congress as quickly as possible.

Abercrombie’s move could trigger some backlash within the party, possibly resulting in a primary challenge for either him or Schatz. Both will face the voters in 2014.

Abercrombie said Schatz is “intelligent, forceful, insightful, experienced and committed” but also heaped praise on Hanabusa, and said one of the reasons he didn’t choose her was because of her highly prized seat on the House Armed Services Committee.

He also said that both she and Kia’aina had “offered their support for Brian” and said the state party was “united,” downplaying concerns about a possible rift.

    Anyone with – –da 411???- —

      Scott Conroy @RealClearScott

If Abercrombie had appointed Hanabusa, Dems would’ve had a very tough race to keep her House seat. Schatz not a total shock.

Supreme Court declines to block provision covering contraceptives in health care law
By Pete Williams, NBC News justice correspondent

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Supreme Court declined Wednesday to put a temporary hold on a controversial provision in the new health care law requiring employers to provide health insurance coverage for contraceptives.

Two businesses challenging the act — the nationwide chain of 500 Hobby Lobby Stores and Mardel, a chain of Christian bookstores — contended that the law violates their religious freedom. Their legal battle is continuing over the merits of their claim. In the meantime, they asked the US Supreme Court to put a temporary hold on the law, which takes effect January 1, 2013.

On Wednesday, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who handles emergency appeals from the courts where the companies are based, declined to grant an injunction.

Black voter turnout may have surpassed whites for the first time

Despite often-voiced concerns about the effect of voter identification laws, black voter turnout remained high in 2012 and, for the first time, may have topped the rate for whites, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center.

Four years ago, the rate of black voter turnout almost equaled that of whites, continuing a trend of a steady increase in black turnout rates that began in 1996. This year, with white turnout appearing to have dropped, black turnout seems very likely to have exceeded the white level, although definitive figures won’t be available until the Census Bureau reports in a few months.

A higher turnout rate among blacks than whites would mark an historic milestone given America’s long history of disenfranchising blacks. Blacks were effectively barred from polls in many states until after passage of the federal Voting Rights Act in 1965.

Read another “Not Enough ‘Angry White Guys’ to Sustain GOP” post-mortem analysis titled “the disappearing independent voter”. Interestingly, Mitt Romney is said to have decisively won the independent vote. My take away? “Disappearing” simply means the once highly valued independent voter no longer decide elections. Let’s hope the “undecided voter” follows. The fact that the Black voter turnout is still high although they are likely over represented in the pools of missing, provisional and spoiled ballots explains all the post-election analysis.

      • JojoRaze

Seems to me the white people who didn’t vote really couldn’t stand Mitt Romney and decided keeping the Negro, who’s wife and daughters they didn’t hate, was better than putting in a phony like Mittens. Mittens didn’t have any stans. PBO has them in spades.

    – – –It’s that time of year folks — when we like to reflect on the triumphs and tragedies of the year as it comes to a close.

No will forget the icons we lost, the stories that shaped our world and the landmarks in politics, the arts and culture from 2012.

But of course, with almost every narrative there is a seedy underbelly. We must not forget the figures which made the past year most unpleasant, even though we’d like to.

So without further ado, please check out our slideshow of the famous faces we’d like a reprieve from seeing in the new year, although something tells us we won’t be so lucky. – – [-BWAHAHA]
