I wouldn’t be surprised all those supposedly misplaced & stolen military personal records the last few years was connected to Manning.

Hmmm. I hadn’t thought of that, Alma. Good point.

Among the 254 counties where food stamp recipients doubled between 2007 and 2011, Republican Mitt Romney won 213 of them in last year’s presidential election, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data compiled by Bloomberg.Kentucky’s Owsley County, which backed Romney with 81 percent of its vote, has the largest proportion of food stamp recipients among those that he carried.

I cannot feel sorry for people willing to slash their own wrists like this.

      • Alma98

Yep, you reap what you sow and faux news is not gonna tell the truth PBO will be blamed for it.

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

Romney would have cut food stamps so fast these people wouldn’t have known what hit them. Oh no he wasn’t talking about them when he said 47%. That’s them other people.

As long as they can keep holding on to their fears Red State America could care less that the people they elect are trying to push them back to the year 1622. They hate PBO but he’s the only thing standing between them and economic oblivion.

Conservatives to Sen. Alexander: Time to Retire
    By Corey Boles

A group of tea-party and conservative organizations urged Sen. Lamar Alexander(R., Tenn.) to retire rather than seek a third term next year, signaling that tea-party activists have zeroed in on a new target as they try to pressure incumbent Republicans from the right.

In an open letter published Wednesday, 20 groups based in the state attacked Mr. Alexander, saying the country “can no longer afford compromise and bipartisanship, two traits for which you have become famous.”

The split within the GOP around here is a beautiful thing. Quite helpful. LOL

        • gn

So true; I think they’re split everywhere along racists/non-racists; extremists/moderates lines. Remarkable because the GOP is known for walking in lockstep and being hesitant to expose internal divisions.

          • Alma98

            It’s all good for us.

      • BoomerGal

        Lets hope they succeed.

    • Kennymack1971

The GOP can delay it all it wants but a reckoning has arrived and they’re either going to shut down the racists, birthers and the rest of the RW wackaloons or they’re going to let them send them the way of the Whigs…their choice.

      LOL

    • JojoRaze

I’m coming to find out that back in the day, everybody covered their couches in plastic. It was only the WASPs twho were rich that didn’t. Anybody who was lower-middle class who could get some furniture wasn’t gonna risk it getting it jacked up when furniture was expensive. Wasn’t no IKEA then. you bet your bottom dollar Mrs Goldschein who saved her money from working in the garment district to buy her living room set was covering her joint with plastic as well as Mrs. Vitoli and Mrs Jackson who worked with in her the garment factory.

      • Alma98

I know, we had plastic, my mother took it off when we got older and told us to stay off. And we did because we knew what would happen if we didn’t. lol

      • MsKitty

My Mom had plastic slipcovers. Two vivid memories:

        1. On hot days the plastic would stick to you and it felt like being wrapped in scotch tape.

        2. When the seams and borders would inevitably wear out and crack, the pinching and scratching on your skin was torture.

        Ugh.

    • qosine

      PoliticalTicker lives for this. Ugh

    • Miranda

Love, who left the White House at the end of 2011 to complete his MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, also recalled the moment when the president “finally” found his birth certificate.

The moderator jumped in: “It took a little too long, by the way.”

Explaining the delay, Love said when “your parents don’t live together (and) you travel all over the world, documents get lost.”

“He wanted to just have an impromptu press conference, just walk in to the press briefing room in the White House and put it down on the podium. And everyone was like ‘That’s a really bad idea’,” Love said, drawing laughs from the audience.

      ———————————
So the moderator is a birther – and damn don’t I wish PBO had just walked in the briefing room and slammed that birth certificate down and walked right back out!!

      • gn

That’s what I just like, “huh”? What is the purpose of this article period other than throwing shade re: bin Laden and also legitimizing the racist birther movement?

        • crazycanuck

Bin Laden is dead and the repugs had nothing to do with it, end of story, two terms, wallow in it

        • qosine

          How perfectly reasonable.

“Explaining the delay, Love said when ‘your parents don’t live together (and) you travel all over the world, documents get lost.'”

I’d love to have seen PBO do that!

        • jziglar

Also “why did it take so long” ? He already released it and he doesn’t have to entertain white racists who hate him. There were numerous facts that debunked the birthers including former republican governor Linda Lingle.

And they can’t get over the fact that President Obama took out the man W Bush couldn’t and refused to get.

          • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

I didn’t understand that question either.

        • AxelFoley

Notice how they’re starting that birther shit up again in the media. I heard that supposedly, when Congress gets back from recess, the GOP is gonna bring up impeachment charges because PBO “wasn’t born in the U.S.”

          Bring. That fucking. Shit. On.

        • conlakappa

How many people would be able to get their hands quickly on their birth certificates? Yes, if you’re doing it like you are supposed to, it’s safely in a strongbox somewhere but if you move, it’s a question of where that box is.

    – –Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY), a tea party senator with a long history of opposition to civil rights laws, told an audience in Louisville, Kentucky on Wednesday that there is no evidence of black voters being excluded from the franchise. According to local NPR host Phillip Bailey, Paul said that he does not believe “there is any particular evidence of polls barring African Americans from voting,” during a speech to the non-partisan Louisville Forum.

    — –[NOW ---SOME FACTS]: –

If Paul is not aware of the evidence indicating widespread efforts to prevent African Americans from voting, then he must not be looking very hard. During the 2012 election, black and Hispanic voters waited nearly twice as long to cast a ballot as white voters. In Florida, lines of up to six hours led an estimated 201,000 people to become frustrated and leave the polls. These lines existed largely because of a voter suppression bill signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) which reduced early voting hours in the state. After the election, top Republicans admitted that the purpose of cutting early voting was to reduce Democratic turnout. One Republican operative conceded that early voting was cut on the Sunday proceeding Election Day because “that’s a big day when the black churches organize themselves.”
Meanwhile, voter ID laws are rampant in states led by conservatives, despite the fact that these laws cannot be justified by any legitimate purpose.

Obama pushes ambitious Internet access plan for schools
By Zachary A. Goldfarb, Published: August 13

President Obama liked the idea laid out in a memo from his staff: an
ambitious plan to expand high-speed Internet access in schools that
would allow students to use digital notebooks and teachers to customize
lessons like never before. Better yet, the president would not need
    Congress to approve it.

White House senior advisers have described the little-known proposal, announced earlier this summer under the name ConnectEd, as one of the biggest potential achievements of Obama’s second term.

There’s just one catch: The effort would cost billions of dollars, and
Obama wants to pay for it by raising fees for mobile-phone users. Doing
that relies on the Federal Communications Commission, an independent
agency that has the power to approve or reject the plan.

    MORE: http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/obama-pushes-ambitious-internet-access-plan/2013/08/13/646bf410-f321-11e2-bdae-0d1f78989e8a_story.html?tid=pm_politics_pop

    • Joy

I would love to see this implemented, especially for those rural school kids who have to use antiquated learning materials. But man, I wish they would tax internet and mobile providers instead. Taxes and fees already bump both my services up by $15-$20 bucks.

      • TyrenM

Feeling this. That would at least be 5 on it well spent.

  • jziglar

I was reading an article in the Washington Post about Obama’s vacation, going to nice restaurants, golf courses, golfing with friends and high profile people like Vernon Jordan, The CEO of Comcast, Richard Wolf a financier, the head of the World Bank, etc. And while I was looking at the photos I realized that the real reason why they talk about their trips in a negative way is because they did all the right things to get to the top while being black. They’re comfortable in their own skin and they choose who they want to associate with. The beltway crowd are angry because they could care less about Sally Quinn’s cocktail parties, which is why we hear the constant “Obama is cold and aloof” BS. They can’t stand to see a black man in a position of Power and influence.

    • itgurl_29

And they can’t stand that the Obamas love to be around other black folk. Believe me, if all they were hanging out with were white folks, half of the criticism about how they socialize would disappear. No, they like being around other black folk. And they can’t stand that those black folk they hang around are also extremely successful! None of them give a damn about what some white folks are doing. They don’t freakin’ matter and they just can’t believe these negros are not sitting around all day dreaming of going to their white cocktail parties. LOL!

      • jziglar

Congressman who Attacked ‘Fit’ Couple on Food Stamps Took $370,000 In Stimulus- —

    – — – -Congressman Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) who blasted a “physically fit” couple for using food stamps at a suburban Virginia grocery store, collected 370,000 dollars in federal stimulus money for his Oklahoma plumbing company. Mullin who brags about turning the plumbing company into a successful business never mentions the government help he received to make it thrive. Or if he did not need the money to prop up his plumbing firm, he never mentions that his business was “physically fit” and that he did not actually need stimulus money to keep it afloat.

Mullin has become a text book case in Republican hypocrisy. He attacks food stamp recipients for collecting a couple hundred dollars a month in assistance needed to eat, but says no word about collecting 370,000 dollars in federal assistance to install toilets and lay pipes. To be fair, the projects that the stimulus money funded, which included building affordable housing in Northeast Oklahoma, are probably worthy projects. The problem is that Mullin is so quick to judge others for using federal money and that he espouses vehement anti-government rhetoric while he pockets federal money.

North Carolina’s Attack on Voting Rights
by Jamelle Bouie Aug 13, 2013 3:30 PM EDT
A new law rushed through by North Carolina Republicans contains a laundry list of measures brazenly designed to target Democratic voters. Jamelle Bouie on the bill so extreme Hillary Clinton is getting involved.

    ………………..

The centerpiece of the law is a strict new mandate for voter identification, that’s more notable for what it bans than what it permits. Of the various forms of state-issued ID, only four are valid for voting: driver’s licenses, passports, veteran’s IDs, and tribal cards. Everything else is unacceptable. This includes college IDs, public or municipal employee IDs, ID from public-assistance agencies, and out-of-state driver’s licenses.

It’s no accident that those are the excluded categories. As with similar laws in other states, the restrictions target Democratic voters, from students and young people—who are more likely to rely on university-issued identification—to public employees and the poor. And of course, a large share of these voters are black and Latino. Overall, the state estimates that as many as 318,000 voters could lack (PDF) appropriate identification.

Echoing many supporters of voter identification, Governor McCrory points to other activities that require photo ID: “Common practices like boarding an airplane and purchasing Sudafed require photo ID, and we should expect nothing less for the protection of our right to vote.” But voting is just that, a right, and restricting particular kinds of ID—used by particular kinds of people—without expanding access to other forms of identification is an obvious attempt to make voting hard for some and not others.

Indeed, the other provisions of the law make it plain that this was the intent. Governor McCrory’s “common sense” initiative bans paid voter-registration drives, removes a week from the early voting period (which was a popular option for black voters in 2008 and 2012), eliminates straight-ticket voting, repeals out-of-precinct voting, repeals a mandate for high-school voter-registration drives (again, because Republicans don’t want young people participating), eliminates flexibility in early-voting hours, and makes it more difficult for precincts to designate additional voting sites for the elderly or voters with disabilities.

Why Did Kal Penn Change His Mind on Racial Profiling?
    BY Luke Zaleski

…What struck us here at GQ, besides the actor’s apparent ends-justify-the-deeply-flawed-means stance on the policy (which a federal judge ruled Monday was tantamount to “racial profiling”) was that Penn seems to be flip-flopping his position on profiling. At least based on what he shared with GQ writer, Mickey Rapkin back in November 2011. Here’s that exchange, where Penn talks about being the victim of profiling himself at airport security checkpoints:

GQ: In HK2, Kumar gets stopped at airport security in a blatant bit of racial profiling. Has that happened to you?

Kal Penn: Oh, many, many times. It’s happened to almost every brown dude I know.

    GQ: That’s infuriating.

Kal Penn: It goes against the notion that something like that makes us safer.

Thanks for checking Sepia. I tell you I am not at all surprised at what people say and do nowadays. I’m telling you folks are showing their true colors left and right.

      • edp4bho

Yes they are Tafr. That old saying- can’t judge a book by its cover- has never rang truer than now. Time was you could feel secure in company of those who look like you what with a shared depressed history. Nowadays, people walk around with social amnesia. To me it’s like they are too weak to fight. Rev Al alluded to this fact today on radio, saying none of us should be too tired to fight by marching- just think of all the inconveniences those who marched 50 years ago faced. Like, what would you be tired from ? Like my momma and grandmom used to say, in the latter days, young folk will be weaker (but wiser- think they meant word-wise), folks would be lovers of self. Well, damn there’s a lot of self-loving going on. They want and will get what they want, all hell be damn. Real sad.

Questlove on Police Racial Profiling, Stop & Frisk, the Message He Took from Trayvon Martin Verdict

On the heels of this week’s historic ruling declaring the “stop-and-frisk” tactics of the New York City Police Department unconstitutional, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson of the Grammy Award-winning band The Roots joins us to talk about his own experiences being racially profiled by police. Questlove describes the first time he was harassed by police, as a young teenager in Philadelphia on his way to Bible study, to the most recent: being pulled over in his car by the NYPD two weeks ago, despite being one of the most acclaimed artists in hip-hop. He also discusses the message he took away as an African-American male from the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the killing of Trayvon Martin: “You’re guilty no matter what, and you just now have to figure out a way to make everyone feel safe and everyone feel comfortable, even if it’s at the expense of your own soul.”

    WikiLeaks: Manning’s apology was forced
By Mario Trujillo – 08/14/13 09:28 PM ET

WikiLeaks late Wednesday described Bradley Manning’s apology as “forced” but, nonetheless, called on a court to take “compassion” and “understanding” into account during his sentencing.

Earlier Wednesday, the former Army intelligence analyst apologized for leaking thousands of pages of classified information, saying he did not intend to harm U.S. national security. His statement at a sentencing hearing came after Manning was convicted of espionage among other crimes last month.

Using rhetoric normally reserved for confessions obtained through torture, the anti-secrecy group to which Manning leaked the information said his apology has been two years in the making and came only after an unfair trial and “inhumane treatment.”

    – – – -First Lady Michelle Obama doesn’t lay down the rhymes, but she does make an appearance in a rap music video to encourage healthy eating.

The video came out earlier this summer, but the song “Everybody,” is on the new album “Songs for a Healthier America,” which comes out in September. The song features Jordin Sparks, Doug E. Fresh, Hip Hop Doc and TV personality Dr. Oz.

Obama doesn’t rap or sing, but she does appear at the beginning of
the video to speak directly to the camera about the “Let’s Move”
    campaign.

“It’s hard to believe that almost exactly one year ago, we launched anationwide campaign called ‘Let’s Move’ to help solve the problem of childhood obesity in this country,” Obama says with a beat in the background. “Back when we first decided to take on the issue of childhood obesity, a lot of people wondered, could we actually make a difference.” – –

Why do I get the feeling that the one person who is right now cursing and trying to tell Russell Simmons to release some statement tomorrow and get that unbelievable offensive video off youtube is the white guy? Michael Skolnik mighty quiet on twitter and its not a coincidence. He was probably the only one with enough sense after seeing it to say “WTF”

I also find it absolutely incredible how ignorant all those involved with making this are…I dare say I really think they need to be checked out by physicians because clearly they’ve all had strokes. Right on the youtube page are the names and twitter/facebook contact info for the actors…It actually says “Connect with the cast”..they honestly don’t see a problem with this at all. You gotta wonder the mindset of the cast and crew of this. Nobody at all thought “ummm, I dont know……let’s rethink this”…nope, nobody.
