Americans Back [President] Obama’s Proposals to Address Gun Violence

PRINCETON, NJ — Given the chance to vote “for” or “against” each of nine key proposals included in President Barack Obama’s plan to reduce gun violence, Americans back all nine. Americans are most likely to be in favor of requiring background checks for all gun sales (91%), increasing funding for mental health programs aimed at youth (82%), increasing funding for programs to train law enforcement and schools in responding to active armed attacks (79%), and increasing criminal penalties for people who buy guns for others — so-called straw purchasers (75%).

Dam, still can’t, still getting the download microsoft silverlight. I’m hesitant to download anything right now, because I have a sneaking suspicion I have a virus on my computer.

          • isonprize

Bottom line: Tom called Tavis on his ego issues. Says Tavis was the little boy who used to do the MLK speeches this time of year. So good he got paid for it, even when he was in college.

Tom spilled some tea about a conversation they had in Jamaica where Tavis was so concerned about his legacy, comparing himself to MLK and even believing that he might not live to see 40, since MLK didn’t.

Tom basically said that it’s all about Tavis and his ego, thinking that he (Tavis) would be the next MLK and not PBO. J. Anthony (rightfully) points out the PBO never compared himself to MLK.

J.Anthony joked (but was quite serious) about Tavis and Cornel being ‘two rich negroes who made a whole lot of money from their poverty tour’

I’m tellin’ ya, they called it, like no one else could, because who don’t know how close TJ was with Tavis? And it was Tavis who broke from the TJMS.

Tom will tell you ‘he’s just a dj’ (and I agree! he can be woefully ignorant at times on a lot of stuff) but this? THIS? THIS RIGHT HERE??? LOLOL

Tom has lots of credibility on this one.

          • crazycanuck

Wow! Thanks for the transcript. He really does seem like he needs some kind of therapy.

          • JojoRaze

Thanks for the low down. The Amy Goodman interview where Tavis stuck up for Walmart w/ no push back exposed that this is all about ego once and for all. He is mad that PBO exposed his hustle. And that’s why MED ran from him. He knew he could make his hustle by supporting PBO after his people told him hateration will get him nowhere.

Tavis will never be MLK because he is beyond selfish. This is not about his legacy it’s about him being rich & famous.

      • isonprize

        DING DING DING DING DING!!!

And one thing that MLK was NOT concerned about was being rich and famous. If anything, even with all of his faults, MLK was humbled by the work that he did and experiences that he lived thru. He got stabbed for the cause. The fact that he chose to have a family and really believed in justice for all made him care for someone other than himself.

But beyond even that, why try to be like someone else? Why not just ‘do you’? Tavis’ obsession with MLK, his hatred of PBO and his ‘make-a-dollar-at-all costs’ are all indicative of deeper issues.

        Note to Tavis:

You are embarrassing yourself. Really, you are. Therapy may be expensive, but it’s worth it. Besides, now you’ve got the money to pay for it.

So, I was reading the whole discussion in the afternoon thread about whether or not PBO should have acknowledged bigotry against our community and I decided to see if previous presidents mentioned racism in their inaugural speeches. Here’s what I found:

“Well, this administration’s objective will be a healthy, vigorous, growing economy that provides equal opportunity for all Americans, with no barriers born of bigotry or discrimination. Putting America back to work means putting all Americans back to work. Ending inflation means freeing all Americans from the terror of runaway living costs. All must share in the productive work of this “new beginning” and all must share in the bounty of a revived economy. With the idealism and fair play which are the core of our system and our strength, we can have a strong and prosperous America at peace with itself and the world.” – Ronald Reagan’s First Inaugural Address

“Let us resolve that we the people will build an American opportunity society in which all of us—white and black, rich and poor, young and old—will go forward together arm in arm. Again, let us remember that though our heritage is one of blood lines from every corner of the Earth, we are all Americans pledged to carry on this last, best hope of man on Earth.” – Ronald Reagan’s Second Inaugural Address

“While many of our citizens prosper, others doubt the promise, even the justice, of our own country. The ambitions of some Americans are limited by failing schools and hidden prejudice and the circumstances of their birth. And sometimes our differences run so deep, it seems we share a continent, but not a country.

We do not accept this, and we will not allow it. Our unity, our union, is the serious work of leaders and citizens in every generation. And this is my solemn pledge: I will work to build a single nation of justice and opportunity.” – George W. Bush’s First Inaugural Address

” In America’s ideal of freedom, the exercise of rights is ennobled by service, and mercy, and a heart for the weak. Liberty for all does not mean independence from one another. Our nation relies on men and women who look after a neighbor and surround the lost with love. Americans, at our best, value the life we see in one another, and must always remember that even the unwanted have worth. And our country must abandon all the habits of racism, because we cannot carry the message of freedom and the baggage of bigotry at the same time.” – George W. Bush’s Second Inaugural Address

    Acknowledgment. Heh….yeah.

And both went on MSM media to do so. If Marty King is sitting right there at the inauguration, he seems to be okay with it.

He asked PBO (and Roberts) to sign the bible. So yeah, I’d say he was okay with it!

            Nell, I didn’t know that.

Yeah, President of the United States, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court signing one of your Family Bibles after receiving and giving the Presidential Oath of Office of the United States of America?

Christine King Farris (MLK’s sister) was at the inauguration. Yeah, I’d say PBO using that bible was “all right” with the King family.

I’ve had a co-worker who was a staunch Democrat, but she still proudly displayed the picture that she got taken with Pres. Bush when he was in town.

    – -Democrats renew push for VAWA

Hoping to put Republicans on the defensive over gender issues, House Democratic leaders on Wednesday renewed their push for legislation designed to prevent the violent abuse of women.

Different versions of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) passed last year in the Senate and the House, but an impasse over the differences proved to be a hurdle too high in an election year, and the bill died with the end of last Congress.

Behind Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the House minority leader, Democrats this week reintroduced their version — which specifies protections for certain minority groups not named in last year’s GOP bill — and called on Republicans to take it up.

“Failure to enact this bill would deprive women and children of vital protection against abuse and law enforcement of essential tools to combat domestic violence,” Pelosi said Wednesday at a press briefing. “We must act now.”

Rep. Gwen Moore (D-Wis.), the lead sponsor of the House bill and herself a victim of domestic assault, said renewing VAWA would go a long way toward preventing the kind of abuse she suffered.

    ‏@ObamaOyeah:
Not sure why the Beyonce thing is such a big deal. After all, I watched Rand Paul lip sync Sean Hannity on the TV this morning.

    • isonprize

      paraphrasing crazy azz Huggy LowDown.

Beyonce lip synching? Big deal. At least it was her voice. For 8 years, we watched GWBush get up there and move his mouth while Dick Cheney did all the work.

      • crazycanuck

Loved that. That should be on twitter

    • JojoRaze

I don’t think the lip-synch was even good singing, but that’s just me. I listen to only gospel and gospel artists, from someone white and Australian like Darlene Zscech to Fred hammond, have to know how to sing to get a record deal. I started to listen to Spanish-language gospel music by this group called en espiritu y en verdad and even they can sang.

I’m not a Bey fan but making a capital case out of this is ridiculous. Modern singers, as a general rule can’t sing because the focus is not on artistry but marketability. I think 99.9 per cent of singers today need to be doing something
else with their time so Bey isn’t an outlier. Whitney even lip-synched her famous national anthem.

else with their time. Bey is not an outlierad a cold and wasn’t gonna cancel. Big whoop.

    • crazycanuck

Not a big Beyonce fan either, but people are forgetting one thing here, some singers don’t like to sing in cold weather, it’s to protect thieir voice. YoYo Ma IIRC, did not actual play in 2009 either, it was to protect the instrument.

      • nellcote

Aretha Franklin ‘Really Laughed’ About Beyonce Lip-Sync Controversy

…”But, when I heard the news this evening that she was pre-recorded I really laughed. I thought it was funny because the weather down there was about 46 or 44 degrees and for most singers that is just not good singing weather,” Franklin told ABC News in an interview. In fact, the weather was even colder than that Monday, around 40 degrees.

“When I heard that I just really cracked up. I thought it was really funny, but she did a beautiful job with the pre-record … next time I’ll probably do the same.”

Of course, in her inauguration performance in 2009, she sang it live because, she says, “I wanted to give people the real thing and pre-recording never crossed my mind.”

She did lament that she wished she hadn’t had to wait so long in the cold four years ago, saying that if she hadn’t, her performance — which had the crowd going wild — would have been even better.

“Had I not had to sit that long, I had to sit for 45 or 30 minutes and it was much colder, it was in the 20s,” Franklin said, of the performance where both her voice and her hat got noticed. “I just wished I could have sung the moment I got there,” she said. “If I could have walked on immediately and sung it wouldn’t have affected my voice the way it did.”

The 70 year-old music legend did admit to lip-syncing once when she performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” before the Detroit Pistons took on the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 5 of the NBA Finals in June of 2004.

So, does she think it’s wrong what The Queen Bey did?

“I think it’s optional really, it’s up to the artist,” Franklin said. “In 2009, I wanted everything to be live and on the real side for the moment as it actually happened. Those were my feelings for my performance, but having come face to face with 28, 22 degrees I am not surprised she pre-recorded. She wanted her performance to be what she wanted to be and she realized it wasn’t going to be the way she wanted it to be or she was going to be running a risk. That’s probably why she pre-recorded exactly how she wanted it to be heard.”

    – – –Evidently, the Secretary Of State’s appearance before the House Foreign Affairs Committee went about the way you’d expect it to go before a House majority that thinks Steve (Impeach The President For Being President) Stockman, Joe (You Lie!) Wilson, and Dana (Dinosaur Flatulence) Rohrabacher should have an important say in how the country conducts its foreign policy. Apparently, the highlight was Rep. Jeff Duncan, from where-the-fck-else South Carolina, who decided to shine up his image for the bookers on Fox.
Responding to Clinton’s assertion that it doesn’t make a difference, at this point, whether the attack was spawned from a spontaneous protest or was coordinated, Duncan said “it makes a difference when Americans think they were misled about something for political reasons.”
–(Apparently, the Secretary’s “What difference does it make?” from Wednesday morning is going to be the wingnut chew-toy of the week inside the bubble. This, I predict, will work as well as “We Did Build It!” worked during the presidential campaign.)

OK, empiricism first. “Americans” do ” think they were misled about something for political reasons.” These would be all those Americans who get their news from Fox, and off the AM radio dial, through their bridgework, and all the other places in which the Jeff Duncans of the world get some run in the media. Unfortunately for Duncan, and fortunately for the rest of us, these Americans have never been anywhere close to a majority.

Obama Likes to Socialize, Just Not With Congress

By Margaret Carlson Jan 22, 2013 5:30 PM CT

One criticism of the president that permeated the nonstop socializing around the inauguration was that a lack of socializing by Barack Obama is to blame for much of the partisan rancor crippling Washington.

If the president would have more parties with members of Congress, the argument goes, the appetite for going over a fiscal cliff just for the fun of it would be replaced by a lofty spirit of cooperation.

It isn’t going to happen, and maybe it shouldn’t. We exaggerate the value of such social events. And, by the way, Obama early on did a lot of having people over to watch sporting events or picnic on the South Lawn. As he said at a recent news conference in answer to a question about the growing criticism of his isolation: He builds it, they come, but the next day they trash him anyway.

Watching the Obamas during the inaugural parade made clear why he has chosen evenings with his wife and daughters over evenings with Congress. A more comfortable foursome you’re unlikely to find.

The president recently lamented that his 14-year-old already doesn’t have time for the card games they used to play, the cry of parents everywhere about teenagers soon to be driving, dating and dreaming of college. In the hours they sat together on Inauguration Day, the girls were fully engaged with their parents — they giggled, got their parents to kiss for photos and boogied to the passing bands. There’s a lot you can fake in politics, but it would be hard to get your kids to rock to parade music with mom and dad.

GOP, nationwide, decided to target African Americans and suppress our votes for the 2012 elections. MSM, many Dems, progressives ignored or remained silent on the issue.

What GOP did was disgusting and should not be tolerated. Black people, in record numbers, stood in line for hours to make our voices heard. It is unacceptable African Americans can have our rights taken/diminished at the whim of white people.

Where is the OUTRAGE? Do Black people think the GOP is going to stop with their voting schemes? Where is the pressure on Dems to do something about voting/election reform? Why is the NAACP running around suing for soda pop rights? Why is Marcia Fudge running around stating CBC is not just for Black people? Has a CBC member sponsored a bill that takes on election reform? Is anyone advocating for Black people anymore? Do Black people thing gay or Latino orgs are going to do th heavy lifting for Black people?

The ease of GOP writing/passing laws to suppress AA votes and the silence by are so called allies should make us pause. What is going on here?

I am ranting but I am a bit troubled by what I read and see.

tell it. the same handful of folks in the MSM that were beating the drumbeat about GOP Voter Suppression during 2012, are the same ones who are pointing out this story.

Teddy Turner runs first ad in campaign to replace Tim Scott
By Cameron Joseph – 01/22/13 08:57 AM ET

High school teacher Teddy Turner (R), the son of media mogul Ted Turner, is up with the first ad in the campaign to fill Sen. Tim Scott’s (R-S.C.) open House seat.

“He went to there work as a cameraman, and left as a conservative,” the ad’s narrator says. “Filming major developments in the Soviet Union, Teddy Turner witnessed the devastation of communism — and it forever changed him. A graduate of the Citadel, husband and father of three, today Turner is an economics teacher in Charleston. Turner will fight for more freedom and less government so our families will have a secure tomorrow. Conservative Teddy Turner for Congress.”

Credit where due, Paul Krugman calls out Ryan:

    Brave, Honest Paul Ryan

Many people, e.g., Jonathan Chait, are noting that when Paul Ryan, deeply offended by the inaugural speech, declared that

No one is suggesting that what we call our earned entitlements — entitlements you pay for, like payroll taxes for Medicare and Social Security — are putting you in a ‘taker’ category. No one would suggest that whatsoever.

the category “no one” includes one Paul Ryan, who declared back in 2010 that

Right now about 60 percent of the American people get more benefits in dollar value from the federal government than they pay back in taxes. So we’re going to a majority of takers versus makers

    *************************************
Paul Ryan is on tape calling people who receive benefits “takers.” I can’t believe he tried to run away from it…

    miranda — -THIS PERSPECTIVE —-YES!!! — – -

    – - — President Obama’s 2nd Inaugural Exposes Radicalism of Modern GOP- -

—- -President Obama’s second Inaugural was the spirited, full-throated defense of the role that government plays in making our society more just that liberals have been waiting to hear for years. While most pundits focused on what the speech said about Obama, I think it’s more significant in what it says about the Republican Party, especially in this key passage:

We, the people, still believe that every citizen deserves a basic measure of security and dignity. We must make the hard choices to reduce the cost of health care and the size of our deficit. But we reject the belief that America must choose between caring for the generation that built this country and investing in the generation that will build its future. For we remember the lessons of our past, when twilight years were spent in poverty, and parents of a child with a disability had nowhere to turn. We do not believe that in this country, freedom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness for the few. We recognize that no matter how responsibly we live our lives, any one of us, at any time, may face a job loss, or a sudden illness, or a home swept away in a terrible storm. The commitments we make to each other – through Medicare, and Medicaid, and Social Security – these things do not sap our initiative; they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great.

    – - -SNIP – - –
    – -That Obama had to defend the New Deal and Great Society in his inaugural — programs that stretch back 80 years — says a lot more about the radicalization of the GOP than it does him.

    - — -Mississippi Governor: ‘There Is No One Who Doesn’t Have Health Care In America’ – —–

—– –Health care reform is unnecessary. According to Bryant, every single American already has the health care they need.>/b>- — —

In order to justify his continued refusal to expand his state’s Medicaid program — which would extend health coverage to an additional 200,000 low-income Mississippians — the governor explained that poor people don’t need a “massive new program” when they can simply visit an emergency room to receive care:</b.

BRYANT: There is no one who doesn’t have health care in America. No one. Now, they may end up going to the emergency room. There are better ways to deal with people that need health care than this massive new program.

    – –COMMENT: – –Judy Shenk
What an idiot! As a medical transcriptionist I do hospital notes daily where uninsured people are in the hospital as a result of not being able to afford their medication for hypertension, diabetes, or whatever. and they get so sick they’re forced to go to the ER and be admitted. NOT the answer. Obviously the GOP has never heard of preventative care. Let’s see, which is cheaper, pay for someone’s medications, or pay for an ER visit and extended hospital stay. But we all know the GOP can’t do math. Those unnecessary ER visits and admissions drive the cost up for all of us.
