Detroit’s Gotham Hotel exuded glamour
RoNeisha Mullen and Dale Rich
February 3, 2011 at 1:00 am

Sitting on the edge of Detroit’s downtown district, the Gotham Hotel was a shining example of the city’s glamour.

The twin-towered hotel at 111 Orchestra Place offered a décor and service that rivaled that of the country’s fanciest hotels.

But there was something about the Gotham besides its magnificent fixtures and cream-of-the-crop clientele that set it apart from other first class hotels in the city.

It was black-owned.

“It was the pride of Detroit and black America. They advertised it everywhere,” said Edward Vaughn, a former state representative and professor of African-American history at several area universities.

“I knew all about the hotel at 111 Orchestra (Place) before I even got to Detroit.”

The nine-story, 200-room inn one block north of Mack and John R was built in 1925 by Albert Hartz for his personal residence.

In 1943, Hartz sold the hotel to John J. White and Irving Roane, two Detroit black businessmen, for $250,000. They turned it into a social center for Detroit’s black community.

Black people were especially proud of the Gotham because it gave them the opportunity to patronize a superior hotel of their own. At its peak, it had 1,000 guests a week.

Famous guests included Olympic great Jesse Owens, author Langston Hughes and civil rights activist and later Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and entertainers Ella Fitzgerald, Sammy Davis Jr. and Duke Ellington.

On the local front, heavyweight boxing champ Joe Louis often could be found in the Ebony Room, the hotel’s restaurant, eating breakfast.

Bow-tie wearing waiters served meals of “tunaflake cocktail lamaze” and “roast dindonneau turkey with oyster stuffing” in the Ebony room, named after Ebony magazine.

Gwen Estes Jones, a former Detroit resident who now lives in Pontiac, remembers visiting the Ebony Room in the 1950s with her husband, Claude Estes.

“There weren’t any black (owned) restaurants that equaled the Gotham,” said Jones, 78. “It was as close to five-star as blacks could get. It was like a step up in life.”

Rooms cost $3-$5 a day and suites, which featured solid mahogany furniture, cost between $7-$8 a day.

The Gotham also featured a drugstore, barbershop and permanent apartments for Detroit’s rich.

Maxine Powell, co-founder and instructor for Motown Record’s in-house finishing school, lived at the Gotham and worked as a manicurist at the hotel in the 1940s, before opening her own finishing and modeling school.

The Gotham ceased its hotel operations in September 1962 after falling on hard times. In November, the building, which had become an illegal gambling den, was raided by more than 100 federal, state and Detroit police officers in what some African-Americans called “Negro removal,” in which blacks were uprooted from the more prominent areas of Detroit.

Police broke down every door in the 200-room hotel, smashing a gambling operation that netted as much as $30 million a year, according to news stories.

“I don’t think there was any reason for it, other than they wanted to move us out of that area,” said Vaughn. The raid “was just the best way for them to do it.”

The building on Orchestra Place was razed in 1963.

Almost 40 years after the Gotham was demolished, a parking lot and deck were constructed on the land.

White died in 1964 awaiting trials on federal gambling charges related to the numbers operation at the hotel.

The old Gotham hotel is gone, but its legacy is often resurrected in documentaries, books and stage plays based on Paradise Valley and the “finest Negro hotel in America.”

Federal Judge Upholds Billboard Slamming Jindal On Medicaid Expansion
    April 8, 2014 5:12 pm

Disappointing — and slightly embarrassing — news arrived on Tuesday
for conservative Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal, when a federal judge ruled in favor of MoveOn.Org, the liberal organization that put up a billboard in the state slamming Jindal’s refusal to expand Medicaid.

MoveOn had been sued in March by lieutenant governor Jay Dardenne, whose office runs the state’s tourism industry. Dardenne, representing the state of Louisiana, accused the group of slandering the “Louisiana: Pick Your Passion” motto when it set up a billboard in the Baton Rouge area that read, “LOU!SIANA: Pick Your Passion! But hope you don’t love your health. Gov. Jindal’s denying Medicaid to 242,000 people.” According to the suit, because MoveOn.org used the tourism campaign logo to blast an elected official, it had violated trademark laws.

…U.S. District Court Judge Shelly Dick sided with the organization,
using the First Amendment in her rationale against Dardenne — and, by extension, Jindal.

“The State has not demonstrated a substantial likelihood of
prevailing on its burden of proving confusion by viewers of the
billboard,” Dick explained in her ruling. “Furthermore, the State has failed to demonstrate a compelling reason to curtail MoveOn.org’s political speech in favor of protecting of the State’s service mark.”

Rep. McAllister might ask FBI to probe leak of ‘kissing’ video
    By Mario Trujillo

Rep. Vance McAllister (R-La.) is considering sending a letter to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) requesting an FBI investigation into the release of a surveillance video that showed him kissing a former staff member, his office said.

“At this point, there has not been a letter sent to Speaker Boehner,” spokeswoman Jennifer Dunagin said in a statement. “Right now, the congressman is exploring the option. This security breach is something that warrants an investigation, but how we go about doing that is yet to be determined.”

Dunagin’s comments come after a local Louisiana newspaper, The News Star, reported that McAllister’s office would request the FBI investigation on Wednesday.

  • Town

If the Republicans truly believe Obama has violated the Constitution and
has proof of these violations it is their Consititutional duty to
impeach Obama. If they have proof he is going against the Constitution
and they won’t impeach him because they’re scared of race, blowback,
etc. they are derelict in THEIR Constitutional duties and should be
    removed from office.

They have no proof and they know he hasn’t
done anything wrong, so they are blaming the color of his skin for why
they can’t impeach him even though they really really want to.

    • rikyrah

Being President while Black is not an impeachable offense. I am tired of these mofos in the MSM letting these assets talk about impeachment without demanding that the list the President’s crimes.

      • MsKitty

I wish one of these journalists would call them on it one time with “So what exactly is stopping you from drawing up the articles right now?”

        • Town

Or if a “journalist” would ask them if they are being derelict in their constitutional duties by not impeaching Obama if they have proof he has violated the Constitution?

        • crazycanuck

That would mean they will actually have to WORK as journalists.

      • Rhoda

The MSM hates Barack Obama: he’s their generation and he’s got the wife, the babies, the family, the history, the education, and the love of a generation of Americans. The last American that was embraced as Barack Obama has been by the world was Jack Kennedy. It kills them they have yet to bring him down or destroy him; they’ve been searching for a way.

      • crazycanuck

Being President while Black is not an impeachable offense

They want to make it one

    • Rhoda

It’s killing them the worst thing that happened to this administration was a website malfunction that is a product of an archaic contracting system Congress needs to fix.

They got nothing on Barack Obama; if they did it’d be out there right now.

Just see how they’re going after Rev. Al; who the hell outs an informant like that? They’re putting a man’s life at risk to try to hit the President; and watch him pull Rev. Al closer.

I can not wait for this man’s post presidency and his books; he’s going to go after the culture of Washington and settle a lot of scores. Host of folks thinking they’re so big and bad; they’re going to see the truth come 2017.

    • lamh36

I thought I posted the link earlier to that idiot, but i guess it was deleted?

    • Scopedog

If they do try to impeach him, I wouldn’t be surprised if some Emos came running up with a list of “charges” to hand to the GOP–you know, the usual dross they keep talking about (to the exclusion of major issues that need addressing)–drones, the NSA, Snowden, not putting Bush and Cheney on trial, no public option….

GEICOBAMACARE? The ACA Could Save You Money On Car Insurance
    DYLAN SCOTT – APRIL 9, 2014, 6:00 AM EDT

The ancillary effects of Obamacare will take years to mete out. But a study released Wednesday has taken a stab at some of them, particularly other forms of insurance. Its conclusion? Expanding health insurance coverage might drive down the costs of auto insurance.

RAND Corp, a non-profit think tank, released the study estimating how Obamacare would influence car insurance, workers’ compensation claims and medical malpractice suits. For the first two, it projects a decrease in liability costs, which could in turn lead to lower costs for consumers. For the latter, the analysts anticipate an increase in costs.

    more here: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/obamacare-car-insurance

    • rikyrah

I enjoy a good Obamacare story….but lower my car insurance? Ummmm, ok

    • Rhoda

They’ve been lying on Obamacare so long; they’re going to start calling it the ACA as the good news starts to roll in; and those waiting for premium shock to hit in November should think again. For the most part; insurance companies are breathing a sigh of relief to still be ALIVE and have customers and have costs starting to come down. They are all in with the ACA.

  • Rhoda

    Hello, POU!

I’m well and I hope you all are doing great.

So, yesterday Atty. Gen. Holder got into it with the fool from Texas: Louise Gohmert and let him have it an white folks are upset. This is why I love that man. Apparently at their last dustup, Gohmert said something ridiculous: Gohmert – “The attorney general will not cast aspersions on my asparagus.”

Yesterday, Holder ended the conversaition saying “Good Luck with your asparagus.” and some folks had a problem with it:

That comment is simple to explain. It was, as the kids say, an f-you, a not-subtle dig at Gohmert’s reputation for exaggeration and confusion. It was an attempt to make Gohmert feel bad, to get under his skin. It was, in other words, punitive — not necessarily the sort of thing you want to see from America’s main law enforcement official, particularly when he’s being grilled by the committee that oversees his work.

Seriously, these people kill me. Gohmert being on a commitee to oversea ANYTHING is the real travesty. I think AG Holder was incredibly classy while being berated, lied on, and hectored by an ignoramous.

    • Town

The asparagus statement isn’t what got Gohmert flustered. It was when Holder said “Don’t go there, buddy.” Gohmert was extremely taken aback when Holder said that, because that’s a “knuck if you buck” type of statement.

Many white folks don’t like backtalk of any kind from a non-white.

      • Rhoda

        I see what you mean.

And NOW they want to play like they were always down with the president and get in on the health care glow; a healthcare reform they tried to KILL.

Dick Morris: Investigate 2012 vote fraud
    http://thehill.com/opinion/dick-morris/203019-dick-morris-investigate-2012-vote-fraud

    • Rhoda

I want to know the story in Ohio. Karl Rove was a man thwarted; I have no doubt the Obama digital team screwed up some plans Rove & CO. had; plans they likely pulled on Kerry in 2004 (another election that came down to Ohio).

Mitt Romney was a man TOLD he’d win; that’s why he didn’t right a concession speach. The fix was in an Barack Obama fucked with it; that’s part of the anger on the right and among the money people.

      • Town

Thing is, Obama DID NOT need Ohio to win in 2012. Even if Diebold swung Ohio to Romney, Virginia & Florida put Obama over the top.

        • Rhoda

I’m confident that the Ohio setup; they had a similar plan in place in FL and VA. These folks were just TOO sure of themseleves and with that freak out on TV; well I’m sorry but it makes me feel like Ohio was supposed to be the start of a comeback narative. JMHO. I know it’s a conspiracy theory; but that’s the vibe I get from these folks.

Too much money went into bringin down Barack Obama and you don’t put a billion dollars in without some security.

          • jziglar

I doubt it ! There is no way that someone wouldn’t find out in this day and age. The chance of getting busted trying to do something fraudulent on that scale would be very high, and the people responsible would do some serious jail time.

I think they really believed that Obama was going to lose because they’ve bought their own BS after selling it to their constituents for so many years. The GOP is not that competent, and they’ve proven it over the past couple of years.

          • Rhoda

Did you see the heartbleed virus? That was on the internet for two plus years; just grabbing information and no one knew. It was undetectable from regular scans; apparently they were checking memory usage and that is how they figured this out. Some guy from google and another security place. No one can even say what it was used for, who did it, why they did it, and what the hell it means for us other than to change our passwords.

There are a lot of things that go on; we aren’t privy to and when a man like Karl Rove (who is not a man prone to freak outs) well freaks out; I’m gonna wonder why.

Like I said, it’s a conspiracy theory. But I really will always believe these folks had something planned; and they were stopped.

The Obama digital team wasn’t corporate; they were headed by this hacker dude and they were RELIGIOUS about security, about their software, and about taking care of buisness. I really feel like they found something and they stopped something and there are a lot of stories that won’t be told; but I hope they get out eventually.

            JMHO

          • jziglar

Don’t get me wrong. I do believe that they tried to cheat, but I don’t believe that had a plan to flip the election from a landslide to a small Romney victory when it would be near impossible to cheat on a massive scale like that. If the election was a squeaker like 2000 and 2004 where it came down to 1 state then yes it could be possible.

Also Karl Rove is not that smart. He guaranteed in 2006 that the republicans would hold the senate and the house because he had “real math”. Turned out that they lost both houses that year. He spent over a billion in attack ads and actually lost seats in 2012.

The republican party of today is not that competent. They have proven it time and again over the past few years.

          • BoomerGal

After W. stole the election in 2000, I don’t put it past them.

They may have had a plan in place for FL, but VA? I doubt it because they were so high on their own Tea Party supply b/c McDonnell had won and the Democrats were on the run.

            Not a Diebold plan, anyway.

          • jziglar

They had a plan in FL and it was long waiting lines, reducing early voting days, and creating long ballots. It almost worked but the people beat them back.

          • Town

There were long lines in VA as well, only in the “blue” areas, of course.

They can “try it” in VA but there are too many white folks living in the disenfranchised areas for them to get away with it. A third of the state lives in Northern VA, which trends blue and it’s way too expensive up there for only black & brown folks to live.

Death of an Orlando woman illustrates perils of Florida’s refusal to expand Medicaid

Charlene Dill is one of an estimated 2,000 people who expected to face dire health issues due to lack of access to care
By Billy Manes PUBLISHED: APRIL 9, 2014

    excerpt:
Dill’s death was not unpredictable, nor was it unpreventable. She had a documented heart condition for which she took medication. But she also happened to be one of the people who fall within the gap created by the 2012 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that allowed states to opt out of Medicaid expansion, which was a key part of the Affordable Care Act’s intention to make health care available to everyone. In the ensuing two years, 23 states have refused to expand Medicaid, including Florida, which rejected $51 billion from the federal government over the period of a decade to overhaul its Medicaid program to include people like Dill and Woolrich – people who work, but do not make enough money to qualify for the Affordable Care Act’s subsidies. They, like many, are victims of a political war – one that puts the lives and health of up to 17,000 U.S. residents and 2,000 Floridians annually in jeopardy, all in the name of rebelling against President Barack Obama’s health care plan.

Yet Pryor who has to be the most endangered democrat in red Arkansas is up 3 points against Cotton in the latest local poll. If the republicans were doing so well they would be up double digits in Arkansas, Louisiana, North Carolina, and Alaska. Right now it looks like McConnell is a dead turtle, and the republicans could very well lose in Georgia. UConn’s men drew inspiration from women in their lives
    Nicole Auerbach, USA TODAY
    9:06 a.m. EDT April 8, 2014

DALLAS — Kevin Ollie’s voice had gotten scratchier and raspier as the night wore on.

Which was convenient, because in this moment, he just needed to listen. His boss, Connecticut athletic director Warde Manuel, leaned close and reminded his coach, “You know, President Obama is going to call you.”

Ollie nodded. He knew the drill. He’d been on the Huskies’ staff back in 2011, the last time Connecticut had won a national championship. Back then, the President’s call wasn’t for him; it was for Jim Calhoun.

This call will come, likely Tuesday, a final exclamation point on what has been a surreal run and unexpected NCAA men’s basketball title for these Huskies. “I’m going to tell him I know he picked Michigan State,” Ollie said, smirking at the thought of Connecticut’s vanquished Elite Eight foe. But that call still remained hours away.

Here, in the bowels of the Hyatt Regency Dallas, the clock ticked past one o’clock. Ollie ducked into a quiet room that was reserved for Connecticut players and filled with a buffet of fried chicken, fries and broccoli. He scanned the room quickly and found the person he’d been looking for: his wife, Stephanie.

Only Stephanie understood the lows well enough to embrace this high fully; she’d lived them, too.

Eric Holder, attorney general, identity theft victim
    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

After death and taxes, they say, identity theft is becoming the third inevitability of life.

Just ask the attorney general of the United States. Eric Holder’s name and Social Security number, among scores of others’, were appropriated last year by two men who then turned Holder from the nation’s top law enforement official into a low-wage Walmart worker, filed a tax return in his name and asked that the refund be sent to the fake Holder.

Federal agents caught the scam in progress before the “Holder” refund could be fully processed, and the suspects, former high school friends at Southwest DeKalb High who are now 21, have both pleaded guilty to identity theft fraud. For Holder, the Atlanta scam apparently had few consequences.

Michelle Obama’s mother plays crucial role

    By Krissah Thompson, Juliet Eilperin
    5:20 PM Monday Apr 7, 2014

It was a rare, almost intimate scene, between Michelle Obama and her mother, played out before the world. When a group of Chinese girls invited the First Lady to skip rope at an event on the ancient city wall during her recent visit to Xi’an, China, she kicked her heels off to slide on a pair of flats. Before an aide could swoop in and pick up her daughter’s shoes, Marian Robinson bent down to grab them.

Then, the 76-year-old grandmother beamed as Obama jumped. Obama’s daughters, Sasha and Malia, stood nearby, shyly hanging back as their mother took centre stage. Robinson clapped and smiled.

    For six days in China,
the least-public resident of the White House was a central figure on
the public stage. Overseas trips such as the one Robinson took with her daughter and granddaughters last month provide an uncommon glimpse into their family dynamic and the critical role she has continued to play in the first family.

    ……………….

In China, Michelle Obama proudly showed off her mother, and their bond was obvious. Max Baucus, the newly appointed US ambassador to China, tasked with introducing the First Lady to Chinese students at Peking University, offered, “She’s so devoted to her mother, Mrs Robinson.”

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=11233780

    • goldenstar

The presence of Mrs. Robinson cannot be underrated. In China, paying attention to the elders is very important. And, the optics of it all would be duly noted by all Chinese. The Obama women demonstrated that this matters and it’s not just Chinese who lead a full life with their elders.

Someone here posted this week about the Administration making PUBLIC what doctors involved with Medicare are paid, and there was whining about the Administration doing so.

    As always, FOLLOW THE MONEY.

Don’t ever ever believe the bullshyt that the GOP tries to shovel that doctors are mad about Medicare ‘pricing policies’. That they can’t make as much money with Medicare patients.

    FOLLOW.THE.MONEY.

    ………………………………………….

Sliver of Medicare Doctors Get Big Share of Payouts

A tiny fraction of the 880,000 doctors and other health care providers who take Medicare accounted for nearly a quarter of the roughly $77 billion paid out to them under the federal program, receiving millions of dollars each in some cases in a single year, according to the most detailed data ever released in Medicare’s nearly 50-year history.

In 2012, 100 doctors received a total of $610 million, ranging from a
Florida ophthalmologist who was paid $21 million by Medicare to dozens of doctors, eye and cancer specialists chief among them, who received more than $4 million each that year. While more money by far is spent for routine office visits than any other single expenditure, one of the most heavily reimbursed procedures — costing a total of $1 billion for 143,000 patients — is for a single treatment for an eye disorder common in the elderly.

Philip Bump: The Source Of Black Poverty Isn’t Black Culture, It’s American Culture

Americans don’t want to imagine that our racist history is actually an ongoing, racist reality. We like to look at racism as a thing that has gotten better (if not gone away completely) and that the way black Americans are treated in society is actually colorblind. So, if forced to pick between the idea that our country’s structures and systems are biased toward white people or the idea that black communities are flawed, many pick the latter. Some doing so, of course, because they’re racist.

Believing that black culture is primarily at fault means believing that black cultural attitudes
are why the black unemployment rate has always been at least 50 percent higher than white unemployment. Is black culture why this 2003 study found that job applicants “with white-sounding names are 50 percent more likely to get called for an initial interview than applicants with African-American-sounding names”? American history demonstrates countless examples of racist obstruction of black economic success. Ongoing examples show countless ways in which black Americans are still obstructed in the same way.

Alex Pareene: Morning Joe’s Special Privileges: Why Is MSNBC Allowing Him To Help GOP Raise Money?

Joe Scarborough, who is definitely not running for president, is going to New Hampshire next month to deliver the keynote address at the Chesire County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner. This follows another visit to New Hampshire last month, where Scarborough delivered a speech to the Northeast Republican Leadership Conference. Joe Scarborough would like you to know that he is not planning a run for president — he just happens to enjoy New Hampshire, I guess, and who doesn’t? (He also recently visited South Carolina.) But as the Huffington Post’s Michael Calderone reports, this totally normal not-at-all presidential campaign-related New Hampshire visit probably violates MSNBC policy on hosts raising money for political parties or candidates. Because it is a fundraiser.

Maybe it doesn’t make a ton of sense to allow hosts to advocate, on-air, for certain parties and candidates, but not to donate to or raise money for them, but those are the rules, and those rules are what got then-MSNBC host Keith Olbermann suspended in 2010, after Olbermann donated money to three Democratic candidates. This year, MSNBC forced liberal host Ed Schultz to withdraw from a Democratic Party fundraiser. This will be Scarborough’s second Republican Party fundraiser of the year. He is delivering the keynote address, not merely moderating a panel. The money raised for the dinner will go to Cheshire County Republicans. It all seems pretty cut and dried.

Sahil Kapur: Republicans Warn Of New Obamacare Reality: No Repeal Without Alternative

For all the challenges still facing Obamacare and its supporters, conservative health wonks are increasingly cautioning Republicans that the politics of the issue have changed in the wake of the 7 million initial sign-ups. Simply repealing the law is no longer an option, they warn, even if Republicans gain the power to do so. If they want to unwind the law, the least they’ll have to do is coalesce around health care solutions of their own, lest they strip away benefits for millions of Americans without a plan of their own. And the party is far from a consensus on how they’d replace the law. There is internal dissent on whether Republicans ought to come up with an alternative. One congressional GOP health aide, who was granted anonymity to speak candidly, said his party is as determined as ever to fight Obamacare, and will remain so as long as it exhibits failure. He said devising an alternative is fraught with the difficulty of crafting a new benefits structure that doesn’t look like the Affordable Care Act.

“If you want to say the further and further this gets down the road, the harder and harder it gets to repeal, that’s absolutely true,” the aide said. “As far as repeal and replace goes, the problem with replace is that if you really want people to have these new benefits, it looks a hell of a lot like the Affordable Care Act. … To make something like that work, you have to move in the direction of the ACA. You have to have a participating mechanism, you have to have a mechanism to fund it, you have to have a mechanism to fix parts of the market.” It sheds light on why Republicans haven’t yet followed through on the “replace” component of their “repeal and replace” mantra, more than four years after Obamacare was enacted. The popular parts of the law, most notably the preexisting conditions guarantee, are unsustainable without unpopular parts like the individual mandate. Unraveling the parts people dislike means unraveling the whole structure, and rebuilding the well-liked elements is difficult without arriving at a similar place as Obamacare.

NPR: Wave Of Newly Insured Patients Strains Oregon Health Plan

Millions of Americans who didn’t have health insurance last year now do because of the Affordable Care Act. In Lane County, Oregon, Trillium Community Health Plan is struggling to deal with a huge influx of new patients looking for health care. CEO Terry Coplin says the company figured 26,000 people would sign up in the first few years. Instead, about that many signed up right off the bat. Cheryl Stumph is one of them. She and her husband, Mike, run Green Streak Automotive, an all-service garage in Veneta, Ore. Last November, Stumph’s 27-year-old son had a stroke and died at the wheel of his tow truck. The stroke stemmed from a genetic problem, so Stumph spent the winter worrying about her six other kids.Genetic testing is expensive, and she didn’t have health insurance. But now she and her family get Medicaid through Trillium Health. She’s thrilled to be able to get a mammogram and treatment for a stubborn infection. The kids can get genetic testing.

She says her husband has a chronic medical problem that needs attention, too. Stories like Stumph’s are being repeated across Oregon. Trillium’s Coplin says the health plan has come up with a four-part plan to deal with this unexpected influx. First, it will pay bonuses to doctors who accept new patients covered by Trillium. Second, Trillium is giving Lane County $900,000 to open a new clinic in an existing building. “They have proposed ways that they can get this clinic up and running by mid-year,” says Coplin. Third, Trillium is hiring a consultant to see if existing clinics can increase efficiency, for example, by changing who fills out forms. “Having physicians do clerical work is really a waste of valuable resources,” Coplin says. And finally, Trillium is offering $500,000 to any clinic or group of physicians willing to expand their practice to take on another 5,000 adult patients.

Danny Vinik: House GOP Leader Admits His Party Doesn’t Care About The Long-Term Unemployed

Over the past three months, Republicans have offered one excuse after another for not extending unemployment insurance. With the Senate passing a UI extension on Monday night, House Republican leaders are searching for any reason to oppose the bill—and openly admitting that they only care about the politics of the long-term unemployment crisis. Now Representative Tom Cole, the deputy whip, has come up with a new one: House Republicans don’t feel any pressure to pass it. “I don’t think there is a great sense of pressure on our members,” Cole said Monday.

“The prevailing view in our conference is that there aren’t adequate pay-fors and it’s time for this program to come to an end.” In other words, House Republicans will only help the long-term unemployed when they think there is political pressure on them to do so—not because it is sound public policy. Then again, at least Cole is being honest: House Republicans don’t care about the long-term unemployed. They only care about the politics surrounding them.

Time for the right wing to disparage and bash Hank Aaron!
    —————————–
    excerpt:
Aaron’s march to history ended 40 years ago today, when his 715th home run vaulted him past Ruth as baseball’s all-time home run leader. Yet it was an often joyless and lonely pursuit, and Aaron says he has good reason to hang onto the cruel correspondence.

“To remind myself,” Aaron tells USA TODAY Sports, “that we are not that far removed from when I was chasing the record. If you think that, you are fooling yourself. A lot of things have happened in this country, but we have so far to go. There’s not a whole lot that has changed.

“We can talk about baseball. Talk about politics. Sure, this country has a black president, but when you look at a black president, President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the Republicans with the way he’s treated.

“We have moved in the right direction, and there have been improvements, but we still have a long ways to go in the country.

“The bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have neckties and starched shirts.”

Yep time for some bashing mixed with some not so subtle racism. For Example: “Hank Aaron like all of the other blacks have a gang mentality where they will always defend blacks no matter what. They only voted for Obama because he is black, and they are the real racists.”

Obama summit with Al Sharpton still on
By Justin Sink April 09, 2014, 01:04 pm

The White House said Wednesday President Obama was not reconsidering his trip Friday to a summit hosted by Rev. Al Sharpton amid revelations the civil rights leader assisted an investigation by the FBI and NYPD into the mob.

“No,” White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One. “Rev. Sharpton and the National Action Network have made significant contributions to civil rights efforts, and the president looks forward to appearing at the conference.”

On Tuesday, Sharpton defended his role in the investigation, saying he had been threatened by “music industry goons.”

“They were threatening to kill me,” Sharpton said at a press conference. “I did the right thing and would do it again.”

That’s what the Rev AL smear campaign was all about. The msm ain’t slick we see through there b.s.

      • jziglar

You can tell they are getting desperate. They have tried everything over the past 5 years, and the best thing they could come up with about Al Sharpton was that he helped take down the mob. That’s some weak stuff.

        • Alma98

That they’re acting like it’s a bad thing shows they have lost what little mind they had.

    • itgurl_29

      Probably April.

    • Aquagranny911

FUCK THE FUCKING MEDIA! This is a deliberate smear campaign. They want him out of his show because he speaks truth & they want to use him to hurt PBO & distract from the real issues.

Rev Al told it last night & this is not NEWS. The Rev said he wrote about it in his book some years ago.

    • rikyrah

I am back at the tweet from yesterday asking was it not the takedown of the Mob that propelled Rudy Giuliani to the Mayor’s office? And I ask again….what was the Mob in your community…..a charity organization? Must have been for the way some reacted to this news.

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

OK! The foundation of Giuliani’s political career was his takedown of the mob, but now they have a problem with Rev. taking them down?

And Rev. needs to watch his back with his NBC/MSNBC colleagues. On NBC Nightly News, they had a picture of Rev with the words “FBI INFORMANT” in big bold letters right under the pic. And according to out Twitter timeline, the Joe Scarborough and the other Morning Joke panelists were making fun of Rev.

        • Aquagranny911

In our loco gun culture this is just like putting a bulls eye on someone.

No one will ever convince me that the tundra bitch putting a gunsight on Gabby Giffords had nothing to do with the shootings in Tucson. It was never adequately explained why Laughner picked her, of all people, to target.

These goatfiggers with their “second amendment solutions” are inciting the fragile & mentally ill to act out with violence. Not to even mention when one of these survivalist racists might go completely off the rails & shoot somebody or lots of somebodies.

This kind of ugly BS needs to stop!

  • Aquagranny911

Hola POU! It has already begun. NRA shills coming on Gun Sense blogs to say: “See! Lets ban all knives now! Knife control! blah, blah”

The only thing I have to say is, if that student had been armed with 2 guns instead of two knives there would be 20 near death or dead instead of 20 wounded & most likely to survive. Given the circumstances, if that kiddo had a gun, there would have probably been many more injured, including the principal & teacher who wrestled him to the ground & held him until he could be disarmed.

Praying for the wounded & their families that all recover in perfect health, Amen!

    • Scopedog

I think the NRA needs to listen to Chris Rock’s “Bullet Control” proposal….

      • Alma98

I would so love for that to be made into law lol.

      • Aquagranny911

I shouldn’t be laughing but I can’t help it. Scope, it just pisses me off that we can’t get some control over the guns in this country.

Baseball Great Hank Aaron: Obama’s GOP Critics Are Like The KKK

    Tom Kludt – April 9, 2014, 12:53 PM EDT

…According to Aaron, things are not that much different today — the country’s first black president notwithstanding.

“We can talk about baseball. Talk about politics. Sure, this country
has a black president, but when you look at a black president, President Obama is left with his foot stuck in the mud from all of the
Republicans with the way he’s treated,” Aaron said.

He added, “We have moved in the right direction, and there have been
improvements, but we still have a long ways to go in the country. The
bigger difference is that back then they had hoods. Now they have
    neckties and starched shirts.”
