Wednesday Open Thread: African Americans in Oceanography/Marine Biology

Happy Hump Day Obots!

Today’s Scientist of the Sea is Ashanti Johnson.

From TheGrio:

As an African-American girl growing up in Dallas, Texas, Ashanti Johnson wanted to be like a famous French man: Jacques Cousteau.

“My first exposure [to oceanography] was watching him on TV,” says Johnson, 39. “The ocean for me represented the unknown… I think because it was so vast and diverse.”

But as she pursued an education in oceanography, Johnson realized her field of study wasn’t so diverse. When she enrolled at Texas A&M University at Galveston, there were only eight black people at the university known for marine studies. Johnson became the first African-American to receive a degree in marine science. The view wasn’t much different at Texas A & M’s main campus, where she became the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. in oceanography.

“To some extent, my community [of scientists] has not done the greatest job in letting the public know about career opportunities in earth system sciences. If you’re smart, you’re told you can be a doctor or lawyer… but people don’t know what a geologist or oceanographer does,” says Johnson.

After becoming an assistant professor of chemical oceanography at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science in 2003, Johnson created the Minorities Striving and Pursuing Higher Degrees of Success in Earth System Science initiative. Since its inception, MS PHDS has helped more than 175 minority college students majoring in earth system science find jobs and network with other minority scientists. Johnson says the program also gives minority students who often feel isolated in their respective majors, a much-needed support system.

“They call it the MS PHDS family. So once you’re adopted into it, you’re part of the family for life,” says Johnson.

Johnson’s efforts were even recognized by President Barack Obama. In January, she was honored with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring.

Johnson says she’s just getting started. Her hope is to make MS PHDS a model program for other majors like math and physics. Perhaps making even more fields where minorities are underrepresented, as colorful as the deep, blue sea.

U.S. Set for Biggest State-Local Jobs Boost Since 2007
By Rich Miller & William Selway – Jan 7, 2013 7:01 PM ET

State and local governments are in their best financial shape since the recession, giving them leeway to cushion the U.S. economy from federal budget cuts with spending and hiring of their own.

After slashing their workforces by about half a million in the past five years, state and local authorities will add employees in 2013, said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics Inc. in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Their payrolls in the fourth quarter will be 220,000 larger than in the same period for 2012, he projects.

Their expenditures and investment also will be higher, rising by 1.8 percent, triple the increase last year, according to projections by St. Louis-based Macroeconomic Advisers.

“The bloodletting on the state- and local-government level has finally passed through,” said Jim Diffley, chief U.S. regional economist for IHS Global Insight in Philadelphia. “They’re no longer subtracting from growth.”

Presidential Inaugural Committee Announces Inaugural Poet

WASHINGTON, DC — Today, the Presidential Inauguration Committee (PIC) announced that Richard Blanco will serve as the Inaugural poet at the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, January 21. Blanco will be the youngest-ever Inaugural poet and the first Hispanic or LGBT person to recite a poem at the swearing-in ceremony.

“I’m honored that Richard Blanco will join me and Vice President Biden at our second Inaugural,” President Obama said today. “His contributions to the fields of poetry and the arts have already paved a path forward for future generations of writers. Richard’s writing will be wonderfully fitting for an Inaugural that will celebrate the strength of the American people and our nation’s great diversity.”

Born in Spain to Cuban exiles, Blanco’s parents emigrated to New York City days after his birth and eventually settled in Miami. Blanco began his career as a consultant engineer. Writing about abstract concepts and preparing arguments on behalf of his clients helped Blanco think about the “engineering” of language, and he left his job in 1999 for the creative writing faculty at Central Connecticut State University until 2001. Thereafter he served as instructor at various universities throughout the country, including American and Georgetown universities, all the while maintaining his career in consulting engineer.

    How Obama Won The Internet

Would you rather fight one hundred duck-sized horses or one horse-sized duck? In the second exclusive excerpt from Panic 2012: The Sublime and Terrifying Inside Story of Obama’s Final Campaign, a behind-the-scenes look at the president’s historic Reddit IAmA.

    Charlottesville, Virginia

    August 29, 2012

Obama spoke before the crowd of college students in Charlottesville. He’d been snubbed by the University of Virginia’s Republican Board of Visitors, who didn’t allow him to speak on campus, claiming it would disrupt the first days of class. Instead, the president’s rally was held at a 10-minute walk from campus, at an open-air arena downtown. It was hot. One army veteran was passed out, hungover, on a press table. Obama kept the waving brief.

He walked off the stage to a holding room in the back of the arena.

Two staff members waited for him. One was 27-year-old Teddy Goff, head of Obama’s digital team; the other was the president’s below-the-radar speechwriter, Cody Keenan. James Kvaal, David Plouffe, Jen Psaki, and Pete Souza also walked in and out. The room had white walls, beige tile, a cheap standing lamp behind a desk and chair, and an Apple computer with a wireless mouse on the desk.

The president sat down in front of the MacBook Air.
They snapped a picture of the president, and Goff posted it on the Internet Reddit site.
    Verified.

Really good read (Time’s Michael Grunwald):

Obama and the Liberals: Three Quarters of a Loaf Is Never Enough

I pledged awhile back, after a certain media mogul trashed President Obama for failing to solve global warming, that I would not spend all my time ridiculing the Obama-bashing disillusionment addicts of the left. (Pretty good week for that mogul, huh?) I mostly kept my word for 18 months, until their whiny response to the fiscal cliff deal inspired me to launch a Twitter tirade about Ivory Soap liberals, Choose Your Own Adventure liberals, Heighten The Contradictions liberals, and progressive utopianism in general. Now that I’m back from vacation, I thought I’d try to explain in more than 140 characters what I meant. Tomorrow I’ll try to explain why it’s important, and not just for the next round of budget talks.

    Good Morning, Everyone :)

  • GN

2008 through 2012, histrionics stayed winning. Screaming everyone else out of discourse, on topic after topic, tantrum politickers manufactured the appearance of consensus and gained disproportionate media influence with nonstop hysterical proclamations and demands. I’m hoping that in 2013, we can leave this style of politicking behind where it belongs. Following is one example of many:

From The Israel Lobby and Hagel

Ed Koch–a great mayor of New York and one of the most clever politicians I’ve ever covered–has gone off the high board on the Hagel nomination. There is much that is odious about Koch’s statement, but the idea that the President has “betrayed” Israel by nominating Hagel is the most outrageous.

    Read more: http://swampland.time.com/2013/01/08/the-israel-lobby-and-hagel/#ixzz2HUL56qo2

    **********
With the betrayal rhetoric and tendency to go into high dudgeon at any hint of displeasure, the tantrum politicking needs to go. With all due respect to Mayor Koch, have a seat, nobody has “betrayed” you and the nonstop tantrums on a whole range of issues (he’s hardly alone in declaring himself betrayed due to simple disagreement with the PBO admin) have created an ultra-toxic discourse which is bad for everyone.

    GOP disarray over debt ceiling
Posted by Greg Sargent on January 8, 2013 at 3:45 pm

Here’s another sign that the debt ceiling doesn’t give the GOP the leverage it claims: You’re starting to see mixed messaging among Republicans about the way forward in the debt limit battle.

The latest: On MSNBC today, GOP Rep. Tom Cole — last seen breaking with the GOP leadership’s strategy on the fiscal cliff — dismissed the viability of one of John Boehner’s latest suggestions, i.e., the idea that Republicans might force monthly debt ceiling increases. Boehner had suggested the idea in an interview with Stephen Moore.

On MSNBC, Cole was asked whether he thought Boehner could still make good on the “Boehner rule,” which dictates that Republicans will insist on a dollar of spending cuts for every dollar the debt ceiling is raised. Cole said Boehner would make good on it. But then he was asked explicitly if he supported the idea of monthly increases. Cole replied:

“No, I actually think that’s a very short sighted way to do it. I would hope the president presents some sort of solution that’s much longer term than that.”

Cole put the onus on the president to come up with a long term resolution, and throughout the interview he repeatedly predicted Republicans would prevail and get the spending cuts they want, but he nonetheless described Boehner’s idea of “monthly” debt ceiling increases as a nonstarter.

    Dick Armey dishes dirt accidentally

    By Steve Benen
    Wed Jan 9, 2013 8:30 AM EST

There’s been a remarkable amount of drama surrounding Dick Armey’s departure from FreedomWorks, culminating Friday with a stunning report from Media Matters, who interviewed the former House Majority Leader directly. Armey had all kinds of interesting insights to share with the progressive group, including tidbits on pay-for-play agreements with Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, and the FreedomWorks’ practice of charging activists to attend free events.

Though many of Armey’s revelations should probably be taken with a grain of salt — the former GOP leader seemed confused about some of the details he shared — there was a larger question that puzzled nearly everyone: why in the world was Dick Armey dishing dirt to Media Matters?

The Daily Caller, a conservative outlet, tracked down the answer.

Dick Armey had no idea he was speaking to the left-wing Media Matters organization during an interview last week, he told The Daily Caller Tuesday. Instead, Armey thought he was chatting with the conservative Media Research Center. [...]

[I]n a Tuesday phone interview with TheDC, Armey insisted that even though [Media Matters blogger Joe Strupp] properly identified himself, it wasn’t until “somebody busted my chops on Facebook” that he realized spoke to a left-wing group…. “That was a major, big screw up on my part. I thought they were somebody else.”

I knew she spent 30 years pursuing her husband’s murderer to make sure that he was brought to justice, but didn’t know that she was Chairperson of the Board of the NAACP during a time of financial stress, and lead the org to health. Really excellent selection.

Repairing Circles: Chicago’s Restorative Justice community Intercepts Youth Funneled Through ‘School-to-Prison Pipeline’

Kelly works toward reconciliation from a faith background, but other restorative justice practitioners apply ethnic tradition to establishing a sense of origin and inclusion for youth.

Tomas Ramirez, an international restorative justice consultant now working in Chicago, leads Native American sweat lodge ceremonies in the backyard of a home in the city’s South Side’s Chicago Lawn neighborhood. A step removed from the traditional tactics of peacemaking circles, which have been officially incorporated into some Chicago public schools, this type of ceremony aims to simulate social cohesiveness for young people who have been denied it all their lives.

Obama aide presses Republicans to accept more tax revenues
    By Jason Lange
    WASHINGTON | Wed Jan 9, 2013 6:04am EST

(Reuters) – The U.S. Congress should accept in the next round of deficit-reduction talks that revenue from taxes must be raised further if it expects President Barack Obama to sign off on a deal, the president’s top economic adviser, Gene Sperling, said in an interview.

The White House and Congress are trying to reach an agreement that would delay planned austerity measures and keep funding the government, while at the same time cutting the budget deficit over the long term.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has ruled out raising revenues as part of any deal, but Sperling said a significant chunk must come from higher taxes.

“The president is not suggesting that in this next round of deficit reduction it all be on revenues,” Sperling said in an interview taped on Tuesday with Reuters TV’s “Impact Players.”

“He’s just suggesting that we continue to do it in a balanced way so that our overall agreement really is about two dollars in spending cuts for every dollar in revenue.”

So Chris Hayes and Adam Serwer are co-signing the latest NY Times article that tries to depict PBO’s administration as lacking gender diversity:

    Christopher Hayes ‏@chrislhayes
@eddie8374 @EricBoehlert President’s inner circle is very very male, and I think that’s a bad thing

    Christopher Hayes ‏@chrislhayes
I honestly don’t think I’ve ever in my professional life been in a meeting w/ 10 men and no women.

    AdamSerwer ‏@AdamSerwer
@EricBoehlert actually you’re spinning a larger proportion of male appointees as not bad because it’s better than Bush.

    AdamSerwer ‏@AdamSerwer
@EricBoehlert actually the NYT reported a fact, and you’re the one spinning it.
    —————————————————————————–

I guess these two forgot about Valerie Jarrett, Stef “La Blade” Cutter, FLOTUS and PBO’s SPECIAL ASSISTANT, Samantha Power — all members of PBO’s inner circle.

    • GN

SMDH; they live to bitch at President Obama, just live for it. Because as Chris Hayes admitted, criticizing is cheaper than researching investigative stories and actually being about shit. So they sit on tv and online relentlessly tearing down what someone else is doing. And have the nerve to accuse others of “spin.”

    • MsKitty

There’s no reasoning with people who are willfully ignorant. They live in their little bubble and if the facts don’t square with their “reality” they choose to talk around it and ignore it. It is what it is.

For all their talk about how the Right Wing media is non-reality based, much of the progressive media is a mirror image.

      • GN

Just like the far right, they believe what they want to believe, truth and facts don’t matter. Thus, in the world of the fact-free, the POTUS responsible for back to back nominations of women to the Supreme Court has issues with sexual diversity.

    • Rhoda

That artical was a hit job and it purposefully used that photo to hit the President when the FACTS don’t:

FACT: Valerie Jarrett is sitting next to POTUS in a chair. The only one seated in the meeting other than POTUS, which is a power position. A fact the NYTimes glosses over by saying, hey do you see her leg…ha, ha, ha…

FACT: POTUS has the same % of women working for him as Clinton did in his administration.

FACT: The number of qualified women in the pipeline is a real issue and indicates a barrier to hiring qualified women; because of women’s family life issues they can not work the insane hours it takes to be a White House adviser until they finish raising their families.

FACT: Anna Marie-Slaughter wrote a huge story about this in the Atlantic; about how women can’t have it all and it caused a huge uproar. But it’s true; you can not work 12 hour days, seven days a week, and have a work-life family balance. There is a reason that staff turns over two to four years at the White House; these men and women would LOSE their spouses they stayed eight years.

Instead of talking about how to create a path to keep women in the workforce (perhaps working P/T) while they raise their families and then allowing them to kick it back into full time gear when their kids have left the nest or are more independent; the Times wastes space on a specious attack on POTUS.

      Figures.

      • GN

Excellent, excellent comment. Considering the high productivity and income levels in numerous other countries which place more of a priority on well-balanced work/personal lives, I really think that the issue has more to do with culture and attitudes than anything else.

    • TresL

Isn’t it ironic that the very white-male dominated media who gave a platform to people like McCain and Graham to slander Susan Rice to the point where she withdrew herself from consideration are now bemoaning the “lack of diversity” in PBO’s administration. Also, with the exception of Kerry you just have white men replacing other white men.

I swear if PBO came out in favor of clean water and fresh air these racist motherf@ckers would oppose that too.

      • nellcote

You also have to wonder how many women want to put up with their families being slandered, hate mail and death threats for a job with a moderate degree of status and that doesn’t pay all that well compared with the private sector.

        • TresL

I think for women or any minority group it takes time to develop as many qualified and willing applicants as there are among white men because of centuries of discrimination against anyone who is not white and male. However, as I mentioned above everyone except Kerry was a white male replacing another white male which to me means this is a non-issue. Just imagine if PBO had replaced all the departing white men with women or people of color then he’d be accused of having a bias against white males.

It’s abundantly clear that he is going to be unfairly attacked whether he’s coming or going which is why he ignores that crowd and why they should not be surprised that he has no time for them.

    • Kennymack1971

Typical emo BS. Because with the GOP acting a fool everywhere especially on women’s issues it’s really important for the left to go after the President who signed Lilly Ledbetter and appointed Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. The left stays losing all day every day.

    • Admiral_Komack

I’ve been to the New York Times:

      Terry ConnellyPalo Alto, CA
“Name any previous President who used his first two appointments to the United States Supreme Court to appoint two women! Why did you leave this fact out?”

-Because they couldn’t use it in their hit job on the President of the United States.
President Obama nominated Susan Rice for the Secretary of State job, but thanks to the Republicans and their lies (which the MSM were only so happy to push), she withdrew her name.
I trust President Obama’s judgement far more than the reporting of the New York Times.

      • TresL

Actually he had not nominated Rice but it was believed she and Kerry were both being considered. So, we really don’t know if she would have been his choice but the attacks and her subsequent withdrawal rendered the possibility moot.

Editor Mends Black Relations, Rebrands Africa Through New Magazine

As a 12-year-old girl emigrating to America from Ghana, Sandra Appiah’s (pictured) background was certainly vulnerable to xenophobia.
And when she began high school, such attacks did come her way. But not from whom one might expect.

“A lot of the comments I was receiving was from African Americans or a lot of the discrimination [came] from African Americans,” the 23-year-old noted about her teenage years in the Bronx.
“Every time we did something wrong, it was, ‘Oh, go back to Africa,’ or, ‘Oh, go back to the jungle.’ ‘You’re an African booty scratcher,’ or, ‘You stink,’ or, ‘You live in trees,’ or things like that. I had no idea where these ideas were coming from, because I remember in Africa I was a very happy child growing up.”

“But for some reason here, these African-American kids think I play with animals and I wasn’t sure where these ideas were coming from. It came to the point where I would tell people, ‘You know, I’m not an African.’ I’d tell people my mom is White and my dad is Black because I’m very light-skinned.” Eventually, Appiah discovered the reason for all the animosity from people she shared skin colors with.

“CNN, PBS, all these documentaries, this is how they portray Africa,” Appiah continues. “So in their [African-Americans'] mind-set, this is the only way they know Africa to be.”

GOP lawmaker to offer amendments to scale back Sandy relief bill – –

    — – -GOP Rep. Tom McClintock (Calif.) is planning to offer proposals to whittle down the size of the $50.7 billion Hurricane Sandy relief package being considered next week in the House, and says other Republicans will do the same.

“I expect there will be an effort to amend out unrelated appropriations,” McClintock said in an interview with The Hill. McClintock said he is looking at offering more than one amendment to the package.

McClintock is one of 67 Republicans who voted against last week’s $9.7 billion Sandy relief bill, which let the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) go deeper into debt to pay off Sandy-related claims. McClintock said he opposed expanding the debt of a program that has proven itself to be actuarially unsound.

    — -Next week, he and other Republicans are expected to argue that the $50.7 billion package can be trimmed by eliminating all spending not directly related to helping people cope with the damage done by Sandy.

“These disaster bills are becoming pork spending,” he said. “There’s lots of spending in these bills that has nothing to do with the disaster.”

I just posted a similar comment on TPV. I live in CT, we have inner cities. In fact there is one not too far from Newtown. I also work in the school system and my visualization ability which is high was on overdrive after the massacre. BUT I know damned well, the outcry (which never ends here) would have faded weeks ago if this were a black school. I am certain of it.

I once asked my kids to do some free writing about what they did after school. They had fun – outdoor athletic kids, indoor video game junkies. But one AA boy (my friend) just stared into space. I called him over. “What’s up?” “I just stare out the window. I’m not allowed to go outside.” “Why?” “Because of the guns shooting on our street.” (epilogue. We became close and I “followed” him for years. He got into a magnet MS and was doing great last I knew. He came back to visit me and I’m just a Sub, brag, brag :) Anyway, if you got into politics, kiddo, and are on this blog, love you, Mrs C.)

Maybe not as “hard going” as you might wish. I’ve been on several sites (not RWNJ) where shootzenfiggers dominated the site, dripping bile on Gabby & Mark for visiting Newtown families & taking up the issue of gun control. Nobody really pushed back. A few feeble voices were shut down fast.

I’m not sweet. My words can be harsh & when I took out a bunch of the slavering slime on one blog, I got banned.

I stand with Gabby & Mark! I’ve already joined their web site. This will be a vicious fight against the NRA $$$$$$$$$$ & the nutbucket shootzenfiggers who see themselves as Rambos preparing for the liberal zombie apocalypse.

I won’t give up! FUCK all these crazies & the evil NRA they rode in on!

        • conlakappa

Right. I mean beyond the “they oppose guns [and we know they don't because they are gun owners] therefore they are evil” circular criticism. That’s not tearing down–it’s being oppositional. The right usually looks to attack from many fronts.

I was sort of shocked to see Gen. McCrystal come out against military type weapons on the streets on Morning Joe yesterday.

        • Aquagranny911

Every word he said was the truth. The weapons & ammo he described have no other purpose but to kill as many people as possible.

BTW, I shredded a guy yesterday who claimed he used one of those assault rifles for dear hunting. I’m a western woman who grew up with meat hunters & have many in my familia who served or are serving in the military. Don’t try to “tread on me!”

I totally shut him down when a few more brave souls started chiming in with “instant ground meat” comments.

    — -Robert Griffin III to have surgery on torn right knee ligament – –

    — –Robert Griffin III is having surgery Wednesday on a torn ligament in his right knee — and to see if there’s a second ligament that also needs to be repaired.

Baylor coach Art Briles confirmed to USA Today and The Associated Press on Tuesday night that the Washington Redskins rookie has a torn lateral collateral ligament. He said the surgery also will determine whether Griffin has damaged the ACL in that knee.

A person close to Griffin, speaking on condition of anonymity because the Redskins have not made an announcement, also confirmed the details surrounding Griffin’s injury to the AP.

A torn LCL requires a rehabilitation period of several months, possibly extending into training camp and the start of next season. A torn ACL is a more severe injury, typically requiring nine to 12 months of recovery, although Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson make a remarkable return this season some eight months after tearing an ACL — and nearly broke the NFL’s single-season rushing record.

—Ohhhh — ->Griffin tore his ACL in the same knee while playing for Baylor in the third game of the 2009 season and missed the rest of the year. He was injured on the opening drive against Northwestern State but kept playing until halftime.

Inauguration Lineup Includes Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, James Taylor

In addition to the political crowd-planning that’s part of the pomp and circumstance of a presidential inauguration, three musical stars will join the swearing-in ceremony in a couple weeks.

George Clinton Forced to Give Up Four Songs to Pay Lawyer’s Bills

Whenever Funkadelic’s One Nation Under a Groove is played, the residuals will no longer go to George Clinton. They will now go to Clinton’s lawyers to help repay past due bills.

The settlement with the Hendricks & Lewis law firm includes Groove and three other songs (Hardcore Jollies, The Electric Spanking of War Babies, Uncle Jam Wants You) for fees that Clinton accumulated between 2005 and 2008. Hendricks & Lewis successfully sued in 2010 for the money and George had managed to pay back $340,000 but that wasn’t enough so a federal judge ordered the songs to be turned over.

According to TMZ, the law firm may now sell or license the music as it deems fit to get the remaining money. When the past due amount is paid, the ownership of the songs will revert to Clinton.

    WDAS Axes Michael Baisden Show
Michael Baisden Commentary: Goodbye WDAS and Philadelphia!

Michael Baisden’s show has been canceled at WDAS, here is his letter to fans from the market.

To my listeners on WDAS in Philadelphia, when you turn on your radios today at 3pm ET you will no longer hear the Michael Baisden Show. The powers that be at Clear Channel have decided that music is enough in the afternoon to achieve their ratings goals. Although we were consistently in the top 5, and beating our nearest Urban Adult competitor by 10 positions, the decision was made to remove The Michael Baisden Show. While I am excited about adding Columbus, OH, last week, and I appreciate my other 78 affiliates, there seems to be a disturbing trend in urban radio to opt to give the black community less information about what’s going on in our community, even when my program is competitive, and in some cases winning in it’s time slot.

    MORE: http://www.radiofacts.com/wdas-axes-michael-baisden-show/

    • Alma98

They’ve been getting black radio for awhile now we haven’t had TJMS here for years. I think they’re cutting off black America’s connection to what’s going on politically on purpose.

      • Miranda

Indeed…the TJMS, Steve Harvey, Rickey Smiley and Baisden aren’t even political shows, by no means, but during the run up to the elections – they are hardcore Obama supporters and have the power of FM radio and millions of listeners at their disposal….for this sin, they must pay.

Watch, their syndicated shows will lose a lot more stations in the next 2 years….right before 2014.

    • MsKitty

Yep. When I got in the car the other night and heard a female DJ instead of Baisden I knew what was up.

I think the ratings excuse is a smokescreen. PA is one of the states trying to enact voter suppression, er, identification laws and I think a big reason why they were unsuccessful in enacting the law for the 2012 presidential election is because liberal and minority communities were able to galvanize, due in part to shows like TJMS and MB who brought it to light. And let’s not forget that Clear Channel is a HUGE supporter of right wing causes. By dropping Baisden’s show, that’s one less voice to keep our community informed.

It’s sad what WDAS has become. Going back to the ’70s they were the benchmark of Black radio in Philly, but Clear Channel has gutted it beyond recognition. On the other hand, Radio One has 3 stations in the Philly market so there is still a strong presence in keeping Black listeners informed.

It’s flexing. All sides [and both of McConnell's faces] will have amnesia come primary season. Unless there’s another Paul child living there, I don’t know if the Kentucky party has someone waiting in the wings.

    – – -Lawmakers, Officials Rip AIG’s Bailout Lawsuit: ‘Outrageous,’ ‘Chutzpah,’ ‘A Giant Middle Finger’

    — – –Insurance giant AIG is considering suing the federal government over the “onerous” terms of its $182 billion federal bailout, even as it airs a slew of “Thank You America” ads supposedly expressing gratitude towards taxpayers. Former AIG chairman Maurice Greenberg is urging the company to join a lawsuit against the government, arguing that the company’s shareholders were “crushed” by the bailout.

The reaction amongst lawmakers and economic policy officials has been swift and, for the most part, incredulous:

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said “It would be outrageous for this company to turn around and sue the federal government because they think the deal wasn’t generous enough… AIG should thank American taxpayers for their help, not bite the hand that fed them for helping them out in a crisis.”

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner are reportedly “furious” with the company.

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), the new ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, said, “It is simply outrageous that the board of the American International Group, Inc. (AIG) would even consider suing the federal government after America’s taxpayers stepped up and bailed them out over their bad bets on mortgage-backed securities…I would urge the board to drop its consideration of the lawsuit, thank the American public for the $182 billion rescue package that prevented the company’s collapse, and support the reforms in the Dodd–Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.” – – – [WHERE have U been??]

I usually just read here- mostly because others say what I might say better than I do… but I had to sign in to salute Ashanti Johnson and this week’s series.
Though I never followed through with my interests academically, I love reading about oceanography, marine biology and geology. I know from the experiences of people close to me how hard it is to get ahead in professions with very few Black people in leadership positions.
    And, Happy New Year, Everybody!

I don’t know your age, your experiences or your life circumstances but I do believe in following your dreams even if they go in ways you might not imagine.

I hope you find that way, however it takes you.

      • BoomerGal

        Ditto, AG.

      • sagenotsweet

Thanks, AG. I agree with you here, and in your take on things political in almost all of your other comments.

I have two grown children but no grandchildren yet.

My dreams probably would have never led me to where I am now but I am still pretty content with my life most days.
If I can give myself a pat on the back, I think that I have been a good influence on younger ones in my own family and in the classroom.

(I was blindyone on DK and wrote about myself too many times to mention…)

        • Aquagranny911

Thank you for the kind comment. I hope you see this I went to bed before I saw yours last night.

IMO, raising good children is the most important job we do. Teaching is a powerful way to reach & help even more. I have found that as we age we can go back & fulfill some of the dreams of our youth but maybe just not in exactly the same ways we might have envisioned.

My four children are moving faster into their 40’s than I can keep up, lol but being a Granny is the best thing ever! I wish this blessing for you also ♥

I had a great holiday this year. Both of my kids (and their sweethearts) were here at the same time which is a rare treat for old Mom and Dad.
Hope you enjoyed your holiday season too. :)

This was supposed to be my reply to GLH further down in this thread. I tried to delete and repost. I tried to edit in order to delete. Then, I was going to repost.

I give up. Disqus wants my comment on top of the thread, and Disqus will not be defeated, apparently.
