Wednesday Open Thread: Anansi The Spider Tales

We continue our series on Anansi the Spider Tales

Anansi and the Ear of Corn

Anansi was one of God’s chosen, and he lived in human form before he became a spider. One day he asked God for a simple ear of corn, promising that he would repay God with one hundred servants. God was always amused by the boastful and resourceful Anansi, and gave him the ear of corn.

Anansi set out with the ear and came to a African village to rest. He told the chief of the village that he had a sacred ear of corn from God and needed both a place to sleep for the night and a safe place to keep the treasure. The chief treated Anansi as an honored guest and gave him a thatched-roof house to stay in, showing him a hiding place in the roof. During the night, while the entire village was fast asleep, Anansi took the corn and fed it to the chickens.

The next morning Anansi woke the village with his cries. “What happened to the sacred corn? Who stole it? Certainly God will bring great punishment on this village!” He made such a fuss that the villagers begged him to take a whole bushel of corn as a demonstration of their apologies. He then set down the road with the bushel of corn until it grew too heavy for him to carry. He then met a man on the road who had a chicken, and Anansi exchanged the corn for the chicken.

When Anansi arrived at the next village, he asked for a place to stay and a safe place to keep the “sacred” chicken. In this new village, Anansi was again treated as an honored guest, a great feast was held in his honor, and he was shown a house to stay in and given a safe place for the chicken. During the night Anansi butchered the chicken and smeared its blood and feathers on the door of the chief’s house. In the morning he woke everyone with his cries, “The sacred chicken has been killed! Surely God will destroy this village for allowing this to happen!” The frightened villagers begged Anansi to take ten of their finest sheep as a token of their sincere apology.

Anansi drove the sheep down the road until he came to a group of men carrying a corpse. He asked the men whose body they were carrying. The men answered that a traveller had died in their village and they were bearing the body home for a proper burial. Anansi then exchanged the sheep for the corpse and set out down the road. At the next village, Anansi told the people that the corpse was a son of God who was sleeping. He told them to be very quiet in order not to wake this important guest. The people in this village, too, held a great feast and treated Anansi as royalty.

When morning came, Anansi told the villagers that he was having a hard time waking the “son of God” from sleep, and he asked their help. They started by beating drums, and the visitor remained asleep.” Then they banged pots and pans, but he was still “asleep.” Then the villagers pounded on the visitor’s chest, and he still didn’t stir.

All of a sudden, Anansi cried out, “You have killed him! You have killed a son of God! Oh, no! Certainly God will destroy this whole village, if not the entire world!” The terrified villagers then told Anansi that he could pick one hundred of their finest young men as slaves if only he would appeal to God to save them.

So Anansi returned to God, having turned one ear of corn into one hundred slaves.

This is an opportunity for those who tweet to create a hashtag of PBO’s many accomplishments. I would say #WorstPresidentEver but I don’t like to perpetuate the negativity. I don’t tweet but for those who do, I’m sure someone could come up with something clever and catchy and everyone can join in and get it to trend.

This is also an opportunity for an “honest” journalist, host or pundit to push back with the great facts about PBO’s presidency because I’m 50 years old and since I’ve been paying attention, he is by far the best president of my lifetime. I think Nixon was the first president I was consciously aware of as a child. PBO is obviously better than that crook. He’s better than Ford, Carter, that dolt Reagan, Bush, Clinton and light years better than W.

      • I think that hashtag is a good idea. Flip it on it’s head although I understand your point about the negativity.

If any of those Presidents had done only a quarter of what PBO accomplished then every other bridge, highway and office building would be named after them let alone a place on Mt Rushmore.

    • Then they really would have blamed him.

Newest Pa. gubernatorial poll shows Tom Wolf gaining steam in Tom Corbett’s deficit

The campaign to re-elect Gov. Tom Corbett has another ugly picture to hang on the wall, after a poll released Wednesday painted the latest dismal portrait of voter sentiment for the incumbent Republican.

This Franklin & Marshall College survey of registered voters is the most recent in a series of post-primary polls, showing the governor with low job approval and lagging behind his Democratic challenger, York County businessman Tom Wolf

Only 26 percent of voters polled said Corbett deserves a second term. And if the general election had been held the day pollsters interviewed the 502 respondents, Corbett would’ve lost the election with 25 percent of the vote to Wolf’s 47 percent. The group of undecided voters — 27 percent — exceeded Corbett’s take of the crowd.

10 cities with the most millionaires per household
    By Stacy Rapacon of Kiplinger

That New York City is home to the most millionaires in the U.S. probably doesn’t come as a shock. More surprising is the fact that the place with the highest concentration of millionaires as a percentage of households is not the Big Apple but rather a tiny town in New Mexico.

Only about 5 percent of the country, or 6.1 million households, qualify as true millionaires. That is, they boast liquid, investable assets of $1 million or more, excluding real estate, employer-sponsored retirement plans and business partnerships. Research firm Phoenix Marketing International identifies where these millionaires live in an annual survey of wealthy residents in 942 urban areas. We’ve also researched the typical incomes and home values in the top ten cities, in case you’re interested in living next door to one of these millionaires.

SCOTUS: Ruling Applies Broadly To Contraception Coverage

    AP – July 1, 2014, 12:03 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court on Tuesday confirmed that its decision a day earlier extending religious rights to closely held corporations applies broadly to the contraceptive coverage requirement in the new health care law, not just the handful of methods the justices considered in their ruling.

The justices did not comment in leaving in place lower court rulings in favor of businesses that object to covering all 20 methods of government-approved contraception.

Oklahoma-based Hobby Lobby Inc. and a Pennsylvania furniture maker won their court challenges Monday in which they refused to pay for two emergency contraceptive pills and two intrauterine devices.

Tuesday’s orders apply to companies owned by Catholics who oppose all contraception. Cases involving Colorado-based Hercules Industries Inc., Illinois-based Korte & Luitjohan Contractors Inc. and Indiana-based Grote Industries Inc. were awaiting action pending resolution of the Hobby Lobby case.

They are among roughly 50 lawsuits from profit-seeking corporations that object to the contraceptive coverage requirement in their health plans for employees. Contraception is among a range of preventive services that must be included in the health plans, at no extra cost to workers.

The justices also ordered lower courts that ruled in favor of the Obama administration to reconsider thosedecisions in light of Monday’s 5-4 decision.

Two Michigan-based companies, Autocam Corp. and Eden Foods Inc., both lost their cases in the lower courts. The justices ordered the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to reconsider its decisions against the companies.

John Boehner Thanks Bill Clinton For Birth Control Ruling

    Sahil Kapur – July 1, 2014, 3:57 PM EDT

Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) would like to thank President Bill Clinton for making the Supreme Court’s ruling against the birth control mandate possible.

Retweet to thank Pres Bill Clinton for signing into law the 1993 Religious Freedom Restoration Act, upheld by #SupremeCourt. #HobbyLobby
    11:28 AM – 1 Jul 2014

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act, or RFRA, was passed by a Democratic Congress and signed into law by Clinton, in response to a 1990 Supreme Court ruling which said the First Amendment does not allow for religious exemptions to generally applicable laws. RFRA imposes strict scrutiny standards for laws that burden a person’s exercise of religion.

The Supreme Court relied on RFRA to rule against the contraception requirement on Monday. Numerous Democrats who support the birth control rule and voted for RFRA have said they didn’t intend for the law to apply to for-profit corporations.

Fox Host: Hobby Lobby Decision Sends ‘Shrieking’ Feminists Into ‘Hysterics’ (VIDEO)

    Catherine Thompson – July 2, 2014, 8:17 AM EDT

Fox News host Greg Gutfeld had some choice words Tuesday for women who opposed the Supreme Court’s ruling against the Obamacare contraception mandate.

During a discussion of the Hobby Lobby decision on “The Five,” Gutfeld argued that the Supreme Court did not violate women’s rights when it ruled that closely held corporations could refuse to cover certain contraceptives because of their religious beliefs. He attempted to draw a comparison to First Amendment rights, arguing that Fox News doesn’t infringe on his free speech by forbidding him to swear on air.

Gutfeld then launched a condescending attack on “feminist bloggers” in particular, accusing them of overblowing the ruling and spreading misinformation about the decision.

“No grace involved in this, just shrieking,” he said. “And it’s because for a lot of these women who are activists, screaming is what they majored in. Campuses provide degrees in grievance.”

“Women have fought the stigma of fragile, emotional behavior for decades. For being accused of not being able to handle things,” he added. “This hysteria by feminists has set back their cause by decades. They are truly resembling hysterics over a lot of this stuff, and they’re being dishonest to other women.”

“It’s gone from ‘I am woman, hear me roar,’ to ‘I am woman, hear me beg for Plan B,'” co-host Andrea Tantaros chimed in. “Doesn’t it come down to just that conservative women, or women who agree with this court decision, are just stronger women than liberal women? I don’t need a government or a boss or anyone to pay for my birth control.”

    • nellcote

Target requests customers don’t bring firearms into stores in ‘open carry’ states staff | @CNBC 25 Mins Ago

Target’s interim CEO John Mulligan sent out a note to the company’s employees to address the issue of the retailer’s policy on the “open carry” of firearms in stores, according to the company’s blog

“[T]here has been a debate about whether guests in communities that permit ‘open carry’ should be allowed to bring firearms into Target stores, he wrote. “[S]tarting today we will also respectfully request that guests not bring firearms to Target—even in communities where it is permitted by law.”

Individual states allow residents to carry concealed handguns with varying restrictions and permit requirements.

Mulligan said in the note that bringing firearms to Target “creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create.”

First day of new gun law leads to arrest
The Valdosta Daily Times July 1, 2014

VALDOSTA — On the first day of the new Georgia Safe Carry Protection Act, a misunderstanding between two armed men in a convenience store Tuesday led to a drawn firearm and a man’s arrest.

“Essentially, it involved one customer with a gun on his hip when a second customer entered with a gun on his hip,” said Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress.

At approximately 3 p.m. Tuesday, police responded to a call regarding a customer dispute at the Enmark on the corner of Park Avenue and North Lee Street.

A man carrying a holstered firearm entered the store to make a purchase. Another customer, also with a holstered firearm, approached him and demanded to see his identification and firearms license, according to the Valdosta Police Department report.

‘Hot Mug Shot’ Felon Signs With Agent For Modeling Contract

The felon whose mug shot earned him hordes of admirers has secured a Hollywood agent who is negotiating modeling contracts even though he is still in jail.

Jeremy Meeks was arrested as part of a sweep of gangs in Stockton, California, and faces a felony weapons charge.
His mug shot went viral after being posted by the police department’s Facebook page and has now apparently caught the attention of an agent.

Gina Rodriguez has signed Meeks, 30, as a client and he joins a roster of her other notorious celebrities.
Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham, Donald Sterling’s alleged former mistress V. Stiviano and ‘Octomom’ Nadya Suleman are among Rodriguez’s other clients.
“Jeremy has an amazing look and has received international attention which I feel can only help him flourish in the entertainment industry,” Rodriguez told ABC News.
Though they have not formally set up any contracts with modeling agencies or other prospective employers, Rodriguez has high hopes.
“Jeremy could make somewhere between $3,000 to $100,000 per month through endorsements and modeling. We are also speaking with several production companies about following Jeremy’s foray into the entertainment industry,” she said.

While Rodriguez said she is in talks with Jim Jordan, who owns modeling agency White Cross Management, company spokeswoman Mikaela Morton told ABC that “It all depends on everything, but as of now we’re not representing him.”
Meeks is being held on 11 felony counts that include street gang membership and the possession of firearms, but Rodriguez does not believe that his criminal past will hinder his career prospects.
“I believe this can be a positive change for Jeremy and his family,” she said.
One clear step that is preventing any immediate action is the fact that Meeks remains behind bars on $1.1 million bail.
A woman claiming to be Meeks’ mother has launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money to pay for his release.
In the description, she insisted that he has no gang affiliations in spite of the charges filed against him.
“He has old tattoos…which causes him to be stereotyped. He’s my son and I’m just trying to raise funds to help him in any way. Please help him to get a fair trial or else he’ll be railroaded,” his mother Katherine Angier wrote.
So far, they have raised just over $5,000.

The desperation is real in the Village. They’re so shook they had to manufacture a poll saying that the Black guy was the worst President since World War II…seriously like Nixon and Dubya never happened. These 2520s confidence is shot.

    — –Plouffe joins Obama board

    – — — –President Obama’s former campaign manager and his half-sister have joined the board of directors of the organization tasked with fundraising and constructing his presidential library, the Barack Obama Foundation announced on Wednesday.

David Plouffe, who managed Obama’s 2008 campaign and later served as a senior presidential adviser, and Maya Soetoro-Ng, Obama’s younger, maternal half-sister will join Chicago businessman Marty Nesbitt and Kevin Poorman, a businessman with close ties to Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker, in running the foundation.

Former Deputy Campaign Manager Julianna Smoot, an inaugural member of the board, will “shift roles,” the foundation said, working instead as the fundraising director for the presidential library.

“There are few people who know the president’s life and vision better than the individuals joining our Foundation team today,” Nesbitt said in a statement. “President Obama deeply trusts their advice, judgment, and expertise, and we are confident that his future Presidential Library will be stronger for their input.”

The foundation is sorting through thirteen bids to host the presidential library. The group is expected to narrow that initial group into a list for consideration by the president and first lady.

Is A Republican Campaign Group Copying Fundraising Emails From Democrats?

The campaign arm of the Senate Republicans has sent a series of fund-raising emails that appear to have language lifted from messages sent by the campaign arm of the House Democrats.

In at least three emails to supporters in the last week, the National Republican Senatorial Committee closely mirrored the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, borrowing phrases, framing, and even the font color on key words.

Reached for comment, NRSC spokesman Brad Dayspring dismissed any similarities.

“The copy and subject matter of the emails is entirely different, but one could certainly make the case that they parody the hyperbolic and sensationalistic language used by the left; or as the kids these days are calling it, ‘trolling,'” Dayspring wrote in an email.

For its part, the DCCC said “imitation” in the emails serve as praise for their own online fund-raising success.

“They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery,” DCCC spokesman Josh Schwerin told Business Insider, “so we’ll just take this as a compliment.”

America’s Evolving Look: Census Shows White Deaths Outpace Births
By Katherine Peralta June 30, 2014

For the second year in a row, the number of non-Hispanic white deaths in 2013 outweighed the number of white births, signaling an increasingly older and diversified American public. It is a trend that’s likely to continue for a while, as traditionally minority groups become the majority of the U.S. population.

As a result of its slower growth rate, compared with other groups, the number of non-Hispanic white individuals declined to 62.6 percent of the total overall population in 2013 from 63 percent in 2012, according to recent figures from the Census Bureau.

“As we move forward we’re probably going to continue to have a natural decrease of whites because it’s an older population and eventually, maybe in 10 years or so, we’ll have a decline in the white population,” says William Frey, a demographer and senior fellow at the Metropolitan Policy Program at the Brookings Institution in Washington. “That’s a scenario I think we’ll see for a while.”

They sound like professors explaining Dr. Frances Cress-Welsing’s theories. It’d be pathetic if white fear wasn’t so dangerous to others health.

Tension Mounts After Apparent Revenge Killing in Jerusalem
    JULY 2, 2014

JERUSALEM — The body of an abducted Arab teenager was found in a Jerusalem forest early Wednesday, fanning outrage among Palestinians and threatening to further escalate the broader tensions in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The death appeared to be an Israeli revenge killing for the kidnap and killing of three Israeli teenagers in the occupied West Bank last month.

The father of the abducted youth, Muhammad Hussein Abu Khdeir, 16, said the police had identified the body through DNA tests.

The discovery of the body came about an hour after Palestinians said an Arab teenager had been forced into a car in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Hanina. Micky Rosenfeld, a police spokesman, said the police had erected roadblocks in the area to locate the vehicle. The body was discovered shortly afterward in a forest near the entrance to Jerusalem. Mr. Rosenfeld said the police were investigating both criminal and nationalistic motives for the killing.
