Wednesday Open Thread: Black Burlesque and Vaudeville Perfomers

Doea Dean

Dora Dean was born in Covington in 1872, and got into show business as the “Black Venus.”  She was born as Dora Babbige; Dean was evidently her stage name.  Her initial job in show business was as a “statute girl” – essentially striking dramatic poses and looking pretty.  She eventually took on a partner, a tap dancer named Charles E. Johnson, and together they became a major act.  They took an obscure dance from the south, The Cakewalk, and popularized it in America.  They toured an African American Tour circuit with The Creole Show, but eventually joined a White circuit, The Orpheum Circuit, one of the few Black acts to do so.

Johnson and Dean were a song and dance act, but unlike most such Black acts, they avoided self deprecation and ragged clothes in favor of elegance sophistication, and dignity. They appeared in full formal evening wear.  They were one of the first acts to make use of a strobe light, and Johnson was one of the very first dancers to put meat taps on his shows.  Neither Johnson nor Dean actually sang, but “talked” their songs.  Dean was famous not for her singing nor her dancing, but for being able to communicate warmth and personal charm from whatever she did on stage.

Johnson & Dean were the most famous cakewalk artists at the turn of the century. They claimed to have introduced that high kicking dance to Broadway in 1895. Four years earlier, Dora Dean, along with her partner and future husband, Charles E. Johnson, got their start in Sam T Jack’s Creole Company. This was the first African-American show to break from the strict minstrel tradition of all male performers and allow women on stage as performers. Dora Dean’s first job on stage was to pose as a statue. Johnson eventually became the company’s leading man after starting as singer and banjo player. Bob Cole was also a member of this troupe.

In 1893, Johnson and Dean got married and left the Creole Company. Soon after, they put together an act for the Chicago World’s Fair that was described as eccentric dancing. Later, after joining the vaudeville circuit, they became known as the King and Queen of Colored Aristocracy.Twice during these years they played from coast to coast, doing 52 weeks of continuous business. In 1901, they traveled to Berlin, Germany, where Dean was asked to sit for a life-size painting by Ernest Hellman, then one of Germany’s foremost artists. During this tour they also entertained in England and France, bringing the cakewalk and “coon” songs to the Continent.

After returning to the United States they began to bill themsleves as the Colored Fashion Plates. At this time, they were described as “the best entertainers of their race”, giving the Broadway duo of Williams & Walker serious competition. In 1904, Johnson & Dean traveled back to London where they topped the bill at the Palace Theatre. During what eventually became a seven year tour, they performed in Austria and Hungary as well as in Germany, France, and Russia. When they returned to the U.S. in 1909 they incorporated some of their favorite overseas material into their act but were criticized by the press for not being black enough. Dora Dean’s diamonds and elegant clothing as well as Johnson’s pantomimes of “foreign” characters were a shock to American reviewers who expected them to be a typical black act of the period. Johnson and Dean continued to perform across the country entertaining enthusiastic crowds wherever they went.

There was a popular song that amplified their fame, that went:

Say have you ever seen Miss Dora Dean
She is the finest girl you have ever seen.
I’m a-goin’ to try and make this girl my queen
Next Sunday morning I’m goin’ to marry Dora Dean.

From 1901 to 1914 they performed almost exclusively in Europe, where they were an even bigger hit than they were in America.  1914, and the World War ended their European tour, and they split professionally.  She went on the act on stage, and did some movies, and in 1930 re-united with Johnson, where he had settled in Hennepin. Minnesota.  She died there on December 13, 1949.

Charles Rangel center sought Donald Trump name
By JONATHAN TOPAZ | 6/18/14 7:38 AM EDT

Donald Trump was reportedly offered naming rights at Rep. Charles
Rangel’s academic center at City College in exchange for millions.

The Democratic congressman and then-City College president Gregory Williams discussed seeking a $10 million donation from the developer to create a Trump Hall at the center, the New York Post reported Tuesday, based on correspondence the paper obtained.

In a followup letter to Trump, Williams wrote: “A gift of $3 million will create the Donald J. Trump Chair at the Rangel Center. … A gift of $2.5 million will establish the Donald J. Trump Leadership Fellowship Program. … A gift of $1 million will fund the Donald J. Trump Visiting Professorship.”

Trump never donated to the Rangel Center, but the Post reports that
he and Rangel have a “good relationship.” Federal Election Commission records show Trump’s family has contributed more than $35,000 to the congressman since the 1990s.

It has been previously reported that Rangel himself wrote to Trump
seeking to arrange a meeting about potential support for the center.

I don’t know how true this is but these guys were on the local chat radio station that you can only hear after 5pm and on a sunny day:

They were talking about Al Sharpton vs. Charlie Rangel. They said Rev. Al is backing some other guy for Rangel’s seat and Rangel asked Al to endorse him.

Al said no, but he wasn’t going to hurt him.

Charlie wanted to know WHY Al wasn’t endorsing him. (besides the obvious fact Al is endorsing somebody else).

Al told Charlie that Charlie didn’t open his mouth for AL when he was running for governor and didn’t open his mouth for AL when he was running for president so AL ain’t opening his mouth for Charlie.

I don’t know how true that is but that’s a story I’d like to share.

      • qosine

In Rev. Al’s book, he talks about his decision to
support then-Sen. Obama, b/c he remembered
when a lot of his presumed allies didn’t back
him (Rev. Al). I don’t know the NY political scene,

Here we go 2010 election redo with media, Hillary and emos aiding..

    1. Drive down poll: unpopular like they did in 2010

    2. Hillary plus emoprogs

    3. Iraq aided by Feinstein

    4. Immigration as wedge issue

Cantor loss hit media and all out assault for next 2 years…need him as unpopular as bush….

White voters don’t give credit especially to a black person, not in their MO since it cuts into their identity..therefore over sample them in polls

    Get out vote for 2014…

    • GOVCHRIS1988

Yeah, its “narrative poll day” in the summertime.

    • TresL

The media/GOP spends every day lying about PBO and then act surprised at the results of their polling. The people in this country are so ignorant, uninformed and misinformed that, at this point, all polling should be questioned regardless of the results. That Jimmy Kimmel episode where only one person out of about twenty knew that the ACA and Obamacare were the same thing really drove the point home for me.

Ideally, pollsters should try to glean if a respondent has a basic understanding of an issue before asking and recording their opinion.

      • jziglar

That’s why this country will never be unified because we have too many ignorant and plain racist people in it. The focus should be on getting close to 50 % support and screw the rest of the country.

        • TresL

ITA! I had a pollster from the U of M Consumer Confidence Survey contact me to answer questions about the economy, politics etc. She asked me if the government was doing enough to address unemployment. I told her the question should be re-written because the President is doing everything he can from the executive branch while Republicans are obstructing his efforts from the legislative branch and because of that I could not answer the question. There were a number of questions like that that did not account for nuance and I refused to answer them. She finally admitted the questions were devised in 1946. I told her they needed to be updated to reflect the changes in this country, particularly the hyper-partisanship of the Repubs.

          • qosine

            In 1946?!!! Great answer, TresL

“I told her the question should be re-written because the President is doing everything he can from the executive branch while Republicans are obstructing his efforts from the legislative branch and because of that I could not answer the question.”

          • AxelFoley

1946? The HELL? Nineteen hundred and forty-six?

My parents weren’t even born then. How the hell you gonna have questions relevant to the first half of the 20th Century for citizens of the early 21st Century?

Ta-Nehisi Coates Calls Out Reparations Critic For Repeating Decade-Old Argument

    Tom Kludt – June 17, 2014, 10:02 AM EDT

Syndicated columnist Walter Williams was accused of self-plagiarism on Monday after he employed nearly identical arguments and language that appeared in his pieces more than a decade ago.

Prompted by Ta-Nehisi Coates’ much-discussed essay, Walter Williams made a case against slavery reparations in a piece published by The Washington Examiner.

“First off, let me say that I agree with reparations advocates that slavery was a horrible, despicable violation of basic human rights,” Williams, a professor of economics at George Mason University, wrote for the Examiner. “The gross discrimination that followed emancipation made a mockery of the guarantees of the U.S. Constitution. I also agree that slave owners and slave traders should make reparations to those whom they enslaved. The problem, of course, is that slaves, slave owners and slave traders are all dead. Thus, punishing perpetrators and compensating victims is out of the hands of the living.”

That sounded familiar to Coates, who called out Williams on Twitter.

I’ve been thinking about this for the last few days. I’m not buying the hype about Hillary. The Clinton Machine does not control shit. They don’t control narratives, they don’t have grand strategies that reach into 2016. All their decisions are based upon conventional wisdom (that the Obama Coalition has destroyed). The Clinton Machine is aligned with the MSM in one key way….they live for the next news cycle.

I’m cutting back on my Hiliary bashing, because it’s a waste of time. She was a paper tiger in 2008 and she’s a paper tiger now. Rant over.

Report Shows Big Gains For Dreamers Under Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals
Posted: 06/17/2014 1:07 pm EDT Updated: 06/17/2014 2:59 pm EDT

Two years after President Barack Obama announced that some undocumented young people could apply to stay and work in the U.S., a new report shows those immigrants have seen big achievements, from obtaining driver’s licenses to getting new jobs.

The National UnDACAmented Research Project survey, published Monday by the American Immigration Council, spoke to more than 2,300 undocumented young people who had received reprieve under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. Through the program, announced in June 2012, young undocumented immigrants who entered the U.S. as children before June 15, 2007 can apply with the federal government to have removal proceedings against them deferred.

The survey found that after receiving their deferrals, nearly 60 percent of those undocumented immigrants — often referred to as Dreamers — were hired for new jobs, and 45 percent reported increased earnings. About 57 percent of those polled had obtained a driver’s license, something undocumented immigrants are unable to do in many states. The report also found that 49 percent of those polled had opened their first bank account.

    It’s education, stupid.

    June 17, 2014 | by Thomas Mills

National pundits are increasingly predicting that Kay Hagan is facing long odds in North Carolina. The most recent prediction comes from Nate Cohn, who apparently has taken over Nate Silver’s prediction business at the New York Times. Cohn believes that Hagan has a 57% chance of losing. He should spend some time in North Carolina.

Most of the national press base their assessments on the national mood. And right now, the national mood is pretty anti-Obama. While North Carolina’s attitude toward the president may be in sync with the rest of the country, its political environment is in a whole different place.

While mid-terms have traditionally been driven by the national narrative, state politics is dominating the Senate race. North Carolina is still undergoing the culture shock of GOP rule in a state that’s been run by Democrats for most of the past hundred years. Bowe Bergdahl and even the collapse of Iraq are background noise compared to the fights going on in the General Assembly, particularly the debate over education.

To fully understand the impact of these battles, you need to understand North Carolina’s relationship to education. It’s a point of state pride that goes back to the beginning of the republic. Every school kid is taught that the University of North Carolina was the first state university and our university system is consistently ranked among the best in the nation. During the Great Depression, the state took over the responsibility for public schools, ensuring even the poorest counties could offer their children an education. And in the midst of the Civil Rights struggle, Gov. Terry Sanford created our community college system, which also ranks among the best in the nation. Education is to North Carolinians what longhorns are to Texans.

It’s that system of education that has made North Carolina a leader in the South and one of the most desirable places to live and work in the nation. And it’s that system of education that Thom Tillis and the GOP decided to attack. They didn’t just cut funding for our public schools, universities, and community colleges. They demonized teachers and threatened to close college campuses. Instead of rising to their defense or trying to temper the most toxic rhetoric, Tillis smugly told us that this is what a conservative revolution looks like.

And it’s with this backdrop that the U.S. Senate race is unfolding. It’s why the EMILY’s List ad and the one by Senate Majority PAC are so effective. They remind us what everybody already knows: Thom Tillis cut public education.

So far, Republicans have failed to come up with a response. Instead, they attack Hagan with tired Obamacare ads and claims that she’s ineffective. So the contrast that the GOP is setting up is the ineffective incumbent who toes the party line verses the Republican leader who did real damage to education in a state where it’s revered and now wants to take his agenda to Washington.

    Good morning POU.

Do Other Countries Really ‘Hate’ Obama as the Right Claims?

[....] Let’s get to the objective truth of who “hates” Barack Obama. My daughter, an International Law Attorney, just returned from The Hague. She was a U.S. delegate to the “Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH).” [....] There are representatives of the most important of the 76 official member countries and an additional 68 signatories to one or more of the Hague conventions. These people don’t need partisan push-polls to accurately read the political tea leaves of their citizenry.

My next observation is anecdotal and not at all scientific, but it’s way closer to the truth than Gallup and their global power-mad running partner, Meridian. Here is my daughter’s assessment of the attendee’s feelings about U.S. President Obama. Quote: “They love him.” No qualifications. Everybody she talked to loved Obama.

Conversely they unanimously expressed something largely ignored
by many of these international polls and certainly on Fox and the talk shows. They all still harbor a deep hatred of George W. Bush.
It’s important to know that my daughter is largely apolitical. I hadn’t even thought to suggest the question of Obama to her before she left. But she’s as close as I’ll get to objective and she’s chocked full of integrity and honesty. She didn’t give me the answer she thought I want ed to hear; she just passed on the truth.

Well, people around the world like PBO, leaders, too respect him; it’s the right wing USA media that everyone can’t stand.

  • MsKitty

Pay special attention to the replies to Ro-Ro’s tweet. This is why I can’t take these Black feminists seriously. Every time he points out they should direct their comments to the Office of Women and Girls they come up with some weak excuse why that’s not an option. Summer Job Outlook Sunnier for Teens as U.S. Market Mends

[....] Teen hiring posted the biggest gain in eight years this May, not
counting for seasonal adjustments. If the nascent job recovery retains
steam through the summer, it could bolster wallets and resumes for U.S.
youth.[....] Sixteen-to 19-year-olds last month gained the most jobs for May since
2006, based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data not adjusted for seasonal
fluctuations. The group added 217,000 jobs, compared with 215,000 the
    prior year. [....]

Cobb said he expects hiring this year to be in line with 2013 levels.
Last year, teens gained about 1.36 million summer jobs, up from 960,000
in 2010, based on the analysis.[....]

    BLOOP!

No, The Poor Aren’t Poor Because They Refuse To Work

In March, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) said that one cause of poverty is a “culture problem” for inner city men: “men not working and just generations of men not even thinking about working or learning the value and the culture of work.” While he backed away from the racially charged ‘inner city’ language, he stood by the idea that we can alleviate poverty if poor people would just work more. That’s a common idea: that the poor just need to work more or work harder to escape their financial situations. But that may not in fact be the case.

In fact, the majority of able- bodied, adult, non-elderly poor people worked in 2012, according to a data analysis by economist Jared Bernstein. There were about 21 million non-disabled, poor adults that year, and about half of them, or 11 million, worked. Another 3 million didn’t work because they were in school. If those in school are taken out of the picture, 57 percent of the poor people we would expect to work did so. Five million didn’t work because they had an illness or disability.[....]

HARRY REID: ‘Being On The Wrong Side Of Dick Cheney Is Being On The Right Side Of History’

Reid argued the U.S. has “had enough” of conflict, and he came out in vehement opposition to sending ground troops to the country. “I do not support in any way putting our men and women in the midst of this civil war in Iraq,” he said. “This is an Iraqi civil war, and it is time for the Iraqis to resolve it themselves.”[....]

Americans Are Dangerously Politically Ignorant — The Numbers Are Shocking

[....] So how bad is America’s political literacy? A 2007 National Constitutional Center poll found that two-thirds of Americans couldn’t name all three branches of the U.S. federal government, nor a single Supreme Court justice. Another poll found that 91 percent couldn’t name the current Chief Justice, which is staggering considering the number of high profile, politically polarizing cases
deliberated upon by the nation’s highest court in recent years –
including the rulings on the Affordable Care Act, same-sex marriage and campaign finance laws. It gets worse.

When respondents were asked whether they could recall any of the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment, a majority could name only free speech. More than a third were unable to list any First Amendment rights. The National Constitution Center also found that 42 percent of Americans think the Constitution explicitly states that “the first language of the United States is English;” and 25 percent believe Christianity was established in the Constitution as the official government religion. Only 40 percent of adults know that there are 100 Senators in the U.S. Congress, while a great majority of Americans have no idea of when or by whom the Constitution was written.[....]

Obama proposes vast expansion of Pacific Ocean sanctuaries for marine life

President Obama announced Tuesday his intent to make a broad swath of the central Pacific Ocean off-limits to fishing, energy exploration and other activities. The proposal, slated to go into effect later this year after a comment period, could create the world’s largest marine sanctuary and double the area of ocean globally that is fully protected.[....]

The president will also direct federal agencies to develop a comprehensive program aimed at combating seafood fraud and the global black-market fish trade. In addition, the administration finalized a rule last week allowing the public to nominate new marine sanctuaries off U.S. coasts and in the Great Lakes.[....]

Why Expanding Medicaid Coverage To Prison Inmates Will Save States Money

[....] Under the expansion, 21 million low-income Americans are now eligible for health insurance — and 35 percent of those people are either current inmates, or currently on parole or probation. The Cook County Jail in Chicago has submitted more than 4,000 applications for its inmates since the start of this year. In the Portland area, over 1,200 inmates are now enrolled. If all states followed suit, over 7.3 million current or former prisoners would have health insurance.

In California, where prisons are some of the most expensive in the
country, it costs around $47,102 a year to house an inmate, and over a quarter of these costs are for health care alone. It costs the state a far lower sum — just $3,558 — to provide an individual with Medicaid. Even in states with lower prison costs, keeping an inmate in jail usually costs tens of thousands of dollars, while the national average cost for states to provide one person with Medicaid is just $5,352.[....]

Ex-con Saves Baby on Side of Road, Plays Gospel to Calm Her

A Georgia man who served ten years for manufacturing cocaine is being credited with saving a 15-month-old baby he found alongside a highway. Bryant Collins, an auto repair man who says he has been free and clean for five years, spotted the girl crawling alongside a Madison County highway, east of Atlanta.

“I had seen something out of the corner of my eye, and I thought it
was a baby,” he said. “I just stopped and, when I got out, there was a
baby…almost in the highway.” Collins waited two hours until authorities concluded their questions, and played gospel music from his iPhone when the baby cried.

    • Tafr

Beautiful story but why did the media need to tell us this man is an ex-convict. Like why is that even relevant to the story, this man served his time. I don’t see one word written about the irresponsible parents. How the hell do you not notice your baby is gone, in the woods, across the highway? I want to know about the parents, what the hell were they doing? Are they going to face charges this is what I want to know.

      • Daltex82

I wondered the same thing. His record was not relevant, he saved this child’s life and rather than give him the thanks he deserves they are running a background check! I hate the media.

        • creolechild

Well, you know how that works…if it hadn’t been disclosed (not saying it was necessary) the usual suspects would have rushed to their computers to find anything they could that was uncomplimentary because he’s a black man. All things considered, I think he handled it well. He said he went to jail for the activities he was involved in and decided that he needed to make a change, which is exactly what he did.

          • Daltex82

He handled it really well creolechild, its just frustrating to know that some of us can’t even do a good deed without opening ourselves up to unnecessary scrutiny.

        • Tafr

Oh ok sorry I did not click the video just read the summary. I’m happy to hear the parents are going to jail.

    Grifters gotta grift part 4,589,257…

Dick and Liz Cheney have joined forces to form a new grassroots group to take on President Obama.

Shortly after the father/daughter duo criticized Obama in an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal, the pair announced Wednesday their 501(c)4 nonprofit group “Alliance For A Strong America.”

With the two Cheneys at the helm, the group will work on “preserving freedom and restoring American strength and power in the wake of the Obama administration’s national security failures.”

In their Journal opinion piece, the pair blamed Obama for the rise of insurgents in Iraq – earning scorn from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

From the Senate floor on Wednesday, Reid said, “if there’s one thing this country does not need, is that we should be taking advice from Dick Cheney on wars.”

New York City Housing Authority May Be the City’s Worst Landlord

[....] Having to go to court to repair your bathroom isn’t the way it’s supposed to work, but that’s the level of desperation that led the tenants of DeWitt Clinton Houses to sue the city earlier this month. The complaint accuses the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) of massive negligence, which has resulted in disrepair that pose a public health risk and represent a systematic indignity against the city’s poorest communities.[....] Superstorm Sandy aggravated the substandard conditions; even now, many households remain scarred by storm damage and broken boilers.[...]

Denise Miranda, head of UJC’s Safety Net Project, says that for many tenants, “Repair dates are given, and they come and go, and no one shows up. Or they’re given a date six, seven, eight, nine months from now, when you’re talking about black mold. Black mold is not a “[wait] nine months, and we’ll come by,’ situation.” As of June 2014, NYCHA reports it is whittling down its backlog, down to around 80,000 from a high of more than 400,000 in early 2013. But the UJC is suing to push the city further toward a comprehensive overhaul, wary that the statistical drop may count cases that were generally addressed, but not necessarily completely fixed.[....]

The de Blasio administration recently launched an ambitious plan to expand affordable housing, but Miranda says that in addition to housing more poor and homeless people, the city must prioritize the maintenance of existing apartments for the city’s most precariously housed.[....]

    Hello POU,
Ogletree singing Hillary’s praises y’all. She WILL be the IDEAL candidate, she MADE Bill Clinton the president, they’re coming after her the same as they did Barack Obama, blah blah. Rev Al’s question is how would she mend the rift between those of us who say we don’t forget how she attacked PBO and her supporters. They can both STFU for what I care. I do not give a damn what anyone cries about, I will NOT vote for her. Whatever will be, will be.

    • itgurl_29

I wonder if Rev. Al has seen her statement calling the charges of racism during the ’08 campaign “preposterous”. She has no intention of mending fences with black folks. She just gaslighted up and called us crazy for knowing what we saw and heard. I don’t give a damn if Barack Obama himself supports her, the bitch ain’t got my vote. Period.

Like I said on twitter, if she’d been half as anti-Semitic as she was anti-Black, there would be no question of what she could do to mend fences because the Democratic party would have BANNDED her ass for running for anything. Her ass wouldn’t even be able to run in a school board election. But attacking black folk is considered fair game and just a means to an end. Fuck that.

      • edp4bho

Now Ogletree says Romney would be a serious candidate for rethugs who are looking for something different than PBO. Now a caller says he doesn’t think anyone could beat HRC as a historic, nobody in the world mind you, we should set an agenda and show her that we are an organized group. Someone, PLEASE, let me out of here- it’s maddening….LOL !

        • AxelFoley

This is why black folks stay losing.

Another caller asked Rev Al what he thought about HRC attending some private meeting…Rev Al retorting, rightfully so without specifics, but in a voice which leads me to believe that Rev IS a supporter. Now a caller saying it is redundant to hear the names Clinton and Bush. He hit the nail on the head. Better get back to work, I’m really forbidden to be on my company’s net, but had to get this in. Back later.

I do not understand the misplaced loyalty that some black folks still have for the Clintons.

      • nellcote

They’re looking for a job in the next Clinton administration and they can see how Rev.
Al’s profile has been raised by being a WH ally.

      • TresL

I don’t either. It’s sad. I really think it’s style over substance. Clearly not enough people have examined their record or recent behavior. We really need a Dem candidate willing to turn over all those rocks and expose what’s underneath.

        • creolechild

Style: Engaged in multiple affairs with various women over the years, engaged in sexual activities with White House intern, impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice.

Substance: No affairs. Married 20+ years to woman that he is unapologetically in love with… still.

See the difference? I’ll take substance over style any day! (And we haven’t even broached domestic/foreign policy yet.) Feminists will crawl over broken glass to cape for Hillary who became a punch line in jokes resulting from her husband’s many dalliances. She “stood by her man” but is that the message we want to send to young women who are faced with the same dilemma? Really? And they tried to come for FLOTUS because she considers her family to be her most important job?

What it all boils down to is white women (and some men) simply believe that it’s Hillary’s turn now that the black guy is leaving office–despite the fact that she’s not ready for prime time.

          • AxelFoley

            Boom!

          • TresL

ITA! I really think this massive media push and almost total saturation of the airwaves is meant to convince people who just don’t pay close attention that they should be for HRC because everyone else seems to be. It’s a not-so subliminal suggestion that achieves the same result.

          • creolechild

If she was as concerned about current issues as she says, why isn’t she advocating that folks get out and vote in the upcoming elections? You mean to tell me that she can’t do that while she’s out “campaigning” for book sales and votes.

          • TresL

She’s all about self. It’s so obvious to anyone paying even the slightest attention.

          • Aquagranny911

            Exactly!!!

        • Daltex82

I would love to see that happen. As then Sen. Obama exposed to the world in 2008 if HRC has to work for it, she is more than likely not up for the challenge.

    Update on my job position.

    1. It’s at CDC in ATL.

    2. The posted salary is in my current range and I think possible I have enough experience to I hold out for higher skin range.

    3. There are 4 positions in my current range, but one in a higher level position. I figured I would apply for both the average position and the mod-level position. I am definitely qualifies for the mid level position, it is exactly what I currently do. The hover level position I think isn’t much a stretch based on my experience but I would most def be at the lower to mid range within the higher level

    4. A lot of times with these federal jobs there is some possibilities of relocation benefits.

So do y all know anyone who works for CDC?

    • Aquagranny911

My daughter did for a while (2002-2005) & still consults for them in her current research job. It should be a good gig for you. Daughter moved on because she was doing a lot of traveling back & forth to DC & elsewhere for conferences with Homeland Security. She had just had her first baby & didn’t like all the travel. She wanted to be in one place with her husband & kiddo.

You do have to consider: Do you want to be that far from NOLA & your friends & Fam though after you worked so hard to get there from DFW? It’s a lot to think about.

If the money they offer is good & this is work you want to do then you really should consider it. I know Daughter never had problems with them except for the travel.

    • JojoRaze

Being a CDC microbiologist has to be the apex of microbiology so I feel you on wanting to chase this dream. You’re single with no children which makes relocation possible. However, like AQ said, do you really want to move again from your family with whom you’re obviously very close? Once you figure that out, GO FOR IT!

  • Aquagranny911

Nevada Voter Suppression Initiative Crashes And Burns

An effort to place a common voter suppression measure on the Nevada ballot this November failed. Organizers of the initiative, who included former Republican U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle, had to turn in over 100,000 signatures by 5 p.m. on Tuesday in order to trigger a vote on whether Nevada voters should be required to show photo ID before they can cast a ballot. The deadline came and went, and voter registrars in two counties said they’d received no petitions whatsoever.[..]

Although the Nevada ballot initiative is dead for now, it could arise
again after another petition signature drive. Indeed, this attempt to
put voter ID on the state ballot may have failed because a successful lawsuit challenging the formal description of the ballot initiative forced signature gatherers to restart their gathering anew last month.
