Wednesday Open Thread: Black Feminists/Womanists

This pictures summarizes Florynce Kennedy pretty well.

This pictures summarizes Florynce Kennedy pretty well.

Florynce Rae “Flo” Kennedy (February 11, 1916 – December 22, 2000), was an American lawyer, activist, civil rights advocate, and feminist.

Kennedy was born in Kansas City to an African-American family. Her father Wiley Kennedy was a Pullman porter, and later had a taxi business. The second of her parents’ five daughters, she had a happy childhood, full of support from her parents, despite experiencing poverty in the Great Depression and racism in her mostly white neighborhood. She later commented,

“My parents gave us a fantastic sense of security and worth. By the time the bigots got around to telling us that we were nobody, we already knew we were somebody.”

Kennedy graduated at the top of her class at Lincoln High School, after which she worked many jobs including owning a hat shop and operating elevators. After the death of her mother Zella in 1942, Kennedy left Kansas for New York City, moving to an apartment in Harlem with her sister Grayce. Of the move to New York she commented, “I really didn’t come here to go to school, but the schools were here, so I went.” In 1944 she began classes at Columbia University School of General Studies, majoring in pre-law and graduated in 1949. However, when she applied to the university’s law school, she was refused admission. In her autobiography Kennedy wrote, “The Associate Dean Willis Reese, told me I had been rejected not because I was a Black but because I was a woman. So I wrote him a letter saying that whatever the reason was, it felt the same to me, and some of my more cynical friends thought I had been discriminated against because I was Black.” Kennedy met with the Dean and threatened to sue the school. They admitted her.

Kennedy graduated from Columbia Law School in 1951. By 1954 she had opened her own office, doing matrimonial work, and some assigned criminal cases. She was a member of the Young Democrats. In 1956, she formed a legal partnership, which proved disastrous, and she was left with huge debts. Her partner had represented Billie Holiday, helping her avoid drug charges during her final days. Kennedy then came to represent Holiday’s estate, and also that of Charlie Parker, making waves in her attempts to recover monies owed to those estates. She also worked as an activist for feminism and civil rights, and the cases she took on increasingly tended to be related to these causes. She was close friends with fellow Columbia law graduate Morton Birnbaum MD, whose concept of sanism she influenced during the 1960′s.

In the 1970′s Kennedy traveled the lecture circuit with writer Gloria Steinem. If a man asked the pair if they were lesbians – a stereotype of feminists at the time – Kennedy would quote Ti-Grace Atkinson and answer, “Are you my alternative?” She was an early member of the National Organization for Women, but left then in 1970, dissatisfied with their approach to change. In 1971 she founded the Feminist Party, which nominated Shirley Chisholm for president. She also helped found the Women’s Political Caucus. Beginning in 1972 she served on the Advisory Board of theWestbeth Playwrights Feminist Collective, a New York City theatre group which produced plays on feminist issues.

Kennedy is known for her pro-choice activism on abortion, writing a book with Diane Schulder called Abortion Rap. Kennedy is sometimes claimed to have coined the phrase “If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament,” although Gloria Steinem attributed it to “an old Irish woman taxi driver in Boston,” who she said she and Kennedy met. In 1972, Kennedy filed tax evasion charges with the Internal Revenue Service against the Catholic Church, saying that their campaign against abortion rights violated the separation of church and state.

On the side of civil rights, Kennedy established the Media Workshop in 1966 to picket and lobby the media over their representation of Black people. She stated that she would lead boycotts of major advertisers if they didn’t feature black people in their ads. She attended all three Black Power conferences and represented H. Rap Brown and the Black Panthers.

Kennedy was known for her flamboyant dress – often in cowboy hats and pink sunglasses – and attitude. Once, to protest the lack of female bathrooms at Harvard, she led a mass urination on the grounds. When asked about this, she said:

“I’m just a loud-mouthed middle-aged colored lady with a fused spine and three feet of intestines missing and a lot of people think I’m crazy. Maybe you do too, but I never stop to wonder why I’m not like other people. The mystery to me is why more people aren’t like me.” Kennedy was well known for pithy, humorous and highly quotable statements, such as, “If the ass is protecting the system, ass-kicking should be undertaken regardless of the sex, ethnicity, or charm of the ass involved,” and “I know we’re termites. But if all the termites got together, the house would fall down.”

In 1974, People magazine wrote that she was “The biggest, loudest and, indisputably, the rudest mouth on the battleground.”

Aside from her legal and activist work, Kennedy also acted in two films. In The Landlord (1970), she played “Enid the Maid”, and in the independent political drama Born In Flames (1983), she played “Zella”.

In 1976, Kennedy wrote an autobiography called Color Me Flo: My Hard Life and Good Times, in which she wrote about her life and career. She died on December 12, 2000, at the age of 84.

One of the most underreported stories of this administration is the way that President Barack Obama has snatched the foreign policy wig from the GOP. Snatched it, and burned it right before their eyes. And did it with a smile on his face.
They don’t know what to do, and it burns them to no end.

The Obama Recovery, The Pope, and the Collective Right Wing Freakout
    Tuesday, December 03, 2013 | Posted by Spandan C at 4:05 PM

Despite Republican efforts to slow down, halt, and throw monkey wrenches into the economic recovery at every possible turn, the Obama recovery insists on continuing. Yesterday, two important indicators of growth happened for the economy: US manufacturing growth reached its strongest point in two-and-a-half years, and consumer demand blew the lid off of online sales, growing by as much as 20% year-over-year on Cyber Monday (with online retail giant Amazon.com growing sales by a whopping 44%).

Near-empty House of Representatives memorializes Metro-North victims

By Dan Friedman / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
    Wednesday, December 4, 2013, 5:32 AM

WASHINGTON – The House of Representatives paused Tuesday for a moment of silence for victims of the deadly Metro-North derailment, but in a shift from other recent memorials, the moment came before an almost empty chamber.

The dead and injured New Yorkers were memorialized by members of the New York delegation after almost all their colleagues left the room.

Aides to New York members said House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) deemed the event not a significant enough national tragedy for the moment of silence to occur between votes.

At de Blasio’s City Hall, Expect an Outsize Role for His Wife
By MICHAEL BARBARO and MICHAEL M. GRYNBAUM
    Published: December 3, 2013

Bill de Blasio’s wife, Chirlane McCray, was fed up. An ad for her
husband’s political opponent was running on her favorite radio station,
and she wanted the de Blasio campaign to respond.

“How much money do I have to raise this week to deal with this affront?” she wrote in a blunt email to her husband’s top aides in 2009,
mischievously warning that if the ad interrupted a cherished R & B
show, “I might get road rage.”

Such interventions from Ms. McCray were not unusual: Mr. de Blasio urged his political team to heed her words. In an email of his own, he shared his wife’s suggestions for how best to disseminate a campaign brochure in the race for public advocate that featured the diverse de Blasio family. (One idea: “Give it out at beauty salons.”)

The email’s subject line was telling: “This is the word of Chirlane.”

GOP House Decides 2nd Amendment Has Limits, Approves Gun Control Measure
By: Keith Brekhus more from Keith Brekhus
    Tuesday, December, 3rd, 2013, 10:34 pm

Second Amendment absolutists might be disappointed today upon discovering that the Republican controlled US House approved an extension of a gun ban. On a unanimous voice vote, the US House agreed to extend the Undetectable Firearms Act, continuing a 25-year-old prohibition against guns that can evade metal detectors and X-ray machines. The law was first put into effect in 1988, and signed into law by President Reagan. The House bill requires that any plastic gun have some piece of metal in it or on it so that it cannot be used to evade a metal detector.

12 Years a Slave and the Obama Era
    By Jonathan Chait

This last weekend, I finally saw 12 Years a Slave. It was the most powerful movie I’ve ever seen in my life, an event so gripping and terrifying that, when I went to bed ten hours later — it was a morning matinee — I lay awake for five hours turning it over in my mind before I could fall asleep. I understand it not merely as the greatest film about slavery ever made, as it has been widely hailed, but a film more broadly about race. Its sublimated themes, as I understand them, identify the core social and political fissures that define the American racial divide to this day. To identify 12 Years a Slave as merely a story about slavery is to miss what makes race the furious and often pathological subtext of American politics in the Obama era.

While its depiction of physical torture has commanded the most attention, I found the psychological torture more disturbing. To make a person a slave requires making them complicit in their own subservience, through rituals of degradation, such as forcing them to clap their hands to mocking songs, dancing for their masters, or being stripped, or compared to animals. The one time Northrup tries to escape, he wanders immediately onto a lynch party, which underscores the threat of violence lurking invisibly everywhere. (And the threat of the noose survived in the South a century past the threat of the lash.)

Donald Trump, Eric Schneiderman talk smack in Vanity Fair

By Kenneth Lovett / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
    Tuesday, December 3, 2013, 11:14 PM

ALBANY — Maybe Donald Trump and New York state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman should start their own reality show.

An article in the upcoming edition of Vanity Fair on Schneiderman’s $40 million fraud lawsuit against Trump University shows one thing: the AG and The Donald really don’t like each other.

Schneiderman says Trump’s so vain, he’s “the kind of person who goes to the Super Bowl and thinks the people in the huddle are talking about him.”

The billionaire developer, on the other hand, calls the attorney general “a disgusting human being.”

House bill would bash Tehran deal
    By Molly K. Hooper – 12/04/13 06:00 AM EST

House Republicans are considering various legislative options that would either tacitly or explicitly rip the Obama administration’s nuclear deal with Iran.

A handful of House GOP lawmakers told The Hill that the party is debating how best to express disapproval of the multilateral agreement, which was struck shortly after Congress left for Thanksgiving recess.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) on Tuesday was adamant during a closed-door meeting with Republicans that the White House explain the details of the agreement, a source in the room told The Hill.

Noting that Cantor is “very concerned with where the president is leading us,” the source said the No. 2 GOP House leader intended to work closely with Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) to produce a legislative response.

Journalists Swipe at Bill Clinton for Mocking Their Premature Hillary Coverage
    by Noah Rothman | 9:25 am, December 4th, 2013

…When asked if Hillary Clinton is running, Bill Clinton said that he
does not know and that it was not a subject of any relevance in 2013. He added that the “four-year campaign” is bad for the country.

“We have newspapers that have people devoted to doing nothing but
covering a campaign that doesn’t exist,” he said. “So, then they have to
decide to create stories. You know, we don’t need that.”

…“If HRC doesn’t want to be covered as a likely 2016 candidate, she could just say she’s not running,” suggested New York Times political reporter Nick Confessore.

“Crazy idea!” Amy Chozick, New York Times national political reporter, shot back.

House Dems To Hit 60 Republicans On Obamacare

House Democrats’ campaign arm plans to hit roughly 60 Republicans on Obamacare as part of the Obama administration’s pushback against criticism by opponents of the healthcare law. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is blasting out statements to supporters targeting five dozen House Republicans who have criticized the Affordable Care Act.

The statements tout the benefits from the Affordable Care Act and link House Republicans criticism of the law and the website to opposition other aspects of the healthcare law, like immunizations for children and cancer screenings.[....]

Talking trash: Baltimore students speak out against waste-burning power plant

It’s bad enough that someone thought it was a good idea to build a trash incinerator in one of the most air-polluted areas in Baltimore. But the New York-based company Energy Answers also wants to burn garbage near two schools, including an elementary — and the state of Maryland seems poised to let it happen.[....]

Next Tuesday, Dec. 10, on Human Rights Day, students from the affected schools in Baltimore plan to march to the incinerator site, along with neighborhood residents, environmental groups, and the human rights organization United Workers. The students created a video (below) about the risks and hazards of having trash burned close to their schools and are calling on Gov. Martin O’Malley — who’s usually credited with being one of the greener governors in the nation — to cancel the company’s permits.[...]

Didn’t we all say Dan Choi was mentally unstable and needed to be put in a mental health facility? Didn’t we all say he was protesting just to protest and had no life outside of being the anti-Obama DADT media darling? Didn’t we say his unstable behind was just being used by Maddow and anti-Obama left wing media as a way to harm the President. This fool has literally gone crazy and none of those people are there for him now. But DADT is overturned, thanks to the President he attacked all along the way.

    http://prospect.org/article/passion-dan-choi

“The trial laid Dan bare. His passion. His penchant for inflamed
rhetoric. His ability to attract followers. His solipsism. His
vulnerability. On a few occasions, Dan has told me the trial was a plea
for help. “I didn’t know what to do with myself after ‘don’t ask, don’t
tell’ was repealed,” he says. Other times, he finds his nerve. ‘I just
want them to apologize to me in open court—that’s all’.”

Most of PBO’s virulent haters are just as crazy. gg is another case in point. Crazy as a damn bedbug being lauded as a “journalist” because of his animosity towards President Obama.

    • jds09

After skimming this article, what really jumped out at me is that while he was in the closet at West Point, his fellow cadets actively called him a “kook”. His whole activist shtick was built with straw: blaming PBO with a false narrative (you can change this now with a pen, refusing to acknowledge the value of a long-term strategy) and ignoring the racism he experienced in his “activism.”

    • Miranda

In late August, I was on my way to interview Dan at his apartment when he messaged me that a big protest was shaping up at the White House. President Barack Obama had just announced that he would ask Congress for authorization to use force in Syria. I raced to meet him at the north entrance, but all I found were tourists snapping photos and Dan circling around on his bike. He hung out for a while, texting a friend to ask for an update. She didn’t respond. After 20 minutes of scouring his contacts for people who might have more information, he looked up from his phone and gave me a sideways grin. He was being a good sport, but he looked crestfallen. I sensed—or maybe I just imagined it—he was asking himself the same question I had been: Who is Dan Choi without “don’t ask, don’t tell”?

      ————————
He was a just a pawn in the game, nothing more.

      • itgurl_29

Yup. Stupid behind. He got played by all those white libertarians, including Maddow, and was used as as a pawn to attack the President. He was on her show constantly when she was going after the President on DADT. I bet he thought she and all those other organization leaders actually cared about him.

Small Employers Plan Bigger Bonuses Than Last Year

Tracking small business hiring trends in recent months has been a dull and dreary affair, with job growth decreasing slowly but steadily. Here’s a bit of holiday cheer: Some 55 percent of 563 small businesses surveyed by payroll services company SurePayroll are
planning to hand out year-end bonuses this year, up from 38 percent in 2012. Eighty percent of those bonuses would be equal to or greater than last year’s payouts[....]

If hiring is down, why are small employers writing year-end checks? Business owners have been wary to expand for the usual reasons
(uncertainty over the effects of the health-reform law, negotiations
regarding the fiscal cliff), but business has been good. Seventy-five
percent of SurePayroll survey respondents have met or exceeded
expectations for the past three quarters, says Alter. Strong sales and flat payrolls have left business owners with enough cash to reward employees.[....]

D.C. Council Unanimously Votes To Give Workers A Raise And Time Off

On Tuesday, the Washington, D.C. Council unanimously voted to raise the city’s minimum wage to $11.50 an hour and to expand its current paid sick leave policy to cover tipped workers, who were originally left out. Both bills need a final vote before they head to Mayor Vince Gray (D) for his signature.

As the Washington City Paper explains, “the unanimous vote [for the minimum wage] all but guarantees that it could survive any veto attempt by Mayor Vince Gray,” who has said he supports a raise to $10 an hour. It’s currently $8.25. Under the Council’s proposal, the wage would eventually hit $11.50 in 2016 and from there on would be tied to inflation, automatically rising.[....]

70 percent of Hollywood’s silent films lost forever, Library of Congress confirms

[....] Only 14 per cent of a total of around 11,000 movies made between 1912 and 1930 exist in their original format, with a further 11 per cent available to view in foreign language versions or in a lower quality format. Around 70 per cent are completely lost.[....] Many of the lost film prints fell victim to fire or deterioration. Others were neglected or destroyed, according to the common practices of the time.

Of the major studios of the era, only MGM kept a decent library of silent fare, with early 20th century giant Paramount considered one of the most neglectful. The latter did not begin preserving titles until the 1980s and has reportedly lost more than two thirds of its once huge library of more than 1,000 silent films.[....]

CBS News chairman defends Lara Logan in staff meeting
By DYLAN BYERS | 12/4/13 10:58 AM EST

CBS News chairman and ’60 Minutes’ EP Jeff Fager held a meeting
with CBS News staff on Tuesday and took questions about the fate of Lara Logan and Max McClellan, the journalists currently on a leave of
absence in the wake of the controversial ’60 Minutes’ report on
    Benghazi, POLITICO has learned.

In the meeting, held with ‘CBS This Morning’ staffers, Fager said he
did not know how long Logan and her producer would be on leave, and made no indication that they would be asked to resign in the wake of the now-retracted report, according to sources familiar with the meeting. Those sources said that Fager defended Logan as a valuable member of the ’60 Minutes’ team even as he acknolwedged the erroneous nature of the report.

“He did not throw her under the bus,” one source said of Fager’s remarks about Logan.

Restaurant Forced To Stop Feeding The Homeless After Complaints From Nearby Businesses

For years, a small restaurant in western Indiana served a free meal
to customers every Thursday.[...] Despite the large crowd that showed up to Buttery Shelf Bakery — up to 70 people at a time — there have been relatively few incidents between patrons and no one has been arrested or even had to file a police report.[....]

The problem boils down to the Not In My Backyard (NIMBY) syndrome. Nobody wants homeless people to starve, but many segments of society want them to be taken care of elsewhere. Instead of considering poor people a valued part of the community, they’re a “problem” that should be dealt with somewhere out of sight.[....]

    — – –The Guardian has only published about 1% of some 58,000 files leaked by Edward Snowden—and it’s unlikely to “publish a huge amount more,” says editor Alan Rusbridger. He spoke to a British parliamentary committee as he faces scrutiny over whether the paper had weakened national security with the revelations, the AP reports. The paper “made very selective judgments” about what to release, and kept names secret, Rusbridger said.

As to attacks from some lawmakers and other officials, Rusbridger noted that national security was apparently “being used as a trump card.” “I feel that some of this activity has been designed to intimidate the Guardian,” he noted, arguing that publishing the reports was necessary to inspire debate about intelligence practices.

—– Our obstructionist Republicans have outdone themselves this year. The 113th Congress is now the least productive Congress ever. Can we get an amen for legislative exceptionalism, GOP style? The goal is to do NOTHING until Obama is out of office, and they are diligent obstructionists.

The New York Times reported today:

The 113th Congress has passed all of 55 laws so far this year, seven fewer at this point than the 112th Congress — the least productive Congress ever. House and Senate negotiators will meet on Wednesday to try to come to terms on a farm bill, but they remain far apart, especially on food-stamp cuts that the House is demanding. The leaders of the House and Senate budget committees will also meet this week, and they appear to be closing in on a modest deal that would set spending levels for the next two years while relieving some of the pain from the across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration.
