Wednesday Open Thread: Black Women In The Military

As one of only two female African-American pilots in the Air Force , Capt. Christina Hopper is a rarity. She is also the first and only Black female F-16 Fighting Falcon instructor pilot at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. Hooper is also the  first female Black F-16 pilot to fight in a war, flying about 50 missions and logging 800 hours in Iraq. When Hooper flies an F-16, she flies solo, acting as pilot, navigator and bombardier.

While in Iraq, Hopper saw hostilities escalate and the potential of war become more pronounced. “Sure enough, while we were there, they basically froze everybody that was in theater and said we were going to stay there until Operation Iraqi Freedom kicked off,” she told the The Arizona Republic Newspaper. “Once the war kicked off, we were flying anywhere from two to three times a day, so it really added up fast.”

One of her greatest anxieties was being captured, but she tried not to dwell on it. “It wasn’t something I focused on, but it’s something that kind of played in the back of my mind,” said Hopper, whose hometown is San Antonio.

Despite her parents’ Air Force careers, Hopper didn’t think she wanted to join the service, so she attended the University of Texas at Austin. Before her freshman year, she met with an Air Force recruiter at the university, who made the Air Force sound good. Hopper decided to try the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program for a year.

Hopper was a competitive swimmer, and her ROTC commander let her balance her athletic pursuits with the program, which persuaded her to stay in ROTC through college. She began her freshman year in the premed program and studying psychology. She thought that perhaps she’d be a doctor in the Air Force, but she decided after her freshman year that premed wasn’t really the direction she should go. She dropped those classes but stuck with the psychology major, considering that military intelligence might be a good route to take.

Then, in her junior year in college, her ROTC commander talked to her about becoming a pilot. “I told him, ‘No sir, I don’t think I should do that,’ ” she told the Arizona Republic.  She eventually applied for a pilot slot in her junior year,  qualified and began her training.  Hooper competed against her peers in a merit-based competition and ended up an F-16 pilot. She says that while it’s easy piloting the F-16, because it is like a flying computer, it’s not easy to fly it well.

Hopper earned four Air Medals and one Aerial Achievement Medal in the war. Three of the Air Medals were for the amount of time she spent flying in combat, and one of them was for flying through rain and blowing sand and completing her mission despite her aircraft being struck by lighting and losing her jet’s anti-aircraft warning system.

Hopper has kept the legacy going with her husband Aaron, also an Air Force pilot and an F-15 pilot in the 522nd Fighter Squadron.

Sounds like stimulus-response — a raw, paltry thing compared to “self-correction” aka redemption, internal change, go and sin no more, empathetic connection, change of heart, saying “I’m sorry” face to face + public twitter, . . .

No, here it is. Since you wanna be Klansmen, no more basketball program. If they can’t do that, then every other team needs to refuse to play them. Lock the gyms up and play at the other schools. Because damn playing the klan.

Equal pay for women becomes issue in Texas campaign
    March. 18, 2014 at 5:21 PM

AUSTIN, Texas, March 18 (UPI) — Beth Cubriel, executive director of the Republican Party of Texas, agrees with other party leaders that women do not need a stronger pay equity law.

“Men are better negotiators. I would encourage women instead of pursuing the courts for action to become better negotiators,” Cubriel said Monday in an interview with YNN Austin.

Also Monday, Cari Christman, head of the RedState Women PAC, told WFAA-TV, Dallas, women in Texas “want and deserve” equal pay. But she said legislation is not the way to do it, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Christman also suggested women have “a lot to juggle,” making them too busy to go to court.

    – - – –The Obama administration on Wednesday unveiled an initiative aimed at giving communities data to prepare for the effects of climate change.

The Climate Data Initiative will bring together data from multiple federal agencies and make it available for free, White House advisors John Podesta and John Holdren said in a blog post. The first set of data focuses on coastal flooding and sea level changes.

“While no single weather event can be attributed to climate change, we know that our changing climate is making many kinds of extreme events more frequent and more severe,” the advisors wrote, naming rising sea levels, wildfires, heat waves and heavy rain as examples.

“Even as we work to curb greenhouse-gas emissions and expand renewable energy generation, we need to take steps to make our communities more resilient to the climate-change impacts we can’t avoid — some of which are already well underway,” they wrote.

New York City to pay $98 million to settle fire department racial bias suit
    By Ross Levitt, CNN

New York (CNN) — New York City agreed in a settlement Tuesday to pay $98 million in back pay and benefits to entry-level firefighters who claim the New York Fire Department used a biased entrance exam that kept African-American and Latinos off the job.

The Justice Department sued the city in May 2007, alleging the exams — first administered in 1999 — both discriminated against minority candidates and didn’t properly determine who was qualified for the positions.

A U.S. district judge ordered the city to pay $128 million and to hire 293 black and Latino applicants, provided they pass all of the tests in the hiring process.

The first groups of these candidates joined the fire department in July 2013 and January, with an additional group expected to join in July.

The financial issue had remained a sticking point. However, current Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration did not seem to have former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s desire to continue fighting the suit.

“This administration is fully committed to promoting diversity and equal access in every sector across our five boroughs, and this settlement will move New York City one step closer to this goal,” de Blasio said in a written statement.

US announces $1.2b settlement with Toyota
By Eric Tucker and Tom Krisher |

    ASSOCIATED PRESS MARCH 19, 2014

WASHINGTON — The US has reached a $1.2 billion settlement with Toyota Motor Corp. and filed a criminal charge alleging the Japanese automaker defrauded consumers by issuing misleading statements about safety issues in Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

Under the agreement, announced Wednesday by US Attorney General Eric Holder, the company will admit that it misled US consumers by making deceptive statements about two safety issues affecting its vehicles. As a result, Toyota will pay a $1.2 billion financial penalty under a ‘‘deferred prosecution agreement.’’

It is the largest penalty of its kind imposed on an automotive company by the US, Holder said.

Coincidentally I was just talking about this last night. My sister is one that must buy her insurance on her own and her employer reimburses her. She’s a proud Obamacare customer and she doesn’t qualify for subsidies. For many, the ACA has made the private market MUCH better in terms of options AND premiums.
    ———————————-
The Satisfied Unsubsidized: Obamacare’s Hidden Winners
ANDREW SPRUNG MAR 19 2014, 8:00 AM ET

More than 80 percent of the people who have signed up for health plans through state or federal Affordable Care Act exchanges qualify for subsidies to help pay premiums and out-of-pocket medical expenses. But what about all the millions who don’t have access to employer-sponsored health insurance but also don’t qualify for subsidies?

About half of the 12 million Americans buying health insurance on the individual market are subsidy-ineligible, according to the Urban Institute. Are they all fuming and lining up to appear in anti-Obamacare commercials?

Chances are not. As veterans of the individual market, many are accustomed to its shocks and uncertainties. About a quarter of them received cancellation notices last fall, and others face substantial premium hikes. Some will be forced to pay more than in the past, in some cases in part because they are covered for services they don’t want, like childbirth or mental healthcare. But many are finding their options much better and their status less precarious than in the pre-ACA market.

7-Eleven worker can keep job after offering free coffee to homeless man

Ava Lins says boss took her off schedule after giving man $1 cup of joe
    UPDATED 11:49 PM EDT Mar 17, 2014

SALEM, Mass. —Ava Lins, 19, is in financial dire straits.RELATED

“I have about $10 to my name,” she told NewsCenter 5 on Monday from her Salem apartment.

Her electricity and her cellphone service are about to be terminated. She can barely afford her rent, and just finally caught up with her heating bill.

Lins said much of that was because the 7-Eleven convenience store on Norman Street in Salem was in the process of firing her for giving away a free coffee to a homeless man.

“He was freezing,” Lins told NewsCenter 5′s Liam Martin in an exclusive story. “You could tell. It was one of the coldest nights of the month.”

She offered him a warm cup of joe — a small, worth about $1.

She said her boss, Romany Youseff, entered the store Thursday night as the homeless man was leaving.

“My boss … grabbed his jacket and began screaming and yelling, ‘Did you pay for this? Did you pay for this?’ And I lied for him, I said, ‘Yes,’” she said.

Work conditions at 7-11 and similarly styled convenience stores are in many ways more oppressive than a Walmart or sports store mentioned in a posting by a former journalist. A former employee of a 7-11 told me the managers held them accountable for every cup and napkin. I found the “concern” about napkin count extreme given at one time the workers on the night shift had the highest on the job death rates.

      • qosine

One of my first jobs was at 7-11. Obsessed w/shrink.
Non-stop work (have to admit I could stock a cooler

Judge rejects latest Koch-led bid to snuff out Cape Wind

A U.S. District Court judge rejected a long-running legal effort by the Koch-funded Alliance for Nantucket Sound and other groups to strip the planned Cape Wind energy farm of its federal approvals, which have taken more than a decade to secure. Bill, a lesser-known Koch brother, has spent millions leading a battle against construction of the 130-turbine offshore wind array, which he says would mar his views of Nantucket Sound.

According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, this was the
alliance’s 15th legal challenge to the project, and the 15th to fail. The judge did however, rule that some illegal shortcuts had been taken by two agencies in granting environmental approvals — wildlife-related problems that he ordered remedied.[....]

Nate Silver’s New Science Writer Ignores The Data On Climate Science

[....] Silver has brought on Roger Pielke, Jr., a professor of environmental studies at the University of Colorado Boulder, as a contributing writer – a political scientist who comes with a long history of data distortion and confrontations with climate scientists.[....] Pielke routinely seeks to minimize the impacts and severity of
climate change and in the process, has been repeatedly criticized as inaccurate and misleading by some of the nation’s top climate
    scientists.

Most recently, Pielke tangled with Obama science advisor and former president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, John Holdren, over the relationship between the severity of California’s epic drought and climate change. In February, Pielke slammed Holdren for offering a scientifically-grounded explanation of how climate change is worsening western drought. As Joe Romm observed, “Holdren’s views are right in the mainstream of climatologists’ view of drought. I can think of no climate scientists who share Pielke’s startling assessment of Holdren’s views as ‘zombie science.’”[....]

Dubai: Metro system to be turned into art gallery

[....] Four stations have been selected for the first phase of development. One will host a collection of Islamic art and Arabic calligraphy, with pieces drawn from 1,400 years of Islamic culture. But it’s not only the stations that are getting a make-over, as the driverless trains will also be decorated inside and out to reflect the project.

Construction is due to start within weeks, the Emirates 247 news website reports, and work should be finished in time for a national arts festival taking place next year. According to Gulf News, half a million people use the five-year-old metro system every day, many of whom will pass through at least one of the four new museums on their journeys.[....]

Victory For Women In Arkansas: Federal Judge Rules Abortion Ban
    Unconstitutional

[....] Judge Susan Webber Wright says it’s unconstitutional to ban abortion on the basis of a fetal heartbeat, instead of viability. One of the things she said was, “The state presents no evidence that a fetus can live outside the mother’s womb at twelve weeks.” She also says that only a doctor can determine viability, and that the Supreme Court has made it clear that it’s not the government’s place to determine viability.

Arkansas’ abortion ban came about around a year ago, and was the most restrictive in the nation after North Dakota’s. The state legislature chose 12 weeks because that’s usually when people can
hear a fetal heartbeat. The religious right tends to conflate “heartbeat” with “viability.” They use the fetal heartbeat to appeal to
people’s emotions about the ethics of abortion.[....]

Kansas ‘retaliation’ bill would allow police to arrest people who complain about officers
    By David Edwards
    Wednesday, March 19, 2014 9:37 EDT

A Kansas bill being considered by the House Standing Committee on Corrections and Juvenile Justice would give police the power to arrest people who file complaints against officers if those allegations were proven false.

Kansas Exposed pointed out this week that someone on the Corrections and Juvenile Justice hadanonymously filed HB 2698, which would allow people to be charged with felony perjury.

And the measure would prevent any other law enforcement agency from taking up the investigation once it had been closed.

Ironically, the anonymously-filed legislation would also ban anonymous complaints against police.

The Raiders strike back at cheerleaders: You can’t sue us, ladies

[....] The women, who are professional dancers, earn less than minimum wage and are paid at the end of the season instead of every two weeks as required by California law. They earn $125 per game and are not paid for practices or meetings. They can be fined for being late to practice, or for not having the right hair color or for failing to appropriately polish their nails. They are required to make unpaid appearances on behalf of the team.[....]

But will the cheerleaders ever get their day in court? Not if the Raiders can help it.[....] Like many lopsided contracts that favor employer rights over employee rights, the Raiders claim that the cheerleaders’ contract requires arbitration. The Raiders have asked Alameda County Superior Court Judge Wayne Carvill to put the lawsuit on hold and force Lacy T. and Sarah G. to plead their case with the NFL commissioner.[....] Now the case is not just about a football team’s appalling business practices toward its cheerleaders. It now becomes a case about whether so-called “forced arbitration” clauses are legal.[....]

Prosecutors vow to pursue fugitives across state lines

Police and prosecutors from Pennsylvania to Florida are reconsidering – and in many cases reversing – decisions to let thousands of felony suspects evade arrest by crossing a state border following a USA TODAY investigation last week. The newspaper found that across the USA, 186,000 accused felons can escape justice merely by crossing a state line because police and prosecutors don’t want to spend the time or money to pursue them into other states, a process known as extradition. Those decisions, typically made in secret, leave crimes unpunished and victims outraged.[....] Reviews are now underway in:

    • Georgia: The top prosecutor in Macon said he would ask police to stop marking felony warrants as not extraditable.[....]

    • Wisconsin: Officials in two counties pledged to review their cases after they were alerted that some warrants for serious felonies were either marked with a code saying the police wouldn’t retrieve the suspects from out of state or hadn’t been entered into the FBI’s national fugitive database at all.[....]

    • Pennsylvania: Senior prosecutors in Philadelphia are reviewing
thousands of felony cases in which they had not sought to pursue
suspects once they leave the state.[....]

    • Florida: The chief prosecutor in Manatee County said he was surprised to learn that police were unwilling to extradite suspects on more than 80% of the county’s outstanding felony warrants.[....]

Babies are surviving in the poorest parts of Africa thanks to the ingenuity of students in a Rice University design class. Faced

Inhofe: ‘This is not an Obama-bashing meeting. … It is, really.’
The port system, not “environmental stuff,” needs money, the senator says.
    Posted: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 12:00 am

CATOOSA —— U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe had a simple explanation for just about every ill on Tuesday.President Barack Obama.

“This is not an Obama-bashing meeting,” Inhofe told about 50 businessmen and women at the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, then caught himself. “It is, really, with me here, I guess. It’s not meant to be. But there’s where the problem is.”

From crumbling highways to higher business costs to Vladimir Putin, the blame for all was laid at the feet of the president.

“I forget your question, but that’s the answer,” he said after one particularly long response tying Obama to decades of deferred maintenance on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System.

“Where has all the money gone?” Inhofe asked. “Well, we’ve found out that … a lot of it has gone to this far-left environmental stuff. I know this offends some of you in the room, and I really don’t care. We’ve got to talk about the reality of this thing.”

RNC Chair: Voters Actually Thought Romney ‘Would Make A Better President’ Than Obama (VIDEO)
    TOM KLUDT – MARCH 19, 2014, 1:30 PM EDT

Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus applied some dizzying spin on Wednesday to the outcome of the 2012 presidential election.

“I mean, the fact of the matter is Mitt Romney won on the message,” Priebus said. “He won on jobs, he won on the economy, he won on the question of, ‘Who do you actually think would make a better president?’ But where he lost was on the question of, ‘Who cares about you?’”

This is why people on both sides need to keep the word “Nazi” out of their mouths unless they’re actually talking about the monsters that took over Germany back in the day.

What Does It Really Mean When Politicians and Pundits Cry “Nazi”?

The Holocaust never left my in-laws. It hung like a cloud of incomprehensible horror, darkening their lives until they both died a few years ago, in their 90s. My grandmother never spoke of her family or her Judaism. As instructed by Ernst, my father never mentioned his religious heritage for years; I only learned of my Jewish ancestry when I was in my 20s, on Christmas Day, no less. Ernst had gone from a wealthy man in Germany to someone who had to start all over again working in someone else’s textile company in New York. These were people who lost everything, whose loved ones were ripped away from them and murdered in the most horrific ways, whose bodies disappeared into the fires of the Holocaust, who never fully recovered from the incomprehensible brutality that descended, unbidden and unexpected, onto their lives.

It is hard to fully comprehend the magnitude of the Nazi death camps and their impact on the lives of untold millions. But, even so, there are a few things I can say for certain: the Nazis, and the Holocaust they brought were nothing like Obamacare. Or the national debt. Or political correctness. Or criticism of economic inequality. Or the Tea Party. Or the Internal Revenue Service. Or the Obama administration. Or the Bush administration. Or any of the other masses of infinitesimal flotsam spewed up in self-pitying and hysterical analogies by vulgarians with more mouth than brain.

And, damn it, how dare so many of you politicians and political commentators and entertainers spit on the ashes of the earth containing the bodies of millions of the slaughtered, by making such asinine comparisons. How dare you belittle unspeakable suffering, how dareyou brush aside the emotional torment of survivors, how dare you feed into the Holocaust denialism by pretending that some difference in political opinions is just as bad as the literal torture and destruction of millions of families.

    How dare you?

Every scare tactic in the world is about to be pulled out in order to help the GOP gain the Senate. Just watch, starting with this. Each state can curtail premium hikes and usually do, but watch how this year many will conspicuously decide not to do so.
    ———————-
    O-Care premiums to skyrocket
    By Elise Viebeck

Health industry officials say ObamaCare-related premiums will double in some parts of the country, countering claims recently made by the administration.

The expected rate hikes will be announced in the coming months amid an intense election year, when control of the Senate is up for grabs. The sticker shock would likely bolster the GOP’s prospects in November and hamper ObamaCare insurance enrollment efforts in 2015.

The industry complaints come less than a week after Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius sought to downplay concerns about rising premiums in the healthcare sector. She told lawmakers rates would increase in 2015 but grow more slowly than in the past.

“The increases are far less significant than what they were prior to the Affordable Care Act,” the secretary said in testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee.

    WELP!

Barack Obama, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Poverty, and Culture
    By Jonathan Chait

…Coates rebukes Cosby, who famously declared that many poor
people “are not holding up their end of the deal.” Conservatives love to
quote this line, forgetting that “deal” implies reciprocality — the need to combine personal responsibility with traditional aid — not the unilateral assignment of blame. It’s especially strange that Coates would lump Bill Cosby’s view in with that of conservatives, since a few years ago,

Coates wrote a razor-sharp piece decrying the weird tendency of conservatives to fabricate anti-black quotes and put them into Cosby’s mouth. He explained at the time:

Cosby, himself, loudly took a moral message to African-Americans a few years back, much to the delight of a certain segment of white conservatives.

But because white conservatives so poorly understand black people, they never quite understood Cosby or the organic black conservative tradition he was speaking out of. (I wrote about this for the magazine a few years back.) That tradition argues traditional conservative “up from your bootstraps” ideology, but has no real interest in acting as foil for white conservatives who want to downplay racism.

Having previously taken apart the habit of equating Cosby’s ideas with right-wing thought, Coates is now doing it himself.

      I love this analogy:

If I’m watching a basketball game in which the officials are systematically favoring one team over another (let’s call them Team A and Team Duke) as an analyst, the officiating bias may be my central concern. But if I’m coaching Team A, I’d tell my players to ignore the biased officiating. Indeed, I’d be concerned the bias would either discourage them or make them lash out, and would urge them to overcome it. That’s not the same as denying bias. It’s a sensible practice of encouraging people to concentrate on the things they can control.
