Wednesday Open Thread: Little Known or Interesting Black History Facts

It’s Wednesday aka Hump Day! Today. Today’s open thread is highlighting more than 5 facts.

The Father of Black History

FACT 1:Before Wally Amos became famous for his “Famous Amos” chocolate chip cookies, he was a talent agent at the William Morris Agency, where he worked with the likes of the Supremes and Simon & Garfunkel.

FACT 2: After a long career as an actress and singer, Pearl Bailey earned a bachelor’s degree in theology from Georgetown University in 1985.

FACT 3: Being mischievous was Thurgood Marshall’s gateway to the law. For punishment, he was forced to copy the Constitution. It eventually piqued his interest.

FACT 4: Langston Hughes’ daddy discouraged him from being a writer and only agreed to pay for his college education if he studied engineering.

FACT 5: Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the “Father of Black History” and the first person of enslaved parents to graduate from an Ivy League university, that announced Negro History Week in 1925 and first celebrated it in February 1926. One of Woodson’s professors had previously told him that “the negro had no history”. Negro History Week was started to counter what Woodson knew as a false, yet popularly believed, claim. The week would grow to become Black History Month. Why February? Woodson chose it because it was the month Abe Lincoln and Frederick Douglass died.

FACT 6: Jazz composer Billy Strayhorn has been instrumental in solidifying the influence of black culture in music and entertainment. Unless you’re a fan of jazz or have parents and grandparents that have are into the genre, you may not be know that Strayhorn, an openly gay man, wrote the classic standards performed by Duke Ellington: “Take the A Train,” “Something to Live For” and the ultimate lounge ballad, “Lush Life”.

FACT 7: In 1598, Isabel de Olvera, a free mulatto, accompanies the Juan Guerra de Resa Expedition which colonizes what is now New Mexico

FACT 8: In 1784, Prince Hall establishes the first black Masonic lodge in the United States. African Lodge #459 is granted a Masonic charter by the Grand Lodge of England.

FACT 9: In 1790, Free African Americans in Charleston form the Brown Fellowship Society. Founded in 1790, the Brown Fellowship Society is the oldest all-male Funeral Society in Charleston, South Carolina.

FACT 10: In 1791, In February Major Andrew Ellicott hires Benjamin Banneker to assist in a survey of the boundaries of the 100-square-mile federal district that would later become the District of Columbia.

The History of The Brown Fellowship Society

James Mitchell, George Bampfield, William Cattel, George Bedon, and Samuel Saltus, all mulatto members of Charleston’s St. Phillips Episcopal Church, founded the Brown Fellowship Society. Although the church was interracial, the attached cemetery was restricted to whites. The Fellowship Society aimed to establish their own cemetery for “brown” African American individuals, believing it would foster a sense of social unity among them. Officially the stated purpose was to provide respectable funerals for Society members, support widows, and educate surviving children.

Determined not to upset the white community, the Society did nothing to help slaves (indeed, some lighter-skinned members were slave-owners themselves) and were careful about whom they admitted to their ranks, which consisted of no more than fifty men at a time. In fact, prospective members were voted on at three meetings before they were allowed to join, and had to pay a hefty, for the time, $50 initiation fee (plus regular dues). The group purchased burial grounds as well as a meeting house.

Typically only free lighter skinned African Americans were allowed to join, but sometimes darker-skinned individuals who had naturally straight hair were permitted as well. All who joined were considered prosperous and a few were wealthy.  Most held relatively affluent jobs such as shoemakers and tailors, but were still subject to prejudice from the white community.

Darker-skinned black men, led by Thomas Smalls, formed their own group, The Society for Free Blacks of Dark Complexion, in 1843, and purchased their own burial land. After the Civil War, the Brown Fellowship Society expanded to include more African Americans, including women and those of darker skin, and changed its name to the Century Fellowship Society. The graveyard property was sold in 1945 by descendants of the Century Fellowship Society. In the late 1950s the graveyard was paved over so that a parking lot could be built for Catholic Bishop England High School. In 1990, the graveyard descendants organized to erect a small memorial to their ancestors, who are buried beneath the asphalt.

We’ve been joking about Al Qaeda and the expense reports ….

Now, we know that they’re doing a headhunter search for a new CEO.

Stealth Search: Embattled Al Qaeda Hunts for a New Bin Laden
    By Robert Windrem

Battered and on the run, al Qaeda is quietly looking for a charismatic leader capable of taking command when Ayman al-Zawahri’s tenure comes to what will likely be a violent end. And just as quietly, the U.S. intelligence community is searching for that same man -– so they can kill him.

    A Secret Job Search

The search for a successor to the 62-year-old Zawahri is cloaked in secrecy, in large part because of the success of U.S. efforts to wipe out al Qaeda’s leadership.

According to an NBC News analysis, the U.S. has eliminated at least six potential successors -– all in drone attacks — since bin Laden was killed in a U.S. Navy SEAL raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 1, 2011. All of them were on a “kill list” created by the U.S. intelligence community and approved by the president. No name added to the kill list has ever been removed

    Cheering for the Wild Man
    By Ed Kilgore

Regular readers know I’m closely watching the U.S. Senate race back home in Georgia, and especially the GOP primary, which I’ve called a “conservative petri dish.” And without a doubt, the maddest scientist in the lab is U.S. Rep Paul Broun, Jr., he of the “evolution is a lie straight from the pit of hell” remark and other fine vein-charring elocutions.

Broun recently made news by indicating at a candidate forum that he would (of course) vote for the impeachment of the president, and challenging the conservative bona fides of any rival who was not willing to take that pledge (Karen Handel and some minor candidates did not; Jack Kingston, Phil Gingrey, and David Perdue—the other major candidates—weren’t there). The Georgia Democratic Party, eager to spread Broun’s fever as thoroughly as possible throughout the candidate field, put up a YouTube video repeating the fiery congressman’s call-out to the others to take a position.

So now, in his very first television ad, Broun is using the Democratic video as an argument that “liberals fear a true conservative,” and are thus attacking him:

Why Republicans Will Never Stop Lying About Obamacare
    By Gene Lyons

Politically speaking, here’s the thing about those melodramatic ads attacking the Affordable Care Act currently running on TV: In terms of actual policy, they’re as futile as the 40-odd votes to repeal the law that House Republicans have already cast.

GOP hardliners are like a drunk in a bar fight threatening to whip somebody twice his size if only his friends would let go of his arms.

It’s all over but the shouting.

Even if Republicans make big gains in the 2014 congressional elections, they can’t possibly win enough votes to overcome a presidential veto. What’s more, chances of capturing the White House in 2016 on a platform of canceling millions of Americans’ health insurance benefits appear so remote as to be downright delusional. Like it or not, the ACA is here to stay.

Indeed, governors and legislatures in previously recalcitrant states including New Hampshire, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Utah and Virginia are considering Medicaid expansion they’d previously shunned. Despite early signup problems with the federal HealthCare.gov exchange, signups for individual private policies have increased to where it now appears the ACA will come close to meeting its projected goal of 7 million enrollees by the March 31 deadline.

Ex-President Ventures Where Some Might Not
By JONATHAN MARTIN FEB. 25, 2014

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — When Alison Lundergan Grimes, Kentucky’s Democratic Senate candidate, welcomed former President Bill Clinton to a fund-raiser here Tuesday, she offered a rendering of recent political history suited for red-state Democrats: Mr. Clinton’s tenure was showered with praise, former President George W. Bush was mildly scorned, and President Obama was implicitly rebuked.

“We all know what the problem is: it’s a Washington, D.C., that just doesn’t understand Kentucky,” Ms. Grimes said.

Her gibes at the capital’s “dysfunction” were chiefly aimed at her likely opponent, Mitch McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, but her nostalgia for the 1990s, when Ms. Grimes was in her teens, and her lament about the present was also aimed at linking herself to Mr. Clinton and distancing herself from Mr. Obama.

    • Kennymack1971

And if she loses to the Turtle I don’t want to hear a damn thing about trying to pin her loss on PBO.

      • conlakappa

She already is writing her whining piece for Salon/HuffPost now. Her running might be as much about raising her profile so that she can be in Candidate Inevitable’s cabinet as it is about her winning against Mitchy-Mitch.

    • creolechild

This may help her lose, not win, the election. The clear advantage here is emphasizing the benefits of Obamacare and the man who helped make it possible…not going in the other direction. As for the Clintons…well.. you know how I feel about them and I’ll just leave it at that.

      • Kennymack1971

You’re on point. As long as she kept the focus on the worthlessness that is Mitch McConnell she was doing fine. Once she gets into the Morning Joe suckers game of dissing PBO she’s screwing up. You piss PBOs supporters to appeal to who? Racist “Reagan Democrats” who weren’t going to vote for you anyway? Dumb strategy.

    • jds09

I got mixed feelings about this. I recently read a quote from PBO that said he understood not using his name in certain areas. I think this is good use of Bubba.

      • creolechild

I understand that approach Jds and agree that its a reasonable strategy under the circumstances but bashing PBO with the Clintons sitting on the sidelines makes me feel some kind of way…that is not healthy.

        • Daltex82

” but bashing PBO with the Clintons sitting on the sidelines makes me feel some kind of way…”
Me too creolechild, but that could just be my abject dislike and distrust of the Clintons.

          • creolechild

Abject dislike and distrust is warranted when a former Secretary of State has no problem with bashing a sitting president who gave her a position in his administration when he really didn’t have to. What did she bring to the table during her tenure? What did she accomplish as a New York senator?

            I’ll wait…

          • Daltex82

That could be a long wait! LOL

          • MsKitty

And helped to pay her campaign debt, or am I mis-remembering that?

          • conlakappa

No, you’re not. He sent all of his supporters a note of “let’s help her out,” which is far more gracious than I can recall a pol being of a former opponent.

        • jds09

Sometimes I think PBO just lets people have shit. While Billary get off diminishing him in the short-term in the long-term they get the eternal side-eye from the Obama Coalition. So what if HRC can carry white people in the southern states, AZ and TX, she won’t get to 270. And despite Bubba’s confidence in his ability to persuade, the comments he makes now will come back to bite him.

I don’t like it but I can live with it. It’s about scoreboard and getting Mitch out of there. That would be a serious wound to the establishment wing of the Republican party.

      • Miranda

I can’t understand why in a state that is the poster child for needing and wanting and SIGNING UP for Obamacare in incredibly high percentages – a Dem candidate would feel the need to disparage PBO. But then again…..how many times have we read these stories of poor white people who have signed up and been SAVED by Obamacare and still their racist asses will not give PBO the credit.

        • jds09

PBO has embraced it, telling OFA to use people’s dislike of him in their pitch to sign people up. I think it’s a strategic move to get people to think policy rather than personalities.

    • goldenstar

Here’s what’s weird about this: There is no need to bash PBO. This is a person who works with EVERYBODY to improve the lives of ALL Americans. So, he works with the Clintons, Kerry, and others in his party and he works with Gates, Hagel and others not in his party. What’s not to like?

So, the Clintons grab as many of the brains in the Obama organizations to work for them and then have the God blessed nerve to stomp on him and his work. It. is. this.

      • Also: waaaaah, waaaaaah, waaaaaaah.

    • Daltex82

They’re funny. They don’t and have never respected President Obama or his Administration. Most stories about PBO or his Administration is prefaced with something negative, a distortion, a half truth or in some cases a flat out lie. Most of these folks can barely contain their disdain for him yet they expect to have unfettered access..Please! Compton and the rest of her media whinners can find an empty stadium and pick a seat.

      • rikyrah

        never EVER forget that study.
90% of the stories about this President have been NEGATIVE.
tell me HOW that wasn’t by design.

    • Kennymack1971

I take this as a sign that PBOs poll numbers must be solid because they’re crying about “access” again. They’re pissed that after all the “Gates” and all the RW BS the Obama administration is still here, still standing tall and putting in work for the American people. They hate it that this WH peeped game on their asses a long time ago and stepped right around them to get their message out. All that’s left to say…stay mad assholes, by all means…STAY MAD

    • jziglar

F them ! No one cares or respects you. Maybe if you practiced real journalism like they did in the past then you would have more access.

    • creolechild

They’re so funny–in an unenlightened frightening kind of way. So, let me get this straight…they’re perturbed and have their boxers and thongs in a twist because the White House is using media in all its varied forms as it should be used, which is to convey its message without a filter. Who needs THEM with their distortions, misinformation, and outright lies?

I think PBO has truly changed the game and what they’re really concerned about is job security because the public has finally realized that no matter how you slice it they’re not “real” journalists but their slips are showing and now they’re embarrassed.

      Gives me life….

    • MsKitty

Zeke Miller ‏@ZekeJMiller 12h@AnnCompton going after @jearnest44′s West Wing Week & other @WhiteHouse “news” programs: “They do their own news. They go around us”

Well duh! That’s the whole point.

    • Ann Compton needs to look at her colleague, Jon Karl, and how he purposely reported false information given to him by GOP operatives. THAT’S why PBO’s admin goes around them. Can’t Truss It.

    – — Joe Biden: ‘Hatred’ Is Behind Voter ID Laws — –
    – — – — –Vice President Joe Biden on Tuesday denounced new voter rules as a form of “hatred” and advocated for legislation promoting voter rights ata reception in honor of Black History Month.

Biden expressed disappointment in the Supreme Court’s decision to gut a centerpiece of the Voting Rights Act last year, according to a pool report, and singled out new voting legislation in North Carolina, Alabama, and Texas as examples of where voters’ rights are in danger.

“These guys never go away. Hatred never, never goes away,” Biden said at the event at the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C. “The zealotry of those who wish to limit the franchise cannot be smothered by reason.”

The vice president was optimistic that Congress would address the

Spike Lee’s Amazing Rant Against Gentrification: ‘We Been Here!’
    By Joe Coscarelli

Speaking Tuesday night in Brooklyn, blocks away from his company headquarters and his father’s apartment, Spike Lee went off on how the neighborhood has changed. The filmmaker, wearing a Knicks beanie, orange socks, blue Nikes, and “Defend Brooklyn” hoodie, was at Pratt Institute for a lecture in honor of African American History Month, surrounded by locals, when he was nearly asked a question about “the other side” of the gentrification debate. “Let me just kill you right now,” Lee interrupted, “because there was some bullshit article in the New York Timessaying ‘the good of gentrification.’” (See: “Argument Over a Brownstone Neighborhood” and New York’s “Is Gentrification All Bad?”)

“I don’t believe that,” said Lee. And for the next seven minutes he explained, with passion, humor, and a fair amount of f-words.

This rant is so on point. I can see the beginning signs of gentrification in neigborhoods like Sunny South Dallas and Bonton it’s got me more than a little concerned. You want to see the areas improve, but you don’t want them to push out those lifelong residents and I can see that happening.

      • Daltex82

You want to see the areas improve, but you don’t want them to push out those lifelong residents and I can see that happening.
I see it as well. The new housing being built at Bonton is a total transformation of that area and if the infrastructure that the City envisions (supermarket and other retail outlets) ever comes to fruition it’s hard to imagine long time residents not being pushed out.

        • conlakappa

          • conlakappa

Too true. What can happen too is that the greedy, get-a-quick-buck descendants of people who worked really hard to be able to buy property sell it to a speculator. That happened when my great-aunt died and her heirs sold for dirt-cheap the acres her husband had left her in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She had a wee shack but a bunch of land around it that soon became a townhouse community.

Children Barred From Writing About Malcolm X in NYC School

The school has acknowledged it was “a mistake to leave kids with the impression that Malcolm X is an inappropriate subject to study”
    By Marc Santia

Some parents of elementary school students in Queens say their children were barred from writing essays about Malcolm X for Black History Month.

Parents of children at PS 201 in Flushing said the fourth-graders were given the assigment to write about a prominent black leader, choosing from a list of names.

One family says a teacher took Malcolm X’s name off the list, saying he was violent and not a good choice.

Angel Minor said her 9-year-old son told her: “Mom, we were doing black history projects and I was told we can’t do Malcolm X because he was violent.”

    SAHIL KAPUR – FEBRUARY 26, 2014, 10:04 AM EST525

In the span of one day, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) came out against cutting entitlements and for cutting entitlements.

On Monday afternoon, he tweeted a quote of his in Reuters attacking the cuts enacted under Obamacare to private insurers under Medicare Advantage.

Then on Tuesday, he criticized President Obama for failing to “get serious” about entitlement reform. (Obama withdrew support for cutting Social Security benefits last week.)

Reid Insists on $10.10 Wage as Some in Party Set to Talk

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid won’t consider raising the U.S. minimum wage to any level less than $10.10 an hour, though some of his fellow Democrats say they are ready to negotiate a lower amount.[…] Reid yesterday delayed a vote on minimum wage legislation, which he intended to bring up next week.[….]

Asked if there would be a compromise to raise the wage and still keep it below the $10.10-an-hour level Obama endorsed in his Jan. 28 State of the Union address, Reid responded, “Not with me.” Reid blamed the delay in considering a minimum-wage increase on Republicans’ “continued obstruction” in the Senate.[….]

Ole Miss Fraternity Suspended For Hanging a Noose on Statue of Civil Rights Hero

Three freshmen were expelled from their fraternity at University of Mississippi (popularly known as Ole Miss) Friday for hanging a noose on a statue of James Meredith, a civil rights hero who was the first African American to attend the university. The chapter has also been suspended indefinitely by the national Sigma Phi Epsilon organization.

Ole Miss and local police concluded that the three white 19-year-olds from Georgia were responsible for hanging the noose and plastering an old Georgia flag bearing the Confederate symbol on the statue’s face. The students could face criminal charges, if Ole Miss police get their way, and the FBI is investigating the incident as a possible hate crime.[….]

Barclays Telling Hip-Hop Acts to Keep It Down
    By Adam Martin

After months of noise complaints, it’s come to this. Barclays Center says it will tell bass-heavy acts to keep it down in order to stop bothering the neighbors. The arena has an ongoing problem with heavy bass from concerts rumbling the insides of neighbors’ apartments. And while the $3,200 fine it incurred hardly puts a crimp in the operation’s finances, seething neighborhood wrath eventually might. So in addition to new soundproofing, special acoustic baffles, and a “sound concierge,” the New York Daily News reports the arena is taking an old-fashioned approach: “hip-hop artists like former arena investor Jay Z and Kanye West will be asked to lower their concert volume.” Novel!

Instead of whining about the lack of access to PBO’s admin, journalists should complain about blatant examples of bias like this:

Newspaper Denies Attorney General Profile Is Donald Trump’s Revenge

“Bullshit,” says the paper. “Definitely meant to be negative,” says the writer who first got, then dropped, the assignment.

posted on February 25, 2014 at 4:34pm EST

The New York Observer Tuesday, Feb. 25 published a long and negative profile of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

The piece is also an extensive and detailed defense of Donald Trump,
defending him in particular against Schneiderman’s allegations that he
profited from a “scam university.” It mentions him more than 90 times.
One sub-headline in the piece: “The Case Against Donald Trump: Too Much,Too Late?”

Trump himself tweeted about an upcoming article in December that would help him “get even” in December.

“Too bad about New York Magazine, but there’s a much bigger one out
there, currently doing a story on me to get even, that I’ll soon
    discuss,” Trump said.

The Observer is owned and published by Jared Kushner, Trump’s
son-in-law. Trump is currently being sued by Schneiderman for $40
million saying Trump University, Trump’s for-profit investment school,
    engaged in illegal business practices.

Malcolm X’s dedication to the truth is something to which all Muslims aspire – Posted February 22, 2014

The revolutionary leader strived to live up to Islamic ideals. But it was his humility that made him a hero to us. When Malcolm X split with the Nation of Islam, he traveled on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, where he was exposed to mainstream Islam – the Islam that the majority of the Muslim world practices.[….] It was there that Malcolm X first witnessed unity among different people, irrespective of their race. He wrote of his trip:

But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white … But on this pilgrimage, what I have seen, and experienced, has forced me to rearrange much of my thought-patterns previously held, and to toss aside some of my previous conclusions. This was not too difficult for me. Despite my firm convictions, I have always been a man who tries to face facts.[….]

This was typical Malcolm X: to discard false understandings in light of reality, to remain dedicated to the truth. Today, many will remember the assassination of the revolutionary civil rights activist and reformer. Many will also undoubtedly lay claim to his legacy: his unswerving dedication to equality, unity and the truth. For many Muslims, this is what made Malcolm X’s life both inspirational and exemplary. We saw him as one of our own. We still do.[….]

An Amazing Village Designed Just For People With Dementia

Centuries after Shakespeare wrote about King Lear’s symptoms, there’s still no perfect way to care for sufferers of dementia and Alzheimer’s. In the Netherlands, however, a radical idea is being tested: Self-contained “villages” where people with dementia shop, cook, and live together—safely. We, as a population, are aging rapidly. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, one in three seniors today dies with dementia.[….]

Hogeweyk, from a certain perspective, seems like a fortress: A solid podium of apartments and buildings, closed to the outside world with gates and security fences. But, inside, it is its own self-contained world: Restaurants, cafes, a supermarket, gardens, a pedestrian boulevard, and more. The idea, explains Hogeweyk’s creators, is to design a world that maintains as much a resemblance to normal life as possible—without endangering the patients.[….]

It’s getting to the point where those who aren’t already leery of interacting with police officers (black/brown and other communities of color) because you’re unsure of how they’ll respond will start to hesitate when it’s necessary to call them for help. I guess, then– and only then–will action be taken to rein them in.

        • conlakappa

Did you see the case about a traffic stop in which the police basically started whaling on a black guy after smashing his window and dragging him out of the car. A second dash cam caught that the cops were the aggressors from the moment the stop happened, yelling stuff like “stop resisting arrest!” that was fairly reminiscent of the juvenile “stop hitting yourself.” The man had his hands up in the air as soon as they approached his car.

          • creolechild

College Student Shocked by the Food the Cafeteria Threw Away Decides to Do Something

Ben Simon, a senior at the University of Maryland happened to be in
the cafeteria around closing time and saw the amount of food being
dumped in the trash. He asked if he and his friends could donate the leftovers, and they said, “Sure.” That was his first food delivery, in September 2011.

“And ever since then, it was like, ‘What if this was at every college?'” Simon recalls. Thus began the Food Recovery Network, which has diverted 271,000 meals to churches and shelters that feed hungry people. Today college students across the nation have signed up and mobilized to address hunger issues in “the most commonsense way possible” — saving leftover food that would otherwise be thrown away.(WATCH the video below)

About Bubba Campaigning for Grimes in Kentucky.

The obviousness of this is grating.

It was THE TRUTH that the Hillary SuperPAC was going to sit out the 2014 Elections.

They didn’t give a shyt if the Dems could get back the House or Keep the Senate.

If we turn the House – all we need is muthafuckin’ 18 seats…

Then Nancy Smash gets back her gavel.

We keep the Senate, and the President can continue on his goals.

IF the President accomplishes stuff the last 2 years like the first two years..

Then there is no need for Hillary to be THE SAVIOR, which is the bullshyt they were gonna peddle if the 2014 elections go bad.

We got at least a dozen states putting in place things to curb VOTING RIGHTS..

And the Hillary SuperPac was going to sit out 2014?

We got Bubba stomping for Grimes in red-ass Kentucky,

But, we got State Senator Nina Turner running for Secretary of State in OHIO, where you know she WOULD PROTECT THE VOTE, and you don’t hear anything about Bubba going there, do you?

President Barack Obama has shown the way..

You don’t need one muthafuckin’ Southern State to become President of the United States.

He has shown the electoral path to render the South ELECTORALLY IRRELEVANT.

But, that path includes OHIO< so, IMO, stomping for Nina Turner to be SOS and protect the vote in OHIO, is far more a return on value than stomping for Grimes in red Kentucky.

These mofos think somebody is playing with them.

    NOBODY is playing with them.

Here’s the thing when dealing with Hill ‘n’ Bill: they are shameless. Nothing and no behavior is too low for them. It will only get worse. Bet on it. Greetings Rikyrah and POU.

Thank you for outlining the Clintons’ continuing bitch ass behavior. One should actually give a damn about the future of the country if one wants to be president, not just care about one’s own ass.

I am working hard not to hate these people.

    • What I don’t get is how they think this behavior will dovetail with Hillary’s presidential aspirations. Can they really not see past their own noses far enough to realize that without a Dem House and Senate presumed President Hillary won’t be able to do a damn thing? SMH.

      • JojoRaze

They learned the wrong lesson from 2008. They are convinced PBO stole something from them as an undeserving affirmative action recipient in 08 instead outhustling them. Instead of learning from PBO’s hustle they want to insult and ignore him, which is why their critique is always about personalities in DC and not policies.

Their inability to understand that they cannot get the enthusiasm, online donations, volunteers and votes that PBO did and insult the man who created that infrastructure, even if they have PBO’s donor list is what’s gonna take them down, again.

It’s very simple but the don’t want to accept it: You can’t win the Obama coalition and insult Obama. PBO is the 21 St century FDR and Reagan -he’s what has built up the Democratic Party and what unites it. No Democrat insults FDR and no Repubs insults Reagan because they are the parties’ ideals. That’s what PBO is now and Billary don’t want to understand that. And it’s gonna take us POC, and even the emos, who don’t like Hillary either because she refused to apologize for her Iraq war vote and clung to John Edwards and then PBO, to remind her. She came in third in Iowa because of bad policy and her refusal to WORK for votes.

Long story short-they want to act like Repubs by attacking PBO and diminishing/lying/coopting his accomplishments and yet get the votes of Democrats who love PBO. Good luck on that to them.

So basically, they just arrested this black man….because…
Texas police defend DUI arrest of black man who blew 0.00 on Breathalyzer

Despite negative blood and breath tests, man arrested for DWI
    By Tony Plohetski

To Austin attorney Daniel Betts, driving while intoxicated can sometimes be what he calls “an opinion crime.” Law enforcement must decide, sometimes within only a matter of minutes, whether a person is intoxicated and should go to jail — or be allowed to simply drive way.

On the night Austin police arrested his client, they made the wrong choice, he says – his opinion bolstered by a voluntary breath and blood test showing Larry Davis wasn’t intoxicated when he was arrested Jan. 13, 2013. He tested 0.00 on a Breathalyzer – the lowest possible reading — and the blood test, which took months to be tested, came back negative.

“My reaction was just shock that it happened,” Betts said of the arrest, after watching a police dash cam video and reviewing the evidence.

Deliveries with heart fund Ligonier program

[….] Wynkoop recently made national and international headlines when he posted a personal message, along with his mobile phone number, to customers and local residents on Facebook announcing that he would deliver medical supplies to the ill and elderly so that they wouldn’t have to battle the bitter cold, with no food ordering required. His offer caught attention from all over the world — letters, phone calls and donations began rolling in praising the gesture.[….] Checks and credit card contributions arrived, as well.

Wynkoop thought about positive avenues in which to distribute the money, and came up with Ligonier Meals on Wheels. He matched the donation amount, with a final presentation check for $2,000.[….]
Wynkoop is also planning to set up three $500 scholarships at the Ligonier Valley High School[….] In addition, he recently delivered a check for $1,500 to the police department so that K-9 Officer Blek can be well protected.[….] Wynkoop, who is a nurse, a former paramedic and fire- fighter, plans to continue his medicinal delivery campaign, hoping that he can reach even more people in need.

FBI Never Revealed It Had Al Qaeda Mole Who Met Bin Laden
    By Richard Esposito

The FBI had a mole inside al Qaeda who met with Osama bin Laden eight years prior to 9/11 and knew he planned to finance terror attacks, but the bureau declined to tell Congressional investigators or the 9/11 Commission about the mole, sources involved in the case told NBC News.

…The Egyptian-born Youssef filed suit against the FBI in 2003, alleging that the Bureau retaliated against him after he lodged complaints against the counterterrorism unit. In 2008, he told Congress that the FBI was unable to protect the U.S. against a major attack from Middle Eastern terrorists. He also criticized the agency for a shortage of Arabic speakers, and said it relied on translation services.

    2014 is gonna be interesting.

USDA Invests $3 Million Into Program To Boost Honeybee Numbers

Commercial and wild honeybee populations have been declining for more than a decade in the U.S. and across the globe, a loss that poses a major threat to the world’s food supply. Scientists have scrambled to determine exactly what’s causing the bees to die, and what can be done to help save them.

In an attempt to boost honeybee numbers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is investing $3 million into a program that pays farmers in Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin to reseed their fields with bee-friendly cover crops like clover and alfalfa, as well as providing incentives for farmers to make changes to their farm so that their farm animals can move freely from pasture to pasture, allowing vegetation in pastures to recover and grow plants that bees are attracted to.

The USDA chose the five Midwestern states because most beekeepers bring their bees there during the summer — the Midwest acts as a “resting ground” for the bees, which gather pollen for the winter months there.[….]
