Wednesday Open Thread: The Black Madonna & Child (Dedicated to Megyn Kelly)

GOOD MORNING POU!

We continue our look at The Black Madonna and Child

Black Madonna of Częstochowa
Częstochowa, Poland

From Wikipedia:

The Black Madonna of Częstochowa (Polish: Czarna Madonna or Matka Boska Częstochowska, Latin: Imago thaumaturga Beatae Virginis Mariae Immaculatae Conceptae, in Claro Monte) is a revered icon of the Virgin Mary housed at the Jasna Góra Monastery in Częstochowa, Poland.

The icon

The origins of the icon and the date of its composition are still hotly contested among scholars. The difficulty in dating the icon stems from the fact that the original image was painted over, after being badly damaged by Hussite raiders in 1430. Medieval restorers unfamiliar with the encaustic method found that the paints they applied to the damaged areas “simply sloughed off the image” according to the medieval chronicler Risinius, and their solution was to erase the original image and to repaint it on the original panel, which was believed to be holy because of its legendary origin as a table top from the home of the Holy Family. The painting displays a traditional composition well known in the icons of Eastern Orthodoxy. The Virgin Mary is shown as the “Hodegetria” (“One Who Shows the Way”). In it the Virgin directs attention away from herself, gesturing with her right hand toward Jesus as the source of salvation. In turn, the child extends his right hand toward the viewer in blessing while holding a book of gospels in his left hand. The icon shows the Madonna in fleur de lys robes.

History

Lucan tradition

The icon of Our Lady of Częstochowa has been intimately associated with Poland for the past six hundred years. Its history prior to its arrival in Poland is shrouded in numerous legends which trace the icon’s origin to St. Luke who painted it on a cedar table top from the house of the Holy Family.[1][2]

Arrival in Częstochowa

One of the oldest documents from Jasna Góra states that the picture travelled from Jerusalem, via Constantinople and Belz,[2] to finally reach Częstochowa in August 1382 by Władysław Opolczyk, Duke of Opole.[citation needed] However more recent Ukrainian sources state that it was taken by Władysław Opolski from the Castle of Belz, when the town was incorporated into the Polish kingdom and that earlier in its history it was brought to Belz with much ceremony and honors by Knyaz Lev I of Galicia.[3] The golden fleur-de-lis painted on the Virgin’s blue veil parallel the azure, semee de lis, or of the French royal coat of arms and the most likely explanation for their presence is that icon had been present in Hungary during the reign of either Charles I of Hungary and/or Louis the Great, the Hungarian kings of the Anjou dynasty, who probably had the fleur-de-lis of their family’s coat of arms painted on the icon. This would suggest that the icon was probably originally brought to Jasna Gora by the Pauline monks from their founding monastery in Hungary.

Coronation as Queen and Protectress of Poland

The Black Madonna is credited with miraculously saving the monastery of Jasna Góra (English: Bright Mount) from a 17th century Swedish invasion,[2] The Deluge.

The Siege of Jasna Góra took place in the winter of 1655 during the Second Northern War / The Deluge — as the Swedish invasion of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth is known. The Swedes were attempting to capture the Jasna Góra monastery in Częstochowa. Their month-long siege however, was ineffective, as a small force consisting of monks from the Jasna Gora monastery led by their Prior and supported by local volunteers, mostly from the szlachta (Polish nobility), fought off the numerically superior Germans mercenaries, saved their sacred icon, the Black Madonna of Częstochowa and, according to some accounts, turned the course of the war.

This event led King John II Casimir Vasa to “crown” Our Lady of Częstochowa (“the Black Madonna“) as Queen and Protector of Poland in the cathedral of Lwów on April 1, 1656.

Legends about the Madonna’s appearance

Another legend concerning the Black Madonna of Częstochowa is that the presence of the holy painting saved its church from being destroyed in a fire, but not before the flames darkened the fleshtone pigments.[citation needed]

The legend concerning the two scars on the Black Madonna’s right cheek is that the Hussites stormed the Pauline monastery in 1430, plundering the sanctuary. Among the items stolen was the icon. After putting it in their wagon, the Hussites tried to get away but their horses refused to move. They threw the portrait down to the ground and one of the plunderers drew his sword upon the image and inflicted two deep strikes. When the robber tried to inflict a third strike, he fell to the ground and squirmed in agony until his death. Despite past attempts to repair these scars, they [who? when?] had difficulty in covering up those slashes (as they found out that the painting was painted with tempera infused with diluted wax). In commemoration of the attack, two slashes on her right cheek were made by a pen. [when? by whom?] [1]

Another legend states that, as the robber struck the painting twice, the face of the Virgin Mary started to bleed; in a panic, the scared Hussites retreated and left the painting.[citation needed]

Present day

Because of the Black Madonna, Częstochowa is regarded as the most popular shrine in Poland, with many Polish Catholics making a pilgrimage there every year. Often, people will line up on the side of the road to hand provisions to the pilgrims as those who walk the distance to Częstochowa walk the entire day and have little means to get things for themselves.[who?]

This is most white folks achilles heel. They really believe that POCs over the ages have bought their crap. That our silence was because we agreed with them not a strategic move on our parts.

“I don’t care if he’s from Lithuania or Laos, I don’t care. Santa Claus
is white,” Boortz said. “He’s been white for brown, black, white for
    ages.”

Listen Boortz (and all the white people that secretly agree with the above statement) There were (and are) a lot of black families whose parents happily gave their kids brown crayons to color in the faces of Santa in their homes, who taught their kids part of “Santa’s Magic” was he become black in their neighborhoods and the white Santas in the Mall were his helpers. Really, how could there be two Santas in the same mall? Black parents have answers for everything, seriously, they know a lot. They’re especially good at using every opportunity they can to prepare their children to thrive and learn to have joy in a racist America.

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/libertarian-radio-host-santa-race-debate-an-attack-on-the-american-family-structure

    • Miranda

But why everything gotta be all BLACK now??!?!? LOL, that was what the caller said to Boortz to spark his stupid tirade. Last night I heard a caller into a local show complain that the host likes to “bring up the race stuff all the time!”……I kept wondering what the “race stuff” was that this person heard ALL THE TIME. See….it was sooooo much better when we didn’t say ANYTHING about any injustice or falsehood, because that meant we were HAPPY! (see duck dynasty dude’s comment to GQ). Its hard for some white people to understand why we’re choosing to be so UNhappy now with all the race talk and whatnot! Its upsetting them that we are so upset. So stop with the black this and black that! Then we can all go back to HAPPY!

    – - – -Mia Love has returned to the political spotlight.
This up-and-coming mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah drew national attention last year with her run for Congress against the incumbent, Democrat Jim Matheson. A Tea Party favorite, Love made her national debut with a speech at the 2012 Republican National Convention. Yet, even with fellow Mormon Mitt Romney at the top of the ticket in this red state of Utah, Love lost the race, albeit by 768 votes.

Love (no relation to the writer) announced she would once again run against Matheson, a centrist, in the 2014 race for the 4th District in the Salt Lake City suburbs. That district was created in 2010. The Matheson-Love rematch promised to be contentious, just as the
first race was the most expensive in Utah historyat a combined $11.2 million. But with Matheson, 53, now announcing he will not seek reelection, Mia Love is the odds on favorite to win the previously leaning-Democratic seat.

Valerie Jarrett says 99% of Obama time w tech CEO’s on Tuesday was talking about NSA surveillance + that Obama initiated it

I’m sorry, but whether Snowden and other yahoos are angry that their email metadata got loaded into a pattern recognition program alongside trillions of other records is something I could give a shit about. Would love to ask those CEOs what they’re doing to increase non-white male participation in their industry. Were their industry more diverse, NSA wouldn’t be an obsession; would be just one concern of many and not even the biggest concern. The tech industry has the potential to significantly impact quality of life, especially for African Americans (who I think could do extremely well in that industry if our participation rates increase). They need to stop deflecting with the dramas of the day like Snowald.

    The Gospel According to Phil
    BY DREW MAGARY

On why he voted Romney in 2012:
“If I’m lost at three o’clock in a major metropolitan area…I ask myself: Where would I rather be trying to walk with my wife and children? One of the guys who’s running for president is out of Chicago, Illinois, and the other one is from Salt Lake City, Utah. [Editor's note: Romney is from Boston, not Salt Lake City.] Where would I rather be turned around at three o’clock in the morning? I opted for Salt Lake City. I think it would be safer.”

On growing up in pre-civil-rights-era Louisiana:
“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field…. They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!… Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.”

    On health insurance:
“Temporary is all you’re going to get with any kind of health care, except the health care I’m telling you about. That’s eternal health care, and it’s free…. I’ve opted to go with eternal health care instead of blowing money on these insurance schemes.”

    Getting an earful on Obamacare
Stutzman’s invitation draws its share of cheers, jeers

    excerpt:
Albright doesn’t want the Affordable Care Act repealed, which Stutzman and the Republican-controlled House have voted to do numerous times. Albright told his congressman that his monthly payment for family health coverage will drop from $3,800 to $1,700 by enrolling in a plan offered through the much-maligned law.

Albright said most of his dozen employees also are enrolling in Affordable Care Act plans and will have coverage for the first time. “If the Republican Party thinks they’re going to kill Obamacare, you guys need to realize that those nine people that I add on, are they going to vote Republican ever again if you take their health care from them?”

    Stutzman responded: “No, probably not.”

Albright later said, “I think we’ve lost compassion in this country for the person who can’t afford to go to the doctor.”

Can’t you just feel the giving spirit of Mike Bloomberg here as he talks about the New York Times series on homelessness which focused on an 11 yr old girl named Dasani?

“This kid was dealt a bad hand. I don’t know quite why. That’s just the way God works. Sometimes some of us are lucky and some of us are not,” he said.

wow…..and also, before folks start getting all weepy bout Dasani’s plight…well being homeless in NYC is loads better than being homeless….somewhere else.

“Just think about that. Yes, we have too many people that we have to do a better job at helping. But the answer is to really take a look and see how well we do versus others. And I couldn’t be more proud of–I don’t think there’s any administration of any city that has ever done as much to help those in need as we have done in this city,” he declared. “Should we stop there? No, not at all. But if you are poor and homeless you’d be better off in New York City than anyplace else.”

Addressing Politicker directly, Mr. Bloomberg also took a direct shot at the media: “I think one of the problems is a lot of journalists have never looked around the world–your smirk shows you haven’t been outside the country and don’t know what poverty means elsewheres.”

I’m on record re: what I think of Maddow and her claims of civil rights expertise (she has none; she knows little about black people IMO). That said, I’ve got to give it to Steve Benen and the Maddow Show on this one—THIS is how you portray a popular POTUS’ nod to your community:

    @TheObamaDiary
‘Obama highly progressive in advancing LGBT rights, his choice in Olympic delegation sends a signal to the world’
    http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/obama-sends-putin-olympic-message

What would the sole patrol be saying now? “President Obama refuses to boycott, signalling his agreement with Putin. And with only a handful of selected athletes being from our community, President Obama ONCE AGAIN telegraphs his disinterest in African Americans and his tendency to look down on and talk down to the people who put him in office.”

Which is by far the smarter media strategy? To me it’s fairly obvious.

    • BarbinAtlSouth

On tv last night, I think LOD named 3 members of the delegation being sent, and I’m pretty sure all of them are LGBT.

Your shoes are filled with blood before you realize PBO cut ya.

      • conlakappa

The imagery! You have been on fire these past couple of days, woman!

        • BarbinAtlSouth

          Thanks!

      • gn

Yup, the GLBT media chooses to highlight gay people in the delegation and trumpet their favor with the WH. To me, this stands in contrast to times past when they pursued a more abusive form of activism (think Choi), and also calls to mind some members of the sole patrol who choose to highlight (and at times, invent) snubs to the black community rather than the many ways in which the WH has actually shown favor. I’m personally done with culture wars but in terms of a media strategy, just wanted to note that it makes more sense to applaud indications of favor rather than spread the message that the WH views our community poorly. Kind of like when Melissa Harris Perry insisted on depicting one of PBO’s speeches as a jab at single black mothers rather than an affirmation of our community’s history of pulling together and overcoming obstacles. We won’t have the power and access of privileged majority white groups any time soon who not only are afforded more opportunities to self-define but have also helped generously helped themselves to our legacy, however I think that the sole patrol can be way more strategic and less tantrum-y, reactionary, and short-term. And definitely, PBO is a shade-thrower par none.

        • BarbinAtlSouth

Some folks think being the victim helps them.

It never has. Real allies are too busy getting the work done to complain, and non-allies think you get too much anyway and playing victim is just whining.

          • gn

I don’t think they’re playing the victim per se, so much as trying to convince black people that PBO doesn’t rep for us and expressing that dismay without thinking of the effects of that strategy. Less generously, some members of the sole patrol have a “truth to power” hustle going and will declare any and all to be sellouts because that’s good for business. Either way, we don’t have the power of privileged groups to self-define. Using the small media perch which we do have to amplify anti-black messages like the “excuses” Morehouse speech sole patrol messaging fail is more harmful than not. I wish people would cut it out, sigh.

      • qosine

“Your shoes are filled with blood before realize PBO cut ya” Vivid. True, true, true.

Of course, if we’re already in international-incident land, I doubt that will happen. The wealthy there are probably wondering why she had to pay her maid that much!

      • malletgirl02

        Afluenza.

    • BarbinAtlSouth

Okay, let’s say they took her diplomatic credentials into account . What happens? I get them being upset that she was put in jail, but she’s breaking a law. What do you do?

    • malletgirl02

In a cell with drug addicts heaven forfend! More seriously if she really did what she is accused of she is way worst than the drug addicts. Atleast drug addiction is a medical condition.

Error of the Year: ’60 Minutes’ Benghazi report

As is often the case with Error of the Year, the award is given partly because of the mistake itself, and partly because of the mistake’s fallout.

In late October “60 Minutes” aired a report that called into question the official version of what happened when the U.S. diplomatic compound was attacked in Benghazi, Libya. At the core of the story was a source, Dylan Davies, who worked as a security contractor for the State Department. Davies had a book coming out that purported to share new facts about what happened that night, and what he did.

Problem one: he lied to the show about what he did and saw, thereby making a core piece of evidence in the “60 Minutes” counter-narrative false and undercutting the entire segment.

The plot to kill the U.S. Postal Service
    Gray Brechin
    Published 5:59 pm, Monday, December 16, 2013

No other nation in the world possesses the cultural heritage so nobly embodied in America’s prewar post offices and the New Deal works of art they often contain. Until recently, however, most Americans were unaware that what they paid for and rightfully own is being sold off wholesale, let alone who is profiting from those sales.

That is changing. The Wall Street Journal and the Los Angeles Times have reported on how Berkeley has become the national center of resistance not only to the sale of its own Renaissance-style main post office but also to public properties elsewhere. The Berkeley-based National Post Office Collaborate recently won a preliminary injunction to halt the sale of the historic downtown post office in Stamford, Conn., partly on the grounds that theU.S. Postal Service should abide by the National Environmental Protection Act from which it has given itself a blanket exemption.

The Times also cited an e-book, “Going Postal,” by independent investigative journalistPeter Byrne. It found that the real estate giant CBRE, which the Postal Service has exclusively contracted to manage its leased and owned properties, has often sold them at below-market rates to buyers with direct ties to CBRE itself. Private-equity investorRichard C. Blum, husband of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairs CBRE and has a large stake in the company. Byrne found, in at least one instance, Feinstein personally intervened in a sale that could have benefited her husband’s firm.

The fire sale of postal properties is a textbook case of a favored few squeezing profits from a manufactured crisis. In an April 10 letter to Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe claimed that e-mail’s inroads into first-class mail delivery have forced him to radically downsize his workforce and sell the public’s property. He neglected to add that the “reform” – read privatization – of the Postal Service has long been a stated goal of conservative think tanks. That reform could be accomplished by bankrupting the Postal Service.

I don’t understand how this fight to save the USPS has not taken off. Congress ignores it.

      • Miranda

Well its Congress that’s killing it…the GOP has had its sight on the USPS for some time now.

    • Kennymack1971

Liberals who claim to be all about the 99% should be all over this story but as usual they’re too busy being told what to be outraged about by the likes of Glenn Greenwald.

      • conlakappa

But… it’s like nonwhites and stuff populating that workforce. Ick!

I have made a goal, thank to everyone at POU. I’ve decided my goal for 2014 is to get one piece of my work into a show. Preferably mid to late 2014. You all have to help me do it lol, because I tend to be lazy.

A friend made a similar goal and now he has just opened at the latest Hyde Park Art Center show and has gotten his greeting cards stocked in a retail location.
