Wednesday Open Thread: The Politics of African American Hair

Good Morning POU!

Today we feature George A. Myers, a late-1800s Cleveland barber whose shop was his ticket to becoming an influential voice in Republican politics at a local, state and national level.

george myers

George Myers was born in Baltimore, Maryland on March 5, 1859. His father, Isaac Myers, was an important figure in the free black community, and was among the first to attempt to organize black laborers into unions. He was elected president of the National Labor Union in 1870. George spent his first ten years in Baltimore. Upon the death of his mother and because of a planned tour of the south by his father to organize black workers, he then was sent to Providence, Rhode Island, to the home of Reverend J. A. W. Burley. He attended the Providence public schools and later transferred to preparatory school at Lincoln University in Chester, Pennsylvania. When his father remarried, he returned to Baltimore to finish high school.

Myers was unable to enroll at Baltimore’s city college because he was black. As a result, he decided to quit school, and moved to Washington, D.C. in 1875 where he became an apprentice house painter. He returned to Baltimore shortly thereafter, however, and became an apprentice barber. This caused his father much displeasure, as the older Myers had wanted his son to enroll at Cornell to study medicine. In 1879 Myers moved to Cleveland and worked at the Weddel House barber shop, becoming its foreman. It was at the Weddel House that he first met Mark Hanna. In 1888, with Liberty E. Holden and other prominent Clevelanders providing the financing, Myers purchased the Hollenden House barbershop.

George Myers’ Hollenden Barber Shop, circa 1900-1910. Photo courtesy of The Western Reserve Historical Society. Myers employed more than 30 people in his enterprise, which used the most modern equipment of the time.

Myers made the shop into one of the most modern and lavish in the nation, employing 17 barbers plus manicurists, porters and podiatrists and installing a telephone at each chair. The hotel was a gathering spot for the social and political elite, and Myers could eventually boast of barbering eight presidents, many congressmen and celebrities including author Mark Twain.

Under Myers’s management the barbershop came to rival the bar as a center for political gossip and activity. It became a mark of distinction to have a personal shaving mug in Myers’s rack. He also made his shop into one of the most modern in the nation, with porcelain fixtures, individual wash basins, sterilizers, humidors and other equipment. He installed telephones at each chair for customer convenience. Myers even claimed that he pioneered the use of manicurists in barber shops and that it was at his suggestion that the Koken Barber Supply Company developed the modern barber chair. He adopted Elbert Hubbard’s description of his shop, “the best barber shop in America,” not only for advertising but out of the pride he took in his work. He was eventually to boast of shaving or barbering eight presidents, dozens of congressmen and other luminaries such as Mark Twain, Lloyd George and Marshall Foch.

Myers’ involvement in “the game,” as he called politics, included serving as a delegate to Republican National Conventions and organizing black votes for GOP candidates.

George Myers finally retired from the barber business in January 1930 because of a serious heart condition. He sold the shop to the hotel and planned a vacation. It never took place. He died in the ticket office on January 17.

Myers was a member of the Elks, Masons and the Caterers Association, a black organization. He was also a member of the City Club of Cleveland. Married in 1896 to Maude Stewart, he was the father of two children, Herbert D. Myers and Dorothy Myers Grantham.

Good Morning POU – Winter Storm Nika has arrived in Northeast Ohio and I cannot make it to work today. I am happy.
Stay safe and warm if you are anywhere close to this storm.

    • conlakappa

We in the close-to-DC area got just a lot of rain and ice. It’s supposed to get up to 50ish today so I’m hopeful that it will melt.

      • crazycanuck

I’m not sure what it is doing here, It snowed but I’m not sure how bad it is outside yet. I’ll know when I leave my nice comfy house in a few minutes. Cannot wait for this winter to be over.

PS You should have gone curling. My sister says it fun lol.

        • conlakappa

Um, no on curling. The husband and I did talk about it last night. Ice, wearing shoes on that ice, and a broom–why would I find this appealing?! I’m not surprised that there is a league in the D.C. area. Any silly pastime is fair game. I cut my teeth on Skee ball at the shore but it’s not something I want to gather friends to do weekly now!

    • conlakappa

    • MsKitty

I’m on the rain side of the storm so no snow day for me. The potholes were fierce on my commute in.

      • conlakappa

You all are having them bad there too? We saw some new craters this morning. D.C. usually brings a guy around with a cup of gravel or some such to fill ‘em!

        • MsKitty

They’ve really taken over in the last couple of days. I hit a half mile stretch that was nothing but huge craters, everybody had to slow down to about 5-10 mph to navigate them. I saw emergency road crews heading there, so maybe they can try to do something or close the road before somebody really messes up their car.

          • conlakappa

One of the main roads in this area [Route 270] was closed early this morning because of pothole repair. It’s a mess. Whatever the new chemicals are doing damage to the roads and elsewhere. It’s darn-near impossible to get it off your clothes and I’d swear this hacking cough I’ve been nursing for just over a week is due to it.

          • goldenstar

Wow! Don’t they use sugar beet juice mixed with the salt?

          • conlakappa

They use some scary chemical composition that seems insoluble once it touches fabric.

    • creolechild

Same here. School is closed and they’re advising people to stay home, if they can.

      • trose1

I am enjoying the day so far.

Singer Clay Aiken launches bid for Congress
Catalina Camia, USA TODAY 8:20 a.m. EST February 5, 2014

Clay Aiken formally declared his bid for Congress, setting aside the singing career he launched on TV’s American Idol to run as a Democrat for a North Carolina seat now held by a Republican.

…He is aiming to take on Rep. Renee Ellmers, chairwoman of the
Republican Women’s Policy Committee, who won a seat long held by a Democrat in 2010. In a radio interview last week, Ellmers dismissed
Aiken’s candidacy by noting, “As we know, he doesn’t always fare that
    well. He was runner up.”

Aiken, 35, will face at least two candidates in the Democratic primary including Keith Crisco, a former state Commerce Secretary.

North Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District, based in the central part of the state and Fayetteville, is considered a conservative area. Republican Mitt Romney won 58% of the vote there in the 2012 presidential election.

The district’s voting registration is about evenly split with 36% Democrats, 36% Republicans and 28% unaffiliated voters, according to a state Board of Elections analysis cited by the News & Observer.

Here’s Chuckles’ response to his erroneous reporting on the CBO’s report on Obamacare and jobs:

    Chuck Todd @chucktodd 14h
    @rchakras @Tortured_Verse @metaquest I simply read the entire report

    • conlakappa

The CBS morning show led with the lie too. The ducks, they are all lined up and in a row.

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Good Morning America also repeated the lie.

        • Miranda

All of them are repeating this lie. They have no intentions of reporting the truth on this, they are going to make this lie stick and later pretend they didn’t actually report it this way.

    • JB20005

Reporting factual information is not Chuck’s job.

He told us so back in September.

    • jds09

I don’t get it….is he admitting he has no reading comprehension skills?

      • crazycanuck

Well as JB says below, he admitted he doesn’t do facts, so I’m not surprised.

    • rikyrah

The college dropout told you that the truth isn’t his concern.

    • creolechild

“I simply skimmed the entire report without fully comprehending what it stated…and took it from there.”

Jarrett to meet CBC on judges
By Mike Lillis – 02/05/14 06:00 AM EST

Senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett will meet with members of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Wednesday amid intensifying concerns over President Obama’s judicial nominations.

Black lawmakers have been up in arms over a number of Obama’s picks for the federal bench, particularly in southern states, where they contend the process don’t reflect the ethnic diversity of the regions they would serve.

Many think Obama gave up too much to Republican senators, who also have a say in the nominees, and plan to tell Jarrett just that in Wednesday’s meeting.

“Win or lose, we’d feel better if there’s a fight,” Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.), a member of the CBC’s judicial nominations working group, said Tuesday. “We have a Herculean task, of course, because of the senators whose conservatism is antithetical to the judicial philosophy of probably anyone who [Obama would prefer].

“But at the same time, the president ought to be able to appoint anyone he wants,” Cleaver added. “And, you know, we want the president to fight for it.”

The CBC wants a fight, but they want PBO to do all the fighting. They admit that Repubs are purposely blocking PBO’s nominees, so what’s stopping the CBC from taking the fight to them? Instead of meeting with Ms. Jarrett, they need to meet with Isakson, Chambliss and their fellow Dem, Leahy.

      • gn

IMO they have no response whatsoever to this issue and so are just deflecting to the WH. How many of these folks have been in Congress for years and years and years yet lack the relationships to challenge these appointments on that level? IMO this is a total deflection. PBO has 18% black judicial appointments, they don’t need to school his admin on this subject and they know it.

        • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

          THANK YOU!

And another thing, where is their list of Black judges they think PBO should nominate?

          • conlakappa

Oh, you’re so cute! You know they have none! It’s like when Cornflakes was asked who the President should have instead of the Jewish men Cornflakes said he was beholden to… and Cornflakes named some more Jewish men. Same song, slightly different beat.

Fake Jews have been known to change their names to hide their Jewry. Not anti-Semitic, just facts.

    • conlakappa

What is are “intensifying concerns?” If you’re mad, say you’re mad. Then explain, with data, your anger. If not, those seats over there? Have all of them.

    • jds09

My favorite analogy these days is “baseball fight.” When the CBC goes after PBO they want a baseball fight, a lot of noise and movement but no real punches thrown. Someone always “holds them back” and/or breaks it up “just in the nick of time.”
Wake me up when they take on the GOP and/or strong-arm their fellow democrats into signing onto some helpful legislation.

      • conlakappa

They are the baseball managers in the days of Earl Weaver and Billy Martin. All pop-veined anger and flying spit.

    • goldenstar

Now, this is gonna be some kinda meeting. Valerie Jarrett does not trifle, especially with folks. just sayin’. She is from Black Snob stock (and I’m not being judgmental; just factual). Business. plain and simple. Wish I could be fly on wall..

Exclusive: Florida Rep Helped Fugitive Embezzlers

Sen. Robert Menendez is under federal investigation for his advocacy on behalf of two Ecuadorian bankers convicted of embezzlement. Turns out he wasn’t the only prominent lawmaker accepting donations and doing favors for the brothers.Florida Republican Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, while she was Chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, sent a letter to federal agencies on behalf of two Ecuadorian bankers convicted of embezzlement who were seeking U.S. residency. She also advocated for their family members, who donated over $20,000 to her campaign.

William and Roberto Isaias, who were convicted in absentia of embezzlement in Ecuador more than a decade ago, have been fighting for the right to avoid extradition and establish residency in the United States. And they’ve had a powerful ally in that quest: Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez, who made phone calls and wrote letters to advance their residency request. Last month, NBC News reported that the FBI was investigating Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Robert Menendez on possible corruption charges related to his advocacy on behalf of the brothers.

Menendez has denied any quid pro quo with the Isaias brothers, whose family members donated $10,000 to Menendez’s 2012 campaign.

But Menendez wasn’t the only member of Congress that the Isaias clan called upon. Those same Isaias family members donated at least $23,700 to Ros-Lehtinen in the 2010, 2012, and 2014 cycles, according to federal campaign contribution records. The Isaias brothers live in Coral Gables, which falls inside Ros-Lehtinen’s district.

In March, 2011, Ros-Lehtinen wrote a letter to Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Arturo Valenzuela on behalf of the Isaias brothers, whom Ros-Lehtinen said “believe they are being politically and economically persecuted by the Government of Ecuador.”

Super-Bowl Champions Russell Wilson and The Seattle SeaHawks What Does Black Crow Taste Like boys?
By Desi Cortez Updated: February 4, 2014

Being a Black man, I have to ponder if my charges and claims of 1967 type Alabama racism being but an inch beneath the collective skin of million upon millions . . . upon millions of Euro-Americans, WASP . . . i.e. White people all across America still today are valid and legit. Internet sports media websites and sports talk radio seem to more-than confirm the hostility and anger bubbling beneath the surface.

Super Bowl 48 validated and confirmed what I’ve contended for most of my adult life . . . there’s little love for Black folks in this country. “Like” is even a term I’m reluctant to toss-around when it comes to “how” I believe most White folks honestly. truthfully, generally speaking feel about Black people. The term ‘respect” as in mutual respect is a concept I don’t believe most White folks, specifically Conservative (sexist/racist/ elitist) males refuse to entertain in relation to Blacks.

There’s virtually nothing we can do to , dig this . . . earn their respect.

Russell Wilson became the first QB to pass for at least 200 yards, 2 TDs and complete 70 percent of his passes, 3 runs for 26 yards, over 8 yards a carry on average . . . in a Super Bowl win without being named MVP. He had a 121 Qb rating . . . . Russell Wilson is the fourth quarterback to win a Super Bowl in his second NFL season, joining only Kurt Warner, Tom Brady and Ben Roethlisberger. Wilson, who has an NFL-record 28 wins in his first two pro seasons, and he threw no interceptions in the playoffs – nonetheless it’s as if he’s a sidebar/side note.

    more here: http://blackathlete.net/2014/02/super-bowl-champions-russell-wilson-seattle-sea-hawks-black-crow-taste-boys/

    • Lisa M

I think Steve Young said Russell should have gotten the MVP. I figured that because he didn’t top 300 passing yards he would not get it. I think the whole Defense should have won the MVP. Oh well, Russell will be back.

      Oh…and Good morning everyone!!

      • conlakappa

I thought the defense should have.

    • rikyrah

      not Desi…
      LOL

    • Town

They have told black people that for YEARS that we aren’t accepted in White Mainstream Society because we don’t go to school, we don’t get married & we have all these kids out of wedlock. If only we would do these things, we’d be accepted.

Barack & Michelle went to school but they must have cheated to get in school. They deprived Sarah Palin & Joe the Plumber of their rightful spots at Harvard & Princeton. Obama is really gay and he only married Michelle to gain influence in the black community. Michelle is just a baby mama even though she was married to her husband for YEARS before having their first child. She’s just as much as a baby mama as Sheniqua with 50-11 children and 16 baby daddies.

When folks see this, they realize there’s NOTHING they can do that will get them White acceptance, so they do their own thing and everyone else can deal. That’s why they were so pissed off at Michelle’s 50th birthday party…she did what she wanted, invited who she wanted & ran it how she wanted and not a single f*ck was given……..

      • rikyrah

The GOP can’t help their racism, because if they could, they would have gone the
” Of course, the President and His Wife are examples of the American Dream. Of course, they are positive role models not only for the Black Community but all America. We simply disagree with him on policy.”
Their unwillingness to do this made it quite plain and simple to every non-White in this country who isn’t a sellout and hasn’t been on Mars for the previous 43 White Presidents of this country.

        • Town

See, I can’t say “the GOP” because Hillary’s crew started up the racism against Obama. They started up the birther stuff, Bill was the one running around saying Obama should be serving them coffee etc. Inadequate black male and all of that.

          • BoomerGal

Yep! Dems and Repugs, both owned by the same people.

    • rikyrah

IMO: Zimmerman is a sociopath, DMX is an idiot, Trayvon’s counsel is passive.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Speaking of the fight, I read on Twitter that Hot 97 started a petition on the WH site to stop the fight. WTF? Why are they dragging PBO into this bs???

Like several people have tweeted, Black Twitter shut down that juror’s book deal without PBO’s help. Black Twitter is a powerful and effective tool, which is why they are studying us and trying to discredit us. Reign of April had a good idea: Contact the fight promoter instead of POTUS.

      • gn

smh @ a WH petition. What are they petitioning to get? President Obama said “Trayvon could have been my son” and rather than backtracking as his critics claimed he would he then said “Trayvon could have been ME.” Seriously what more needs to be said for people to understand that President Obama is on Trayvon’s side. He can’t stop a private event which is not breaking the law, but the condemnation towards DMX for participating may in fact do the trick. As would a statement from Trayvon’s counsel that the family is begging supporters to not dishonor this child’s memory by playing into Zimmerman’s foolishness. This is ridiculous.

        • Town

Are they still Trayvon’s counsel or have they just moved on to the next case? If they ain’t getting paid, they ain’t Trayvon’s counsel.

          • gn

IIRC they still have some involvement with the foundation. Regardless, someone needs to speak up, whether counsel or family spokesperson. There are a lot of silly people who think that they’re helping Trayvon’s family by hyping this Zimmerman fight. IMO there needs to be a statement helping to redirect that energy.

    • BoomerGal

      Why is DMX an idiot??

      • gn

For playing into Zimmerman’s hands by agreeing to a boxing match. No good can come of it and they derailed discussion of Trayvon’s birthday with it.

    • Adriane Farray

When OJ Simpson tried to publish his book both the Brown and Goldman families and their sympathizers in the media pushed back. The proceeds wound up going to the families who published the book after winning the rights themselves. My question is, where are the lawyers for Trayvon’s family? Why aren’t they on the networks, radio, local TV, social media, demanding and end of the GZ media circus? IMO they have let Sybrina ,Tracy and Trayvon down. This is a damn shame.

        ICAM.

        • Miranda

Black media has let Sybrina and Tracy down more than the attorneys. As pointed out…you couldn’t find a media outlet that wasn’t there to bash OJ and claim every dime of any proceeds – where are the black media journos to do the same now? They are the ones with microphones and the means to make sure Zimmerman is penniless and completely banished from any polite society. This is disgraceful.

Source: 4 arrested in connection with drugs in Hoffman’s apartment
CNN updated 9:31 AM EST, Wed February 5, 2014

New York (CNN) — Four people thought to be connected to the drugs found in Philip Seymour Hoffman’s apartment were arrested late Tuesday night, law enforcement officials told CNN.

During the raid that led to the arrest of the three men and one woman, police recovered 350 glassine-type bags of what is believed to be heroin, the officials said.

    No additional information was released.

When police were called to Hoffman’s fourth-floor Manhattan apartment Sunday, they found the actor lying on the bathroom floor with a syringe in his left arm. He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt, his eyeglasses still resting on his head, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the inquiry.

Port Authority eliminates ‘director’ job created for Wildstein
    By Steve Strunsky/The Star-Ledger
    February 05, 2014 at 7:05 AM

In all the vast history of the sprawling bureaucracy known as the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey there has never been a job like it.

It came with no actual job description.

In the end, it had only one occupant, and he didn’t even have to submit a résumé.

Nobody seemed to have the vaguest idea what he was really doing.

    But he was paid $15O,020.

The job of director of interstate capital projects, a special niche created for David Wildstein, the central figure in the George Washington Bridge scandal, has officially been abolished, the agency confirmed yesterday.

This means Wildstein will be forever known as the first and last DICP appointee.

    more here: http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2014/02/port_authority_eliminates_director_job_created_for_wildstein.html

    • trose1

Why did/ does the New York portion of the port authority allow the hiring of someone like Wildstein.
I am sorry but Gov Coumo needs to be called out. He seems to be part of these shenanigans. Something isn’t right.

      • goldenstar

Wildstein was hired on the NJ side. Each governor gets picks.

        • trose1

If the job was “created” for Wildstein was Cuomo allowed to create a position? It seems strange a position was created and Cuomo didn’t care? Is the money paid out of NY taxpayers money? Did Cuomo add a director? just sayin

          • goldenstar

Yes. Each governor has set appointed positions. Foye holds the NY position.

          • Miranda

I would assume the sharing of responsibility for each state is such that they can’t tell the other what to do in hiring for “their side”…its the same with a lot of shared bridges and waterways, etc. when they cross multiple states. I know when it comes to repairs, a state (or county or city for that matter) will repair its portion of a street/road, and when it crosses the border, that is IT…that’s where it ends.

The Death of Predatory Payday Lenders May Signal The Revival of the USPS
FEBRUARY 5, 2014 BY SKY OBERCAM

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren is aware of the high cost of poverty and proposes one interesting strategy to alleviate it: Replace predatory payday lending operations with the United States Postal Service. In a recent Huffington Post op-ed piece, Warren stated, “USPS could partner with banks to make a critical difference for millions of Americans who don’t have basic banking services because there are almost no banks or bank branches in their neighborhoods.”

The proposal is prompted by a report from the USPS’ Inspector General which explains how the agency’s intricate infrastructure could allow it to offer services such as small loans, check cashing, bill payment and debit cards to the very same communities big banks often overlook. It’s a massive community too. The report found that the 68 million Americans lacking a bank account spent a whopping 89 billion on interest and fees in 2012. In other words, predatory lenders literally suck the slight chance of prosperity away from those in most need. “The average un-banked household spent more than $2,400, or about 10 percent of its income, just to access its own money through things like check cashing and payday lending stores. USPS would generate savings for those families and revenue for itself by stepping in to replace those non-bank financial services companies,“ Think Progress reported.

I totally agree! This would serve an underserved population, could return an avenue of service that USPS used to command, and also be a pathway for USPS to gain grounding as a fundamental part of the government.

Tribe rarely hired first-year students but recalls being struck by Obama’s unusual combination of intelligence, curiosity and maturity. He was so impressed in fact, that he hired Obama on the spot—and wrote his name and phone number on his calendar that day—March 31, 1989—for posterity.

Obama helped research a complicated article Tribe wrote making connections between physics and constitutional law as well as a book about abortion.

Record Number Of Defendants Exonerated In 2013, Many For Crimes That Never Even Happened

[....] Twenty-seven of the 87 known exonerations were in cases in which no crime actually occurred, almost half for non-violent crimes, primarily drugs. Murder and even death penalty cases continue to be over-represented in these exonerations.[....] Overall, the most common causes of wrongful convictions were perjury or false accusation, official misconduct, or witness misidentification.[....]

Coerced guilty pleas remain common — 17 percent involved false confessions. And blacks continue to be over-represented in exonerations.[....] This year’s report revealed that the number of exonerations based on DNA evidence is dropping. The report attributes this to increased DNA testing before trial, even though many prominent cases involve instances when prosecutors refuse to test available evidence.

This report only accounts for known exonerations. As the national registry explains, there are many more unknown exonerations “and MANY more unknown false convictions.” In just the past two years, the registry discovered 280 exonerations that were previously unknown.

Ms. Marvel, aka Muslim teen Kamala Khan from Jersey City, set to make historic comic book series debut
BY ETHAN SACKS / NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
    TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2014, 7:44 PM

The new Ms. Marvel is set to make a Hulk-sized impact on the comic book industry.

Marvel Comics’ “Ms. Marvel #1” hits comic store shelves Wednesday, introducing readers to a new Muslim super heroine whose secret identity is 16-year-old Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American of Jersey City.

The character —- the brainchild of writer G. Willow Wilson, an Islamic convert herself, and Muslim editor Sana Amanat — is an attempt to punch through long-standing stereotypes in a medium that has largely been the purview of muscle-bound white crime-fighters.

“Kamala Khan is part of a long tradition that hearkens back to Peter Parker: A teenager struggling to find their own path who is suddenly granted great power, and learns the responsibility that comes with it,” Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso told The News via email.

Rice paddies providing respite for birds in drought-ravaged California

Water is in dangerously short supply in California, and most of the state’s wetlands have disappeared. So where are all those migratory birds traveling the congested Pacific Flyway supposed to stop for a rest and a feed? Here come rice farmers to the rescue.
Rice farms are sometimes criticized for using a lot of water.

But much of that water is released back into rivers and streams after the growing season. And it is the temporary layer of funky water that makes these fields, found the world over, potential habitat for wildlife. The Nature Conservancy is taking advantage of the wildlife-nurturing potential of rice paddies, partnering with growers to provide “pop-up” habitat for migratory birds.[....]

(Eleanor Holmes Norton needs to deal with problems in her own district. I don’t recall her press conference about this. Sounds like she doesn’t care very much.)

    Hard Times at Howard U.
    By CHARLAYNE HUNTER-GAULTFEB. 4, 2014
    New York Times

Although it is a private university, Howard has enjoyed special appropriations from the federal government — $200 million in the past decade. But as a result of congressionally mandated, across-the-board cuts — a.k.a., the sequester — Howard lost $12 million last year.

As Eleanor Holmes Norton, Washington’s congressional representative, put it: “Because of its historic reliance on government funds, that made Howard better off, but now, with the sequester, Howard, which was better off, is now worse off.”

She Gave Her House Key to a Homeless Teen, Dinner was Made When She got Home

[....] The 21-year-old New Zealander said she was in New York City doing a 6 month stint as a paramedic. “One of my call outs was a homeless mother and son. Wrong place, wrong time — she had been shot and would be in hospital for a while. The teen wasn’t allowed to stay at the hospital, which shocked me a little bit. So I put the boy into a taxi and gave him my front door key and paid the cabbie. That boy could’ve ransacked my home.

After a long night of dealing with some eye-popping incidences, I got home to find a meal wrapped up on my kitchen counter. It was scrambled eggs on toast with a ‘Thank you So Much’ note.” 13-yr old Nathanial and his mother Natalia stayed with me for the duration of my stay. Natalia got a job as an emergency response dispatcher and Nathanial is studying to become an mechanical engineer at the Navy.”[...]

      Simple ass muthafuckas.

    • itgurl_29

I’ve noticed that the only people defending Woody Allen in the media are older Jewish men. That Michael Wolff dude is going so far as to say Mia is putting this back out there so that Ronan can become a news media star. Every major article defending Woody is written by a Jewish man and every commentator who’s gotten on tv to defend him has been a Jewish man. It’s crazy. So yeah, I’m sure the Hollywood Jewish mafia (and it does exist, so I really don’t care who’s offended) gave the order to put the Bill Cosby sexual assault accusations out there again.

      • BoomerGal

You call it the Jewish mafia, I call it something else.

Can’t feel really sorry for Bill after he dragged black people through the mud.

I also wonder if they are putting out a hit on Bill Cosby because he plans to revive his show? Cosby’s shows showed black people in a positive and non-buffoonish light and I’m sure the powers that be can’t have that again.

        • itgurl_29

I don’t feel sorry for Bill either. I believe all those allegations. And I even believe the rumors about him actually firing Lisa Bonet because she rejected his advances, not because of the sex scenes in Angel Heart.

I love his shows and the positive images, but Bill Cosby’s got real issues. If he had any sense, he’d chill and fade into the background. Because they are coming for him. They are not gonna let Woody go down without taking out one of ours. Period.

Marshawn Lynch scores sweet endorsement deal with Skittles - Posted January 30, 2014

Besides being famous for his “Beastmode” running style, Seattle
Seahawks’ star Marshawn Lynch is well known for his love of the candy Skittles. Well now Lynch is reportedly teaming up with his favorite treat for a lucrative endorsement deal. The brand will be releasing a special “Seattle Mix” that will exclusively feature Seahawks’ blue and green colors.

This is the first time the classic candy has ever teamed up with a pro athlete. Lynch will be receiving an undisclosed sum of money for his participation in the Skittles promotion. Skittles has also agreed to pay $10,000 to Lynch’s charity foundation for every touchdown he scores on Super Bowl Sunday. Pretty sweet.

Army Finds Key to Improving Soldiers’ Mental Health, and It’s Exactly What You’d Expect

[....] Soldiers reported “significantly” fewer psychological problems and suicidal thoughts than in studies from 2010 through 2012, some of the war’s bloodiest years. Soldiers reporting psychological problems such as PTSD, depression and anxiety dropped from 17.3 percent in 2010 to 10 percent in 2013. Also, fewer soldiers reported having suicidal thoughts, from 13 percent in 2010 to 8.5 percent last year.[....]

As expected, the mental health improvement coincided with fewer “combat experiences” among troops, defined as IED explosions, shooting at or killing a combatant or having a unit member die. Less than half of surveyed soldiers reported firing their weapons in 2013, down from 70.1 percent in 2010. One in five soldiers reported killing a combatant, compared with 37.7 percent in 2010.[....]

Lawsky Said to Open Currency Probe of Over Dozen Banks

Benjamin Lawsky, New York’s top financial regulator, has asked more than a dozen banks including Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Deutsche Bank AG for documents related to their currency trading practices[....] Lawsky also requested information from Lloyds Banking Group Plc, Royal Bank of Scotland Plc, Credit Suisse Group AG and Standard Chartered Plc. Lawsky has asked for traders’ e-mails and instant messages to review whether they manipulated currency rates, the person said.[....] While Lawsky isn’t authorized to bring criminal charges, he can make referrals to prosecutors[....]

In August 2012, Lawsky garnered attention when he made public statements about possibly revoking Standard Chartered’s banking license over the bank’s violations of U.S. sanctions involving dollar transfers to Iranian clients. Standard Chartered’s stock dropped 16 percent the day of Lawsky’s comments. A week later, the bank agreed to pay $340 million to resolve the matter. Other regulators followed, and the bank agreed to pay an additional $327 million for the conduct in December 2012.

      • goldenstar

And, she’s a journalist at the Cook Report.

    • jds09

Seriously out of touch. This is what happens when you have trust fund journalists. Prolly got her job cause she could afford several unpaid internships. ACA gives a lot of folks the ability to say “kiss my ass” to crappy jobs. If you had that sensitivity you would know that’s a big deal, not simple “out of context.”

The emos are engaged in an all-out insurrection! [YAWN] The most interesting development will be when we find out who is funding their so-called “new venture” and whether hold music is involved? [insert eye-roll]

Ezra Klein announced last month that he’s leaving the Washington
Post, and he’s apparently taking more of his colleagues with him.
The Huffington Post’s Michael Calderone reported Wednesday that Brad Plumer and Sarah Kliff, both of whom worked with Klein on the Post’s Wonkblog, will be joining Klein’s new venture at Vox
    Media.

Klein already confirmed that fellow WaPo colleagues Melissa Bell and Dylan Matthews were leaving the newspaper with him. Slate’s Matt Yglesias, a personal friend of Klein, will also be a part of the new venture.

B.Y.O. bulbs and doorknobs: Sochi stay starts off as disaster for journalists

[....] Billions of dollars have been poured into the Olympic Village and infrastructure in Sochi prior to the Winter Games, but journalists are finding just plain awful conditions in hotels as they arrive. Here are some of their more hilarious tweets:

*My hotel has no water. If restored, the front desk says, “do not use on your face because it contains something very dangerous.”

*Late to the party but this light fixture crashed a foot from my bed on second night in #Sochi media hotel.

*Several hotels along 4 block radius without water in #Sochi due to water main break.

*Fellow journo: Colleague lost hotel room key. Hotel did not have copy. So instead of giving a new key, they removed the whole door.

*The reception of our hotel in #Sochi has no floor. But it does have this welcoming picture. pic.twitter.com/8isdoBuytl
