Wednesday Open Thread: Top Black Restaurateurs

For more than 30 years, chef Marvin Woods has enjoyed a culinary journey that has taken him around the world, on TV and into bookstores as a published author.  He is a mentor as well as a trailblazer in the country’s fight against obesity, especially among children. Some may say he is one of our unsung celebrity chefs, but indeed to those who know him and have followed his work and career over the years, know that he has earned his stripes and place in shaping America’s culinary revolution.

“My dad took me into the kitchen when I was seven and we made scrambled eggs and I thought that was fun and exciting. By the time I was 12 or 13, I was getting the Betty Crocker recipe cards sent to the house every two weeks.  I still have those cards,” shares Woods as he recalls the moment that started it all.  Born and raised in New Jersey, that morning would create a spark that would continue to grow as Woods got older.

Eventually scrambled eggs turned to pizzas and other delectables made from scratch (including cheesecakes) as he took over the cooking duties on the weekends, including Sunday dinners. “My mom had a career and I have three sisters.  Anything instant, anything that can help her get in the kitchen, out the kitchen quicker, she signed up for,” says Woods. This simply opened the door for him to hone his skills which would take him to culinary school following high school graduation. “One reason why culinary art really resonates with me is because of the art piece. I am an artist. I am a creative being.”

Following culinary school, Woods went full throttle in New York working for some of the top restaurants in the state including The Sea Grill at Rockefeller Center, Helmsley Palace (now the New York Palace) and the former Windows of the World.

Growing up he was encouraged by this dad to join the military as a ticket to see the world, but Woods would use the universal language of food to make his way over to Europe where he would live for four years, first in Ireland and then in the U.K. “One of the things my dad always told me is that when you get old enough, you need to leave this country and go experience life,” says Woods.  While working in Dublin and eventually London, he also traveled throughout Europe and earned his first executive chef title at the age of 29 before returning to the states.

Of course every journey is not without challenges and adversities which is what Woods would later experience as his career started to take off even more at Café Beulah back in New York. His contribution to the restaurant’s winning low-country menu not only put the restaurant on the map, but Woods as well. Soon the Food Network (then in its infancy years) would come calling and feature him four times on “Ready, Set, Cook,” and also on “Chef du Jour.”  A chance meeting led to his first cookbook, “The New Low-Country Cooking,” but also caused him to sever ties with the restaurant.

Moving on to the next chapter of his life, he took an offer and landed in Miami where he would work in some of the city’s top establishments and even open one of his own that was named M. Woods which closed after three years.

TV opportunities came back around again and this time Woods had his own show, “Home Plate,” out of Atlanta on Ted Turner’s network, Turner South.  Watched in 7 million households a week for four seasons, the show focused on taking Southern recipes and preparing them differently, often healthier.

Woods is part owner and executive chef of FunXion, which offers popular American dishes with a “healthy twist,” including bison burgers, buffalo-chicken pizza and smoked-chicken wraps. Woods has led the kitchens at Milestone Hotel in London, Savannah Restaurant and the National Hotel, Hollywood Prime at the Westin Diplomat and M. Woods in Miami.  Woods was the first chef to help kick off Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign. He also has Oprah’s stamp of approval.”

For Woods, it is all about passion, experience and most importantly timing.  When it does opens, it will be right for sure this time.

I really hope that the loss by the Clinton in-law inspires new confidence among would-be 2016 contenders that the Clinton’s influence is limited to the media, PUMA dead-enders and sycophants. The Clinton’s can be beaten and soundly at that.

    • Sure hope that doesn’t apply in Kentucky because I want Mitch gone and Clinton is trying to help with that. Last night wasn’t about the Clintons. Last night was about putting the GOP on notice that we’re going to tear them apart in November.

      • goldenstar

      • TresL

I did say “would-be 2016 contenders” and if the other two candidates the Clinton’s backed had won, you can bet that last night would have been all about the Clintons.

        • Media wise probably just so they could needle the President but that’s their hangup. The real deal news is we’re coming for the Republicans and they know it. The buildup to November is going to be incredible. McConnell applying for unemployment? I’m there.

    Josh Marshall – May 20, 2014, 11:35 PM EDT

I’m not sure why this isn’t a bigger deal. I hadn’t heard about it other than in this brief passage tucked away in a Politico article about the House GOP agriculture bill. But it takes a small program intended provide meals to children in the school lunch program during the summer months and says it can now only be used to benefit kids in “rural areas”.

In other words, “urban” kids are now out of luck.

Here’s the passage in question ..

And in a surprising twist, the bill language specifies that only rural areas are to benefit in the future from funding requested by the administration this year to continue a modest summer demonstration program to help children from low-income households — both urban and rural — during those months when school meals are not available.

Since 2010, the program has operated from an initial appropriation of $85 million, and the goal has been to test alternative approaches to distribute aid when schools are not in session. The White House asked for an additional $30 million to continue the effort, but the House bill provides $27 million for what’s described as an entirely new pilot program focused on rural areas only.

Democrats were surprised to see urban children were excluded. And the GOP had some trouble explaining the history itself. But a spokeswoman confirmed that the intent of the bill is a pilot project in “rural areas” only.

There seems to be a degree of understatement going on here, particularly in the final paragraph. What gives?

    • jds09

I just can’t. In a “surprising twist’? Really? So-called journalists that are too scared or to lazy to research American political history, should have their press passes pulled.

This is not surprising, this is a old-school, established white American tactic that protects their advantage (aka privilege) and is based in their white supremacist thinking (rural white kids are deserve food, urban black/brown kids deserve nothing).

Hey journalist please google social security and how it excluded “agricultural workers”, the Chinese Exclusion Act, etc..

This playing dumb is getting on my last nerve.

    • We all know rural is code for white, and urban us code for Black and Latino. So, Republicans are saying they’re gonna feed white children and let Black and Latino children starve.

The CBC, NAACP, National Urban League, Tavis, Cornell, etc. should be raising hell about this! And Black media outlets like RoRo, George Curry, April Ryan should be covering this story!

      • rikyrah

oh, I know the code, Sepia.
        we all know the dogwhistles.

      • jziglar

Well they won’t because they’re afraid, but when it comes to Obama they have no problem stepping up and disrespecting him.

So, then, from somewhere inside, I started to sing to her the Schoolhouse Rock about Nouns, and she just looked at me with this face…

And if you caught any parts of either candidates’ victory speeches last night, these numbers explain why they both came out swinging HARD. Ooo, gonna be a slug fest.

      • Alison has entered the steel cage and is taunting McConnell. I like that. Still think she is going to have to figure out a way to embrace the popularity of Obamacare in her state but she’s going to give old Mitch a fight he won’t forget. .

Let’s see how she positions herself in relationship to BO.

          • McConnell is going to hang PBO around her neck and she has to be ready. Pretending you never heard of the guy imo is a recipe for disaster. But she can’t fully embrace him either so she’s going have to walk a tightrope. .

There’s no GOP establishment/Tea Party divide, and there never has been

    BY Paul Waldman

The reality, however, is that there was never any significant ideological divide between the Republican establishment and the Tea Party. The establishment just understands better than it did in 2010 or 2012 the dangers the Tea Party presents and how to handle them.
The rallying cry of establishment Republicans since 2012 has been “No more Akins,” referring to Todd Akin, the Missouri congressman who lost a Senate race in 2012 after his infamous “legitimate rape” comment. The problem with Akin and other recent failed candidates like Richard Mourdock and Sharron Angle wasn’t that they had extreme positions on issues that the Republican establishment disagreed with. It was that they were idiots — poor campaigners who inevitably said stupid things that generated media frenzies.

    These mean ass dawgs.

For further clarification on the GOP actually trying to pass a bill to NOT FEED black kids….this is the language they put in the Agriculture Appropriations bill – its on page 44

Provided further, That of the total amount available, $27,000,000 shall remain available until expended to carry out section 749(g) of the Agriculture Appropriations Act of 2010 (Public Law 111–80) in rural counties designated in 40 U.S.C. 14102.

This is section 749(g) of the AG Appropriations Act of 2010:
(g)(1) <> From the funds made available under paragraph (5), the Secretary shall carry out demonstration projects to develop and test methods of providing access to food for children in urban and rural areas during the summer months when schools are not in regular session to–
    (A) reduce or eliminate the food insecurity and hunger of
    children; and
    (B) improve the nutritional status of children.

And then these mofos added the caveat of the funds only being available for rural counties designated in 40 U.S.C. 14102 – which are the counties listed here under Uses and Restrictions”

    • Kennymack1971

If you want to win the presidency or the majority of seats in the senate then you can’t alienate such a large block of people. The GOP is setting themselves up for a world of hurt in the not so distant future.

    • Aquagranny911

The GOP are fools! My DIL pointed out last night that her four kiddos go to an ethnically mixed school where a majority of the students are on reduced price or free lunch. There are just as many Anglo children on the free lunch program, maybe more than Latino & Native children.

She went on to say: “Since they want to only feed the rural children, does this mean all ones on the Rez & those children of migrant workers in our fields? Will the kids have to show ID to prove they are all “Americans?”

      She is pissed about this!

    Plot thickens.

N.B.A. Is Said to Allege Duplicity By Sterling

As Commissioner Adam Silver vowed to push forward with terminating Donald Sterling’s ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers, the N.B.A.’s case against Sterling came into sharper focus Tuesday.

According to the N.B.A.’s 30-page formal allegation against Sterling, a copy of which was obtained by The Los Angeles Times, the Sterling-led Clippers tried to destroy evidence relating to the league’s investigation of racist comments he had made on a recording.

The league also alleges that Sterling and his associates provided “false and misleading information” to David Anders, the league’s chief investigator, and that there is ample evidence that Sterling and his wife, Rochelle, are not estranged, as Rochelle Sterling has suggested.

Donald Sterling, who has owned the Clippers since 1981, was given the charges this week and has until May 27 to respond. A special hearing is scheduled for June 3, and if three-fourths of the league’s owners vote to sustain the charges, Sterling will be forced to sell the Clippers.

Last month, Silver barred Sterling from the league for life and fined him $2.5 million. Sterling has yet to pay the fine, and he told the league through his lawyer that he had done nothing wrong.

On Tuesday, Silver said he was open to Sterling’s selling the team on his own before going through the league’s termination process.

“We know we’re doing the right thing, and I know I have the owners behind me,” Silver said.

According to the league’s charges, Sterling went to his companion V. Stiviano, the woman on the recording, and asked her to tell the league that the voice on the recording was not his and that she had altered it.

The league also alleges that Andy Roeser, the team’s former president, received a copy of the recording from another team employee some three weeks before it was released by the website TMZ. Roeser, according to the league, told the unnamed employee to delete it from a phone.

Rochelle Sterling, who co-owns the Clippers with her husband through a family trust, said in an interview last week that she and her husband had been living in separate residences for more than a year and that she was planning to file for divorce. She also said that she would pursue litigation if the league sought to strip her of her share of the team’s ownership.

Her lawyer, Pierce O’Donnell, denied that she had played any role in a cover-up.

“Shelly continues to be unfairly tarnished by the words and actions of her co-owner and estranged husband,” O’Donnell said in a statement, adding, “While they remain business partners, Shelly has denounced his racist statements in the strongest terms.”

Read this comment from a stupid emo liberal on Balloon Juice in response to the story on the GOP excluding urban kids from the program:

    mike with a mic
“rural areas are where rich urban bankers shut down things to ship jobs to China. Urban areas could tax that stolen cash but don’t.

You can’t be against the predatory rich and also be pro urban areas. And you can’t be pro city and not be pro plutocrat. You may think so in your head, but you are on the 1%s side the moment you side with urban America.”

There is a reason why I say that the far left is just the opposite side of the same coin. There isn’t much difference between the far left and far right. If it wasn’t for the cities this country would be a backwards third world country.

No, the Spitting Attack on a Paralyzed Mom Was Not a Hoax

Dana Loesch reacts to MoJo’s exposé on gun bullies by attacking an assault victim.
By Mark Follman Wed May 21, 2014 11:53 AM EDT

Last week, Mother Jones published an in-depth report exposing vicious, degrading tactics used by gun-rights activists against women, from Arizona to Texas to Indiana. In response, right-wing pundit Dana Loesch and others have claimed that an assault on Jennifer Longdon—a mom, gun owner, and gun violence survivor paralyzed by a bullet—is a hoax. Their attack on Longdon (and Mother Jones) is as stupefyingly inane and illogical as it is wrong.

As I reported in detail last week, a man who recognized Longdon as a gun-reform advocate from a television broadcast approached her in the Indianapolis airport on April 25 and spat in her face. Loesch says that because no video evidence of the attack was presented with the story, it simply could not have happened. “I was in the same airport on April 25th and it was quite busy,” she wrote. “Should be easy to obtain security footage.” Beyond Loesch’s faith in the 24/7 surveillance state as the new standard of fact-finding—nothing is true unless you roll tape!—her comrades say that further proof of a conspiracy rests with CNN supposedly monopolizing all TVs in the Indy airport and having “no record” of the Longdon footage. Got it.

Kanye West ‘Spoke A Truth’ About Hurricane Katrina, Says Mike Myers
    Posted: 05/21/2014 8:12 am EDT

Speaking to GQ for the magazine’s June issue, Mike Myers commented on Kanye West’s infamous critique of George W. Bush during a 2005 telethon to support the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
“I actually wasn’t familiar with his work,” Myers, who was paired with West for the telethon, told GQ. “Then [Kanye] said he was going to take some liberties with the thing.”

    — –Obama vows to hold officials accountable in VA scandal

    — – –President Obama vowed he would punish any misconduct at the Department of Veterans Affairs amid allegations that dozens of veterans died because of mismanagement at medical facilities across the country.

“If these allegations prove to be true, it is dishonorable, it is disgraceful, and I will not tolerate it,” Obama said during a press
conference Wednesday morning. The president met earlier in the day with Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki and Rob Nabors, a White House deputy chief of staff tasked with leading an internal investigation into the issue.

The president said he expects to receive initial results of that
investigation next week and have the full review in hand sometime next month.
“We have to let the investigators do their job, and get to the bottom of what happened. Our veterans deserve to know the facts,” Obama

“Anyone found to have manipulated or falsified records at VA facilities has to be held accountable,” he added.

15-year-old Boko Haram victim meets with House Foreign Relations Committee

What she didn’t say with her soft voice Deborah Peters made loud and clear with the small poster she held up before a phalanx of cameras that read ‘#Bring Back My Sisters.’

Peters is a survivor, a 15-year-old from Chibok, Nigeria, the same town where nearly 300 schoolgirls were abducted by the terrorist group Boko Haram. She came to Capitol Hill Wednesday to tell members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee of her harrowing 2011 experience with Boko Haram, an encounter that left her father and brother dead. She also had a message for Washington’s lawmakers.

‘I want the government to know how much Nigeria is in our prayers and I want them to like maybe send armies to find the girls or maybe they should help the people who lost their families,’ she said.

A Desperate Darrell Issa Subpoenas The Entire Department of Justice
    – — –Republican witch hunter Darrell Issa is getting desperate, so desperate that he has subpoenaed the Department of Justice
in an attempt to revive the IRS scandal.

In a letter that accompanied the subpoena, Rep. Issa wrote,
“The Department’s refusal to allow Mr. Pilger to testify about matters
highly relevant to the Committee’s investigation unnecessarily delays
and frustrates the Committee’s Constitutional oversight obligations.
The Department’s obstruction in this regard, coupled with its failure to
produce any relevant material to date, leads the Committee to conclude the Department is not seriously committed to cooperating with the Committee’s investigation on the Committee’s terms.”

Issa is now claiming that the DOJ is part of some massive cover-up of the IRS scandal. Rep. Issa has long claimed that President Obama and the White House were behind the “targeting of conservative groups.” By subpoenaing the DOJ, Issa is trying to advance his conspiracy theory.
    — –SNIP– –

    – – -After the attempts to revive Benghazi have gone nowhere, it looks like Rep. Issa is trying to dig up the IRS scandal again. House Republicans keep going over the same worn out ground over and over again. There is no scandal here. Time is running out, and Darrell Issa is getting desperate for something to use against President Obama.-THERE IS MORE

    — –Boko Haram militants attack again, kill 48 people– – –
    — – –Boko Haram militants attacked three villages in Nigeria, killing 48 people, residents said Wednesday, as rescue workers in the central city of Jos dug into the rubble of destroyed buildings, searching for the missing a day after two bombs loaded in vehicles killed more than 100.

One of the attacks lies near the town of Chibok, where more than 300
schoolgirls were kidnapped last month. b>The armed Islamic extremists attacked the three villages between Tuesday night and early Wednesday, according to residents and a state intelligence agent who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to give information to reporters.

Apagu Maidaga of Alagarno said residents of that village hid in the bush and watched while the extremists set ablaze their homes of
    thatch-roofed mud huts.

“We saw our village up in flames as we hid in the bush waiting for
    the dawn; we lost everything,”
he told The Associated Press in a
    telephone call.
