Wednesday Open Thread: Unsung Heroes of the Civil Rights Movement

Myles Falls Horton (July 9, 1905 – January 19, 1990) was an American educator, socialist and co-founder of the Highlander Folk School, famous for its role in the Civil Rights Movement (Movement leader James Bevel called Horton “The Father of the Civil Rights Movement”). Horton taught and heavily influenced most of the era’s leaders. They included Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks (who studied with Horton shortly before her decision to keep her seat on the Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955), John Lewis, James Bevel, Bernard Lafayette, Ralph Abernathy, John B. Thompson, and many others.

A poor white man from Savannah in West Tennessee, Horton’s social and political views were strongly influenced by theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, under whom he studied at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Along with educator Don West and Methodist minister James A. Dombrowski ofNew Orleans, Horton founded the Highlander Folk School (now Highlander Research and Education Center) in his native Tennessee in 1932. He remained its director until 1973, traveling with it to reorganize in Knoxville after the state shut it down in 1961.

Horton and West had both traveled to Denmark to study its folk schools, centers for adult education and community empowerment. The resulting school in Monteagle, Tennessee was based on a concept originating in Denmark: “that an oppressed people collectively hold strategies for liberation that are lost to its individuals . . . The Highlander School had been a haven for the South’s handful of functional radicals during the thirties and the essential alma mater for the leaders of the CIO’s fledgling southern organizing drives.” The school was created to educate and empower adults for social change.

In their 1985 documentary You Got to Move, Lucy Massie Phenix and Veronica Selver prominently featured Horton and the Highlander School. Horton also inspired the founding of the Myles Horton Organization at the University of Tennessee in 1986. The group organized numerous protests and events in the Chattanooga, Tennessee area, including demonstrations to counter the Ku Klux Klan, and the construction of a shantytown on campus to encourage the university to divest from South Africa.

Myles Horton was born in 1905 in Savannah, Tennessee to a poor family. His parents were former school teachers and Presbyterians. His father was a Workers’ Alliance member and his mother served as a respected and socially active community member. During his teenage years, Horton experienced union organization by holding jobs at a sawmill and as a packer at factories. As a teenager, he demonstrated his activism by holding a strike for higher wages at the tomato factory. Horton attended Cumberland College in Tennessee in 1924 and continued his work with local unions. After college, Horton went to work as a state Student YMCA secretary. In 1929, Horton became familiar with social gospel philosophy while studying in New York at the Union Theological Seminary. He wanted to find a way in which the social condition could be challenged and changed and education became his nonviolent instrument. At the University of Chicago, Horton learned about the Danish folk high schools. Inspired after his visit to these schools, Horton helped established his own education center, Highlander Folk School, in Monteagle, Tennessee in 1932.  He later married Zilphia Mae Johnson in 1935. Zilphia Horton was a constant collaborator with Horton until her death in 1956. Zilphia and Myles Horton had two children. In 1962, Myles Horton married Aimee Isgrig. In January 1990, Myles Horton died at the age of 84.

      • conlakappa

Hey, NYC could actually have a mayor who has a happy and present spouse [and might leave office with that same spouse!]–this after Rudy G. and his messiness and Mayor Mike trying to give off a player vibe. For anyone who even tries to form his/her lips to saying Dante would sully Gracie Mansion by bringing hip-hop up in there, think back to Donna getting an injunction to stay in the official residence and Rudy needing to go live with friends!

        • JojoRaze

I hope they stay in the Park Slope House. Gracie Mansion is a museum that’s falling apart and Dante goes to Brooklyn Tech, so it may be easier for them to stay in Brooklyn and have Bill commuteo city Hall like a normal person.

That’s what I meant: his and her putative dignity. To go through that humiliation and being a national joke yet not even able to garner 5%.

  • goldenstar

This is a real problem. All those folks whining about how PBO doesn’t do enough need to get off their butts and actually organize voters. There are battles out there and a big one was lost last night.

Colorado Lawmakers Ousted in Recall Vote Over Gun Law

COLORADO SPRINGS — Two Colorado Democrats who provided crucial support for a slate of tough new gun-control laws were voted out of office on Tuesday in a recall vote widely seen as a test of popular support for gun restrictions after mass shootings in a Colorado movie theater and a Connecticut elementary school.

The election, which came five months after the United States Senate defeated several gun restrictions, handed another loss to gun-control supporters. It also gave moderate lawmakers across the country a warning about the political risks of voting for tougher gun laws.

The recall elections ousted two Democratic state senators, John Morse and Angela Giron, and replaced them with Republicans. Both defeats were painful for Democrats – Mr. Morse’s because he had been Senate president, and Ms. Giron’s because she represented a heavily Democratic, working-class slice of southern Colorado.

In an emotional concession speech, Mr. Morse called the loss of his seat “purely symbolic” and defended the record of the last legislative session as “phenomenal.”

    • conlakappa

Morse was right in what he said to interviewers last night: to be defeated after this very important bill was passed is not such a bad thing. That’s seeing the fight as being bigger than the individual.

Meanwhile, not a lot about Bloomberg’s loss of political capital and actual capital–he was throwing the most money at this but clearly not in the correct way.

    • rigoletta

Good for Morse and Giron for doing what is right even though it cost them.

    • jziglar

The republicans in Colorado should not act like this victory means they have a chance in Colorado after a decade of defeats. Giron’s district has more Democrats than Republicans so after 2014 that seat may very well swing back to the Democrats as well as Morse’s seat. (Turnout was pretty low)

The democrats have a large majority in the Assembly and I don’t see Tom Tancredo beating John Hickenlooper.

Get ready for Black folks in NYC to catch a ton of blame from Miss Ann.

      • The Miss Ann Brigade stay losing.

        • itgurl_29

And the biggest Miss Ann of all will lose in 2016. People are not checking for these women who are puppets of these “moderate” men like Bloomberg and Slick Willy. If Hillary wants to win, she better transform herself into Elizabeth Warren. But it won’t happen. Miss Ann is gonna be Miss Ann.

          • People are not checking for these women who are puppets of these “moderate” men like Bloomberg and Slick Willy.

THIS. All their talk about “independent women” and these two are riding on the coattails of men.

          • itgurl_29

Quinn was just gonna be another term for Bloomberg and Hillary would just be another term for Bill. I would like to see a woman President, but she needs to be her own woman. I don’t want her to be the wife of some former President. That’s not cool for a “first”. You gotta stand on your own like Barack Obama stands on his own.

      • conlakappa

True, black folks don’t even show up in the purple color bar that was assigned to her in the link that GLH provided! Did she even try to court them or figure the two Bills would knock each other out and she’d get it in a walk?

        • rikyrah

no, she didn’t reach out the Black community at all

          • conlakappa

Because she took it as fact that we’re homophobic or because she was ceding the votes to Bill and Bill? There’s willful ignorance and there’s tactical arrogance. I’m curious as to the camp she falls in.

    • MsKitty

Bet if she had to do over again she wouldn’t have willingly become Bloomberg’s Mini-me. Sucks to be her.

    • JojoRaze

I told y’all no one, even the Becky’s, were not checking for her. The LGBT community knee-capped her for supporting, or facilitating the closure of St Vincent Hospital, which was ground zero for the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and the only hospital in that rapidly growing downtown neighborhood. She ticked off the food vendors bby supporting a$1000 fine on them for blocking the sidewalks the vendors can be a pain, but that was excessive-the fine was lowered to $500 but it still ticked the vendys off. Women didn’t like her because as chirlane said, she wasn’t talking about it. She had no constituency other than the rich gays who wanted to have a gay mayor.
      She basically forgot she’s a Democrat not a Christine-crat.

      • gn

Also, I think for a lot of people it was about the term limit alliance with Bloomberg and then her trying to split the baby on Stop and Frisk (although City Council overrode Bloomberg’s veto). That, and the GOP nominee’s electability issues means that people could go farther left in the Democratic primary than Quinn (I don’t think she’s awful at all though, just wasn’t a personal top choice). I hope that de Blasio keeps his promises; the mayor’s race is his to lose.

Turning the exceptionalism debate on its ear
    By Steve Benen
    Wed Sep 11, 2013 8:00 AM EDT

For much of President Obama’s first term, when conservatives weren’t questioning President Obama’s citizenship, patriotism, or affinity for capitalism, they complained loudly and frequently about the president’s commitment to “American exceptionalism.”

After last night, the criticisms look pretty silly. Obama has not only embraced the principle, he’s now begun using it as a key part of his rationale in confronting Syria.

The right’s rhetoric on this has never really made any sense, but it was a Republican staple for years. Throughout the 2012 campaign, in nearly every stump speech he delivered, Mitt Romney insisted that Obama thinks “America’s just another nation with a flag.”

I wonder if conservatives noticed the not-so-subtle theme in the president’s remarks to the nation on Syria.

“My fellow Americans, for nearly seven decades, the United States has been the anchor of global security. This has meant doing more than forging international agreements — it has meant enforcing them. The burdens of leadership are often heavy, but the world is a better place because we have borne them. […]

“America is not the world’s policeman. Terrible things happen across the globe, and it is beyond our means to right every wrong. But when, with modest effort and risk, we can stop children from being gassed to death, and thereby make our own children safer over the long run, I believe we should act. That’s what makes America different. That’s what makes us exceptional. With humility, but with resolve, let us never lose sight of that essential truth.”

For black infants, a precarious start in life

Black babies are more than twice as likely as white ones to die before their first birthday. The healthcare overhaul might help.

The cramping came on quickly. Then the bleeding.
Samantha Bradley was only six months pregnant. She had already miscarried once. She knew she needed to get to an emergency room.

“I was in tears,” she said. “The only thing I could think was ‘Get me to a hospital.'”

On vacation in Palm Springs, Bradley and her sister rushed to a nearby hospital. About 30 minutes later, Bradley gave birth to her son.

The baby weighed just 1 pound, 8 ounces — a little more than a bag of coffee.

She got only a quick glance before doctors whisked him away. She saw his rib cage protruding from his tiny frame. He didn’t make a sound.

Black women like Bradley are 1 1/2 times as likely as white women to give birth prematurely, and their babies are more than twice as likely to die before their first birthday.

RUMOR: Obama May Give Presidential Pardon To Sandi Jackson Before Leaving Office
    Sep 11, 2013

It looks like ex-Chicago Ald. Sandi Jackson, wife of disgraced Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., could be getting a huge favor from the President.

“The hottest rumor to come down the political pike: Speculation
President Barack Obama may pardon former Ald. Sandi Jackson before he leaves office in January 2017,” Sun-Times political reporter Michael
    Sneed said Monday.

    MORE: http://blackamericaweb.com/164867/rumor-obama-may-give-presidential-pardon-to-sandi-jackson-before-leaving-office/

I won’t believe it until I see it. Why should she deserve any mercy thrown her way? Feels like people trying to force the President’s hand again.

      • goldenstar

I’m with you. I can’t see BO giving her a pardon. Am curious what sag and rikyrah think.

      • ITA. Sounds like someone planted this rumor. Could it be Messy Jesse?

        • conlakappa

That was my first guess. There are no defensible grounds for Sandi to be let off the hook. She saw the money flow in, turning a blind eye to her husband cheating. I’m with the judge that she should have thought about her children before putting them in this situation.

          • JojoRaze

No way would PBO do something this outright stupid. He’d be immediately accused of nepotism or trafficking of influence since Sandi and FLOTUS were friends back in the day. The Jackson’s have definitely started this rumor to see f there’s support for a Jesse Jr pardon.

Why would Obama give Sandi Jackson a pardon?

“The hottest rumor to come down the political pike.”

Yeah, the one you made up. #stop

    • sagittarius

      Hi, Fam!

My take: this is a planted rumor by Messy Jesse. I wouldn’t trust Michael Sneed to hand me an umbrella if it were raining cats and dogs. Let’s examine the facts, shall we?

JJJ and Sandi are BOTH lawyers… I believe they met at the University of IL law school. BOTH of them were aware of the campaign finance laws. BOTH of them thought they were nickel slick and would not be prosecuted because of who they were.

Given how closely POTUS guards his reputation and is not into drama or mess, I cannot see him granting a pardon to Sandi because there are no grounds to do so.

Sandi is trying to play the wronged little woman… OOPS – too late and won’t work. Like I said, she is also an attorney.

@Jojo Raze… FLOTUS is/was friends with Santita, JJJ’s sister, not Sandi.

      • itgurl_29

Yup, this has the stench of Messy Jesse all over it.

      • rikyrah

I appreciate your explanation, but, for me, the fact that it came FROM SNEED, made me give it 1000 side-eyes.

And this comment here from js hopper:

      Funny thing is…

When most reasonable people hear the issues explained DIRECTLY from President Obama they tend to agree with his approach/ rationale. They respect the fact that he gives a thoughtful honest viewpoint.

That’s what scares the shit out of the Republicans, Firebaggers, Paultards and the Corporate Media. It pisses them off and drives them CRAZY.

That’s why ALL OF THEM typically refuse to allow Obama direct access to their audience. They ALWAYS prefer to tell their followers what he said…and how to react and feel about what they want you to believe he said. They will slice up his statements and attempt to manipulate their viewers and give them a false impression.

Just go to any Firebagger blog and you will find them still trying to convince people Obama is worse than Bush because he said ” fill in the blank snippet” from his speech last night. Take one sentence out of context and use it to FAP FAP FAP in self righteous ratfucking outrage.

Florida Police Chief: Either George Zimmerman Or His Lawyer Is Not Telling The Truth

The Florida police chief that is actively investigating a confrontation between George Zimmerman, his wife and his father in law says someone is lying: either George Zimmerman or his lawyer.

Both the Lake Mary Florida Police Chief, Steve Bracknell, and the department’s spokesman Zach Hudson confirmed to ThinkProgress that George Zimmerman told officers at the scene that he did not have a gun on him during the incident. This directly contradicts what ZImmerman’s lawyer, Mark O’Mara, told CNN:

This is what I think went down:

Zimmerman went to confront Shellie at her dad’s house.

Shellie started recording the situation on her iPad.

Zimmerman got mad about being recorded on the iPad and destroyed it.

Dad came on the scene, saw the destroyed iPad and an upset daughter and laid hands on Zimmerman.

Zimmerman punched Dad in the nose and started patting his hip and telling them to “come closer.”

Shellie knows Zimmerman packs heat under his clothes, got scared & called the police.

The police see an upset Shellie & destroyed iPad on the floor and handcuff Zimmerman.

Zimmerman tells the police Shellie’s lying, he doesn’t have a gun.

Mark O’Mara gets on the scene, goes into lawyer mode, asks Shellie & her Dad if they actually SAW Zimmerman with a gun. They say no. He promises to break them off a little something.

Mark O’Mara gets on TV and says Yeah, Georgie had a gun but he never displayed it.

Later, O’Mara tells Zimmerman while he’s working for him pro bono on the Trayvon case, he needs his retainer for all these charges he’s been catching lately. Also, stay away from Shellie & her dad. Zimmerman tells him he ain’t paying him shit & he gonna do whatever he feels like doing and if he feels like paying Shellie a visit to “chat” that’s what he’s gonna do.

So O’Mara is like, “Ya know what, that’s enough. You gotta go. I’ll represent you as far as the Trayvon case but everything else you’re on your own.”

But, it really doesn’t matter what Shellie, George or O’Mara say about the gun. Did the police search George Zimmerman for a gun or not? Because if they DIDN’T search him for a gun on a domestic violence 911 call & just took his word for it…….how many other victims of domestic violence have that police force brushed off? And this WASN’T the Sanford Police Dep’t either.

Meanwhile, Eric Holder & ’em are sitting back in the cut, collecting notes on ol’ Georgie.

    • Daltex82

Zimmermann and O’Mara liars!!! Let me go place this in the “No Shit Sherlock” file.

      • Town

I don’t think O’Mara is lying, though. Why would he go on TV & say Zimmerman had a gun on him but it was concealed & no one was in any danger? That would really hurt GZ if it wasn’t true.

        Bottom line:

Zimmerman threatened his wife & her father with the gun, punched the father in the nose & destroyed the iPad b/c Shellie was recording his rage.

Zimmerman lied to the police when he said he didn’t have a gun.

The cops, having been called to the scene on a domestic violence call involving a gun, did not search Zimmerman for the gun.

Zimmerman’s lawyer gets there, talks to GZ, talks to Shellie & her dad, figures out that Shellie/Dad are telling the truth and goes into lawyer mode to protect his client. He promises to break Shellie/Dad off something as well as keep away if they will tell the police they didn’t actually SEE the gun (which they didn’t b/c GZ carries it CONCEALED).

Lawyer tells GZ to slow his roll & pay him for working these new sets of charges. GZ tells him to talk to the hand b/c he’s gon’ do whatever he wants. Lawyer gets pissed & quits on GZ & spills the tea that he hasn’t gotten paid…..

…..which now gets everyone questioning what happened to the money GZ got from the website.

        • TyrenM

Feeling that. Why open yourself to discipline from Florida Bar Association over a punk.

Missouri bill would void federal gun laws, OK machine guns for residents
By Leslie Bentz and George Howell, CNN

Kearney, Missouri (CNN) — The Missouri state legislature is trying to accomplish something that’s never been done: pass a law that’ll not only let residents own a machine gun, but also arrest federal agents if they try to take it away.

What’s more, the bill would make it illegal for anyone to publish any information about a gun owner.

“There are people saying this is the same as seceding from the Union,” said gun owner Kevin Jamison. “Missouri did not secede from the Union in 1862, and it does not do so by passing this law.”

The legislation already passed once through the Republican-led House and Senate — only to be vetoed by Democratic Gov. Jay Nixon.

These days, corporations that don’t have black directors on their boards are operating in the Stone Age of business. Shifting demographics and the burgeoning black consumer and business markets mean corporations cannot afford to be governed without the presence of African Americans in their boardrooms. “There are a lot of gifted, diverse directors who have been shut out over the years,” asserts John W. Rogers, Jr., chairman and CEO of Ariel Investments L.L.C. (No. 7 on the BE ASSET MANAGERS list with $4.9 billion in assets under management), who joined forces with Hobson and Charles Tribbett III, a senior partner with executive search firm Russell Reynolds Associates, 11 years ago to create the Black Corporate Directors Conference. “If you have diverse perspectives and diverse points of view, you’re going to get better decisions made. If you have better decision making, it will ultimately increase the value of the common stock.”

We created our exclusive BLACK ENTERPRISE Registry
of Corporate Directors to place a spotlight on those making
contributions as some of the nation’s most powerful guardians of shareholder value. Our roster represents 177 board members from a universe of the 250 largest companies on the S&P 500 based on market capitalization as of June 14.
Spending several months reviewing proxy statements and annual reports as well as contacting investor relations departments, corporate governance experts, and professional organizations such as the Black Corporate Directors Conference and Executive Leadership Council, a network of the nation’s most powerful African American execs, our editorial research team found that roughly 30% of the S&P 250 do not have a single black board member.

Fraud Stealing $100 Million Shows Flaws in U.S. Crop Insurance
    By David J. Lynch – Sep 11, 2013 12:01 AM ET

Harry Dean Canady will learn next month whether he’ll spend the rest of his life in prison for cheating taxpayers of more than $1 million and threatening to kill the U.S. agents who brought him to justice.

A convicted felon with an alcohol-fueled temper, Canady, 64, pleaded guilty in December to defrauding the federal crop insurance system and is behind bars pending sentencing.

His thieving was just a sliver of the largest fraud in the program’s 75-year history, a case that so far has ensnared 41 North Carolina tobacco farmers, insurance agents and claims adjusters whose law breaking cost taxpayers close to $100 million, federal prosecutors say.

“The system has checks and balances in place,” says Banu Rangarajan, 45, the assistant U.S. attorney who led the prosecution. “The problem is all the checks and balances here were involved in the fraud. The adjusters were paid off. The agents were paid off. Everybody was paid off.”

People need to read this entire post from Smartypants:

What the facts tell us about President Obama’s approach to foreign policy

Amidst all the reactions to current events that attempt to play things for partisan spin, or confirm an existing false narrative, or generate link bait, I thought it would be helpful to simply lay out a couple of facts and build our analysis on them.

On Syria, lets remember that for almost 2 years now President Obama has been fighting off the hawks – even in his own administration (yes, that includes Hillary Clinton) – to avoid getting involved because, as the President said last night: “we cannot resolve someone else’s civil war through force.” That one piece of information alone should make the idiots claiming he’s a warmonger STFU.

Now we learn that the proposed diplomatic solution that some people suggest simply dropped out of the sky a few days ago is something the Obama administration has been proposing to the Russians for almost a year now (even before the Assad regime used chemical weapons on August 21st). For those who insist on trying to be mind readers to get at the President’s realmotives rather than just take him at his word – this indicates that his main concern has always been about Assad’s chemical weapons.

Any analysis that leaves out either one of those facts is most likely based on mythology or projection. Its as simple as that.

George Zimmerman Scammed Gun Nuts Out Of A Lot Of Money; Never Paid Attorneys

[….] During the ABC interview, when O’Mara was asked if he had any advice for his former client, he said this: “Pay me.”[….] Zimmerman’s web page says that as of January 2, 2013, the “George Zimmerman Defense Fund” had raised a total of $314,099.07.[….] Under the heading “Case Related Expenses” it clearly says “Mr. O’Mara and Mr. West have not been paid for their services. Money has been used to pay rent on office space, for IT support, for staff dedicated to the case.”

Here’s a question: Did Zimmerman’s lawyer drop him because he’s a bad client with a bad history that just keeps getting worse, or did he drop him because he’s collected hundreds of thousands of dollars for his “legal defense” and not bothered to pay him a dime? Oh, and another question comes to mind. Does Zimmerman need all that private security to protect him from death threats associated with the case or to protect him from all of the right-wing gun nuts who are
likely to come looking for him when they figure out they’ve been had?

Found this in the comments at another blog. I agree completely with this statement.

The GOP won’t realize that POTUS has flipped the script on them until it’s all said and done.

I’m so glad you have calmed down about Obama on Syria. He is on the verge of accomplishing, without firing a shot, what Bush launched an invasion to do. Congress is going to get him out of bombing Syria, and yet Obama is going to be able to point to the Republicans and call them the ones who blinked as a dictator massacred his people. He is re-establishing the precedent that going to war requires congressional approval. He will have enhanced internationalism.

Republicans are loving this right now because they think Obama looks incompetent. They are blindly stumbling into an outcome that gives Obama everything he has ever said he wants, ever. And they’re not going to realize it until it’s too late. It’s such a perfect outcome, how could this have not been planned? Is Obama on the verge of pulling off the greatest rope-a-dope in the history of US politics?

Another letter to the editor about Syria:

I don’t think Obama gives two shits how he gets there; he’s just concerned with the final destination. Does anyone remember all the ups and downs and sausage-making over the ACA? Nope. They just know it’s Obamacare.

The way I see it, we have a president confident enough and secure enough in his authority to let others take the credit, to let the Russians lead. Because in the end, who cares how we get there? What matters is that the weapons are gone.

But of course the Washington class will frame this as a huge loss for the president, because. Can you imagine George W. Bush or Dick Cheney taking this route? Not a chance. They would’ve bombed the shit out of Syria just to show they could.

The current solution doesn’t have the drama of dropping bombs or sending sorties over Damascus, so Obama comes off as a bit of a dull president. And in this case, that’s fantastic, because he’s getting shit done. He always does.

    The Child Exchange
Inside America’s Underground Market for ADOPTED CHILDREN

Orphaned in Russia, brought to America, and then abandoned time and again

A mother decides she adopted ‘a pig in a poke’ and sends her daughter away. Inga: ‘My parents didn’t want me. Russia didn’t want me. I didn’t want to live.’
EDITOR’S NOTE: This story contains language that some readers may find offensive.

BATTLE CREEK, Michigan – Inga spent most of her childhood in a Russian orphanage, longing for parents who would protect her.

Her biological mother, a prostitute, had abandoned her when she was a baby. She never knew her father.

At the age of 12, her life was about to change. It was 1997, and an American couple was adopting her.

“My picture was, I’m gonna have family, I’m gonna go to school, I’m gonna have friends,” Inga says today.

Less than a year after bringing Inga home, her new parents, Priscilla and Neal Whatcott, gave up trying to raise her. They say the adoption agency never told them that Inga struggled to read or write, that she suffered from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, that she smoked.
The Whatcotts say they tried therapy and support groups. They even reached out to a Russian judge to undo the adoption.

When nothing worked, they turned to what Priscilla now calls “the underground network.” In an early example of adoptive parents using the Internet to seek a new home for an unwanted child, Inga was orphaned repeatedly.

In the next six months, the Whatcotts sent her to three different families. None wanted to keep her. In one home, Inga says she had sex with a sibling who then urinated on her. In another, she says the father molested her.

Sent to a Michigan psychiatric facility at the age of 13, Inga says she had sex again – this time with her therapist. Michael Patterson, the therapist, was acquitted of first degree criminal sexual conduct and remains a licensed social worker in Michigan. He says he “did not cross the line” physically with Inga and remembers her as “a very troubled child.”

On Patterson’s last point, no one disagrees. When Michigan institutionalized her, officials characterized Inga’s troubles this way: “substance abuse, domestic violence, separation from parents, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, verbal abuse, attachment issue and mental health issues.”

Why aren’t all these adoptive “parents” in prison? Since when isn’t this simply child TRAFFICKING?

      • conlakappa

When they are foreign children so the law isn’t ahead of the nasty people? International adoption is multi-layered and can be super messy. The State Department needs to step in and have stronger guidelines in place.

Terminally Ill Woman Pays for 16 Struggling Families’ School Clothes at Kmart

Some struggling families in Central Maine got a sweet surprise last week. They all received a phone call from the Auburn Kmart’s layaway department informing that an anonymous stranger had just paid off their bill. “Everybody wants to go back to school with new clothes,” said Store Manager Joyce Beane. “Now 16 more families (who had fallen behind on their payments) can do that.”

One of the women whose bill was paid actually had bought items
for a holiday drive benefitting needy families, so the ripples
of kindness were going to spread outward even further.[….]

Shell fined $1.1 million for polluting Arctic air during error-plagued drilling efforts

[….] In today’s settlements, Shell has agreed to pay a $710,000 penalty for violations of the Discoverer air permit and a $390,000 penalty for violations of the Kulluk air permit. The $1.1 million in penalties is, of course, chump change for an oil giant that has already spent more than $4.5 billion on its Three Stooges-like efforts to plunder the Arctic. But it’s nice to know that the federal government is at least keeping one eye on Shell’s Arctic operations.

Sallie Mae Becomes 50th Corporation To Dump ALEC

After months of protests by student groups, SLM Corporation (the student loan company commonly known as Sallie Mae) acknowledged Saturday that it has dropped its membership in the conservative, corporate-backed American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC).

According to the Center for Media and Democracy, Sallie Mae is
the 50th corporation to abandon ALEC since the group has become toxic for its controversial model legislation.[….]

Kenneth Thompson wins Democratic nomination for Brooklyn district attorney– – – –
    – – – — – –Kenneth Thompson, a lawyer best known for representing the maid in the sex assault scandal involving former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn, won the Democratic nomination for Brooklyn district attorney Tuesday, unseating longtime prosecutor Charles Hynes.

With 98 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, Thompson was leading with 55 percent of the vote.

Hynes has the support of the GOP but says he won’t run as a Republican. There are no other major party candidates in the
    general election.

Thompson, 48, is a former federal prosecutor who tried the brutal police attack on Abner Louima in 1999. Since going into private practice, he has represented victims of a 2007 steam pipe explosion in midtown Manhattan and Sherr-Una Booker, the woman at the center of a domestic violence scandal that caused serious political damage to then-Gov. David Paterson, who eventually dropped plans to run for a full term.

But Thompson became known around the world as the lawyer representing Nafissatou Diallo, the maid who accused Strauss-Kahn
of sexually assaulting her in a Manhattan hotel room in May 2011.

The Best Cab Ride of My Life

The story is short. But the picture is worth – well – everything. I
was in a cab heading home from O’hare airport – a journey I make with regularity. The cab driver was polite. His car was clean. And I was settling in for my 25 minute ride home. It was then that I noticed it. The sign. There were actually two of them. Identical. Laminated. And posted perfectly on the back side of the driver’s seat and front passenger’s seat:[….]

I think I read it three or four times. The cynic in me was looking for something missing. There had to have been a catch. But there wasn’t. I snapped a photograph and posted it on my Facebook profile with a note, “Nominating my cab driver for today’s ‘act of kindness’ award.”[…]

Imo, this is a very good start, but there are aslo areas that should be tweaked, starting with not confining youth to solitary confinement, independent audits being conducted outside the purview of ACA, and mandating compliance for all prison facilities across-the-board.

Ten Years After Law’s Passage, DOJ Takes Baby Steps To Address Prison Sexual Assault

[….] The new policies will impose basic requirements, such as separating teens in adult prisons, and banning cross-gender pat-downs in juvenile and female units. Facilities must also develop plans to eliminate rape, and will be subject to federal audits, U.S. News reports. Just as the PREA turns ten years old, the first audit was conducted last week at a federal prison in West Virginia, and more are scheduled for the coming weeks. But some are alarmed to learn who will perform the first round of audits.[….]

The new requirements are mandatory for federal prisons, and state
prisons who receive federal funding will lose five percent if they don’t comply. Because coming into compliance will also bear significant cost to some facilities, some may opt to forgo the five percent rather than comply.[….]

    PBOMB♥ —UPDATE: – – -NYC 2013 Election Results –A LOOK at the CANDIDATE: —:>)

—-This is Why Bill de Blasio is Winning the NYC Mayor’s Race

—- – – –Addressing a cheering crowd outside The Bell House in Brooklyn late Tuesday evening, Bill de Blasio credited his strong showing in the day’s Democratic mayoral primary election to his energetic grass roots supporters. “That’s how we change this city,” he told supporters before aides shepherded him inside for his election night victory party…

The supporters at de Blasio’s “block party” on Tuesday
night reflected the diversity of the candidate’s support across the
city and the resonance of his message countering inequality.

“I like what he has to say; he didn’t pull any punches,” said Dana Beauford, a city worker from the Bronx. “We need somebody like Bill de Blasio.” She appreciated de Blasio’s opposition to stop-and-frisk and his support for keeping community hospitals open.

You go to McDonald’s and order a cheeseburger. They give you a McWrap instead. What do you do?

You can follow the Obama way or you can follow the Chris Matthews way.

The Obama way is you go to the counter, say hey, I ordered a cheeseburger but I got a McWrap instead. Can I have a cheeseburger? Calvin gives Obama a cheeseburger & tells him to keep the McWrap. Obama gets his cheeseburger and goes away.

The Chris Matthews way is to scream & shout how they gave him a MCWRAP instead of a CHEESEBURGER. The Chris Matthews way is to DEMAND to know who in the back put a McWrap in his bag instead of a cheeseburger and to pound on the counter and yell.

Then the manager comes running to offer Chris a free cheeseburger and Chris shouts NO! He DEMANDS the person who gave him a McWrap be FIRED and he wants an APOLOGY for giving him a McWrap instead of a cheeseburger. So the manager profusely apologizes, gives Chris a cheeseburger and Chris marches out the door screaming that he will NEVER EVER come to McDonalds EVER AGAIN (until he comes back the next day).

The Chris Matthews of the world want Obama to scream, shout, pound the counter, flip the straws & napkins up, toss the ketchup packets and act a fool to get the cheeseburger. The Obamas of the world know all you have to do is point out the mistake and ask for the cheeseburger in order to get the cheeseburger.

You can follow the Obama way or you can follow the Rachel Maddow way.

The Obama way is you go to the counter, say hey, I ordered a cheeseburger but I got a McWrap instead. Can I have a cheeseburger? Calvin gives Obama a cheeseburger & tells him to keep the McWrap. Obama gets his cheeseburger and goes away.

The Rachel Maddow way is to repeatedly question the cashier about why she was given a McWrap instead of a cheeseburger, to say that Burger King doesn’t give you a McWrap instead of a cheeseburger, in fact Burger King’s slogan is HAVE IT YOUR WAY. She will then proceed to tell the McDonald’s manager how the restaurant should be run and jump behind the counter to demonstrate how the McDonald’s would be run if she were running it.

Obama asks for the cheeseburger and goes away. Rachel Maddow will make you listen to how she would have done it before she gets the cheeseburger.

    • qosine

      Keep ’em coming, Town!

  • Town

You can follow the Obama way or you can follow the Chris Hayes way.

The Obama way is you go to the counter, say hey, I ordered a cheeseburger but I got a McWrap instead. Can I have a cheeseburger? Calvin gives Obama a cheeseburger & tells him to keep the McWrap. Obama gets his cheeseburger and goes away.

The Chris Hayes way is to bring over a representative from Arby’s to tell the McDonald’s people that not only is their service bad, but they don’t serve grass fed beef to the public like Arby’s does. That giving people McWraps instead of what they ordered is tremendous food waste and should be stopped at all costs. Chris Hayes & the Arbys worker will stand at the counter snarking on the deficiencies of McDonalds until someone points out that both Arbys & McDonalds are fast food places. Then Chris will ask for his cheeseburger and eat it, all the while complaining that the wrapper is not made out of recycled materials.

Obama asks for the cheeseburger and goes away. Chris Hayes puts down the cheeseburger but eats it anyway.
